Face of North Shepherd continues to change By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Even a casual observer would notice the transformation of North Shepherd Drive that has happened over the past five years. Car lots, repair shops and an assortment of smaller mom-and-pop businesses are making way for big developments with big-name tenants. The turnover hit overdrive with the opening of the Heights H-E-B at 2300 N. Shepherd Dr. at the end of January. Now there are a slew of for-sale signs all along the corridor as well as for-lease signs in the parking lots of properties that already have been purchased. And with the change, there are businesses that are either closing up shop or moving elsewhere. One of those business owners is Leo Segev, who owns Mainland Investment Auto Sales but not the property where it stands. The land was owned by Ed Clark, who sold the .9-acre site at 2200 N. Shepherd Dr. last June to the Katz family of Katz’s Deli and Bar in Houston. The family may make it the third location of their eatery, although no plans have been announced. “I was incredibly impressed with the retail opportunity, Barry Katz said

in a news release at the time. “The size and location of the property on North Shepherd Drive, and being neighbors with H-E-B, made me realize that this was the perfect opportunity to buy property inside (Loop 610) for either retail or restaurant purposes. I am now proud to call Ed Clark a new friend and grateful the Clark family chose to sell the Katz family this property. Segev, who had been on North Shepherd since 2014, said he had aspirations of buying the property for a time but also said the sale price almost tripled and he could not afford it. The sale price was not disclosed in the release, but the Harris County Appraisal District values the property at $1.76 million. Segev said the area started its dramatic change when the alcohol dry laws changed in the Heights and brought in a spate of new businesses. Mainland is now moving to Airline Drive, and Segev thinks there are advantages to the new location, too. “I’m going where the clientele is, Segev said. “The Hispanic community is not here. And he’s taking the two 14-foot fiberglass statues created by the Art Guys with him. The statues of men in suits that used to dominate the lot have already started

their new life on Airline. “I’d never heard of the Art Guys, but people kept stopping to take pictures and sometimes they would look at cars. In this business, any attention is good attention, so I got them repaired and repainted, Segev told Houstonia Magazine in May. Another business owner

who is prepared to close up shop is Raul Osornio, who has run Potros Resale Shop at 2124 N. Shepherd Dr. for 16 years. He said that he does not have a definite closing date but is waiting to hear from his landlord once the deal to sell the land is finalized. Osornio also thought of

making a bid for the property, but the owner has two contiguous lots and wanted to sell them as a package.

Becca Cakes signs at Stomping Grounds

Dessert artist Rebecca Pham said that although she has been in business for two years, Becca Cakes will be her first storefront. She will move into an 861-square foot space in Building D at Stomping Grounds, 1225 W 34th St., next to Threadfare. Pham said she hopes to be open by late spring. Out of a shared commercial space, Pham has been making custom cakes for weddings. She’ll do that from the new storefront, too, but will also add a retail bakery with cupcakes, cookies, macaroons and more. “We’ll have ready-to-go cakes and cake toppers for parties and events, Pham said. A psychology major with a sweet tooth, Pham had an office job while she started to take baking more seriously. Eventually she took a leap of faith and quit her day job. In looking for a storefront space, Pham, who lives in the Galleria area, concentrated her search on the Heights and Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area. “I felt like there weren’t a lot

Bobby was born in Boulder, Colorado, and came to Texas in high school. They met at yoga teacher training, got married, quit their day jobs and are pursuing their passion. “We both have spent many years practicing yoga in the yoga community and truly believe in the benefits it can bring to modern society, Annavy said. “We believe through the act of kindness, meditation,

“I’m a little sad, Osornio said. “I’m no longer going to auction. The local resident would like to move somewhere close by, but the rising rents – which Osornio said have tripled – are problematic. Mark Zastrow, who lives in Garden Oaks and owns Heights Autohaus at 1407 N Shepherd Dr., said he’s not going anywhere. “If the owner sells it, I’m buying, Zastrow said, adding his lease agreement gives him first rights for purchase. Zastrow said he has been at the location since 2007 and his business, which services European cars, has been booming ever since. What’s also booming is the construction around him, including an eight-story structure across the street. Zastrow is learning to live with it. “It blocks the sun, he said. For an idea of the current asking prices of properties along the corridor, LoopNet provides two recent listings. At the corner of Shepherd and 21st Street, .3 acres of commercial land is being offered for $1.25 million, and .46 acres at 1329 N. Shepherd Dr. is going for $2.3 million.

Local business owner combines cleaning with community service By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com

During his travels through 40 different countries in various parts of the world, Northwest Houston resident and former U.S. Army officer Trey Davila was surrounded by entrepreneurs who inspired him to pursue his own business. “Although I lived in Beijing, China, before moving back home,” Davila said, “I knew I wanted to start my own venture back in the Houston area where I was born and raised.” After meeting the people from the Two Maids & A Mop

franchise and seeing their business model, Davila said he knew he’d found the right fit. Now, he’s launched a location in Houston. Two Maids & A Mop is a national residential cleaning company with a “Pay for Performance” model, which gives the client the opportunity to review the job on a scale from 1-10. The client’s rating alone will directly determine the compensation level for the two maids that were assigned to the home. “My leadership experience in the military along with my previous professional experi-

ence working for a Fortune 500 company has provided the tools and foundation necessary to operate a customeroriented business,” Davila said. Along with providing a cleaning service to community members, including in the Heights area, Davila also works with nonprofits and other organizations that allow the

business to give back to the community on a larger scale. One of the organizations that Davila and his team have established a relationship with is Cleaning For A Reason. They work together to provide free home cleaning for cancer patients in the community. “Our team here in Houston takes great pride in the initiative, and we hold it close to

our hearts. A number of our team members or their loved ones have been affected by cancer in some way,” Davila said. “We are able to help local cancer patients in our own community by taking care of their homes. We’ve seen that it truly has a positive impact on their peace of mind, especially as they juggle daily life, health concerns and other matters.” Davila is also in contact with The Alliance in Houston, which in an organization that helps refuges, immigrants and

She’s preparing to open a second location at 33 1/3 @ Thirtyfourth, the development at West 34th Street and Ella Boulevard, in mid-January.

Choi said she wanted something with high ceilings to accommodate a second floor, which is currently under construction. “We’re not just a coffee shop. We are also educators,” Choi said. “We have classes and competitions and also train baristas.” The first floor of Luce will be the training center with the roastery on the second floor. Art Valet: Music-making Stoll couple returning to Heights for performance Mitch Cohen Art Columnist

This time of year brings many emotions, traditions and reunions to mind. At First Saturday Arts Market, the 15-year-old outdoor art market on 19th Street, there are traditions. For John and Rebecca Stoll, December is their time to come home to the Heights to be with their family, and they count friends made at the market among them. They have performed there for nine years. The Stolls are musicians and call themselves Grifters & Shills professionally. The Heights is where they got their start performing together, and returning each December to perform has become their tradition. Now living and working in the Clear Lake area, the Heights is where their love of music and each other came together. I remember hearing them at a performance 10 years ago and loved their sound. They were different from other musicians and they still do things their own way. What’s your tie to the Heights? “I grew up in Garden Oaks and stayed there until my mid20s,” Rebecca said. “I spent many a weekend shopping on 19th Street, and much of my childhood plotting my move

into the Truxillo mansion. After John and I started playing together, we moved into a little place in Oak Forest, with a studio apartment in the backyard. I’d say we really learned how to be a band in that little backyard studio.” Added John: “Our biggest tie to the Heights is the community of friends - frankly, we call them family - that we have met because of the First Saturday Arts Market. ... One of the artists even officiated our wedding ceremony, and he lives in the Heights now.” Their sound is certainly unique. They describe it as “high-lonesome harmonies with a rock and roll soul.” It speaks to a lot of the influences that each brings to the table, and those influences are definitely different. Rebecca’s music background was initially choral and classical singing, but says she

ruined that voice with blues and rock and roll. Surrounded by talented family musicians, Rebecca developed an East Texas singing voice. “John and I have very complementary vocal timbres, which lends itself to some fun harmonizations,” Rebecca said. “The harmonies are my favorite part of what we do. But there’s definitely a rock element to our music as well. John grew up on heavy metal, and the intensity of that definitely influences our performances and recordings.” The name Grifters & Shills is based on the 19th-century traveling medicine shows -specifically the two-man con. A swindler seeks to sell a cure-all snake oil liniment to a crowd (your grifter). A wellplaced, seemingly random volunteer offers to try it in front of everyone to demonstrate its effectiveness (your shill). They

take it down the road, town after town, making money off of magic smoke, like songs pulled from the air. The Stolls’ recording locations and instruments always seem to be a little different than other musicians. “We have definitely walked our own path with respect to recording our albums, and I imagine we always will,” John said. “Our early recordings were tracked in a few places we lived in prior to moving near the Heights, but they were all finished at our place in Oak Forest. “The latest three albums were recorded in the little front room of our 1960s-era house in Clear Lake, and each was an experiment in honing our voice and finding the limits of the few tools we have,” John continued. “Our recording setup is very humble, but we have a very firm DIY ethic to how we do this thing. That means hundreds and hundreds of hours of work to make these recordings, so when you spin our disc, know that the music you hear is born on true blood, sweat, and tears.”

Spice up your life with visit to Aladdin By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com

At the end of last year, Aladdin Mediterranean Grill was voted best new restaurant in the area by The Leader’s readers. Having visited a few times, I understand why. The cafeteria-style restaurant is filled with the aroma of freshly baked pita bread and different kinds of spices. Pita bread from a basket is the first thing to grab at the beginning of the line. Then, depending on what kind of plate you’re getting, you choose your cold sides first, then your warm sides. On my most recent visit, I was recommended the caramelized onion hummus to go along with the pita bread. Other sides I chose were the tabbouli salad and saffron rice to go along with the chicken kabob, which wasn’t cooked until I ordered it. The portion sizes on my plate were huge, and just by looking at the plate I could tell

I was going to have leftovers. Since the kabob had to be cooked, I sat at my table with my sides to wait. It only took a few minutes for the chicken to come out. I dipped the still-warm pita bread in the hummus and was met with light onion flavors. I never would have picked this hummus flavor on my own, but it quickly became one of the best I’ve tried. The saffron rice had a subtle flavor and aroma that was almost floral or maybe honeylike. Chopped parsley, tomatoes, mint, onion and olive oil made up the tabbouli salad. This was a new dish for me, and I was glad to have tried it. With the ingredients all chopped and mixed together, it was easy to eat. One of my favorite parts of the salad was the sweetness added by the tomatoes. The chicken kabob, which doesn’t actually come out on a kabob but is only cooked that way, had an orange color that came from seasoning, which

was light. The pieces were tender. I thought the chicken paired especially well with the saffron rice. On previous visits to Aladdin, I had the spicy corn on the cob. The cob has black spots from being cooked, and seasoning fills the cracks between kernels of corn. The first time I tried the corn on the cob, it was spicier than the second time. So the

spice level was inconsistent, but I still enjoyed it both times. Aladdin Mediterranean Grill Address: 1737 W. 34th St. Hours: 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Sunday Pricing: $11.99-$17.99 Kid-friendly: Yes Alcohol: No Healthy options: Yes Star of the show: Chicken kabob

Eagles’ season ends in TAPPS semifinals By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com

Good football seasons come to an end, and that’s what happened to St. Thomas last weekend. The Eagles fell 41-21 at the hands of Dallas Parish Episcopal last Saturday afternoon in a TAPPS Division I state semifinal at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. The loss ended one of St. Thomas’ best seasons in recent years. The Eagles (9-4) had a seven-game winning streak prior to the loss, and they went undefeated in TAPPS district play for the second consecutive year. The nine wins and state semifinal berth, the school’s best finish since the

2015 campaign, were both top marks under coach Rich McGuire. A 10-play drive capped by Maddox Kopp’s scoring toss to Spencer Kryger late in the second quarter cut the Eagles’ deficit to 20-7 late in the first half, sparking some hope after a slow start. However, score by Parish Episcopal (11-1) with 4 seconds left in the half and a Kopp interception on the Eagles’ opening possession of the second half gave the momentum right back. Junior tailback John Fontenot rushed for two fourthquarter touchdowns during a late St. Thomas rally. But it was too little, too late. The Eagles will lose stars such as Daniel Coco, leading

tackler Cooper Thomas, sack leader Chidera Umeh as well as receivers Joshua Crissmon and Kryger to graduation, leaving some big shoes to fill. However, St. Thomas also will return a loaded core that includes Kopp, Fontenot, Drake Martinez and Cameron Bonner on offense and Cameron McCurry, Aidan O’Hare and second-leading tackler Vincent Lee on the defensive side. Coco, Crissmon, McGuire, Thomas, Umeh and kicker Paul Langemeir were recognized for their seasons by the Touchdown Club of Houston at its eighth annual Private High School Awards Dinner on Dec. 4.

Art Valet, from P. 3B visual scene take shape amid the lyrics. It’s like creating a soundtrack in reverse.” Just before their scheduled release, the Stolls were contacted by Spectra Music Group, a record label, and decided to partner with them for this album. “We did a soft release, limited physical only, in November, but our full digital push will happen through Spectra in February,” John said. “This is exciting for us. We had really reached the limit of what DIY can accomplish. Spectra really seems to share our vision and enthusiasm for this album. We couldn’t be happier about this relationship.” Do you have a crazy road story? Has a famous musician stepped up on stage with you? “There are several things that stand out,” John said. “Random fiddle players that are absolute pro-level players jumping on stage in Arkansas with us, the many talented

musicians we’ve had the opportunity to share a stage with, or the 2,000-pound cow that walked onto Highway 6 at midnight as we were trying to drive home...ending badly. “However, the story that sticks out to me most was when we had the chance to play at the VA Hospital in Minnesota. We were invited to play a set for veterans that were recently back from conflict zones. These folks weren’t yet able to go out to experience live music, so a friend of ours up there arranged to bring the music to them. We played our set, and all went well. “But it was what happened after the set that struck me the most. One of the veterans was moved by the music he heard, and he somewhat sheepishly asked me if he could run and grab his guitar and play us a song he wrote. He did - and I played a little lead guitar with him. “And in that moment, that fleeting matter of a few min-

utes that it takes to play a song, I realized that our lives doing this had led us to this point, that I was standing next to a man who had just returned home from serving his country, a man that wrote a song about it. I got the sense that he felt excited to be playing with us. What he didn’t know was that we were completely and totally honored beyond any measure of words to be listening to his song, and

playing alongside him.” Grifters & Shills performs at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at First Saturday Arts Market, located at 530 W. 19th St. The market is open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, visit 1stSatArtMarket.com and griftersandshills.com. Food Briefs, from P. 3B out financially. Sticky’s Chicken coming to Sawyer Yards The food truck Sticky’s Chicken is opening its new brick-and-mortar restaurant in Sawyer Yards at 2313 Edwards St. The truck was started by siblings Benson and Patsy Vivares in 2014. Sticky’s Chicken is known for its signature sauce, which is a family recipe. Sticky’s will serve its signature wings or “sticks,” which are chicken over French fries, along with chicken and rice plates.

According to CultureMap, a bigger kitchen will allow for new menu items, like a chicken sandwich, catering and to-go services. Sticky’s is expected to open early this month.
