CT Lung Scan Offers Early Detection at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a fitting time to take action against the leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women. Smokers and former smokers, generally considered at high risk for lung cancer, are encouraged to schedule a lung CT (computed tomography) scan at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. Medicare often covers the cost of the scan. “Lung cancer is often not discovered until its final stages, so about 75 percent of lung cancer patients typically present with symptoms when the cancer is more advanced and the disease is no longer curable,” says Aparna Surapaneni, M.D., a radiation oncologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. “Our goal is to identify patients at a much earlier stage when treatment is more effective and the patient has a much

higher chance for cure.” Lung CT Scan Versus Standard Chest X-ray Unlike a standard chest X-ray, the lung CT scan takes multiple cross-sectional images of the entire chest.
Dr. Surapaneni cites convincing results from the National Lung Screening Trial, which studied more than 50,000 heavy smokers. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, the trial compared the rate of lung cancer detection from CT scans compared to X-rays. Its findings, published in 2013, showed that lung CT scans were far more accurate and able to diagnose cancer at an earlier stage. In fact, individuals who received the low-dose lung CT scans had a 15 percent to 20 percent lower risk of dying from lung cancer than those who received standard chest X-rays. Candidates for Screening “Usually the recommendations for screening are highly correlated with a history of smoking, even if the individual has no symptoms,” Dr. Surapaneni explains. “A person between 55 to 79 years of age who has smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years should be screened. Individuals who quit smoking within the past 15 years are also recommended to
be screened.” A Quick and Comfortable Test The order for a screening lung CT scan can be obtained from a patient’s primary care physician. “The test itself is painless and utilizes a very low dose of radiation exposure, resulting in a low rate of exposure,” Dr. Surapaneni says. “There’s no IV, nothing to drink and no fasting requirements. The entire procedure, from entering and leaving the procedure room, only takes about 10 minutes. The scan itself is completed in less than one minute.” Affordability Not an Issue The cost of the CT lung scan is reasonable. Medicare covers the cost for eligible individuals. Most major commercial insurance carriers also cover the cost. If the patient has a problem with insurance approval, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights also offers at a cash price. To schedule a lung CT scan at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, call 713-867-3336.

How does alcohol affect your health? By Monica Thomas, MPH, RD, LD For The Leader
Photo by Betsy Denson Nancy Ann Gonzalez has been dancing at 610 for almost a year, and has lost 35 pounds to boot.
All she wants to do is dance By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If your morning commute takes you to the stoplight on TC Jester near 610, then you probably are aware of the dance moves of Oak Forest’s Nancy Ann Gonzalez. For the past 11 months Gonzalez has made that corner part of her morning workout, and her enthusiasm for exercise has gotten her noticed by her neighbors who gave her a recent shout out on social media. What people may not know however is that the effort is part of a lifestyle change that Gonzalez started a year and a half ago – and one that has resulted in a 35 pound weight loss. “Physical fitness is very important to me,” said Gonzalez. “My husband had a heart attack three years ago, and wound up having a triple bypass. We are parents to a seven-year-old and I would like to be around for her. Plus, my mother passed away when she was 45 from cancer, which is my current age. I’d like to be here for my daughter as much as possible.” Gonzalez runs to 610 and TC Jester to get her heart rate up and then does what she loves the most – dances. “I was in ballet and tap since I was three years old, then in drill team in my teenage years,” Gonzalez said. During her morning regimen she includes a lot of elements such as fast walking, running,

dancing, high jumps, donkey kicks, jumping jacks, pushups, and sit-ups. She usually runs and dances anywhere from three to five days a week. “I try to clock in 25 to 30 miles a week,” she said. “I usually give myself an hour and a half a day to work out.” Gonzalez says she enjoys exercising in that particular spot for no particular reason. “One day, I just decided to allow myself to be me,” she said. “I felt safe because it was a public area and I had read that females had gotten attacked at Memorial Park a couple of years back, which is where I used to run for many years before I decided to run in our area.” Gonzalez says that people sometimes honk but she is not sure if they are honking at her, or at fellow neighbors trying to get where they need to get during their morning drive. “I am also listening to my playlist and have my headsets in,” she said. “I usually don’t look at the people in their cars directly, or wave. I’ve only had two people actually come up to me while I’m exercising, one to ask me out to dinner. I told him I was married. Mostly everyone in the neighborhood has been incredibly respectful and receptive in allowing me to do See Dance P. 2B
A night of drinking alcohol heavily can lead to that pesky hangover feeling. However, is a hangover really the only side effect we should be worried about? Thai massage bringing all senses back into harmony For The Leader The rigors of every-day life – jump in the car, sit in traffic, get to work, sit at a desk, rinse, repeat – can take its toll on every aspect of our being. Now, a local Thai massage parlor is offering residents the chance to sink into a world of peace and relaxation, all the while bringing the mind, body and soul together again. Tucked away in Suite A at 737 W. Cavalcade, Harmony Thai Massage Owner Souri Sisavath says the massage aims to bring the three energies – mind, body and spirit – back into focus. Sisavath, a native of Laos, learned the art of the Thai massage as it was passed down from generation to generation, in this case from her grandmother, a native of Thailand. After completing training in 2001-2002, she said her mission in life suddenly became abundantly clear. “I realized the healing potential of Thai massage and decided to pursue my career in it with a mission of helping others, she said. Thai massage uses the gentle pressure on energy lines and yoga-like stretching to relax the body on a deeper level. Sisavath said this relaxation

a deeper, more restorative night’s sleep as well. Finally, this deeper sleep allows the body to heal itself physically, and allows people to feel more refreshed upon awakening. Sisavath says Thai massage can help improve flexibil-
ity and reduce tension while stimulating the internal organs and balancing the body’s energy system; and it has also been proven particularly useful in remedying headaches, migraines, arthritis, sciatica, scoliosis, chronic fatigue and numerous other conditions. Harmony Thai Massage offers a plethora of options, from those trying Thai massages for the first time or those veterans who rave about its effects. Among its offerings are Chakra therapy, Holy Fire Reiki session, an aromatherapy massage, a traditional stone massage, cupping and more. Souri and her staff also offer classes on techniques ranging from hot stone therapy, energy lines and aromatherapy to Chakra therapy, ear candle therapy and multiple levels of Reiki workshops. Every therapy offered (outside of Thai pregnancy massage), Sisavath says, is suitable for both men and women. Fire damages local restaurant, nearby apartments By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
For years, Southern Goods restaurant and bar has provided Heights residents a homey, comfortable atmosphere to enjoy their menu where interpretation of traditional meets modern Southern cuisine. But now the staple, as well as neighboring apartments, are picking up the pieces after an accidental fire earlier this week. According to a report from the Houston Fire Department,
crews were dispatched to the spot at 632 W. 19th Street shortly before midnight Monday, Nov. 5 after a passerby saw smoke billowing from the back of the restaurant, which was closed at the time of the fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the two-story pitched roof apartment building with heavy fire and smoke coming from the second floor and attic space. Upon that discovery, HFD representatives said the incident was switched to defensive
mode and after firefighters knocked down the fire, they confined and prevented the spread of the fire throughout the rest of the U-shaped building. Also upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the back of the restaurant, and the fire was contained to the kitchen area with no extension to other rooms or the attic. Per the Houston Fire Department, although the fire appeared to have started around the ice machine, firefighters
Constable’s office conducts special active shooter procedures meeting By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
In light of the tragic shooting in Sutherland Springs Sunday morning, the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office conducted a special gathering of local clergy members aimed at discussing how to keep congregations safe should a similar event befall a local place of worship earlier this week. Constable Alan Rosen was, as many are, incensed at this happening once again. “It’s tragic – it just doesn’t get any worse than that. People are at a place where they should feel safe and secure. They’re in their place of worship praying to their god, and some shooter comes in and starts killing people. It’s just awful, and something has to give. We’ve had too many of these mass shootings across our country to stand by idle and not do anything,” Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said. “There needs to be some sensible gun legislation put together to deal with this issue, otherwise we’ll keep seeing these mass shootings.” In the meantime, however, Rosen said he wanted to do whatever he could to protect the local area’s synagogues, mosques, churches and every other place of worship, lead-
ing to the event which served as the first step in creating an action plan in the event something similar occurs inside their doors. Rosen and his deputies first assessed the overall security situation at each of the churches in attendance, pointing out any vulnerabilities they saw in them. Following the assessment, deputies and worship clergy collaborated on discussion of current security teams, such as a security guard or law enforcement; and if they possessed none, a subsequent discussion took place on how to form a makeshift security committee that would serve as the congregation’s eyes and ears on suspicious activity. Additionally, Rosen said the potential remains for these committees to go through the open carry licensing course so they could carry a concealed firearm. Finally, deputies and congregation members role played potential situations to demonstrate the “Run, Hide or Fight” strategy. They also worked on a plan to teach the importance and avenues of communication should potential threats enter various places of worship, and how to keep a tight eye on visitors. “A lot of times you have various places of worship
which receive threats a lot, so they need to share those threats among all the local places of worship they are at. We’re also going to train people on what to do should an active shooter come in,” Rosen said. “We’re going to put together a nice protocol as to how they should handle guests that come into their places of worship. We’re going to find ways we can fortify our places of worship.”
were unable to determine the cause, after which HFD Arson declared it accidental. There were no injuries, and the fire was declared under control shortly after midnight Tuesday Nov. 6. According to the Houston Fire Department, total damage was estimated to be about $20,000 structurally speaking and $10,000 to contents of the restaurant, while 27 apartment units were also reported damaged.
Photo by Maureen Hall Firefighters work in the aftermath of a late night fire at Southern Goods at 1632 W. 19th Street in the Heights on Monday, Nov. 5. The fire, which damaged about $30,000 worth of structure and 27 units in a nearby apartment complex, was ruled accidental.

’s Health Women SPX, St. Thomas now battling for Directory TAPPS supremacy Sports.
By Mike Tenney For The Leader The St. Pius X football team can keep this TAPPS Division 1 District 3 championship race from being one big cluster. Meanwhile, the St. Thomas football team can ensure this journey becomes chaotic. The two teams will meet 7:30 p.m. Friday night for the district title at what will be the newly-named Gary Kubiak Stadium, and it is very simple right now. St. Pius X, which is 2-0 in the district and 6-1 overall, can clinch an undefeated district crown outright and a probable first-round bye in next week’s opening-round of the TAPPS state playoffs with a win over the Eagles. The Panthers remained perfect in the league last Friday night with a 61-12 whipping of Beaumont Kelly in the Golden Triangle. Meanwhile, St. Thomas slipped into a second-place tie with Tomball Concordia Lutheran last Friday night with a 38-31 loss to the Crusaders, putting them both 1-1 in league play behind St. Pius X. However, with a victory over the explosive Panthers, both teams would finish 2-1 in league, but the Eagles would own the tiebreaker, possibly giving them a bye during the first round. And should the Eagles pull off the big road win Friday, there will be a three-way tie for first place if Concordia Lutheran beats Kelly, which is very likely. But if the red-and-white loses, they will likely finish third in the district and probably start the postseason next week with a road game. St. Pius X definitely looked playoff-ready on both sides of the football in their win over Kelly. The Panthers accumulated 423 yards in total offense while the defense surrendered just 62 yards on 42 plays from scrimmage by the Bulldogs.
With junior quarterback Grant Gunnell completing 16-of-20 passes for 272 yards and seven touchdowns in only one half of play, the Panthers scored 54 points by halftime to lead Kelly, 54-7, after two periods of play. Wide receiver Jalen Currie caught three of those scores while Trenton Waggoner and Chase Lane each hauled in two scoring receptions from Gunnell. Besides the strong passing attack, the Panthers also ran the ball well with junior Kaleb Ducros picking up 58 yards on just six carries while freshman Jace Wilson had 55 more on eight rushes. For St. Thomas, its best defense might be its offense and its ability to keep the Panther offense off the field. The Eagles have been hit by injuries on the defensive side the past few weeks, forcing them to test their depth. St. Thomas took a 21-14 lead over the Crusaders last week and made it 28-14 on a touchdown that was called back midway through the second quarter. But from that point on, the visitors outscored the Eagles, 24-10, the rest of the way for the come-from-behind win. Like Gunnell, who had just one rush against Kelly but it was a 23-yard pickup, the Eagles have a dual-threat quarterback in junior Peyton Motocha, who ran for three touchdowns and threw for one more against Concordia Lutheran. Motocha has been the team’s leading rusher in a few games this year and doesn’t hesitate to tuck the ball in and take off when he sees a possible opening. Senior wide receiver Parker Nelms has been the Eagles’ top receiver and he along with junior Hunter Cheek, have given Motocha a couple of reliable targets to throw too when he isn’t extending a play with his running ability.
Waltrip, Heights in prime playoff position By Mike Tenney For The Leader Waltrip With an undefeated district championship on their resume, the unbeaten Rams will skip their previously-scheduled open date this week when they host South Houston Trojans at 7 p.m. Friday night at Delmar Stadium. The Rams ran their record to 8-0 overall and finished a perfect 8-0 in District 24-5A when they rolled past Wisdom, 44-0, last Thursday night to complete their district schedule. The Trojans enter with a two-game win streak after they whipped fellow Pasadena ISD mate Sam Rayburn, 42-7, last week. Heights The Bulldogs snapped a two-game district losing streak and remained in third place in District 18-6A with a 44-9 triumph over Houston Chavez Saturday afternoon to complete their regular season. The Heights, led by head coach Stephen Dixon, are now preparing for the upcoming 6A Division II playoffs where they will face an opponent out of District 17-6A. Cy-Fair and Langham Creek both lead the district with 7-0 records and they have clinched playoff spots, along with Cy Ranch, which enters this week alone in third place at 5-2. So, the final playoff spot comes participant will be either Cy Creek or Cy Falls, both of which enter
the final week of play at 4-3 in the district and tied for fourth place. Quarterback Mark Castro continues to lead the Heights’ offense, which is looking for all the playmakers it can find going into the playoffs. The Bulldogs were able to run and throw the ball effectively against the Lobos last Friday and will look to keep that going in the postseason. The Bulldogs should also get a big boost in the playoffs with the return of a healthy Torrin Polk, a sophomore running back who should help them with their ground game. Lutheran High North The Lions will look to end their season on a bright note 7 p.m. Friday night when they visit Bay Area Christian in League City. The North suffered a tough 29-27 loss to Legacy Prep Christian Academy last Friday night, dropping them to 3-5 in their TAPPS district and officially ending their playoff hopes. It was also their second consecutive loss after they had gotten to the .500 mark at 3-3 two weeks ago and were sitting right in the middle of the postseason picture. Bay Area Christian is 4-4 in the conference and can possibly get into the playoffs with a win and a little help from other teams in the league. But if the Lions can rise up and defeat the Broncos, they will end BAC’s playoff hopes as well.

Holiday travel and your pet: now’s the time to plan Dear Tabby, We are planning to travel for the holidays. What are your thoughts on how to make sure your pet is taken care of when you’re away? Thanksgiving trekking in Timbergrove Dear Thanksgiving Trekking, November is an exciting month. Not only is it “Adopt-A-SeniorPet” month across the country, (most shelters have promotions with reduced adoption fees for pets over a certain age--check it out!) but it’s also the beginning of a busy travel season. I’m sure you’ve already made your travel plans but have you made plans for your pet? The clock is ticking, but there’s still time to make sure that everyone is happy, healthy and well-cared for this holiday season. If your pet is more of a homebody (like, yours truly) I’d recommend finding a pet sitter to come to your home to care for your pet. A good pet sitter will be bonded and insured and come over before your trip to meet the pets that he or she will be caring for during your absence. You can have the pet sitter come as many times a day as you’d like--however many pet sitters have a strict rule to come at least once a day, in order to make sure that everyone is healthy and happy at all times--so keep that in mind when planning your pet sitter budget. Many pet sitters will bring in your mail, open and close your blinds and

alternate lights, in order to give the appearance of someone being at home while you’re away. Visit www.petsit.com to locate a pet sitter in your area. If your pet would prefer to go somewhere else and hang out while you’re away, look into pet boarding facilities. Here in Houston, the options range from serene, cat-only boarding all the way to ranch-style fun for critters of all shapes and sizes. Plan to book early and have your pet’s vaccination records on hand if you plan to board. Your vet might be able to recommend a boarding facility that will suit your pet’s needs. Perhaps your pet would enjoy traveling with you this holiday season. If you prefer not to burden your hosts with the addition of your precious pet, look into hotels that are pet friendly. Many of the large hotel chains are pet friendly. Go to www.tripswithpets.com to see a comprehensive listing of all pet friendly hotels. No matter which route you take, by ensuring that your pet is cared for while you’re traveling, you’ll both rest easy knowing that he is in the best of care. Many boarding facilities and pet sitters will send photos, email updates and sometimes even facilitate a Skype session between you and your pet. The best news is that you’ll be able to enjoy your time away from home this holiday, knowing that your favorite animal companion is happy and content as well.

Pet of the Week Meet Aamina. “Aamina” means “safe” in Arabic and that’s exactly what this sweet terrier-mix is now. Aamina was found on the side of a very busy road and got lucky when a volunteer stopped to help. Aamina is about 2-3 years old, a little skittish, but terribly sweet. Would your family be able to be Aamina’s safe place for the rest of her life? If so, contact Animal Justice League at: www.animalsjusticeleague. org.
