Turkey Day rituals run deep for area residents Zarah Parker Managing Editor
T
hanksgiving meal staples include turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pie, and locals are happy to keep the tradition going year after year. Yet, there’s no way of knowing for certain if the fowl that graced the pilgrims’ table was in fact turkey. However, turkey is a uniquely North American bird, making it the most popular choice after Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1836. Of course, the pilgrims didn’t have potatoes and cranberry sauce either, but Thanksgiving doesn’t feel right without them. “[I’m] super traditional. Exact same meal every year. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, candied yams, mashed potatoes, rolls, green bean casserole, relish tray,” local resident Suzanne Calpito Ragsdale said. “It’s all delicious together.” A big part of the Thanksgiving meal is the preparation that goes into it, which local Karen Demel Looney knows well. “I’m the one who stays up Wednesday night until early Thursday morning to get everything prepped for cooking and serving on Thanksgiving Day,” Looney said. Not everyone sees long hours in the kitchen just for one meal as being worth it as some order their Thanksgiving meals to go or they eat out. But for many, the time in the kitchen isn’t considered work. It’s part of the fun and tradition of Thanksgiving. “I love to cook, and my peeps love to eat,” Looney

said. “It’s the ultimate opportunity to use every tool and dish in my kitchen.” Then there are locals who only get up early on Thanksgiving Day just for a particular kind of pie. “I get in line at Flying Saucer around 5 a.m.,” Andy Tomczeszyn said. The best way to cook a turkey varies from home to home, and although roasted turkey is a favorite, some smoke or even fry their turkey. “[My husband] gets up early to smoke the turkey. When it’s done, we throw all the meats we can find in the
smoker,” Debbie Vina said. “To our kids, Thanksgiving smells like smoke.” As another local resident pointed out, the Thanksgiving meal is more than just what’s put on the table and how good it tastes. “It’s not about the food exactly. It’s about making the same meal your mom made and her mom before her,” Alycia Harvey said. “And it’s OK to add to or twist to make your own, but you’re passing to your children the memories that were passed to you.” Thanksgiving brings families back together to share
a meal that sometimes isn’t possible the rest of the year. As some members of the family move to another city or state, Thanksgiving is a time for them to come back home. For local Debbie Kotzur, Thanksgiving is hosted at her mother’s house, where attendance numbers vary each year from 30-60. “The best part for my family is the day before,” Kotzur said. “Those that can be together (get) ready with chopping, dicing, prepping, etc. (It’s) laid back with a lot of sharing and tasting and drinking. Always fun. “The Thursday morning is
great as the ladies continue to prep, watch football and parades,” she added. “My brothers and nephews play football at American Legion Park (in the Turkey Bowl). They started some 40 years ago. (We) start eating around 2-3 p.m. (It’s a) great day with whatever family can be there.” Thanksgiving Day is about spending quality time with your family, and it’s made even better by the traditions kept each year, which include the delicious food for which the family gathers around the table.
Host a Thanksgiving potluck By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com While there are more than 50 million people who will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday to be with family, there are millions more who are staying put and eating with friends. “We started our friends Thanksgiving 19 years ago,” Garden Oaks’ Stella Stevens said. “We started it by complaining about how dry our parents’ turkey was, and how our older relatives always got first dibs on the good leftovers. And then, a radical idea was born — have a Thanksgiving with the people you really love, with the food you like that does not taste like cardboard. The first year we burnt a semipermanent hole in our yard frying a turkey. We are much better cooks now and it’s been going strong ever since.” For others who are hosting friends for the first time, the novelty is part of the fun. Lauren Benesh of Ella Lee Forest remembers hosting school friends when she and her husband lived in New England. “Our group consisted of couples from Texas, Oklahoma, the Pacific Northwest, France, Australia and more,” Benesh said. “I think the mark for that group was that it was our first time to do a holiday on our own, so everything felt new and like an experiment — even making Photo supplied the traditional dishes we grew up with. Worthy mentions for the Thanksgiving dine-out plan By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Not everyone enjoys spending hours in the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning. So instead of prepping and cooking, let the professionals take over. Here’s a few of our local restaurants that are opening their doors for customers to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal without the hassle: For a Thanksgiving meal on the wilder side, Rainbow Lodge, 2011 Ella Blvd., is serving on Thanksgiving Day at $60 per person. To start you can sample a trio of wild game, like elk, rabbit, and buffalo, or try the smoked duck gumbo. They will be serving the more traditional southern-style roasted turkey with cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, French beans with shallots, gravy and cranberry relish. They’ll also be serving rainbow trout with lump crab and pecan brown butter with roasted garlic-sautéed kale and crispy sweet potato curls, a wild game duo of grilled venison medallions and a whole Texas quail with roasted pumpkin grits, Swiss chard and pear and pecan conserve, and lastly a grilled beef tenderloin filet with root vegetable hash, grilled asparagus and bearnaise sauce. To top it off, a warm croissant bread pudding, a southern-style chocolate bourbon pecan pie and a gluten-free lemon ice box pie will be available. Make reservations soon by calling (713) 861-8666. Rainbow Lodge will also have late-night snack packs available of turkey, dressing and gravy, which will just be
enough for one sandwich. For only a slight spin on the traditional Thanksgiving meal, The Classic All Day, 5922 Washington Ave., is serving red kuri squash soup or frisse lardon salad to start. For the main course they’re serving maple-glazed turkey, or for a less traditional meal, herb-crusted butcher’s cut and the seafood option, the local catch. It’ll be hard to say no to butter-whipped potatoes on the side as well as the smoked turkey gravy, fall market vegetables or the challah and hazelnut dressing. To end this Thanksgiving meal on the right side of the stomach, enjoy a slice of pecan pie with vanilla ice cream or a chocolate cake with fudge pecan icing.

The Classic All Day will be serving on Thanksgiving Day at $40 a person. For reservations call (713) 868-1131. For something simpler that won’t break the bank, Cadillac Bar, 1802 Shepherd Dr., is serving its famous Thanksgiving brunch. They’ll have regular brunch items available, including: the breakfast station, waffle station, omelet station, taco station, enchilada station and dessert station. Specifically for Thanksgiving, they’ll be serving a holiday station complete with roasted turkey and ham, turkey pot pie, short ribs with a chipotle-whiskey glaze, cranberry sauce, ghost pepper cheese and bacon mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and cornbread stuffing.

Art Valet: ArtCrawl is 26, the last WHAM Mitch Cohen Art Columnist
If you’re totally clueless about what to do this weekend, just drive around near downtown and you’re bound to run into an art reception, open house, festival or market. Let me make this easier for you, so here are my picks for the weekend: Let’s start with Friday evening when Fresh Arts, the nonprofit that helps artists in the business of art, celebrates the 13th anniversary edition of the Winter Holiday Art Market (WHAM) at Winter St. Studios. This is Houston’s largest indoor event of its kind and, sadly, the last year as well. The $15 entrance fee for the ugly sweater-themed preview party Friday evening is totally worth it. Free admission for amazing shopping all day Saturday and Sunday. See who’s coming, what treats, drinks and entertainment will be offered and buy tickets at FreshArts.org. Winter Street Studios, 2nd floor, 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007. Twenty-six years ago there was exactly one art event on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, ArtCrawl Houston. I’m guessing about the one part, but still, with more than 200 participating artists, 20 warehouse spaces, restaurants, galleries and other spaces this Saturday, ArtCrawl Houston is definitely the granddaddy of art events and the largest organized art event in Houston. There are six do-not-miss spaces I recommend. No. 1 is ArtCrawl headquarters, of course, Mother Dog Studios,
the oldest surviving warehouse in Houston, where ArtCrawl was founded in 1992. My nonagenarian friend and artist, Carolyn Bertrand Hodges, has a painting here, too. 720 Walnut St. Two, Canal Street Studios, 5210 Canal St. The 1940s warehouse in the East End is only open to the public for open studios during ArtCrawl. It has 10 artist studios and is definitely the real deal. Visit with painter P.A. Mueller in her studio while you’re there and Claire Drennan’s too. Claire knits her contemporary art for both wearables and display. Three is Hardy & Nance Street Studios, 902 Hardy St. Open Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the studio artists, H&N has teamed up with Artists for Artists, a nonprofit organization that provides Emergency Recovery Grants designed to assist eligible artists experiencing career-threatening emergencies. Artists for Artists will showcase a group of Houston’s top artists’ work in the H&N Gallery. A portion of their sales will help other artists in need. https://artists4artists.org/ From H&N walk over to Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance St., for great TexMex, live music and visit with artists Dee Franklin, Lisa Hilton, Janice Jackson, Cherie Salinas, Sayra Vallejo, Angela Walling and Joseph Ybarra. Elder Street Artist Lofts, 1101 Elder St., 77007, tour the open studios in this historic building. This is the former Jefferson Davis Hospital, reportedly the most haunted building in Houston, until the artists scared off the ghosts! Ask them, the full listing of artists is at elderstreetartists.com. Then there’s CustomSpace, JoMar Visions, 5301 Polk St. Bldg 14. Many artists

Car show provides looks at past, garage’s future By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com Rain initially washed out the Oldie & Goodie Classic Car Show, which was scheduled for Sept. 16 but had to be scrapped. More showers drenched the area Sunday, the rescheduled date for the ninth annual event held at Adolf Hoepfl & Son Garage, but did not put a dent in the festivities. This time, the shop had a fix. The construction of a new 500-square foot service center, which began in August and is slated to be completed by the end of the year, allowed the car show to go off without a hitch. Accompanying the 23 cars and trucks on display under a raised roof was Veterans Day-themed entertainment such as live music, a bounce house for kids and refreshments including cupcakes and popcorn. “We didn’t have the driveway (in September), and it was too muddy. It just wasn’t going to work,” said garage co-owner Kathryn van der Pol, who was better-equipped two months later. “I said, ‘We’re going to make our own sunshine. It’s indoors, the cars will be fine, people will be fine, and we’ll get through it. We’ll have fun.’ ” That was the consensus among the 100 or so attendees of the car show, which provided a preview of the future of the 72-year-old garage and also a trip back in time. Eugene Hoepfl, the “son” in the business’ name who sold it to van der Pol and her husband, Sybren, in 2004, was a featured guest. Most of the featured automobiles were built in the 1950s and ’60s. Proceeds from the event, held on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, benefitted Mister McKinney’s Historic Houston and Houston History Bus as well as the

Battleship Texas Foundation. Shots fired from the Battleship Texas, at a German Uboat in April 1917, were the first fired by Americans during the war. “People are learning about the mission of the Houston History Bus and the mission of the Battleship Texas,” McKinney said. “We’re doing it in our own ways to educate kids about history. We’re doing something great. I think it’s wonderful to have (the garage’s) support in the initiative.” Raffles also were held for various prizes, including a surround sound system, wireless chargers and gift certificates for auto repairs and oil changes. Two of the top prizes in the car show went to Eduardo Jimenez and his sonin-law, Nicholas Clifton, who were recognized for both of the automobiles they entered. Their blue 1967 Ford Mustang Coupe, purchased and restored in Houston, was awarded Best in Show. Their 1967 Ford F100, painted a shade of purple with Fordthemed flames on the sides and tailgate, was honored as Top Custom. On the truck’s glove box is the signature of the late George Barris, a Hollywood
auto customizer who designed the “Munster Koach” and “Batmobile” used in the popular 1960s television shows. “It feels pretty good,” Clifton said of the wins. “It’s the first time entering (the Mustang). (The truck) entered two years ago here, but we didn’t win anything.” Fitting the Veterans Day
theme, many of the cars and trucks in the show were adorned with American flags. It was the first time the Oldie & Goodie show was held on the holiday, but it likely won’t be the last time. Kathryn van der Pol, who gave visitors customized plastic cups filled with pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution, said holding the event on Veterans Day fits with its mission as well as her personal principles. So she intends to keep it on that date, regardless of the weather. “For me, it’s about bringing people together and having a good time and celebrating something you’re passionate about,” she said. “We love cars, we love history, we love veterans, we love Houston.”
