Finding Space

Local businesses fighting to stay put, relevant By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As the Christmas season nears and residents make their shopping lists, it begs the question – go big or buy local? More than 96 percent of Houston businesses are classified as “small,” but several business owners in this area have expressed concern over the future of their shops—the types of shops on which much of the area stakes its history and foundation. One such locally-owned entity well-versed in the hardship is Blue Moon Antiques, 3311 Ella Blvd., run by co-owners Kelvin and Alexander. The two opened a shop on 19th Street, then had a shop on 11th Street for many years until the property was bought by a developer and the duo was pushed out. “The same thing is happening here—we will eventually get pushed out, and we don’t know where we’re going to go,” Alexander said. “They’re buying everything in the area and building $25-$45 per square foot spaces—this type of business cannot support that. One of the last holdouts (Chippendales on 19th Street) was just closed.” The owner of Garden Oaks Optical (which sits tucked away in the same strip center at 3303 Ella Blvd.), echoed Alexander’s concerns. “Little by little the small businesses out here are being squeezed out because investors are coming out here, purchasing property and making it too expensive for small shops to hang around,” he said. Houston Small Business Association District Director Tim Jeffcoat noted that such change is inevitable in places such as Houston which is the 4th-largest city in the country; however, there are several ways to combat such issues. “When a place goes through the evolution of development and gentrification, you see a general increase in property values, and an increased

How local shop owners can compete with ‘big business’ Keep It Personal

Local shops can thrive on that personal connection forged through face to face meetings, which is lacking in conglomerately-owned businesses. “As a small business, you have a huge advantage the moment a customer walks in the door. You can greet them personally – often by name. If it’s not you at the front of the house, your employees can do the same thing. Welcome everybody with a smile and kind word. When someone you don’t know comes in, take time to learn their name and a little about them. Big box stores cannot duplicate the personal touch you offer. Capitalize on that. The revenue issue will take care of itself.” – businessknowhow.com

rent,” he said. One suggestion he had to mitigate the effects of such developments if a business has been sucessful to this point and remains in a good financial position is to simply buy the property if it is feasible. “Purchasing a property suitable for your business would allow you to keep catering to your existing clientele,” he said. “Odds are that if you’re seeing those property values rise, you probably want to scoop up one of those properties (if you can).” For additional ideas on how to cope with skyrocketing property taxes and rent if purchase is not feasible, Jeffcoat suggested owners reach out to S.C.O.R.E, a nonprofit association of 125 volunteers at 15 offices across Houston dedicated to helping small businesses succeed through education and mentorship. “Any problem you’ve got, they most likely have already seen it,” he said. Should businesses such as Blue Moon Antiques or Garden Oaks Optical manage to overcome increasing rent and remain in place, along comes

more trouble—what to do about the sheer competition due to the rise of big business on and around their property? “A lot of the small businesses are being left out because a lot of the bigger businesses are being promoted more than we are,” the Garden Oaks Optical owner said. “I understand the reason for that, but there’s a lot of mom and pop shops in the neighborhood that could use a little recognition, if for no other reason than we’ve been able to stick around this long.” Alexander again shared the same concerns. “Because of all that stuff, people don’t come here anymore. A lot of people don’t even seem to know that we’re here—I don’t know what to do,” he said. “We’re a real antique store, but nobody knows about it. We’re here, but they just don’t see us because of the way it works.” Once again, Jeffcoat noted the inSee Local P. 4B

“What you can do is offer to special order whatever the customer wants – even if you don’t stock it. Many big-box stores won’t do that. More importantly, you can make it your business to know the differences between models and be a source of that information which you can provide to your customers..” – businessknowhow.com

Expand horizons with regards to marketing

In an ever-evolving, diverse environment, embrace modern ways to market your product. “Still don’t have a strong online presence? You need one. A good website helps you expand your reach and ability to attract new customers. This especially true if you own a store that sells unique products. Going online will help get the word out and if what you offer is what people want, they will come to you. In addition to a website, consider the value of social networking through Facebook and Twitter.” – businessknowhow.com

Networking

“Don’t overlook the value of joining your local chamber of commerce. In addition to learning from fellow small-business owners, you will have the opportunity to build your reputation in the community, share leads, and potentially gain additional exposure through networking activities and events.” –businessknowhow.com

Redefine “value”

What can you provide with your product the big stores can’t? “The kind of customers that create return business for your company are happy to pay a little more for a better experience. If you make the sale at little to no margin, what good is that customer anyway? Saving a customer time (and money) by personally recommending a product and providing tips on how to use or install it, is a value big box stores can’t provide and the type of customers you’ll attract are loyal and will produce profit.” – businessknowhow.com

Your stocking stuffer store! Are you a responsible pet owner? What about your neighbors?

Soft opening for Wabash

The American Veterinary Medical Association has approved these Guidelines for Responsible Pet Ownership • Committing to the relationship for the life of the pet(s). • Avoiding impulsive decisions about obtaining pet(s). • Recognizing that ownership of pet(s) requires an investment of time and money. • Keeping only the type and number of pets for which an appropriate and safe environment can be provided. • Ensuring pets are properly identied (i.e., tags, microchips, or tattoos) and that registration information is kept up-to-date. • Adherence to local ordinances, including licensing and leash requirements. • Controlling pet(s)’ reproduction through managed breeding, containment, or spay/neuter. • Establishing and maintaining a veterinarian-client patient relationship. • Providing preventive (e.g., vaccinations, parasite control) and therapeutic health care for the life of the pet(s). • Socialization and appropriate training for pet(s). • Preventing pet(s) from negatively impacting other people, animals and the environment. • Providing exercise and mental stimulation appropriate to the pet(s) age, breed, and health status. • Making alternative arrangements if caring for the pet is no longer possible.

Wabash opened its N. Shepherd doors on November 27 – and even without a third of its inventory and the animals, both of which are still to be loaded in – the store is meeting or exceeding the average daily sales of Washington already. There will be a grand opening in January.

Frost Bank to open N. Shepherd branch By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Residents using Frost Bank will no longer feel the need to fight the traffic resulting from construction on Highway 290 for a simple banking need, as the company is finally setting down local roots. The financial center’s newest branch at 4606 N. Shepherd Dr. has a target opening date of Dec. 12, with official opening festivities likely to occur sometime in early March. “We’ll get in, get our feet under us and then have something for the whole com-

munity to come to,” Frost Bank employee and Garden Oaks native Jessica Leone said. Leone said that with growth and expansion dominating the area, residents are in need of quick neighborhood stop at which to figure out life’s financial decisions as changes to their lifestyle come fast and furious.

“We’re a relationship-based bank, we believe in knowing our customers and being a part of the community we’re in,”she said. “Garden Oaks/Oak Forest/Independence Heights/etc is an area that has experienced a lot of change and growth recently, and will probably continue to experience a lot of change. The opportunity finally presented itself for the bank to open a branch there to serve all those communities (in the midst of the change).” Frost Bank on Shepherd Drive will be open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-6p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and closed on Sunday.

Local from P. 1B evitability of such change. “When big businesses move in, you’re facing competition. All businesses face some type of competition, and sometimes that competition grows,” he said. “The big businesses are there, they’re not going to go away—it’s a matter of how you compete with them and carve out your area that’s different from theirs. What do you offer that they don’t?” In keeping with an everevolving landscape, Jeffcoat suggested businesses such as Blue Moon, Garden Oaks Optical and others talk to the Small Business Development System. The organization educates local business owners on diversifying marketing strategy, such as using podcasts to generate buzz, online advertising, opportunities for exporting, boosting business through social media, sales techniques and more. “The whole common theme here is how do you make your business the busi-

ness people want to go see,” Jeffcoat said. “They (businesses) try to learn who those folks are, they try to design those offerings to be exactly what those kinds of people want and they get extremely creative about how they market and present themselves to the public.” In that vein, there is a success story which shops such as Blue Moon and others might be able to look to for inspiration. Darlene’s Flower Shop, located just off Highway 290, has operated in the neighborhood since 1969 and and maintains a loyal customer base to this day amidst the rise of online ordering and grocery stores in the area. Co-owner Susan Tate believes the personal touch neighborhood businesses offer cannot be matched by stores and businesses beneath the major conglomerate umbrella. “We have customers that are still with us and their family members that still

trade with us because of the service they have gotten, and it makes a big difference as opposed to just an order gatherer on the phone,” she said. “The people that come to me don’t want flowers from those grocery stores — they want the personal touch, they want to see what they’re getting and know that if something should happen, they’ve got a person they can come back to and get it taken care of.” While a personal touch is key, Tate echoed Jeffcoat’s thoughts that diversifying how products are marketed makes a difference in the sustainability of a business. “It’s all about how you present it to your customers, and our customers are very loyal,” she said. “With the clothes and everything that we’ve added, we’re very blessed with the business we’ve maintained. We’re here to serve the customer and want them to get what they’re used to.”

POPPING NOISES Chase Baker, D.D.S.

f you sometimes hear a popping noise when you move your jaw joints and have noticed a dull aching in your face or head, this may be caused by myofascial pain dysfunction. This is a common affliction of women under 40 years of age. It is characterized by pain in the temporomandibular or jaw joint and may also lead to headaches, toothaches, and painful limitation of the mouth opening. The condition should be examined promptly by your dentist so it can be corrected before the pain becomes more intense and affects other areas of your head. In extreme cases it may cause blurring of vision and hearing loss. Pain in the jaw joints or temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) can have many causes, such as improperly aligned teeth or the habit of teeth grinding or clenching. The goal of your dentist’s treatment will be to correct any dental problems that are causing TMJ, returning the jaw to its normal function and eliminating spontaneous muscle spasms in the jaw joint area. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

ost of the time when we hear about science and religion, we expect it to be science versus religion, or science and religion in some way attacking each other. But this need not be the case, as we see in a recent book by the Harvard psychologist George Vaillant, entitled “Spiritual Evolution: A Scientific Defense of Faith. Vaillant argues that we are hardwired to be religious. That is, our brains are structured to make us spiritual beings. Positive emotions like joy, compassion and empathy, which are advocated by all of the major religions, are adaptive, whereas the negative emotions like envy, resentment, anger and fear, which all the major religions war against, tend to be maladaptive. Prayer has a positive, calming effect on the brain and the person praying. Whether or not prayer changes the world, it can hardly be doubted that it changes the person who prays, either by calming fears or uplifting the spirit. Vaillant has been criticized by some for “biologizing religion, but his response to this is that philosophers and theologians have not done a complete job of examining religion, and that brain research is simply another way which to examine religion. And since we are a profoundly religious, yet a profoundly unscientific nation, it is nice to occasionally see the two come together in a way that enhances both.

Neighbors: Celebrating 4 and 50 By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com Congratulations to Greg and Lucy Cain who celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary on Dec. 1st. “It’s been a crazy ride with our blended family of five college kids along with a mother-inlaw now living with us,” but Mrs. Cain would not have it any other way. Cain said the couple met in 2007 at an event where Greg was volunteering his time writing wills for senior citizens and his giving heart won her heart. The couple was married Dec. 1, 2012 at Lakewood Methodist Church with their five children, Will, Duncan, Ben, Molly and Zach participating in the wedding. Lucy’s mother, Lupe Fraga, moved in with the family this past March. Greg and Lucy, mazel tov ! Ain’t it nifty? Look who’s

50 … and fabulous! Laurie Christensen of Oak Forest celebrated her 50th with family and friends at a festive gathering at Pete’s Piano Bar recently to celebrate her Nov. 26th birthday. Laurie, you aren’t really 50 – you’re just 21 with 29 years of experience. Ladies – mark your calendars for this Saturday, Dec. 3rd, for the Women’s Self Defense Class to be held at Frank Black Middle School

in the gym from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The class, open to the community and women ages 12 and older, will be taught by Master Derek Stinson, a 5th degree Black Belt in Chun Kuk Do. You don’t want to miss this! Bring your teenage daughters, teenage Girl Scout Troops, your sister, your mother, your best friend and your neighbor. Learn lifesaving techniques for defending oneself in crucial situations. $25 per person or $40 for two if you bring a friend. Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in and pay at the door, cash or check. There is plenty of space for a huge crowd, so definitely bring a friend and learn some tools that will serve you both for a lifetime. Email Karate Parent Network President Nancy Polasek at nthildeb@gmail.com for more information. See you there!

Smart Move

Markeith Williams will get some help on the post, but he’s handled the frontcourt solidly on his own. (Contributed photo)

Transfer helps put Williams on map By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader

Markeith Williams had dreams of attending St. Pius X long before he was finally enrolled in the school midway through last year. “I wanted to go to St. Pius X since I was in the 6th grade and my big brother told me about it,” Williams said. “I wasn’t just interested in the sports, I was impressed with the education that the school offered and the higher possibility to get into a good college.” Williams attended Eisenhower High School until halfway through his sophomore year, and after a basketball game against SPX, he decided to convince his mom to go with him to talk to the Panthers’ head coach, Brandon Scott, to see if they could make his dream a reality. After briefly talking with Scott, Williams, who stands at 6-foot-6, knew that he would be able to help SPX out on the basketball court, especially since they lacked players with his size. “It seemed like the perfect match because they were in need of a big man, and I needed to be more involved in the game,” he said. “We completed

research, toured the school, looked at the success rates for students graduating from high school and college.” Once he and his family finished their analysis, they agreed that moving him to SPX would be the best decision, and so after he finished his finals in his first semester of his sophomore year, he registered at SPX. Due to the way the schedules lined up, though, Williams was ineligible to play on varsity and was forced to suit up for the junior varsity team. Instead of being discouraged, he took it in stride and made the best of his situation. “It wasn’t hard for me at all, even though I had the skill level for varsity,” he said. “The only thing that was on my mind was having fun and getting better for next season.” So far this season, Williams has been the sole big man, but he will receive some backup once the football players are released from the team after they lost in the final seconds of a shootout with Bishop Dunne Catholic School. Joining Williams in the frontcourt are a pair of 6-6 players in senior Dylan Johnson and sophomore Grant Gunnell and a 6-0 sophomore named Jarvis Johnson, according to Scott.

Scott also said before the season started that he has been impressed with the leadership and work ethic that Williams possesses, especially since he is only a junior and most of the players currently on the team are seniors. “I am honored that Coach Scott thinks so highly of me,” Williams said. “I was taught to lead by example. If I hold myself to high standards and genuinely show that I care, others will follow.” So far this season, Williams has helped guide his team to an 8-5 start with big wins in nondistrict play over Antonian College Preparatory High School and St. Thomas Episcopal High. After finishing in third place in district last year, Williams said that the Panthers’ main goal is to win district this season. Williams added that his own personal goal is to make strides off the court by receiving first team all-academic honors. Keeping up with his grades and improving on the basketball court will also help him achieve his next dream: playing at the next level. “It is my desire to play college ball, and I would love to play at Stephen F. Austin (University),” Williams said.
