When Rick Nixon, M.D., started practicing orthopedic surgery 23 years ago, his total knee replacement patients underwent the traditional procedure – an 8- to 12-inch incision made along the front of the leg and a cut into the quadriceps tendon to turn the kneecap over and expose the damaged joint. Today, Dr. Nixon, who is affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Joint Center at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, uses a newer quadriceps-sparing knee replacement procedure that allows for faster rehabilitation and recovery. Rebecca Wallett, one of many beneficiaries of his expertise, was 51 when Dr. Nixon replaced the joint in her left knee. “I had bad arthritis and my knees kept getting worse over a couple of years,” Wallett said. “Eventually I was bone to bone in both knees and in constant pain. We tried conservative treatment – I’d been getting steroid shots for several years. Finally, I’d had enough.” Dr. Nixon replaced her left knee using a minimally invasive technique that involves a small incision on the side of the knee. “The quad-sparing approach involves less trauma to tissue, which means less pain and a faster recovery for the patient,” he said. “Rehabilitation is quicker than the traditional surgery, and cosmetically the incision is more appealing. The procedure itself is more time-con-

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, consumers will not only be trading cash, gifts and treats in the coming months but also their germs and, potentially, the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and data collected from a 32-year period, the peak month of flu activity is usually February, followed by December, January and March. However, seasonal flu activity can begin in October and can extend as late as May. While people can take proper steps with hygiene, like washing their hands and coughing into their elbows, the most effective thing people can do is to get vaccinated, Dr. Rodrigo Najera of Memorial Hermann Northwest said. “Every year we have a lot of influenza cases and some can get really complicated,” Najera said. “We expect a lot of cases this time of the year and we recommend patients get immunized as soon as possible to prepare for the upcoming season.” According to the CDC, seven influenza vaccine manufacturers project as many as 151 million to 156 million doses of influenza vaccines will be available nationwide during the 2014-15 flu season. The CDC recommends the use of the nasal spray vaccine for children 2 through 8 years of age who have “no underlying medical condition that predisposes them to influenza complications.” If the nasal spray vaccine is unavailable, children should still get the flu shot.

The weather is cooler and the holiday season, with all its attendant stresses, approaches. There’s no better time to get active and maybe get a two month jump on those New Year’s Resolutions. Here are some ideas from Leader readers who recently chimed in on social media with their favorite fall fitness activities:

Residents can find more locations to receive vaccinations by using Health-

Flu, from P. 1B Najera emphasized that, when it comes to questions about health and vaccines, the best source of information is always a doctor. “There are some misconceptions among people that might prevent or delay them from getting vaccinated,” Najera said. “Some believe that such vaccines are linked to autism but that’s not the case. Others might believe the vaccine makes you sick and actually gives you influ-

still the best way to protect against infection. “People should still certainly make time to go and get vaccinated, particularly those who are most at risk such as young children and older adults,” Najera said. “You can end up saving a lot of people’s lives by being reminded of the dangers of flu season.” For more information and reports about this year’s flu season, visit www.cdc.gov/ flu/index.htm.

Houston Eye Associates embracing growth eye conditions which previously required separate procedures. “It’s a more precise type of surgery,” Jong said. “We can use it to correct astigmatism, which a typical cataract surgery will not be able to do. When we combine that with a multi-focal implant, we can also correct people’s need for reading glasses.” Typically, about 20 percent of current patients opt for the laser cataract surgery, and Jong believes the procedure is still both relatively new and relatively unknown among many people coming into his office. “More people should be asking about it,” Jong said. Jong is available at the North Loop office Monday mornings through Wednesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons through Friday morning. The North Loop location is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and appointments can be made by phone at 713-4261339 and online at www. houstoneye.com.

Keeping off holiday pounds a test of willpower By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com With Thanksgiving dinner and desserts creeping up around the corner, it’s important to keep in mind healthy eating habits and choices to avoid those extra holiday pounds. Karen Manners, a dietitian with Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, said one of the biggest things people should keep in mind are portion sizes. During the holidays, people may have a tendency to eat more, with all the temptation of buffets at gatherings like dinner parties and family celebrations. “I think the biggest thing is to be aware of what you’re eating,” Manners said. “It’s ok to have bites of the food you’re craving or wanting and people generally indulge a little bit more this time of the year. Often times we go to these outings and we’re just starving.”

Standing near tables of food and socializing can heighten the temptation to go back for another round of treats, Manners said. She recommends using smaller plates to help control portion sizes and start with the foods or snacks people are really craving and then move to fruits, vegetables and other healthier options. “It’s a question of willpower at times,” Manners said. “As long you try to do a little bit of the good with a little bit of the bad, you’ll be fine.” Alcohol can also factor into holiday weight gain, but it also depends on what people choose to drink, Manners said. “If you have a glass of wine or a beer, it’s better than a drink like peppermint schnapps,” Manners said. “Mixers add in a ton of calories and you can easily have mixed drinks with over 600 calories each.” While people might be ready to reach for that next Pumpkin

Spice Latte or specialty coffee, Manners gives the same caution regarding other drinks. “Those lattes and coffees could easily be 500 to 600 calories each,” Manners said. If party-goers are afraid of overeating at gatherings, Manners suggests having a snack before leaving and watching alcohol intake. As the alcohol begins to take hold, people can become more inhibited, which can lead to more eating. To put it in perspective, Manners said one hundred calories a day could equal ten pounds of weight gained in one year. This is why exercise also plays a vital role in keeping off holiday weight. “If we just went out and walked thirty minutes to an hour a day, it would make a big difference,” Manners said. “If people are visiting family or staying in hotels, utilizing gyms are also a big help but walking is going to be the best bet.”

Thinking of going back for seconds? If you’re worried about putting on that year-end weight, you might want to think again.

Manners also advises rethinking how to hold on to leftovers. “I always encourage patients to package up and freeze their leftovers as opposed to holding on to them and eating them in the immediate future,” Manners said. “Once you have that sweet tooth or craving,

it’s hard to stop so you really have to make sure to eat those smaller portions.” In the end, it’s important to keep in mind what the holidays are about. “This time of year isn’t about food, necessarily,” Manners said. “Yes, it’s about getting together, but it’s more

about socializing and seeing old friends and family. Focus on the social aspect and try to stay busy with things like decorating or other activities to help fight those urges or cravings for another plate of food.”

Houston Heights Womens Club kicks off Fall season with events For The Leader

Ad # 36774

The Houston Heights Woman’s Club ended October on a high note with two of its Fall celebrations, including its Sixth Annual Witches Luncheon and the annual Founders Day Reception. The HHWC invited a “coven” of 80 of its members, dressed suitably as witches, out to its luncheon at Kris Bistro Wine Lounge last week. Attendees enjoyed a three course meal with Halloween flair and awards were also presented for best costume, best theme and best hat. Kelley Mathena, First Vice President, and Ginnie McConn, President, awarded best costume to Melvalene Cohen, best theme to Shea Sanderfer Hill with runner up Lauren Lindsay and best hat to Tracey Dascus. The HHWC also held its annual Founders Day Reception Oct. 19. The event is held in memory of one of the organization’s founding members, Hortense Ward. The HHWC recognizes an outstanding female law student every year

who exemplifies the qualities of public service and commitment to social issues. Jannell Robles, a law student at South Texas College of Law, received this year’s award and was selected from several candidates to receive a scholarship from the HHWC. Over 60 attendees also listened to featured guest speaker Lisa Falkenberg, a columnist for the Houston Chronicle. Falkenberg shared views on

the upcoming elections and invited questions and comments from guests, and a light dinner followed the program. For more information about the HHWC and how to join, visit www.houstonheightswomansclub.com

f you’ll be waiting for a crown to be fitted to a tooth, chances are you’ll be given a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. The “temporary” will have cosmetic value in maintaining the appearance of your mouth. It will also serve some important functions, such as maintaining the proper space and bite relationships with adjacent and opposing teeth. Often the temporary crown will be made of acrylic material of the exact shade to match your other teeth. But it is not intended to last very long, only until the permanent crown is in place to give the tooth long-lasting protection. Sometimes a temporary crown may have to last several months. This can happen if other work has to be completed before the crown is put in place. If this is the case, a longer-lasting temporary crown can be made. The temporary crown is usually cemented in with a very weak cement so that it is easily removed. If it should come off before the permanent crown is ready, be sure and tell your dentist. An unprotected tooth could cause further problems. Nov. 8 & 29 – Shopping Focus

Dec. 13 – Gift Guide

The Leader will take a look at the trends in shopping, and tell readers some of the best deals out there (including yours).

This one is new and unique to our area. In this edition, we’ll take a product from your store, write a description of that product, and offer it in a very specific guide to gifts available at your store.

Nov. 15 – Santa Stops Here In this edition, The Leader’s own Santa will visit businesses in the area, take pictures at your store, and we’ll run those pictures in The Leader, letting our readers know you’re open and ready for the holiday rush.

Nov. 22 – Black Friday/Thanksgiving It’s the biggest edition of the year, and this is the day when everyone goes digging for the newspaper, trying to find the best sales for Black Friday. You can’t miss this edition.

Dec. 6 – A-to-Z, 1-to-10 In this edition, we feature a separate shopping section that serves as a directory for gift buyers. The A-Z section is sold separately, but you’ll be part of this edition where readers are looking for the best deals in town.

Dec. 20 – Letters to Santa For the first time, The Leader will publish Letters to Santa from children all over the area. Traditionally, this is one of the best-read sections of any newspaper, and you’ll love having your advertisement right next to these enjoyable notes.

Dec. 27 – Seasons Greetings Our Dec. 27 edition will actually be delivered on Dec. 23, before Christmas. We’re doing that to give our employees Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with their families. The Leader will be resting on the mantle, right next to the stockings, on Christmas, and there’s no better place to share your greetings with loyal customers.

METRO promotes first female to top police department post For The Leader The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County announced it has promoted Vera Bumpers to Chief of Police, making her the first woman and the first African American promoted to the top police post. Bumpers joined METRO before the agency had a police force, according to a press release. “I started in 1981 and at that time, it was a security department,” Bumpers stated. “There were no more than 30 of us; like a little family. It was overwhelming for me coming to a big city; I came right out of college.” The San Antonio native earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Texas State University - the same institution where former MPD Chief and now President & CEO Tom Lambert attended. The two were university colleagues at the time, but didn’t cross paths until the two joined METRO. Bumpers received her graduate degree from Prairie View A&M University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Over her 30-plus year career at METRO, trail blazer Bumpers has held posts at every level of command - and was the first female to do so - officer, sergeant, lieutenant,

captain and assistant police chief. Bumpers replaces Tim Kelly as chief. Kelly now has a new role at METRO. “Bumpers has been a dedicated employee, and will en-

sure we stay focused on providing a safe and secure system,” stated Tim Kelly, METRO’s Executive Vice President of Operations, Public Safety & Customer Service.
