About 21 percent fall into the 13 to 24-year-old group, 53 percent in the 25 to 44-year-old age group, and about 24 percent fall into the 45 to 64year-old age group. The Thomas St. Health Center operates under an unusual partner-
ship. Physicians from both Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas Health Science Center work in concert creating an opportunity for learning. There are about 20 research projects underway at the clinic at any given moment. The situation attracts some of the finest doctors in the U.S. The physician who first identified the AIDS virus to the CDC is among the constellation working at Thomas St. In 1981,

The hip extensor muscles, hamstrings and glutes work together to generate a powerful stride and help avoid shin splints. “Core muscles are also important to build a strong, balanced structural system and avoid injuries,” adds Dr. Shani who will provide medical support during next month’s Chevron Houston Marathon.

For The Leader Navigating health insurance plans can be confusing. One health insurance product that’s relatively easy to understand is a health savings account, or HSA. This type of account can help account holders save money on the costs associated with their healthcare. What is an HSA? HSAs are like any other savings account, except they can be used for medical, vision and dental expenses. HSAs are tax-advantaged, meaning that income can be deposited into an HSA before it is taxed. HSAs can only be opened and used in conjunction with a high-deductible health insurance plan, or those with a deductible of at least $1,300 for an individual or $2,600 for a family.

A retirement saving vehicle In addition to the other benefits mentioned, HSAs can be used as a way to invest in retirement. The resource NerdWallet, which offers financial tools and objective advice to help people understand their options and make the best possible decisions, says an HSA is a good retirement savings option, especially for high-income earners who can’t make deductible contributions to a traditional IRA or any contributions to a Roth IRA. HSAs can help offset healthcare costs and even help with long-term financial planning.

HSA details and eligibility requirements Although HSAs have contribution limits, they’re advantageous in that the savings accumulated can be used to pay for noncovered, qualified medical expenses, such as copays, vision and dental care and even deductibles. HSAs may be established through an employer-sponsored insurance plan or through a bank or other financial institution. To qualify, a person must be under the age of 65 and have a high-deductible health insurance plan. What are the advantages and disadvantages of HSAs? There are advantages and disadvantages to HSAs. HSA account holders can control how their saved money is spent, and there’s no risk of losing the money at the end of the year because it rolls over. Taxes are not paid on money going into the HSA. In addition, employers can contribute to HSAs, and account holders do not lose their balances when they change jobs. Disadvantages include the challenge of setting aside money to put into the HSA, especially if finances are tight. One who has certain medical situations that are urgent may find that budgeting for an HSA is impractical.

From playing basketball to starting a running program to training for the Chevron Houston Marathon, athletes who run and jump are susceptible to shin splints. On December 1 each year, people who have been touched by HIV/ AIDS observe World AIDS Day. It is both a celebration of the enormous strides made battling the deadly virus, and a day of sadness remembering the two million American souls lost in the journey. Many people don’t worry about HIV/AIDS anymore but, according to the American Center for Disease Control, the virus remains active in the population. In 2015, 39,513 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. The CDC estimates that 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Remarkably, about one in eight of these are unaware that they are infected, making detection paramount. On the edge of the Houston Heights, Harris Health System’s Thomas St. Health Center continues to fight the disease. As the first free-standing clinic dedicated specifically to HIV/AIDS in the U.S., professionals working in the four-story, 100-year-old building are currently treating about 6,000 patients and have saved many more since opening in 1989. Once considered a gay male’s disease, who are Thomas St.’s patients today? They could be anyone – any age, race, sexual preference or background. While there have been advancements, the virus remains an “equal opportunity killer” if left untreated. “Today, HIV is still found more frequently in males, but these patients are not only gay men anymore,“ stated Pete Rodriguez, Director of HIV Services and Health Care for the Homeless for Harris Health Care. “Many of our patients self-identify

Plan resolution early; turn off the devices For The Leader Many people now spend ample time each day texting, posting to social media and watching videos on their smartphones. Devices such as phones and tablets might play big roles in many peoples’ lives, and few may realize just how much time they’re spending on their devices. According to Nielsen’s Total Audience Report, Americans aged 18 and older now spend more than 11 hours a day watching television, listening to the radio or using phones and other electronic devices. Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on assisting people in navigating the world of media and technology, notes that American teens and tweens spend about nine hours using media for enjoyment. Research conducted by Silentnight found that mobile phone usage, at eight hours and 41 minutes per day, has now exceeded the amount of time people spend sleeping. Sleep experts warn that constant exposure to electronic devices is contributing to poor sleep and can have other negative effects on a person’s health. Cutting back on electronic device usage can prove challenging. However, with some patience and practice, it is possible to wean off devices without digital withdrawal
symptoms. Keep tech devices out of the bedroom. Make bedrooms device-free zones so they don’t disturb sleep. Various studies have found the blue light emitted from phones and other electronics can wreak havoc with the body’s natural circadian rhythms, reducing melatonin production and causing the body to think it’s daylight. Turn off devices at least 60 to 90 minutes before bed to give the mind time to wind down. Reach for a book. When a diversion is needed, grab a book or other reading material. Keep magazines, traditional books instead of e-books and newspapers at the ready. Turn off notifications. Eliminate pop-ups and audible sounds. Check posts and emails on your own schedule. Delay turn-on times. Push back the time that you first turn on a phone or another electronic device by a couple of minutes per day. Leave phones home when running quick errands. Follow suit when shopping for groceries or heading to the gym for a workout. Set limits. Establish a schedule when devices can and cannot be used in the house, enforcing this schedule strictly. When not on devices, get outdoors or engage in physical activity.
Thomas Street from P. 1B Shortly after, the deadly virus was named GRID, or “GayRelated Immune Deficiency.” As it started to present outside the gay population, the disease was renamed “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome” or AIDS. In the 25 years following, millions of Americans would die of it. “Today, with good healthcare, a person with HIV can live a long, full life,” said Rodriguez. “In the mid 1990s, we introduced AZT as a treatment, then ‘the cocktail’ of medications. Now, patients can be treated, if diagnosed early, with one pill a day. Approximately

However, professionals strongly agree that the best way to save someone infected with HIV, is early detection and long-term care. “The first step to getting well, is getting tested,” Rodriguez concluded.

Thorn in the Flesh
Rev. Laura Mayo Covenant Baptist Church
There has been a lot of speculation about the “thorn in the flesh” that Paul said afflicted him and from which he prayed unsuccessfully to God to be delivered. I’ve seen theories as to what exactly this was ranging from epilepsy to a stutter. Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan in their book The First Paul speculate–and they’re clear that this is conjecture–that Paul may have been afflicted by bouts of malaria. In the second century, the theologian Tertullian wrote that he believed Paul suffered from severe earaches or headaches. John Calvin described it as “fleshly temptation.” Martin Luther considered it “spiritual temptation.” John Knox decided it was “infirmities of the mind.” J.W. McGarvey thought it might be an inflammation of the eye. Some have suggested that Paul had a bad problem with stuttering or a stammering speech. And still others suggest that he had irritable bowel syndrome. Whatever it was, it did not keep Paul from getting around. There was hardly a whistle-stop in the Mediterranean world that he didn’t visit. He planted churches the way Johnny Appleseed planted trees. And whenever he had ten minutes to spare, he wrote a letter. He bullied. He coaxed. He comforted. He cursed. He bared his soul. He reminisced. He complained. He theologized. He inspired. He exulted. Punch-drunk and Christ-drunk, he tried to keep in touch with everybody. Paul’s mail is still being circulated. I’ve been hearing a lot of Paul lately on my facebook feed, on twitter, on the news. Not Paul talking about the body of Christ working together or how we are all equal – I don’t think I have seen one reference to “in Christ there is no Jew nor Greek, circumcised or uncircumcised, no slave nor free, no male and female.” No, I’ve been hearing the words of Paul right next to shouts of Sodom and Gomorrah and references to one man and one woman in Genesis.
All this quoting of Paul and a few other texts from the Bible to propagate hate and exclusion has become a thorn in my flesh. And the thorn is festering. Apparently, I am not alone. I have heard from many of you in the past few days and weeks with stories of being unfriended, of finding yourself embroiled in one debate or another, of struggling with when to engage and how to engage those with whom we disagree. I have heard from many of you with questions about what to say when someone starts using the Bible to condemn LGBT people. I imagine we are all on the same page here – that we believe God’s image is reflected in lesbian, gay, bisexual, or trans and even straight people - that all of us exactly as we are are beloved children of God. Perhaps because we agree, we rarely talk about the biblical texts people use to condemn, exclude, and hate. There is much more information than time so if you want to know more, just let me know. Or, you could look up “Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth,” which is available on the Alliance of Baptists website. Our own Millard Eiland participated, by the way, in creating the first edition of that text. Let’s start with Sodom and Gomorrah. If you actually read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, and then read references to the story in other parts of the Bible, it quickly becomes apparent that the story is not really about same-gender sex. Same-gender sex does not cause of the destruction of the cities. Various kinds of sex are part of the story but it is exploitation, a lack of hospitality, and mistreatment of the poor that cause the destruction of the cities. Ezekiel says “This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy” (16:49-50). Amos warns that Israel will be overthrown just like Sodom and Gomorrah because the “poor are oppressed and the needy are crushed (4:1). And in Isaiah: the people of Jerusalem
and Judah “proclaim their sin like Sodom” And what is the charge? “Your hands are full of blood”; “the spoil of the poor is in your house”; and for “grinding the face of the poor” (Isaiah 3). Even Zephaniah uses this story as he notes that Moab will be like “Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah for “these have filled houses with violence and fraud.” Jesus mentions Sodom and Gomorrah, but he is concerned about judgment upon cities that do not offer hospitality to those traveling the countryside preaching and teaching. (Matthew 10:14-15). The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is a lack of hospitality. It is violence to outsiders and the poor. It is an abuse of power. There is sex in the story but sex – regardless of the genders of those having it – is neither the cause for the destruction of the cities nor the manifestation of those cities’ evil. Now, how about Leviticus? Both chapters 18 and 20 forbid a man to lie with another man “as with a woman.” This activity is called an abomination and is listed with other abominations – the word abomination is always used to indicate a serious breach in ritual purity law. These passages list other abominations: eating pork, misusing incense, intercourse during menstruation, wearing garments made of two different materials (if you are wearing polyester – you are an abomination), sowing a field with two kinds of seed, cutting one’s hair where it meets the temple of the human face, and the list goes on – a list full of things, like eating shrimp and beating one’s slaves, that we have long forgotten, ignored, or decided did not apply to us or others. So now we are down to three passages, all of which are in the Second Testament and all of them are in letters Paul either wrote or are attributed to him. In two of the passages Sodomites are mentioned in lists of “wrongdoers” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) and the “lawless and disobedient” (1 Timothy 1:9-10). In both of
these listings, however, there is considerable evidence that the language used indicates a condemnation of pederasty – the sexual and/or economic exploitation of children, particularly young boys – rather than against consenting sex between two adults. In the same way, Paul’s description of women who “exchanged natural relations for unnatural” and of “men committing shameless acts with men” (Romans 1:26-27) is set within a larger context of idolatry. Pagan temple cult prostitution, using adult men and women as well as young boys, was common in that day. In context, Paul is condemning exploitation--condemning the sexualized use of young boys by well-to-do men, condemning the use of less fortunate men and women as temple prostitutes. Even if you discount these contextual factors, even if you want to choose to lift a single verse here or there out of its context, there’s still a major issue of consistency in our notions of biblical authority. What about all those other prohibitions? For example, there are 49 verses in the Bible against gluttony. Where’s the outcry and condemnation? Why not exclude gluttons from our congregations? The simple language of Scripture prohibits women wearing gold jewelry, braiding their hair, and wearing expensive clothing (1 Peter 3:3). And not only are women to be silent in church (1 Corinthians 14:34), they are also to have their heads and faces covered (11:5–6). So, if it weren’t already true, I am headed straight to hell: given the gluttony, the jewelry, and my uncovered head and face, it was decided before I even opened my mouth. The only people Jesus explicitly notes are headed for judgment are those who did not provide food for the hungry or drink for the thirsty, those who did not welcome strangers or provide clothing to the naked, those who did not visit prisoners. In fact, there are more than 2,000 verses in the Bible mandating our care for the poor. Where is the public outcry over this sin?
Scripture 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 Jesus, who according to John 13, reclines at the table with “John, the disciple whom he loves laying on his breast” doesn’t have anything to say about sex, same-sex sex or any other kind. The only words of Jesus about marriage as recorded in the Gospels are a condemnation of divorce going so far as to state that those who are divorced are committing adultery if they remarry. No one gives that much heed. But, somehow many people still want to hide behind the tired phrase “I support Biblical marriage.” Which Biblical marriage do they support? Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar? Jacob, Leah, and Rachel? Solomon with his 700 wives and 300 concubines? The ones where women are given, taken, sold, and bartered into marriage? Paul encouraging celibacy? Or the unconditional love and devotion that marks the relationship of Ruth and Naomi? When it comes to dealing with texts typically used against LGBT inclusion, we need to be honest with the Bible. This includes looking both at the presumptions that modern-day readers bring to their interpretation and the larger context and trajectory of the biblical narrative. The same hermeneutic that we use to understand all those passage in the Bible about slavery, about the equality of women, and a thousand other things -- that’s the hermeneutic we must apply to same-sex relationships. The Bible has been used as a tool of hate for too long. A tool of hate against Jews, against people of color, against women, against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans people . . . and it’s time it stopped.
It is not simply a matter of fights over facebook or twitter – it is parents who have disowned their sons and daughters, it is churches who have called their very own an abomination. How do we respond? When the early church was in turmoil over what to do about Gentile converts – Do they need to be circumcised, what about food rules, can we even share table fellowship with them? I mean, read the Bible, there are rules to be followed . . . Peter stood up and said, in effect: “I know what the Bible says about circumcision and food laws. What I’m telling you is that I’ve seen indisputable evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Gentiles. God has made no distinction between them and us.” It’s an ancient and deeply biblical idea. Paul says it this way: “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love” (Galatians 5:6). Love. I’ve not been feeling much love toward those touting hate using God and the Bible. I’m angry at people for speaking for God. But if I’m not careful, I quickly become guilty of doing exactly that. I start speaking for God or the Bible as though I know. So rather than trying to speak for God I am going to try to live love. This living doesn’t mean I am necessarily going to keep my mouth shut but it does mean I am going to try to think and pray before I speak, before I type. It does mean, that no matter how sharp the thorn in my flesh is, I am going to try to speak and act from a place of love. Amen.

Young Leaders Program Photo courtesy of Incarnate Word Academy Members of Incarnate Word Academy’s Young Leaders Program take their lessons out into the real world last week. Incarnate Word Academy’s partnership with the Wharton School of Business led to a huge pay-day for the San Francisco Nativity Academy in Southwest Houston, thanks in part to the participation of and leadership abilities displayed by Heights area students (L to R) Jacque Bergeron, Kaylee Kieschnick, Anna Canizales and Chelsea Hogue.
Customer satisfaction has been my greatest reward for over 25 years.

High-speed rail gets a new leader For The Leader The high-speed rail project that would connect Houston to Dallas, and possibly impact this area, has a new leader. Carlos Aguilar has been named CEO of Texas Central Partners. Through numerous public meetings, Texas Central considered many route alternatives, including some that would have cut through the heart of the area. Instead, the latest plans call for the rail to travel parallel to the Hempstead Highway and end somewhere near Post Oak at the intersections of 610 and I-10 West. The announcement of Aguilar highlights the progress of Texas Central’s project from the development stage to the planning, engineering and construction phase. Over the last two years, Texas Central has been proceeding with the necessary environmental, design, engineering, field studies and related work as part of the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement as well as discussions with those FRA components responsible for safety and technology issues. Texas Central is the private Texas-based company
developing the nation’s first high-speed passenger train connecting North Texas and Houston, with a midway stop in the Brazos Valley. The company’s market-led approach is backed by private investors, not government grants, a new business model for infrastructure projects. Aguilar, formerly a senior vice president at CH2M Hill, a global engineering company, has an extensive background in industrial and infrastructure work, and his appointment – effective Dec. 12 – reflects the Texas project’s focus on the next phase of construction and operations. “Carlos brings a significant mix of construction management and engineering experience, making him an ideal fit for our team as we move forward on this transformational project,” said Richard Lawless, chairman of the Texas Central board. “He has proven a leadership record in the management of large-scale infrastructure projects and has excelled in the energy, transportation and rail industries. We look forward to his many contributions as we continue to set the pace on providing a new and much-needed transportation alternative.” Aguilar, 58, said he is eager to build on the success of the
company’s current efforts. “The Texas Central project is a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop the country’s first true high-speed train and I look forward to leveraging the great team in place and excited to be a part of it. This is a project that not only will address the state’s growing transportation demands but also will provide an economic catalyst and jobs in local communities for generations to come.” Aguilar, while at CH2M, served on its Management Committee and was Chair-
man of the CCPP Project Consortium for the Ichthys LNG Facility. Before that, he was President of BrightSource Construction Management and Senior Vice President at BrightSource Energy, developer of large-scale solar thermal power plants. He led the development, engineering, procurement and construction of the company’s portfolio of projects, including the development and construction of Ivanpah Solar Electricity Generating System, the largest solar thermal plant in the world.
