Third Age Learning runs model senior program By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader About 18 years ago, the Third Age Learning Center, or TALC, was launched in the Houston Heights and has grown into a model program for improving the quality, productivity and joy in the lives of aging adults. The TALC provides local senior citizens with an extensive selection of interesting classroom instruction, new friends, and a fresh, hot lunch Monday through Friday in the spring and fall. About 330 seniors enroll each semester, enriching their lives. Located in the cavernous Parish Hall at All Saints Catholic Church, the space would seem too large for the TALC. Not so. About 50 or 60 seniors regularly fill the hall for lunch; sometimes the seniors even perform on the room’s stage. Line dancing demonstrations, plays, ukulele bands and an occasional Elvis impersonator are examples of just a few. Classes start at about 9 a.m., and culminate with lunch at noon. The students are not

required to be Catholic to join. These lively, interesting, caring men and woman are not required to be anything other than adults age 55 or older who are hungry for learning and fun. The TALC is an allvolunteer effort. Membership costs $7 dollars a year. With about 40 local citizens donating their time each day, all the teachers are volunteers and most of the classes are $5 a semester. Instruction includes subjects such as Texas Hold ‘em, quilting, Ti Chi, and Computer 101. The hot lunch - including a main course, sides, a dessert and beverage - are available for an exceedingly nominal fee. As an independent nonprofit agency separate from All Saints Catholic Church, the TALC operates due to grants its board of trustees seek annually. The partnership with the church has proven to be a happy one for both organizations. The center reimburses the church for the use of the hall, and the food costs are the responsibility of the center. Carolyn Kares has been a

volunteer with TALC for years and finds the work enormously rewarding. This vital woman has forged many friendships and memories over her time. “It is a joy and an honor to participate, and to see our seniors happy,” she stated. Liz Lester is serving her second term as President of the board for the TALC, and has been with the agency for 15 years. This active, naturalborn leader is herself a senior and will celebrate her 85th birthday this week. She thrives as a member of TSLC and it shows: she could pass for 60. “The learning center is a tremendous program,” Lester said. “Our students are people who might not eat well at home, and would be isolated without the center. Here, our students make friends and learn new things, enriching their lives.” Jo’ Kelley is a member of All Saints Catholic Church and also served as President of the TALC four different time over her years with the agency. Republic Arms to re-open soon public by the end of the year.. Owner Art May said the company sustained heavy damage to our local shop, as well as several warehouses and another office that bore their attention, but reiterated that he indeed has plans to reopen as soon as time will allow. Though a specific target date remains up in the air, he hopes that time will be by December if all goes according to plan. “We’ve had some issues that have forced us to push back a re-opening date, but we should be back here within the next 30 days –probably sooner,” he said. “We’re making progress

Even an internet search marked the shop permanently closer; however, it should be re-opened to the

Heights Mercantile near capacity By Betsy Denson For The Leader Heights Mercantile, a development by Radom Capital LLC at 7th and Yale, is 99 percent leased according to Steve Radom, who also notes that they have their final space out for signature. Chubbies, the lifestyle apparel brand based in California that focuses on swimwear, shorts and casual clothing, was the first open tenant prior to the Fourth of July. They have been joined by Saint Lo Boutique, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Bespoke, Marine Layer, Will Leather Goods, Define, Melange Creperie and Lululemon. Three recent arrivals are Warby Parker, The Impeccable Pig and Q Clothier/Rye 51. Warby Parker Warby Parker Heights opened in early October. The custom eyewear business has

locations in 23 states and one in Canada. For seven years, Houstonians could buy eyewear online from Warby Parker, but Heights Mercantile is their first Houston storefront. “We’ve been looking for the perfect spot to set up shop in the city for a long time,” wrote CEO Dave Gilboa in a press release. The Heights location looks like a classic library. As an homage to their spot by the bike trail, and to encourage walk-ins, they’ve installed a glasses shaped bike rack outside their door. If you can’t decide on glasses while you are in the store, an advisor will send you a digital overview of the frames you tried on during your visit. The Impeccable Pig The Impeccable Pig started in Dallas as a home decor shop, but shifted toward apparel in 2005. There are 20 locations of

the store in the southeastern United States with one existing Houston storefront in Rice Village. The Heights Mercantile location has been open a month. Cameron Van Patten describes the clothes as those appropriate for an “everyday girl that are also super affordable.” She says the highest price item would be a dress for $80. “Owners Laura Robbins and Jennifer Correa are a mother daughter team,” said Van Patten. “Jennifer is a mom of two so she looks for things that would suit a range of ages, from middle school girls to their moms.” Q Clothier/Rye 51 Sales associate Jordan West explains that the store has a dual focus. Q Clothier offers custom men’s suits and Rye 51 is their ready to wear branch that offers a range of men’s business and casual clothing. The Heights Mercantile

location is the second one in Houston. There is also a store at Kirby and Westheimer. West says they’ve been open for seven weeks and are getting good traffic from the hike and bike trail. “People will run by and see us and then come back by later,” said West. He says customers range from 20 to 80 years of age. The market for custom suits tend to be older professionals in the legal or real estate realm while younger patrons might come in for a blazer and jeans to get ready for the weekend. A custom suit takes 4 to 6 weeks to make. “For custom jobs, we have a customer’s measurements so women can come in and shop for them,” he said. Remaining Heights Mercantile tenants Local Foods will open in late November, Paloma Beauty will open late December and Postino Wine Café will open in early 2018.

Flood Damaged Nundini to reopen in mid-December

Restaurateur Giampaolo Nundini has been affected by floods before. The original location of his food importing business was on Allen Parkway until 2001’s Tropical Storm Allison swept into town. At that time his store and restaurant were relocated to 500 North Shepherd Drive. This time it was Hurricane Harvey that necessitated a close and remodel. Nundini is shooting for a mid-December reopening. If you have something for Business Briefs, please e-mail betsy@theleadernews.com

Third Age from P. 1B has seen it grow exponentially. Kelley will not take credit for the success of the program, but she clearly deserves much of it. “The element I most cherish is the support, care and friendship we all enjoy here,” Kelley explained. “For many of us, our families live elsewhere, and life would be a very different without the center. The classes are remarkable and lots of fun, but the happy, healthy, vital spirit of our members is what always amazes me.”

And what about the name? What does “third age” mean? “We believe that the first age in a person’s life is for ‘learning,’ the second age is for ‘earning’ and the third age is for ‘returning’,” Kelley explained. “The third age is for giving it all back,” she concluded with a smile. Do you know someone who would thrive in the TALC? Enrollment for the spring semester will start in late January. For more information, call Ms. Liz Lester at 713-862-5444.

By Mike Tenney For The Leader Next Friday night, Nov. 10, St. Pius X High School will rename its football stadium after its most famous alumni player – former Texas A & M player and Denver Bronco quarterback/head coach Gary Kubiak. The facility,, will officially be renamed Kubiak Stadium, in honor of the 1979 St. Pius X graduate and former Houston Texans coach, who during his four years on the field at the north end of Shepherd Dr., set all kinds of high school passing records. A presentation to unveil the Stadium’s new name will be held before the start of the Panthers-St. Thomas game. Kubiak will also have his number 9 jersey retired. It will actually be the second time in school history that the number 9 has been retired. It was originally retired in the late 60s after former player Gene Walkoviak, a 1966 St. Pius X graduate, wore the number during his standout career. But when Walkoviak heard a few years later that Kubiak as a teenager might be coming to play at the school and wanted to wear the number nine, Walkoviak agreed to it saying, “Gary is a good kid,” according to St. Pius X communications director Khadijah Ray. The Kubiak Stadium ceremony will take place after a private gathering is held for Kubiak and his wife Rhonda, who is also a 1979 St. Pius X graduate. “We are humbled by the honor bestowed upon us by the St. Pius X community,” the Kubiaks shared in a statement when presented with the idea. Ray said the planning for this honor began over a year ago when members of the St. Pius X family approached Rhonda with the idea of renaming the stadium and she said she would speak with Gary about it. A short time later, she came back to them and said Coach Kubiak was humbled but appreciative and all in if that was what the school wanted to do. Gary Kubiak was a four-year

All-District, All-State, and AllAmerican quarterback from 1975 to 1978 and he led the Panthers to three consecutive private school state championships. When he finished his high school career before going on to play at Texas A & M, he owned the then-state record of 6,190 career passing yards. In 1999, Kubiak became the first member of a private school to be inducted in the Texas High School Hall of Fame. He was an eight-round draft choice in 1983 by the Denver Broncos and a backup quarterback to Hall of Famer John Elway from that time until he retired as a player in 1991. He was the head coach of the Houston Texans in 2006 until late in the 2013 season. He then became the head coach in Denver in 2015 and the Broncos won the 50th Super Bowl in 2016 when they defeated the Carolina Panthers, 24-10. After that game, Kubiak retired from coaching citing health reasons. He is presently a senior personnel director for the Broncos. “Gary is truly an inspiration to our players and to our entire St. Pius X family,” Ray said. “I think it sends the message to all our students that once you leave St. Pius, you’re never forgotten. And it shows the type of success that our students and our graduates can and do achieve. We’re very proud of Gary and Rhonda and everything they stand for. Both on and field and off the field, we’re very proud of the Kubiaks and we’re thrilled to able to hold this presentation and name the stadium after him.” The presentation for Kubiak will begin around 6:30 p.m.

SPX, St. Thomas on crash course for district By Mike Tenney For The Leader St. Thomas and St. Pius X both moved to the top of the TAPPS Division 1, District 3-5A football standings last weekend with hard-fought victories to kick off their league schedules. And if each team can win this week, they will set up what should be a memorable match-up next Friday evening as they play for a district championship. St. Thomas The Eagles will look to extend their win streak to four games and, more importantly, go to 2-0 in the district Friday night when they host previously-unbeaten Tomball Concordia Lutheran at Granger Stadium. They kicked off league play last Friday with a not-as-close-as-it-looks 41-22 win over Beaumont Kelly. The Eagles went up 41-0 early in the third period before Kelly scored three touchdowns against the reserves with a running-clock for most of the final two periods. Junior quarterback Peyton Motocha threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more in the Eagles’ win over Kelly and he and rest of the offense really seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time. After a fumble on their first offensive play of the night, the Eagles scored on their next six offensive possessions to make the game onesided pretty quickly. The win also got them back to .500 at 3-3 for the first time this season under new head coach Rick McGuire. St. Pius The Panthers continues to pour on the points and Concordia Lutheran was the latest to see it up-close when the orange-and-white amassed over 550 yards in offense to beat

the Crusaders, 53-42, and get the district schedule started just the way they had hoped. Florida State commitment/ junior wide receiver Jalen Curry caught a state record 26 passes for 242 yards and two scores. Because of his historic night, Currie is now up for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week. Now the Panthers and Curry will look to keep the excitement building and get their second consecutive league win Friday night when they return home to face Beaumont Kelly. With a win, the Panthers would clinch at least a share of the district title with only St. Thomas left on the schedule. Waltrip The Rams will look to put the cap on an unbeaten season and a perfect District 24-5A championship 7 p.m. Thursday night when they host winlessHouston Wisdom, formerly known as Lee High School, at Delmar Stadium. Waltrip made it seven in a row this fall with a 56-6 triumph over Northside last Thursday and after they play Wisdom, will have two weeks to prepare for their opening-round playoff game. Quarterback Cameron Howe and the offense continue to hum along, but the defense continues to keep its HISD opposition out of the end zone, having given up just 54 points this season. If they can keep up that pace, they might be able to make a Region III playoff run, starting with a win over the fourth-place team out of District 23-5A in a little more than two weeks. Going into this next-to-last-week of the regular season, exactly who that team might be is still unknown as Texas City, Galveston Ball and Santa Fe are all 3-2 in the 23-5A and tied for third place behind unbeaten Manvel and second-place Fort Bend Marshall.

The Houston Fire Department put out a fire in a detached garage on 21st Street in the Heights on Monday. Investigators have called the fire ‘incendiary,’ which means it was deliberately set, but it wasn’t necessarily arson. (Photo by Christina Martinez)

HFD investigates suspicious blaze The Houston Fire Department is investigating a fire earlier this week in the Heights, and they believe the fire was started deliberately. Around 12:40 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, HFD received a call that a garage apartment was on fire at 241 21st St. Upon arriving at the scene, District Chief David Swanson said all people were accounted for and there weren’t any casualties from the flame. On Tuesday, HFD released a statement that said damages from the blaze totaled more

than $50,000. HFD arson investigators said the blaze had been ruled “incendiary.” The difference between “arson” and “incendiary” is intent, according to the National Wildlife Coordinating Group, which helps manage fires across the United States. Instead, an incendiary fire is “deliberately ignited under circumstances in which the person knows that the fire should not be ignited.” It does not meet the legal definition of arson. “Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy fire com-

ing from a detached garage apartment,” said a release from HFD. “While working to extinguish the garage fire, firefighters protected a nearby structure. The fire was declared under control within about 15 minutes.” News of suspicious fires have haunted the Heights area in the past. In August 2009, 18 suspicious fires determined to be arsons, were reported in the Heights. Only one man was arrested for those fires, and he was only charged in one case.

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Oak Forest Park has long been a favorite of local children; and in the coming years it will be even more of a haven once it welcomes the Playground for all Abilities, which is inching ever-closer to its funding goal. This past Saturday, Oct. 28, the Friends of Oak Forest Park hosted their second annual Festival of Abilities, a fundraiser for the inclusive playground. Plans include wheelchair accessible, sensory-rich equipment, an engraved paver pathway, picnic tables and benches, and a painted art tile installation. Included among the new amenities surrounding the play area will be the Swayze commemorative bench, honoring the beloved local family, and the legacy of Patsy Swayze’s School of Dance. Friends of Oak Forest Park Chair Elyssa Horvath, who helped spearhead efforts for the grassroots project launched in 2016, said the group had raised about $315,000 towards a goal of just over $500,000 for the endeavor as of press time. Horvath noted the project would not be possible without assistance, which has abounded in many forms, from community donations to investments from the highest levels of city government. “This is amazing,” she exclaimed as hundreds gathered at 2100 Judiway St. throughout a blustery Saturday afternoon. “It’s been so special to be involved in this project. This is the first time a grassroots group has taken charge of funding an accessible playground in the city’s park sys-

tem and the support has been incredible.” Additionally, Sprouts just selected the cause as one of four Texas recipients from among 300 national applications for a $10,000 grant. A small private trust chose the cause as a top priority for a $50,000 award. “Sprouts is proud to partner with organizations that share our mission to inspire, educate and empower every person to live a healthier life,” said Lyndsey Waugh, executive director of the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department has also approved $10,000 towards construction of the future playground, which will be built once funding is complete. The Playground for All Abilities will be the first inclusive public playground of its kind in the central northwest Houston communities, and the sev-

enth accessible playground in the city’s park system. Upon completion, Friends of Oak Forest Park will collaborate with the Houston Parks Board, the city’s non-profit park advocacy organization serving as the project’s fiscal agent, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to develop a plan of action as soon as funding is complete. The community can visit the park’s pool building wall facing the existing playground to see the landscape concept plans developed by M2L Associates. “No matter what their ability, I have always believed parks are the great equalizer – they’re a place for everybody to come enjoy, smile and laugh, and just become a part of one big family,” Houston Parks and Recreation Director Steven T. Wright said. “What a great way this is to lift Houston up. “
