Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Opens Amputation Prevention Center® Diabetes affects an estimated 560,000 residents of Greater Houston including a high concentration living in Greater Heights. Studies indicate that, without action, these numbers will rise to more than 1.1 million by 2040. To help patients manage their diabetes, especially non-healing wounds, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital has worked with Amputation Prevention Centers of America® to develop a highly specialized wound care program and dedicated treatment center committed to preventing lower limb loss. Common complications of diabetes are foot and leg ulcers, or open sores, which do not heal and eventually lead to amputation. The World Health Organization estimates that 85 percent of amputations are preventable. Specialized Team and Advanced Therapies Help Preserve Limbs The Amputation Prevention Center® at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights provides both inpatient and outpatient care by a highly specialized team of affiliated physicians and surgeons dedicated to limb preservation. Using traditional therapies in conjunction with advanced therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), negative pressure wound therapy and bioengineered skin substitutes, these specialists aggressively treat problem wounds to promote healing and improve circulation in preserving limbs. HBOT stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and helps white blood cells kill bacteria, thereby improving the body’s natural healing process. It is used in addition to standard wound care. Nega-

Defining the holiday season is a good place to start. Dietitians agree that the season begins with Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then various faith-based celebrations including Christmas, and generally concludes on New Year’s Day. With three straight months of temptation, it’s little wonder that many Americans will gain weight, and several local experts had some tips to help us enjoy the holidays, and maintain a healthy weight at the same time. Natalia Uribe, RDN, LD, and Clinical Dietitian I with the Harris
Health System (which operates 48 clinics, health centers, specialty treatment centers, and hospitals in Harris County including four in The Leader’s area) says that there are effective tricks we can use to keep extra pounds at bay. “First, consider having minimeals during the holidays,” Uribe stated. “Our meals are usually large and buffet-style. Instead of one big meal, spread it into smaller ones. Start by filling your plate with vegetables and salad before going to the entrees. Eating salad first may help you consume fewer calories. And remember to savor every bite, then wait 10 minutes to see if you really need a second helping.” According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly 10 percent of the American population has diabetes and 36 percent are obese. Many families have members who are not only trying to manage their weight, but the disease. There are good solutions to the challenge of
holistically – what you do outside of the gym is just as important as what you do inside.” Community outreach has been a major part of the couple’s focus. “We want to be engaged in the community and create a culture of community within our studio,” said Markos. “We’ve partnered with The Houston Wellness Project to lead stretching before their free monthly 5k and to host a Park Walk Series.”

Boutique fitness, or personalized fitness studios, now make up more than 20 percent of the market, according to a recent Health Club Consumer Report. A local addition to the mix is My House Fitness, 1507-A W. 18th St., one of 16 My House Fitness locations currently open in the U.S., including three others in Texas. Lyndsey Markos said that she and her husband Chris visited a My House Fitness location in Florida and immediately connected with the concept. “It was more than about just being a number at the gym,” she said. “It is about approaching fitness in a fun, holistic way that motivates people to make a lifestyle change.” Chris Markos commissioned into the Army after college at Texas A&M and served for seven years, including two deployments to Iraq. “Much of his passion for fitness came from his time in the Army,” said Lyndsey. “I grew up playing sports and in an athletic family, so fitness has always come somewhat natural to me. Working out has always been important to us and something we enjoy doing together, but as we have gotten older and battled through various injuries, and had a baby, we have come to realize that being fit is much more than working out.” Markos says they are a by appointment only small studio. At only 1,500 square feet, the studio is meant to be non-intimidating. It’s not packed with machines or other large equipment either; Markos says they believe in functional movement and utilize a lot of body-weight exercises in addition to free-weights, kettlebells, TRX and medicine balls. Clients purchase monthly training packages or class packages. There

What are Superfoods? Catherine Kruppa, MS, RD, CSSD, LD catherinekruppa@adviceforeating.com
As a registered dietitian, people ask me daily what superfoods they should include in their diet to help them prevent disease and increase their energy. The term superfood is a marketing term used to describe foods with supposed health benefits; however, it is not used widely by dietitians. There is little scientific evidence to support the term superfoods. Registered dietitians prefer to focus on nutrient dense foods that provide energy and prevent disease. Below are my favorite 6 foods to include in your diet on a regular basis to help you live your healthiest life. 1. Cherries Anthocyanins contained in cherries help muscles use sugar for energy as well as recovery from exercise. A substantial and growing body of scientific research has linked tart cherries to anti-inflammatory benefits, reduced pain from gout and arthritis and an extensive list of heart health benefits. 2. Kale This green leafy vegetable has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years. This antioxidant-packed green is a great way to help regulate your body’s inflammation, which will help prevent muscle cramps and soreness. Kale contains high levels of vitamin A, K, B6, calcium and iron, which is all important for overall health. The antioxidants in kale may also prevent lung and stomach cancers. Kale’s high fiber content makes is a great side dish at dinner, an excellent addition to a smoothie or a snack. For a savory snack try curried kale
chips. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine 2½ cups roughly torn kale, 1½ tsp olive oil, 1/4 tsp curry powder and a pinch of salt. Arrange kale in a single layer on a cookie sheet; bake until crisp and lightly browned on edges, 12-15 minutes. 3. Banana The unique mix of vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates in bananas has made them a favorite fruit for years. Their easy portability, low expense, and great taste also help support their popularity. Bananas are “prepackagedâ€? in 100 calories packs by nature, which make them a great snack. They also contain quick fuel and are chalked full of potassium, 420 mg per banana. I find that most of my clients are not meeting their potassium requirements. Low blood potassium can cause weak muscles, abnormal heart rhythms, and a raise in blood pressure. Start your day with a banana or having one as a quick snack is a great way to get a potassium boost. 4. Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes are also a star food because of the potassium and antioxidants they contain. Our bodies are under an enormous amount of stress daily. This causes a surge in free radicals that
decompose muscle. Antioxidants, like the ones found in sweet potatoes, neutralize these free radicals and help prevent cancer. Potassium is also important in counteracting the affects of acid producing foods that speed the loss of muscle. Sweet potatoes are a great side dish and, like kale, you can make your own chips. 5. Fish Varieties like salmon, tuna, halibut, rainbow trout, and canned sardines are brimming with omega-3 fatty acids. Muscles need the amino acids provided by fish as building blocks to repair and create thousands of tissues. As we age, keeping a good ratio of muscle mass can be more of a challenge. Eating enough protein is essential in offsetting the breakdown that occurs. Moreover, eating fish is shown to slow muscle breakdown. Could a piece of fish replace the beef on your plate tonight? 6. Beets Underrated and under-appreciated, this vegetable is very powerful. Beets are rich in antioxidants like folate, vitamin C, copper and manganese and a class of plant chemicals called betalins. Nitrates contained in beets allow blood vessels to dilate, increasing the flow of oxygen to your muscles. Science has also shown that nitrates improve the efficiency of the mitochondria in our cells. This means our muscles need less oxygen to function. Include these foods in your diet weekly to best fuel your body. They also provide many antioxidants to help you live the healthiest life that you can. Think of food as your virtual health insurance policy.

Butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots are great seasonal options. For people with hypertension or heart disease, the excess salt found in holiday meals presents a danger; sodium aggravates both diseases. “To cut back on salt, look for low-sodium products, stated Sacco. “Also try using fresh herbs and spices such as rosemary, thyme, nutmeg and sage to add flavor and

Neighbors: The Saldivars celebrate 50th wedding anniversary By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com Family and friends send happy anniversary wishes to Jimmye and Joe Saldivar of Oak Forest as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary! From daughter Kelly, “Happy 50th wedding anniversary to the best parents in the world. They are a wonderful example of what a loving couple should be and they love each other more today than on the day they married. We love you mucho mom and dad!” The Saldivars were married at her parents’ house after they met at a party where Jimmye saw Joe’s physique first and then his handsome face, and she remarked he looked just as good coming as he did going! The couple both enjoy gardening; Joe loves hunting and fishing; and Jimmye is very involved with her church as well as volunteer work at her grandson’s elementary school. The couple celebrated their special day by going to Perry’s Steakhouse with Kelly for lunch and then everyone enjoyed a festive family dinner at Mi Sombrero later that evening. Daughters Kelly Saldivar (Roy Campbell), Jennifer Salinas (Jose Salinas). Grandchildren are Jackie Salinas, Jacob Salinas and Johnny Salinas. Great grandson is Danny Villalpando. ing colorful seasonal plants and decorations, as well. One of our Timbergrove Manor neighbors, Allison Riordan, was minding her own sweet business and entertaining guests when one guest excused himself to visit the loo. He was completely shocked to find a small hognose snake wedged in between the mirror and the vanity. Riordan’s neighbor, Holly McDonald, was promptly called to the rescue, captured the little nonvenomous fellow, and released it in West 11th Street Park. What a great neighbor! Riordan pointed out that her dog, a breed that is known for tracking, pointing and retrieving, scored a perfect score in his natural ability test, and went to a snake breaking clinic, had absolutely no idea the snake was there. Riordan reports she had a long talk with her dog that evening. You never know who you’ll run into in Leader country! Our neighbors in Pinemont Park, Carissa and Hans Barcus, along with their children Caitlyn and Jimmy, were in the Heights walking their dog and enjoying Houston’s gorgeous fall weather. The family visited Revival Market on
Heights Blvd. afterwards and ran into none other than Scott McClellan, President of H-EB’s Houston and Central Market Division. McClellan was happy to visit with them and seemed excited about HEB’s future here. Barcus exclaimed, “You’re the H-E-B guy!” and McClellan said, “Yes!” After hearing where the Barcus family lives and shops, McClellan’s eyes lit up and he said, “Your H-E-B is coming soon!” Beautiful words, those are! What a nice surprise for this young educator! Durham Elementary School’s Principal Amy Poersche and Nell Baham, president of Delta Upsilon, Area III, recently devised a plan to surprise Veronica Blanco, a first grade teacher at Durham Elementary. The pair planned for Blanco’s mother, Nelda Blanco, and Blanco’s teammates to be present to congratulate her, too. Baham began by asking Blanco’s class if they had ever won an award. The students said they had and that their teacher, Ms. Blanco, gave them lots of awards for good work. After several clever responses, she asked the children three questions: 1) if their teacher was young, 2) an educator, and 3) whether she deserved an award. A resounding YES! was their reply. Then the moment came when a totally surprised Blanco heard that she was the recipient of the Young Educator Award from Delta Upsilon Chapter. The check Blanco received will be used for supplies for her class. Delta Upsilon plans to extend this award monthly, instead of once a year.

Are senior pets trainable?
Dear Tabby, We’re interested in adopting a senior pet soon, but are concerned about bringing an animal into our home who might have long-held bad manners that can’t be reversed (due to old age). What do you think...are senior dogs trainable? Skeptical of senior pets in Shady Grove Dear Skeptical, In case you didn’t know, November is Adopt A Senior Pet month, so in shelters across the area, you’re likely to get a great deal on a slightly older pet. These pets all come fully-vetted and spayed or neutered with a clean bill of health. Also you’re in luck because the old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” just doesn’t hold water with most dogs. In fact, there are even some basic commands that you can teach your older dog at home that will greatly help him to interact more
Pet of the Week
favorably at home as well as out and about. “The first few commands are usually basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, walking on leash, and most importantly, to come when called,” said Elizabeth Bachle, a technician at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences pharmacy and an agility instructor at Puppy Love training. “These are a great foundation to training more complex behaviors and can keep your pet out of harm’s way.” “Training your dog not only rewards good behaviors, but can also prevent unwanted behaviors before they begin,” said Bachle. “I would highly encourage new puppy owners to attend a group class to socialize and create a strong foundation of learning, but dogs of all ages benefit from a new challenge.” During training, it is important to use positive reinforcements
when they’re showing progress. Rather than punishing your old dog for all the things you don’t want him to do, concentrate on teaching him what you do want him to do. When your dog does something good, convince him to do it again by rewarding him with a treat or a nice, long tummy scratch. “One of the most important decisions you can make for your dog is the training method you decide to use at home or in group classes. There are many methods out there but I highly encourage the use of positive reinforcement techniques, such as clicker training, and discourage the use of punishment when training any dog,” said Bachle. “Punishment can have a lot of negative effects, including fear, aggression, or distrust, while reinforcement is effective, builds confidence, and makes training fun for you and your dog!” If you’ve tried training your dog

one-on-one at home but seem to be getting nowhere, training classes can be a great alternative. Providing him with the opportunity to interact with other dogs and their owners in group classes can be a great way to socialize and expose your dog to new situations and distractions in a safe environment. Most importantly, remember to be patient. Like children, dogs have short attention spans and learn at all different paces. If done with patience and persistence, training your pooch--no matter what his age--can be an enjoyable bonding experience for you both. Did you know? During the month of November, all black cats AND orange cats are only $11 at Friends For Life? Give these kitties something to be thankful for this autumn, by adopting one (or two) today! Go to: www.friends4life.org for more info. Do you have a question for Tabby? If so, email her at deartabbyquestions@gmail.com.
Customer satisfaction has been my greatest reward for over 25 years.

Vacationing in the Heights Recently, I was accused of living my life as if I were on vacation; I’d like to say on record that this statement is true. That is why I write here and tell you about all the cool things going on in these fabulous neighborhoods that I simply call “The Heights.” What qualifies as being on vacation here, I wonder? So here’s a recap of the past few days and you can decide for yourself. Or better, tell me where else I can go celebrate. A few weeks ago, on my evening walk, I turned down a new street and just a few houses in I hear my name being called from inside a cute bungalow. I’m hesitant, but stop and for the next hour I’m talking art, sipping home crafted beer on tap and enjoying this totally decked out house for Halloween. I got to tour the new storefront and work space by my friend Maura Cannon. Cannon is an antiques dealer, and has great taste; she is my definition of Paris Flea. Her “public face,” The Homestretch, is inside Stardust Antiques, 1129 East 11th St. Her newly renovated warehouse showroom features a lighting showroom. Get information on both from her website: thehomestretchhouston.com. I liked this one. A text message on Sunday from Laura Basurto, owner of the The Pupusa Bar, (Salvadoran), alerted me to an impromptu birthday celebration for her Mom the next day. Michaeline Yanascavage is owner of Michaeline’s Fresh Foods, a catering company, and also Kitchen205, a commercial kitchen. This is where companies that make any type of food, fresh or packaged, can rent the certified kitchen and facilities to make their creations. You didn’t think all those chef driven food trucks prepped at home did you? On the menu: tostadas. That’s what I’m talking about! I really wanted to see this space I’m fascinated by shared spaces. If you’ve ever peeked inside a restaurant kitchen, then you know what I saw, only bigger, much bigger. One better, I got to meet some of the creatives that work there. Sitting across from me was Lucienne, here only a few months from France, and a recent graduate of a school in Italy that teaches the craft of making ice cream. That is no easy course, I assure you. Lucienne plans to sell only commercially, but may open a push cart shop too. I received a tour of her laboratory, too; it felt like one, cold with mysterious look-

ing machinery … I loved it. She assures me I get to taste samples soon, I’ll get back to you on details. Sitting to my left was Ashley of AshleyCakesHouston.com. And though the tostadas were delicious, Ashley’s delicate mini cupcakes were divine. This may be the only time I’ve witnessed women get second and third helpings of dessert. If you’re in the market for a kitchen, or just a tour junky like me, here’s a sneak a peek online: commercialkitchen205.com. Back to work, sorry, more vacation stuff - the artist studios at Sawyer Yards are open this Saturday, with additional hours noon - 5 p.m. That includes Silos at Sawyer Yards, Winter Street Studios, Silver Street Studios and around the corner at Spring Street Studios. Details on all at SawyerYards.com The Market at Sawyer Yards, my little stake in this goldmine of an art haven, has finally moved onto its new home in Artist Alley. There’s a great mix of artist exhibitors, food, drink and it’s rumored that Holler Brewing company may be open, too. Swing by the information booth and grab a campus map, you may need some direction touring 300 art studios. Sawyerstreetmarket.com. See you next week with more vacation plans. Tacos A Go Go open for business
Your stocking stuffer store!
By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader Tacos A Go Go located at 3401 West T.C. Jester Blvd. officially opened this week. Originally the location of Roznovsky’s Hamburgers, the dining spot received an extensive facelift after closing as a burger joint in April, 2015. The small store will employ about 30 locals, and took more than a year and a half to complete, leaving many anxiously waiting.
“We thought, because it was an existing restaurant, we could utilize existing elements. Then we discovered that upgrades were necessary.” - Founder Sharon Haynes. “There were complications,” explained owner/founder Sharon Haynes of the time it took. “We thought that, because it was an existing restaurant, we could utilize existing elements. Then we discovered that upgrades were necessary. And Houston’s city permitting office is so backed up that it cost us a lot of time too. Fortunately, we have wonderful landlords in Braun Enterprises and were finally able to make it happen,” Haynes concluded. Those who know Tacos A Go Go’s first two locations, one on in the Heights on White Oak Drive and one on Main St. in Midtown, are familiar with the fare - fresh, made-fromscratch, authentic street tacos stating at $2.39. At the Oak Forest store, locals can chow down on Tacos A Go Go’s barbacoa taco for $3.99, made from slow-stewed lamb topped with chopped onions, cilantro, and queso fresco. Texas Monthly called it “One of the 63 tacos you must eat before you die.” Or try the the breakfast tacos, top sellers available morning, noon and night. While Haynes and her res-

taurants take the food seriously, the interiors are an entertaining mishmash of what she identifies as, “Mexican street art that includes kitsch from the culture. We try to capture the humor, the rich colors, and the wonderful flavors of Mexican life and show them off,” Haynes explained. Stop by to see the light fixtures and chandelier made from empty bottles of Jarritos (Mexican soft drinks). Don’t miss the vignette of 3-dimensional dancing skeletons with life-sized tacos in their bony hands.
Haynes brought in a partner for this effort. Washington D.C. chef Mallory Buford will be the Director of Operations at the new Tacos A Go Go and the other locations under Haynes charge. “My job is to take things off Sharon’s plate,” said Buford. Little wonder. Haynes is a wife, mother of two teens, a sculptor, and an entrepreneur. “To help out,” Buford added, “I will spend a lot of time here in Oak Forest and that’s fine with me. I like Houston, and I really like this area.” The T.C. Jester location ob-
tained an alcohol license and will carry draft beer as well as frozen drinks, including Tacos A Go Go’s popular jalapeno margaritas. In the future, the location will also be serving aquas frescas, or Mexican fresh fruit juices made from fruits such as watermelons or cantaloupes. The juices can be mixed with rum or tequila for extra merriment. Then, add in the soon-tobe-completed front and side patios for outdoor dining and there will be no need to leave the ‘hood for the sights and flavors of Mexican street life. Plus, there is no flight charge.
