Art Valet: Creatives carving path into history of Heights Mitch Cohen Art Columnist
Art in the Heights is a hot topic in many conversations over the years about gentrification in Houston’s first planned community. What is the art history of the Heights? That’s a great question as The Leader celebrates 65 years bringing news to the Heights and surrounding communities. When I started searching for the impact art had on the neighborhoods here, I found artists and not much else prior to the 1990s. I moved to the Heights in 1994, and my impression then was that it was where artists lived, so I needed to be with my people. A common sentiment still tossed around: “More professional artists live and work in the Heights than in any other area of Texas.” Anne Sloan, a popular local author and historian, told me she heard that same statement while doing research around 1990. Gus Kopriva, longtime Heights resident and cofounder of Redbud Fine Arts Gallery, recalled putting together a photography event in the early ‘90s at Lambert Hall,
now home to Opera in the Heights. The exhibit, Kopriva said, featured contemporary photography by Houston photographers alongside historic Heights photos from Parsley Studios. Kopriva opened his gallery in 1999, which may have been the first traditional fine art gallery to open in the area. My search got the attention of Pete Gershon, author of “Painting the Town Orange: The Stories Behind Houston’s Visionary Art Environments” and “Collision: The Contemporary Art Scene in Houston 1972-1985.” Gershon orchestrated and interviewed 35 Houston artists this year, with a focus on artists who have been active in the Houston art scene since the 1950s. Beyond that common statement again, even Gershon’s extensive list of contacts didn’t lead to more than artists living and working in the Heights. Gershon suggested I touch base with artist Richard Stout. I was nervous about this call. Stout is a well-known and celebrated artist. I’d mentioned him in an interview here once as an interviewee’s mentor of very high esteem and now I was about to cold call him. Stout was cordial and, after some convincing, opened up about what he knew … he knew the Montrose area, where he’s lived and worked

since buying his home in the late ‘50s shortly after his arrival to Houston. The Montrose area was the art hub of Houston, Stout told me. All the artists lived and/ or had studios there. Geography and affordability put Montrose close to the galleries and downtown. Stout said that as prices increased in the early ‘70s, artists started to flock to the Heights, where prices were considerably less. Was this how the Heights got the reputation for having the highest concentration of professional artists living here? My bet is on yes. The Heights was founded and planned as a mixed-use, working-class neighborhood, Houston’s first suburb where
that lived and/or worked in the Heights for a time: Robert Omerod Preusser (1919-92), Dorothy Hood (1919-2000), Edward Kienholz (1927-94), Luis Jiménez (1940–2006), Dick Wray (1933-2011) and Lucas Johnson (1940-2002). All are easily searchable on the Internet. Visit Pete Gershon’s website, HoustonArtHistory.com, and have a look at his Interview Project. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the lives of artists. I clipped the following from the website: “The Houston Art History Interview Project collects and makes accessible oral histories
from significant members of the city’s art community, with an emphasis on those who’ve rarely had the opportunity to share their stories.” Finally, Sloan brought up another amazing fact about the under-documented history of music recording studios in the Heights. She had me at the formation of George Strait’s Ace in the Hole Band on 11th Street. Wow, but that’s another story. Cohen is an artist and founder of First Saturday Arts Market and the Market at Sawyer Yards. Find him at ArtValet.com.

families could be raised, attend school and work close to home. Just like today’s neighborhoods that continue to expand mile upon mile, art was not at the top of the list the past 65 years. Unless, of course, you happened to be an artist. My conclusion? Artists are a migratory group, and the Heights has had a notably long run of well-known, influential artists living here -- first as a neighborhood and more recently (the past 40 years) because of price and location. Following are a few of the notable artists mentioned in my search that I want to share with you. These amazing, world-renowned artists are but a handful of the artists

REVIEW:
Barbecue Inn is like home cooking but better Zarah Parker Managing Editor
Barbecue Inn has been around awhile -- since 1946 to be exact. And with one bite of its food, it’s easy to see why it’s still in business. More intriguing is that it’s a barbecue joint known for its fried chicken. So much so that when Barbecue Inn is brought up, the first thing I hear is, “The fried chicken is so good, the best in Houston. You have to try it.” So I did. And in case you haven’t tried it, let me say this: You should, too. Barbecue Inn is quaintly situated on the corner of West Crosstimbers Road and Yale Street as one the perfect examples of a neighborhood restaurant. It’s comfortable, the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful and the vibe is so small town that I could have believed I wasn’t in Houston anymore while dining. While visiting the restaurant recently, I ordered the fried chicken. My preference is white meat, but the option for dark meat is available. I also got a side of French fries.
Photo by Zarah Parker Barbecue Inn is known for its fried chicken (foreground). It also serves St. Louis-style ribs along with sides and fresh bread.
Below the fried chicken options on the menu is a little note that says, “Allow minimum of 25-30 minutes.” This is because it’s cooked fresh when ordered. I also got the St. Louis Style Ribs, which came with baked beans and potato salad. My dad and I shared the two plates. While the wait for the food was a little less than half an hour, it didn’t feel that long. Plus, I knew beforehand that I’d be waiting. And the wait was worth it. Two breasts and a wing were piled on top of each oth-
er next to the fries. The freshness of the fried chicken was evident in the heat rising from its crispy breading. Digging into a piece of chicken, I found it to be juicy. Combined with its crispy outer layer, I was hooked. My dad said it reminded him of his grandma’s fried chicken, giving him a little slice of the past. The fries were soft with just a slight crunch to them. In general, fries are always my go-to side because it’s hard to be disappointed by them. These fit right in with the chicken. The ribs also were a treat.
The meat pulled easily and cleanly off the bone and the smoked meat was tender. The barbecue sauce came on the side, and after testing it out I spread the tangy sauce over the ribs. Sometimes I find barbecue sauce to be overwhelming, but this sauce had just enough flavor and subtlety. The other side I tried was the baked beans. It was served at room temperature, which I didn’t mind. They had a kick of sweetness that I enjoyed. The dishes also came with two slices of white bread, which usually wouldn’t be much to comment about. However, I’m pretty sure this was the softest, freshest sliced bread I’ve ever had served with my meal. And that I appreciated. Going to Barbecue Inn is a little like going home, just with even better cooking.

Crockett orchestra plays for downtown crowd By Zarah Parker
Lucas said. “They played a little under an hour, about 45 minutes, which is longer than they’re used to.” On top of the experience of performing, the event also gave way to an education experience. The team at Skanska also shared with the students about the sustainability in buildings. “They were really interested and asked a lot of questions,” Yung said.
zarah@theleadernews.com
Last Friday, an orchestra consisting of stringed instruments played holiday tunes on the steps of Understory in Downtown Houston. The players were third- through fifth-graders from Crockett Elementary School. Skanska USA Building, a project development and construction group that focuses on sustainably, hosted the event featuring the budding musicians as part of a fundraiser for continued support of Crockett’s music program. “Any student at Crockett can choose to be part of the program,” Crockett orchestra teacher Laura Lucas said. “The instruments belong to the school, but the students use them free of charge.” That gives kids from any socioeconomic background the chance to join the music program. When the team at Skanska heard about Crockett’s program, they knew they wanted to be involved with helping maintain it, which is why the event fundraiser was held. The funds go toward main-

taining the instruments used by the students, such as new strings, and obtaining new ones. “All kids begin learning the violin, but as they get into older grades they can choose another stringed instrument,” Lucas said. “If the student comes into the program in a later grade, then they can choose what they want to play.” Aside from contributing funding to the program, the goal of the event was to also
give a new opportunity to the kids. “We wanted to expose the kids to playing in that environment,” said Dennis Yung, executive vice president and general manager of Skanska. Yung said it wasn’t just playing in front of an audience, much of which was a lunch crowd since the concert happened the same hour, but it gave the students an opportunity to play near some of the music halls downtown. “The kids were excited,”

Turner beats Buzbee in mayoral runoff; Cisneros narrowly keeps council seat

Sylvester Turner won another four years as Houston mayor, beating challenger Tony Buzbee in a contentious municipal election that required a runoff. He could continue to work with Karla Cisneros, who barely held on to her seat on the Houston City Council in the unnofficial results released early Dec. 15 by the office of Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman. Turner, an Acres Homes native, was the leading votegetter Nov. 5 and declared victory before the final tallies were made in the Dec. 14 runoff. Turner received 112,955 of the 201,551 votes cast, or 56 percent. Buzbee, an attorney who spent millions of his own money on a campaign centered around criticism of Turner’s first four years at City Hall, received 44 percent. The final results posted early Dec. 15 on harrisvotes. com, which showed all 385 precincts reporting, are unofficial until canvassed. Roxanne Werner, a spokesperson for Trautman’s office, said the official canvas would be completed by Friday afternoon. Races for the area’s three seats on the city council were mostly decided last weekend. The incumbent Cisneros held off Isabel Longoria by 12 votes in District H, which includes the eastern portion of the Heights, Independence

Heights and Sawyer Yards. Cisneros received 5,283 votes compared to 5,271 for Longoria. Werner said there are at least 60 provisional ballots in District H that were being reviewed as part of the official canvas. Shady Acres resident Abbie Kamin beat Garden Oaks’ Shelley Kennedy in District C, which includes most of the area. Kamin received 59.4 percent of the 32,854 votes cast, while Kennedy garnered 40.6 percent. Amy Peck, the chief of staff for outgoing District A council member Brenda Stardig, will take over the seat after a sizable win in the runoff. She appeared on 70.2 percent of the 13,609 ballots, while George Harry Zoes received 29.8 percent of the vote. Each of the five at-large seats on the city council also went to a runoff. Mike Knox, Michael Kubosh and David Robinson were re-elected in three of the positions, while Letitia Plummer edged Anthony Dolcefino in position 4 and
Sallie Alcorn beat Eric Dick in position 5. There also was a runoff for one of the area’s two seats on the Houston ISD Board of Education. Kathy BluefordDaniels claimed the District II seat by receiving 62.2 percent of the vote, while John Curtis Gibbs received 37.8 percent. Despite her election, Blueford-Daniels may not have voting power on the school board for at least half of her four-year term. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath told HISD in November that he plans to replace the nine publicly elected trustees with a state-appointed board of managers, citing the continued unacceptable academic performance by Wheatley High School — Blueford-Daniels’ alma mater — as well as the results of a Texas Education Agency investigation that found trustees overstepped their authority and violated Texas’ open meetings laws as well as contract procurement rules.

Volunteers make St. Mark’s Christmas pageant possible By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Emily Chapman, the senior pastor at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Pecore Street, said its annual Christmas pageant is a tradition that goes back for more than 20 years. So when a two-alarm fire damaged much of the campus on Sept. 20, it was not a certainty that the show would go on. The fire damaged many of the church buildings. Its cause has not yet been determined, according to Chapman. “We just finished basic remediation for the smoke smell,” Chapman said. “It will be a long time before we can rebuild.” The sanctuary, however, is useable. Although past pageants at St. Mark’s have utilized the church’s grounds, this year the pageant will take place in the sanctuary because of the loss of the church’s light and sound equipment. The pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, and 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22. The live animals that have been part of the program will be there again, but will understandably remain outside. Another hurdle, however, was the costumes. “They were in the basement of fellowship hall, which got water,” Chapman said. “Some of them were restored, but some couldn’t be.” That’s where the Houston Heights Association’s Emily Guyre stepped in. “My best friend goes to church at St. Mark’s and I was there on the day of the fire,” Guyre said. “Both of my kids’ scout troops are chartered from there. We love that church.” Guyre’s call on social media for volunteers to make costumes was answered in spades. Patterns were distributed and people handmade – or are finishing up this week – about 50 costumes for shepherds and angels. The cast for the pageant is large, about 80 people, so more than half of
Contributed photo Thanks to volunteers who made almost 50 costumes for St. Mark’s annual Christmas pageant, the tradition will continue, even after a devastating September fire.
the show’s costumes will be new. Patti Newby is a member of St. Mark’s whose grandmother was a charter member. “My parents were married there and my brother and I were baptized at St. Mark’s,” Newby said. “I used to sing in the choir (for the pageant).” Her job is now to serve as the camel handler, but she was willing to do whatever her church needed to make the pageant possible. “I told them I could make costumes,” Newby said. “I got some deals on fabric during Black Friday. They’re not hard to do.” Rose Brewer is making all the children’s shepherd costumes and said that was what she wanted her focus to be.
She is the one who walks out at the end of the pageant with the children to adore the Baby Jesus. “I’m all about the kids,” Brewer said. Eighth grade Girl Scout Troop 25365 led by Wendy Smith-Butler - with Meredith Sipes as chief sewer - is making angel costumes for the children’s choir, complete with wings. Chapman said the church is grateful for all the help it has received since September. “We got all kinds of things we needed, food, supplies,” Chapman said. “There was a book drive to replace the books for our Little Free Library. This is a great neighborhood and community. I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

Bike giveaway at local schools delivers students freedom, fun
Congratulations to The Leader on 65 Years while we Celebrate Our 55th Year!
By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
It has been a very good month for children at some local elementary schools. Last week, CYCLE Houston gave every second-grade student at Stevens Elementary a new bike and new helmet. And this week, the Can’d Aid Foundation and Good360 hosted two bike-building events and delivered new bikes and helmets to first-graders at Field Elementary School in the Heights and Jefferson Elementary School in Northside. Stevens Elementary PTCO Vice President Ashli Garcia said the connection to CYCLE Houston was made through Stevens’ staff members and was the first partnership between the school and organization. Since 2004, CYCLE has committed to improving literacy among children in second grade in Title I schools in the Greater Houston area. The 87 second-graders at Stevens – which was the entire grade – met their literacy milestones and received the bikes as a reward. CYCLE Executive Director Rebecca Roberts said the organization has distributed 5,000 bikes this year to Title I schools, which have a percentage of low-income students and receive federal funding. “We raise the money and then the bikes are made from our own design,” Roberts said. Volunteers came out Dec. 10 to set up the bikes. Once the thrilled recipients chose the ones they wanted, the volunteers also helped size the bikes and helmets. Garcia said the bikes, along with other support – like the 10 Kindles that Resource One recently donated for a school raffle – does a lot for student pride and overall morale. “It’s nice to see such a great school getting the support it deserves,” Garcia said. Diana Ralston is the executive director of the Can’d Aid

Foundation, which seeks to mobilize people where they live. “Our unique, grassroots model mobilizes people of all walks of life,” Ralston told the INSPIRED IMPACT blog series. “We call this ‘peoplepowered do-goodery.’” Ralston said her organization has partnered with Good360, an organization with a mission to help companies donate excess merchandise to charities instead of destroying it. The two groups have worked on bike giveaways across the country and were seeking students in Harris County who had been particularly affected by Houston’s series of inclement weather events, most recently Tropical Storm Imelda. The groups’ game plan is first to host a bike build at a local craft brewery – in this case Eureka Heights Brew Co. in the Heights and 11 Below Brewing Company in the Willowbrook area. Ralston said the craft breweries serve a dual purpose as a fun place for volunteers to congregate and a warehouse-type building that can accommodate the pallets of bike parts that need to be shipped.

The breweries invited volunteers on social media. Can’d Aid and Good360 also did targeted ads for volunteers. “We’ve never had a problem getting volunteers,” Ralston said. A first-timer can put together a bike in 20 minutes and an experienced one can do it in less than 10, according to Ralston, who also said the bikes go through a qualitycontrol process. After they were surprised with new bikes, the first-graders at Jefferson and Field were also treated to a surprise biketrick demo with professional mountain biker Jeff Lenosky. Lenosky holds the world record for the highest bunny hop. A New Jersey native, Lenosky has been working with Can’d Aid for four years to spread the news to kids about the freedom and fun that come with owning a new bike. “Our students were thrilled to receive the bicyles and you can hear their joyous shouts,” Field Principal John Hendrickson said.

Photo by Zarah Parker Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, right, looks at the mural depicting Lesha Adams and Jesse Perez painted by Jessica Padilla, left.
Shepherd mini mural serves as memorial for killed pedestrians By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com
While passing 10th Street on North Shepherd Drive, motorists will be greeted by the face of a woman painted on a utility box. When facing south, they’ll see the image of a woman pushing a man in a wheelchair. On the sides are angel wings. “This is a tribute to the two pedestrians who were killed on March 30, Jesse Perez and Lesha Adams,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said. Adams and Perez were struck by a car while Adams was trying to help Perez, who was wheelchair-bound, cross Shepherd at 10th Street. At that time, there was no light or crosswalk at the intersection. In June, the city unveiled a hybrid pedestrian beacon to allow walkers and wheelchair users to push a button connected to the east side of Shepherd that would turn the
light red and prompt drivers to stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the street. The mural was painted by Jessica Padilla, who also painted the mini mural of Nobel Peace prize recipient Malala Yousafzai at T.C. Jester Boulevard and Ella Boulevard, as well as the mini mural of the four women who have served on the United States Supreme Court at the end of Heights Boulevard, in front of Hamilton Middle School. Surrounding the face of Adams and the image of Adams pushing Perez are multi-colored triangles that resembled stained glass. “I chose to use bright happy colors because I didn’t want it to be a painful reminder for the family and friends,” Padilla said. The mini mural was funded by the office of Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Cohen, the outgoing Houston City Council member for District C.

Gardeners: Tim and Debbie Elliott; Master Gardener Beth Galiano SHEPHERD PARK PLAZA / GARDEN OAKS - NEW GREENHOUSE! The Shepherd Park Plaza/Garden Oaks Community Garden has been an integral and active part of Northwest Houston since its start in 1985. The Garden was established by neighbors who wanted to provide a place to grow their own food and meet fellow residents with gardening interests. The garden is located on Alba Street, halfway between Sue Barnett and Chamboard and is now directed by Master Gardener Beth Galiano, trained at Mercer Arboretum. Mrs. Galiano recently received a gift from her husband of a new 12 x 20 ft greenhouse for the Community garden. The main garden features 12 plots, approximately 4’ x 50’ in size...while the new Greenhouse is designed to protect new plants, just budding, and from garden pests. Neighbors are welcome to visit the garden and chat with workers about what they are doing - and volunteer to help. Mrs. Galiano can be contacted at aeg3579@gmail.com These days, you needn’t look to far-flung rural fields or hundredacre farms to find food growing. Chances are there’s food growing right in your neighborhood. Community gardens add great value to neighborhoods by bringing people together, providing a healthy outdoors activity and providing needed food for low income families free of charge.
