Elections and their local impact How presidential election cycles affect the business atmosphere By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
The divisiveness which has pervaded the 2016 presidential election is palpable on a daily basis, with much of the rhetoric capturing national issues—and justifiably so. However, effects from a presidential campaign trail and its resulting winner can have a trickle-down effect, and The Leader decided to investigate how the aura surrounding presidential election cycles can impact the business atmosphere. Area realtor Janet Schmidt said presidential election time tends to drive the homeowners among them to stay put, thereby driving down sales around the industry. Whether it be buying a new home or upsizing/remodeling an existing one, everybody sits still, always wary of the unknown potential dramatic shift in the market which can accompany a monumental shift in
leadership. “They have no idea what to do,” Schmidt said. “They’re kind of worried about what’s going to happen and who’s going to get into the office. People don’t want to upsize or
get a bigger house payment, because they’re afraid that their insurance rates are going to keep rising, so they won’t have the funds to buy the bigger house.” “I think they believe if they start
making drastic changes, they’re not going to have enough money to make that commitment. Changes costs people a lot of money,” she added. “There may be jobs lost and jobs that people don’t have, so

They weigh things a little differently before they make purchases.” When such an occurrence comes to fruition, Van der Pol said small businesses must work double time in order to retain their client base. “I believe that when we know there is something out there beyond our control, we don’t just sit

Bringing convenience to patient care By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com The days of Heights residents fighting long lines, needless wait times and the high-stress Houston traffic for both specialty and every-day care will soon be a thing of the past. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights has undergone a massive transformation in patient care in recent years (as evidenced by receiving the McKesson Quest for Quality award earlier this year), and by this time next year, Heights residents will have access to an extension of that care —a convenient care center located in the heart of the Heights. “What this does for the community is allow them to access the high-quality care they are used to experiencing under the umbrella of Memorial Hermann without having to actually go the main hospital,” Memorial Hermann System Senior Vice President and Chief Facility Services Manager Marshall Heins said. “We’re offering that care more conveniently located to where people live. We know that people are getting their care close to where they live as opposed to where they
work or shop.” As opposed to many urgent care and other alternative care centers, the Heights Convenient Care Center will house many of the same services — such as a fully-licensed emergency room and emergency staff physicians — available at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, simply in a more convenient location for some residents, with no advance appointment necessary. “The new center will be a game changer for families in the greater Heights community,” Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Senior Vice President and CEO Susan Jadlowski said. “The facility will be a one-stop shop healthcare center that will provide an array of services geared towards handling everything from family to emergency care.” The imaging center is not just a room with X-ray, as it also contains an MRI, CT scanner and more. From there, there will be a sports medicine rehab facility; but it’s not just an exercise room.
A fully-certified staff with rehab technicians will treat patients with the latest in rehab equipment, technology and protocols. “This will be simply an extension of MHGH around the corner should families ever need that higher level of care,” Jadlowski said. “We are excited about the center becoming a part of the continuum of high-quality and safe care we provide here.” An additional specialty clinic will also be housed directly next door to the regular facility when Memorial Hermann’s newest center opens, thereby offering residents an opportunity to see their specialty doctor without being forced to travel all the way to Katy or Cypress or fight traffic to the Medical Center. “It’s an opportunity for residents of the Heights where they already have full access to an in-patient hospital, and now have easy access to this and also the urgent care center down the street,” Memorial Hermann Director of Planning and Development Jason Glover said. “You really have
many points through which to access high-reliability and quality healthcare Memorial Hermann invests in for the residents of the community.” The Heights convenient care center will be located the west side of Studemont

fect on the atmosphere and business, she said it has not exactly given many small business owners or customers a warm, fuzzy feeling going forward either. “We don’t know exactly how it will affect us, but there are things our leaders have been charged with taking care of that have a direct effect on us both as individuals and business owners,
she said. According to Schmidt, however, the 2016 campaign has overwhelmingly created a downturn in house sales and the general real estate market. “I don’t think I’ve seen an election affect the market as much as this one has. I think it’s going affect the market no matter who gets in, she said.

A One-of-A-Kind Festival of Abilities Held at OF Park
713-974-6920 Non-Medical In-Home Care For Seniors
For The Leader The Festival of Abilities at Oak Forest Park was the first inclusive event of its kind held in Oak Forest, Houston’s 3rd largest neighborhood. The Halloween-themed festival benefitted a landmark playground for all abilities in the area, to be located at Oak Forest Park, 2100 Judiway, 77018. Once funded, the playground will be the 7th accessible playground in the city’s park system. The Festival of Abilities, hosted by Friends of Oak Forest Park, the Leather Apron Foundation, and the Houston Parks Board, focused on providing activities that could be enjoyed by guests of all abilities. Highlights included wheelchair rugby and basketball scrimmages, as well as a Monster Dash obstacle course hosted by Houston Parks & Recreation Department’s Adaptive Sports & Recreation section, Arts Alive! “Halloween Happening expressive arts, a stroll ‘n roll costume parade, Bayou City Play’s “loose parts adventure play area, and The Mad Potter art tile fundraiser. The acclaimed Fly Dance Company performed an interactive hip hop show with an opening act by The River Performance Troupe, a TUTS- organization comprised of children with disabilities. In support for the project, Mayor Pro-Tem Cohen stated, “I commend the Friends of Oak Forest Park for the accessible playground initiative and their additional plans to beautify and improve facilities at the park. achieving these goals, I am proud to partner with them by allocating $20,000 from my FY2016 Council District Service Fund towards improving the tennis court at Oak Forest Park. Michelle Colvard was a driving force in implementing the Vale-Asche Foundation Playground Without Limits at Memorial Park, and has been a lifelong advocate for others with disabilities. During the Festival of Abilities, Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Cohen, guest of honor, proclaimed October 29,2016 as Oak Forest Park Day. Guest of honor Michelle Colvard, a former Ms. Wheelchair Texas and America stated that having spina bifida since childhood she always wanted to be a part of the fun other kids experienced on playgrounds but was not able to, due to the lack of accessible equipment.
With a playground for all abilities like the one planned for Oak Forest Park, she will have a place to take her daughter Anja. Colvard serves as the park’s ADA advisor. The Festival of Abilities raised approximately $54,000 towards the new accessible, inclusive playground. Some Help: HBA releases poll on judges Three weeks ago, Leader publisher Jonathan McElvy wrote a column about how difficult it is to find information about the judicial races on our Nov. 8 ballot. The Houston Bar Association, through a survey called the Judicial Preference Poll, asks attorneys in Houston to select judges in each race they deem worthy of their positions. Attorneys are only asked to select judges before whom they have appeared. The HBA does not endorse candidates, and the results of this survey do not serve as an endorsement. Rather, it is an educational piece for the public to see how Houston attorneys feel about the judges in each campaign. The numbers next to the candidates’ names indicate the number of attorneys who prefer that specific judge.

Ex-Schlumberger Employees Reunion. Kudos to Penny Robinson, our neighbor in Timbergrove, who has created a striking and unique calendar of images of the natural beauty she photographed throughout the Timbergrove neighborhood and wooded West 11th Street Park. Robinson said the calendar is “to span the seasons of a small ecosystem embedded inside Houston’s Loop 610.” Robinson embarked on a personal journey to take a photograph a day. After the first year, she enjoyed the photos and experience so much she decided to make it an annual thing; those photos are the source of the wonderful images which inspired her to create a calendar for 2017. 20% of the calendar’s proceeds will benefit A Second Cup, a non-profit coffee shop located in the Houston Heights, whose mission is to do their part to end human trafficking in our city. If you would like to know more
about the calendar, see Penny 4 His Thots Images at www.penny4histhots.com. Our phenomenal Oak Forest neighbor and metalwork artist Johnny Rojas has had another delightful art piece installed for all Houstonians to enjoy at 5353 Fannin Street in the Museum District. A work in stainless steel, his Stainless Steel Trees With Moving Birds was installed on either side of the entrance driveway to The Venue. The Sons of the American Legion will be hosting their 25th Annual Chili CookOff at the Post on Nov. 12th from Noon to 6:00 pm. Rumor has it that Outlaw Dave will have a cooking team at the cookoff! Mommy from P. 1B Crain’s husband helped her price her products appropriately after looking at the average cost of materials per month, as well as mailing and printing costs. Crain, who used to work for Shell Oil in IT Communications, has a knack for marketing. She reached out to Great Day Houston who had her on the show to talk about Masterful Mommy, and she’s also networked with the parents in the activities that she and Chloe do together. “We did sample packs for them,” she said. “People think that they will come up with the crafts on their own but it’s hard for people to find the time.” It’s easy for Crain to find testers for her activities. Her Ella Lee Forest neighborhood is full of children in the Masterful Mommy age range, and of course Chloe is excited when something comes in the “mail” for her. “She gets to be a guinea pig,” said Crain. “She likes most of them but had zero interest in a recent lacing activity I was trying out.” The first batch of kid ap-
proved products is being shipped to customers in two weeks, mostly in Houston, but a few to customers outside the city. Full service subscribers receive a package in the mail each month with either 8 or 12 crafts and activities individually packaged and fully prepared with all the supplies needed. Email service subscribers receive a PDF file of either 8 or 12 crafts and activities in their inbox each month along with a list of needed supplies. There’s also an option for a single bundles activity pack with either 12 or 15 activities. Crain is offering Leader readers 20 percent off the first month subscription by using the code LEADER during the month of November on the order page at https:// masterfulmommy.com/. She says one unexpected hurdle she’s encountered is that people say that they are “too busy” to do the activities and the crafts. “That’s why I started this,” said Crain. “To make it fast and easy to spend some quality time with your child.”
Care Center from P. 1B between I-10 and Washington. Representatives say the choice to add to Memorial Hermann’s family of convenient care centers and set down roots in the area is not just about bodily health, but a desire to add to the growing development. “It’s not just about the physical health of the community that we’re in, but the financial health as well and making sure to provide the access points and level of care under the umbrella of a health system that has a strong reputation in the community and is a strong value proposition for the residents of the Greater Heights,” Glover said.
“With this, they can just walk right in—you also have the option of going to the fullblown ER, or you can have one of the internist physicians look at you right there without a pre-made appointment,” Heins added. Glover added that the organization also remains in possession of some shell space in order to accommodate any initial future growth within the community. As of press time, the organization’s goal of a summer 2017 opening remains on track. For more information on the new Heights convenient care center, visit memorialhermann.org

Juliana Oyen, a sophomore at St. Pius X High School, organized a week-long book drive that accumulated nearly two tons of books to benefit schools and families in Baton Rouge, La. “The response of the student body at St. Pius X was overwhelming,” said Judith Oyen, mother of Juliana. “Every afternoon, Juliana had bags and boxes of books waiting in the lobby for her to pack in her car. Even Mrs. Larsen, principal of SPX, let us know that there were many books in the library to help Juliana’s cause.” Through Oyen’s connection with a school board member in Baton Rouge, she learned that many teachers and students lost everything in their classrooms and libraries after the severe flooding. Outreach had been tremendous in terms of food, clothing and furniture, but the schools were still lack-
ing books. She then decided to head up a project to assist the Baton Rouge schools and families. Oyen is a member of the American Heritage Girls Troop TX 2928. The mission of the organization is to build women of integrity through the service to God, family, community and country. Oyen is working towards her Dolley Madison Award, which includes organizing a community outreach project. A big reason she decided to hold the book drive at St. Pius X was because the school’s social ministry emphasizes the role of the human being within a larger community. The Office for Campus Ministry at SPX assisted Oyen, who chose a week in October to hold the book drive. To display the need for books, she made announcements and displayed posters throughout the school. The Office for Campus Ministry also put Oyen in
touch with St. Cecilia Catholic School. The school was holding a fundraiser fair which included an entire room of books for sale. St. Cecilia donated two carloads of remaining books at the end of the fair. Oyen also received many books from her community including neighbors, Catholic homeschool groups and the American Heritage Girls. Burrow Global, an engineering company based in Houston that does business in Louisiana, agreed to ship the books. As a result of Oyen’s extraordinary service, she has already received the Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award. The PVSA recognizes United States citizens who have achieved the required number of hours of service over a 12-month time period. In order to receive a bronze award, Oyen had to complete 50-74 hours of service. She is eight service hours shy of receiving the silver award.

Meet Essie. This 3 year old American Bully-mix loves nothing more than relaxing on the couch and being as close to her humans as possible. Essie is a whiz at potty training and loves being bathed and brushed. Essie obviously had a tough past-life (as evidenced by her scars) but she’s a sweet, happy girl without any signs of aggression. dog or by mentioning that you recently learned some new facts about dogs. You can remind your neighbor that dogs need a sturdy shelter. When the temperature drops below 45 degrees, straw (available at feed stores) must be placed inside doghouses in order to keep dogs warm. Blankets, clothing, and towels only make conditions worse when they get wet and freeze. If things go well, consider doing what you can to enhance the life of the dog: • Ask permission to take the dog for walks. • Offer some toys to the dog (with the owner’s approval). • Visit the dog regularly (but be careful not to become a nuisance; follow your instincts based on the guardian’s level of cooperation). Who knows--given a little time and conversation, you might convince your neighbor to spend some more time caring for their pet. Worst case, the neighbor might ask for

care for the animal. Every case will be different, so carefully assess the situation before you get started. It sounds like this dog’s very basic needs are (technically) being met and, unless he’s chained, there’s not much that animal control could do in this situation. Sadly, not everyone regards their pets as members of the family, as most of us do. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suggests that your best chance of helping dogs in non-emergency situations is likely to be befriending the dog’s guardians. Using anything other than a polite approach will probably make them angry and hurt your chances of making a difference. You may be pleasantly surprised—sometimes guardians help their animals themselves after just one conversation. Begin by talking to owners about what their dogs need. Avoid being confrontational. Consider starting the conversation by talking about your experiences with your own

The public is invited to attend the Oak Forest community’s annual “Uncorked” wine tasting festival this coming Saturday from 6:30-9 p.m. at Hope Episcopal Church. Attendees will sample a variety of wines, from reds and whites to blends, from both international and domestic vineyards, all while supporting the Oak Forest Neighborhood SEAL Security Program. Eureka Heights Brewery will also be pouring their top beers for those residents whose taste buds prefer the taste of hops. Oak Forest’s SEAL security program provides the neighborhood officers whose sole duty entails patrolling the streets in search of potential danger, and whose location is always provided to SEAL and the residents. Whether it be Oak Forest’s homebound elderly population depending on SEAL for the occasional welfare check or its younger generation who fights the downtown traffic to the office each day and leaves their home unattended, Oak Forest security chairperson Martha Meara said the peace of mind in knowing a live officer is patrolling the cannot be overestimated. “They just feel safe that there is someone else out there they can call and get help from,” she said.

Community garden provides slice of neighborhood heaven By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
For 20 years, Harris County Master Gardener Beth Galiano and her community have faithfully serviced the Garden Oaks-Shepherd Park Plaza garden on Alba Road, and this week The Leader decided to look at the story behind this small slice of the Garden Oaks community and what it has to offer. Begun by Jann Koenig and Bob Randall originally by the Garden Oaks school, the garden (now located one lot south of Chamboard Street on Alba) has grown 100 percent organic vegetables since its inception, which are in turn donated to local food pantries to help lowincome families and others in need. “It’s always been a community garden,” Galiano said. “We can eat all we want, but these crops here go out to the community.” While she may be Harris County’s master gardener now, when Galiano retired in 1985 and decided to lend Koenig a helping hand in maintaining the plot, she lacked any major gardening experience to draw on. “It was just a fun activity that I could do to get outside,” she said. Three months later, however, Koenig moved away — leaving a green gardener all by herself to keep up what he had begun and what the community had come to love. Not one for giving up, Galiano took a master gardening course at one of the area’s arboretums to hone the craft, thus seam-
lessly transitioning into the hobby with the help of a team of multiple faithful members of the community. She said at least 10 members graciously donate their time and efforts to beautify the garden and keep it producing each week; a byproduct of which was its designation as a feature stop on a recent Garden Oaks Home and Garden Tour. Aside from the desire to keep a community jewel going, Galiano said such an endeavor serves to pull gardening communities from around the area together, building a true sense of community in the process. “People like to garden, but they don’t always have a place to do it, and they’re just as welcome as the flowers in the garden,” Galiano said. “They can come over here and garden all they want to—I always try to make them welcome.” Garden Oaks’ little slice of organic heaven has remained untouched by the city’s rampant development due the land’s title being in flux, and Galiano said the community has truly embraced it and will do so as long as they are able. “They can’t get their fingers on it yet, but they might at some point,” she said as a laugh burst forth. “It might be wall to wall houses someday, but right now everybody, including those living along the garden, enjoy it.” “When we go to the food pantry, they’re so appreciative,” she added. “They can get stuff by the case, but when you bring something picked that morning, there’s something special about it.”
ANNIVERSARY EVENT Saturday, November 12, 2016 • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights • 1635 N. Loop W., Houston, TX 77008 Cake, entertainment, health screenings and more!
Celebrating half a century of advancing health in Greater Heights. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital invites you and your family to an equally fun-filled and health-focused event. Enjoy Dacapo’s cupcakes, take an epic picture with dinosaurs, dance along with our live DJ and more. Plus, take a look at how the healthcare landscape has changed over the last 50 years, meet affiliated community physicians and sign up for free health screenings. We look forward to seeing you there!
Neighbors, As a candidate for Harris County District Attorney, and your neighbor in Sunset Heights, I want your vote on Election Day. I have a simple plan for making our neighborhoods safer. In the last year and a half, the residents of the Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and other North Houston neighborhoods have suffered through 7,702 home burglaries and 3980 robberies at a cost of more than $21 Million. My family was among the victims. Was yours? Right now, more than 4,500 pieces of DNA evidence collected from unsolved home burglaries are sitting on laboratory shelves untested! My plan is to use criminal forfeiture monies already in possession of the District Attorney to test the DNA evidence now. My opponent has refused to use forfeited criminal monies to test the evidence from our burglaries and robberies, stating she’d rather use those funds to buy office supplies and bottled water. I say Houstonians deserve better. As a lawyer of nearly 30 years, the former Director of Crime Stoppers and Houston’s first Anti-Gang Director, I know the collection and testing of DNA evidence is the way to stop our neighborhood crime epidemic. When we catch one, we can catch more. With your vote, together we can make our families and homes safe again. Safer together,

Photo by Jonathan Valadez St. Pius X. players go one-one-one during last week’s practice. The team is looking to improve upon a third-place district finish last season, with an experienced roster returning.
SPX basketball matures, reloads with transfers By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Coming off of a season that had its fair share of ups and downs, the St. Pius X boys’ basketball team is already back on the court and eager to start chasing bigger goals this year. “Third place last year was pretty good for the group that we had, but I think we upgraded, and everybody is a little more mature,” said head coach Brandon Scott. “So now we’re looking to win district.” The Panthers finished 5-3 in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 6A District 3 standings, losing twice to first-place St. Thomas High and once to second-place Concordia Lutheran High. St. Thomas and Concordia both took hits to their rosters due to graduation, and although both schools are deep with talent, the race for district should be wide open. SPX, on the other hand, only lost two players to graduation and return their dynamic senior backcourt duo of Cody Graham and Matthew Strange. “Our guard players are truly are strong suit,” Scott said. “We’ve got really good guards, and they’re leaders.” Graham is a speedy guard who can drive to the basket while going up strong and getting the foul call. He is also the go-to guy, according to Scott. Strange is a shooter who can shoot from deep and help stretch defenses with his outside-shooting ability. He is a top-35 Houstonarea player, according to RCS Sports, and the
93rd-ranked player in Texas, according to Rivals.com. The Panthers added even more depth to their backcourt with the addition of Lamar High School-transfer Markus Vallien, who is a 5-foot-10 senior. He is a top-20 Houston-area prospect, according to RCS Sports, and is the 82nd-ranked player in the state, according to Rivals.com. The team also gets deeper at the forward position with the addition of Eisenhower High School-transfer Markeith Williams. “He came in last year, but he missed the deadline, so he had to play (junior varsity),” Scott said. “Markieth is a real good leader as a junior. He’s very vocal and he does things right. He’s always on time, works hard and always wants to learn more.” In the first month or so of the season, the Panthers will lack size at the forward and center positions until the football team finishes their season, which could end as early as the end of November or last until mid-December. Once football is over, Scott said that 6-6 sophomore Grant Gunnell will join the team and another 6-6 player, senior Dylan Johnson, has reached out to him about playing this season as well. While they wait for their late-season additions, the Panthers have been focusing on defense and building chemistry as a team. “If we can get stops, we’ll be alright,” Scott said. “If you can enjoy getting stops more than you enjoy getting buckets, that’ll take you a little further than the other guys.”

ver the last 12 months, the two inescapable names constantly drowning the airwaves (radio and TV), being pounded, cajoled, and sold to you is Trump and Clinton. Come Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8 I would hope the nightmare ends, however, as we all know, Freddy Krugger lives and so does Jason Voorhies! Unfortunately, so will chatters of emails, construction of walls, and Russian hackers. On a brighter note, Wednesday, Nov. 9 the one name that can relieve you from the vitriol of the last year is Slade Ham. An established veteran of the comedy scene, whose career spans almost two decades, will be performing at the American Legion Post 560 - right across the street from Liberty Kitchen Garden Oaks, look for the fighter jet, you can’t miss it. Slade, a self-proclaimed nerd, think Star Trek, TNG, BattleStar Gallactica and all things Star Wars will keep you laughing with his wit, playful insight, and stories of world travels. Slade’s achievements list is so long, it makes the great wall of China look like a fence, a huge fence, a beautiful fence to some. Slade performs over 200+ shows a year, nationwide, including performing for our troops in twenty-two countries; this modern day bard will keep you wanting more. A season headliner across the United States, Slade has featured for the likes of Ralphie May, Christopher Titus, and more. As a founding member of the Whiskey Brothers podcast (with over 25,000 subscribers) Slade’s trailblazing spirit lights the path for the Houston Comedy Scene. This is one performance you don’t want to miss. The Feature Act is JB Nader, an Army Veteran of 10 years and former professional MMA fighter. JB, a husband and father in a mixed race family, draws from his experiences of living in a multicultural home. Nader uses his insecurity with his dad-bod and receding hairline to poke fun at others. While honing his crafts around Houston clubs such as the Joke Joint, Rudyards, Boondocks and the Improv, he will lay it all on the line for you Nov. 9 at the American Legion Post 560. Ticket purchase is highly recommended if you are attending with a group of friends. Twenty dollars gets you two drinks, dinner and admission to the show. Tickets can be purchased on our Facebook page, Greater Heights Comedy Night, just click the “Shop Now” Button. Come celebrate with us as this is a special show, pre-celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday (Happy Birthday to all the Devil Dogs out there), funk music will be provided by DJ Shaun Taylor and catering will be provided by Hartz Krispy Chicken on Pinemont. Lastly, we would like to thank our sponsors, Yellow Cab, JG Construction, and Send Out Cards. Your gift to us is what makes this show possible, as this is a fundraiser for the Veterans at Post 560. I do encourage our neighbors to do business with our sponsors as generosity is what helps us move forward. Come hungry and ready to laugh.
