It’s two years for Wabash on N. Shepherd By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com When Wabash Feed & Garden Store owners Betty Heacker and Devin Jones got their spruced up new bus, they considered using it for deliveries but decided instead just to use it for exposure. It’s been two years since Wabash moved to 4537 N. Shepherd Dr. and promotion is still as important as ever. When deciding where to move from their longtime location on Washington Avenue, Heacker said that part of the process was looking at their mailing list. “We knew that a large percentage of our customers were already here,” said Heacker. Still, she did understand that they’d lose business from the Memorial area and River Oaks. “We knew when we moved that we could grow,” said Heacker. “We wanted to connect to the new neighborhood.” Wabash is doing that by starting to host more events at the store, such as recent talks about Urban Beekeeping and Fall Vegetable gardening as well as a Fall Family Fun day which featured costume contests for pets, pumpkin decorating and a Fall photo set-up. “The petting zoo in the spring brought out a lot of kids,” said marketing director Rhondda Black. “We have more space here so we can do more things. The gift area is larger and we can carry more Texas food products.” Heacker hopes to expand their outreach to garden clubs and area schools. “Young urban kids can see things that they can’t easily

see in the city,” said Heacker. “Here they can hold bunnies and baby chicks. We see ourselves as a little part of the country in the city.” That’s pretty much been true for the 100 years the store been in business. It started in 1908 as a consumer grain store. The German family who owned it sold the store in the early 1980s to an interior designer who wanted to use the big barn as a show room to house the rustic furniture that was so popular. “He kept and sold the feed in the back room for three years,” said Heacker. However, with a downturn in the markets and the de-

Finches, according to Heacker, are as prolific as rabbits. “You started with a pair, Contributed photo Wabash’s Fall Family Fun day featured a pet costume contest, a photo booth and pumpkin decorating.

By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com The Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL) is opening its first Texas location in the Houston Heights. It’ll be December of this year or early 2019 when locals will get to try their hand at axe throwing. After a camping trip where CEO Matt Wilson discovered a passion for axe throwing, he established BATL in 2006 in Toronto, Canada. “When I started doing it, it was just in my backyard with eight of my friends. I never expected it to grow this big,” said Wilson. And from those humble beginnings, BATL has grown into a business with over twenty locations in North America, while extending overseas is in consideration. When Wilson talked about why he thought axe throwing is becoming more popular, he said it’s something about the actual word, “axe.” There’s an automatic interest when
clining price of oil, people weren’t buying antiques anymore. Heacker bought the store from him in 1985 but kept the name he’d given it. Wabash is an acronym that stands for Washington Avenue Bric-a-brac Antiques Sundry and Hardware. Who knew? She kept selling the rustic furniture, including lots of wardrobes to new Heights residents who lived in the original small homes with no closets. “At the time, The Heights was just beginning to renew itself,” said Heacker. Eventually it got harder to source that kind of furniture at a decent price, but the store still offered feed and was starting to sell more pet food. Heacker birthed the garden part of the store, first picking up transplants from Canino Produce on Airline and later from a rep at Conroe Greenhouse – who asked Heacker if she’d ever thought about selling herbs. “We had 26 varieties, all basil,” remembers Heacker with a laugh. Devin Jones began working at Wabash in 1990 and is now a co-owner who comes in to support the store and front counter every Tuesday and Friday. “It’s been interesting,” said Jones. “We’re still building.”

someone mentions, “axe throwing,” from the way it sounds to the image it brings to mind. Because axe throwing is not the norm, curiosity is sparked, but there’s not the fear of trying something different like there might be with something more dangerous, like skydiving.
“Most people believe it’s something they can do,” said Wilson. Axe throwing can also be therapeutic. You must be relaxed to be able to concentrate on the target. Without focusing, the axe won’t hit See Axe League P. 3B

That market shrank too – but the store still sells a lot of farm related poultry, like chickens, ducks, geese, guinea hens and peacocks. In the spring they might sell water fowl, like whistling ducks or wood ducks that people buy as breeding pairs to start populations at country homes. The chickens are something they’ll likely never get away from. “When Washington Avenue turned into townhomes, we figured the sale of laying hens would die down,” said Heacker. “But that didn’t happen.” The feed is a mainstay too with customers who drive in from Tomball and Sugarland for product. “We look carefully at the ingredients of everything we buy, preferring preservative-free, organic and non-GMO when possible,” said Heacker. “We sell a little more horse feed at this location.”
Heacker says the gardening aspect continues to develop and that they sell much larger plants here because people want something that will make an immediate impact in the yard. “People want gallon plant material,” she said. “We’re selling a lot more yard art too.” Heacker and Jones are still working hard to let people know where Wabash is. Heacker notes that most people turn right off of 43rd onto North Shepherd instead of left so they don’t get the through traffic they used to on Washington. “I run into people in Garden Oaks who tell me that they can’t find us,” said Heacker. She says that they’ll keep tweaking and adding to their current inventory as the community dictates. “At the old store, we were the old woman and the shoe,” she said. “Now we have room to grow, and we’re still seeing where we can expand.”

In today’s day and age, many professions – sports, technology, and more – employ specialists, with one key area of focus. However, there is one local real estate agent who possesses a multi-layered skill set to aid any and all comers. Century 21 Top Realty agent Patrick Bilnoski is a licensed Texas realtor, part of the Texas Association of Realtors as well as the National Association of Realtors. A native Houstonian and Oak Forest resident who still lives in the area, Bilnoski – along with his team at Century 21 – provides real estate services for both residential and commercial properties, as well as investment options. “Whenever I was graduating from Waltrip H.S., real estate was something I always had an interest in,” said Bilnoski, who ultimately went to U of H with a double major in entrepreneurship and marketing before making his way into real estate 13 years ago. “When I first got into real estate, I began working for a commercial real estate firm so I could develop a strong skillset and knowledge of the commercial industry. However, I also had a desire to fully develop my knowledge in the residential side of real estate in order to assist anyone that walked through the door from first time home buyers, to high end homes sales and home investors.” Now, with more than a decade of experience Bilnoski has served as Vice President of Century 21 for the past three years. Working with both buyers and sellers, the lion’s share of his services come from the Heights area through Garden Oaks and Oak Forest, Spring Branch, as well as the East End. Commercially, he has aided clients buying, selling, and leasing property anywhere from the metro Houston area to Dallas and

San Antonio. “At this point in time, I have a team that will help do anything the client needs,” he said. “When I started in commercial real estate, I was a tenant rep, assisting in locating space and negotiating leases. Now, through the course of my career, not only do I help clients find what they need or want, but we’re also helping landlords sell or lease their property.” Above all, Bilnoski knows that negotiating on a certain location – whether commercial or residential – can present a gargantuan obstacle, especially for anyone largely unfamiliar with or new to the process, and strives to make the process as painless as possible. “Buying and selling residential properties can be stressful enough without guidance, but it can rise to another level for commercial properties when you add all the additional factors that could be involved,” he said. “The question I always ask myself, is why would someone not want assistance when this not what they do day in and day out? Having someone on your side is always beneficial.” For his part, Bilnoski believes his diverse portfolio and experience, along with his knowledge of the local neighborhoods and their dynamics, offers an X-Factor to his clients. “I want to do the best I can for any person I work with, and I make sure to listen to what that is for each and every person – because it’s different every time,” he said. “I feel as though because of my experience within the business – on both the residential and commercial side of things – making sure to negotiate the best deal possible for my clients is something of value I can bring them.” Any prospective clients can reach Bilnoski via email at patrick@century21toprealty.com or by phone at 713-202-4757.

The Best Product for Your Baby Can’t Be Bought that breastfeeding is “inconvenient”? Miller sees breast milk as the ultimate convenience food. There are no bottles to clean, no sterilizing, nothing --in most instances -- to warm at feeding time. There’s nothing to buy, store, mix or refrigerate; and no product recalls to worry about. Everything is self-contained, close-at-hand and, most importantly, formulated specifically for each baby. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights offers two breastfeeding classes each month, taught by board-certified lactation consultants like Havard. The one-time, two-anda-half-hour session builds expectant mothers’ confidence and helps them understand what’s normal (and what’s not) and how to prevent problems. Although it’s never too early in the pregnancy to discuss breastfeeding with the OB/Gyn, Miller advises taking the class during the third trimester because the delivery is much more immediate. Memorial Hermann Greater Heights also offers newborn and breastfeeding classes in Spanish.
Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader Sometimes the oldest way of doing something really is the best – especially when it comes to feeding your baby. In the 151 years since the first artificial milk appeared on the market, nobody has ever been able to develop a product as good as breast milk. The benefits for both babies and mothers are indisputable, according to Carie Miller, RN, MSN, the Perinatal Community Outreach Coordinator, at the Family Birthing Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. “First, breast milk is more than food; it’s protection for babies,” she says. “Antibodies for anything the mother has been exposed to are contained in the milk. It provides anti-virals, anti-fungals, antibacterials and probiotics that are unique to a baby’s needs.” That is why breastfed babies typically are healthier and have lower medical costs. Also, breastfeeding reduces the baby’s risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and developing allergies, asthma, diabetes and certain cancers, particularly leukemias. The benefits of breastfeeding can last a lifetime. Breastfeeding also supports better brain development. The fat in breast milk,

according to Miller, finishes off babies’ brain development in a way that has never been reproduced in alternative milk substances. Put simply – “Baby Mozart” and intellectual stimulation games cannot substitute for six months to a year of breastfeeding. The reason is fairly simple, Miller explains. “Milk from a cow – the basis of breast milk substitutes – is designed to
create muscle. Human milk, on the other hand, creates brains.” Mothers see the benefits of breastfeeding as well. Beyond the natural bonding that occurs, breastfeeding reduces the risk of post-partum hemorrhage, breast and ovarian cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. For the more serious axe thrower, there’s an axe throwing league. To join, no experience is necessary. The league is a great way to spend time with friends and make new ones, all while taking part in a friendly competition. The league goes for seven weeks of regular sessions, and on the eighth week play-offs will take place. BATL’s league finishes in the National Axe Throwing Championship, where qualifying players compete against the best players globally. “We take pride in the operation we do,” said Wilson, and about newcomers, “you
don’t know you want to [throw an axe] until you do.” When BATL does open, there will be an open house so that people interested in axe throwing can try it for free. It will be located off of T.C. Jester, next door to King’s BierHaus.
Axe League from P. 1B where you want it to. The BATL venue is created to make it easy for people who are trying something new, or for people who are participating in a league to have fun. The axe throwing “arenas” are described on BATL’s website as comparable to a cross between a bowling alley and a batting cage, with private space for groups of any size. Expert coaches will guide any group or private event through instructions and practice, before leading the groups into a group play-off. Public walk-in sessions are open only on the weekends, but newcomers will still be instructed by a coach and more seasoned axe throwers can get tips on technique. er breastfeeds, the greater the protection. Some mothers-to-be worry about the economics of breastfeeding. What if there’s not enough supply to meet the baby’s nutritional demands? That, Miller reassures, isn’t a worry. “The more the baby feeds, the more the supply is replenished.”
She cites an example that board-certified lactation consultant Dana Havard, RN, shares with her breastfeeding classes at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. “It’s like an icemaker. As long as you’re using ice, the bin refills. When you stop, the bin quits refilling and the ice begins to evaporate and disappear.”

What about the myth
Home sales mixed, prices plummet in September By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com September was a strong month for several housing markets in The Leader area, while others cooled off considerably following a hot and heavy August showing, Meanwhile, price drops littered the figures in the most recent report from the Houston Assocation of Realtors (HAR). “With tight inventory, rising interest rates and families focused on back-to-school, it wasn’t a huge surprise to see market activity slow down at this time,” said HAR Chair Kenya Burrell-VanWormer with JPMorgan Chase. “The Houston economy is strong. As we head into the fall months, it will definitely take a healthy supply of homes and some pricing moderation to keep prospective buyers engaged in the market.” 77018 Home buyers in Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Shepherd Park Plaza, and Candlelight Plaza were among the more aggressive September buyers according to HAR’s more recent report, showing a 28.6 percent uptick – from 42 to 54 – last month compared to September 2017. It was the second-highest YOY increase among local neighborhoods. Year-to-date, home sales are 14.5 percent ahead of the area’s 2017 pace. Accompanying the rise in sales, however, was a price drop across the board. YOY average home price dipped 9 percent (down to $414,413), while median home prices were down to $370,000 in the area – about a 6.3 percent drop. 77092 The western edge of Garden Oaks/Oak Forest and neighborhoods just west of Highway 290 were the only local buyers in attack mode more than their neighbors, with a 92.9 percent spike – from 14 to 27 – in single-family home sales last month relative to their September 2017 mark. It was one of just two areas (along with their neighbors to the east) to experience a rise in sales. On a yearto-date basis, the 184 homes sold is slightly (1.7 percent) outstripping last year’s pace. Average home prices in this area (north of $300,000 last September) dipped about 3 percent down to $293,356 at month’s end, while the neighborhood’s median home prices were down slightly more than 5 percent compared to September 2017.
Oak Forest/SPP/Candelight Plaza became more aggressive, the eastern portion of the Heights (Woodland Heights, Sunset Heights) saw the most relative passive year-over-year trend in local neighborhoods. Only 40 homes came off the market here last month, compared to 57 the previous September. That 29.8 percent dip was the single-largest single-family drop-off in Leader area. Yearto-date, however, the market remains more than 9 percent ahead of 2017’s pace, with 423 sales closing compared to 387 in the same time frame last year. The neighborhood’s average home price – barely north
77008 Moving on down to the largest portion of The Leader’s coverage area, greater Heights and Lazybrook/Timbergrove home buyers held relatively steady across the board. The 71 closings represented just one less home than September 2017’s mark. Thus far in 2018, buyers in this neighborhood are closing at a rate 3 percent ahead of last year’s pace with 780 sales year-to-date compared to 757 at the same point last year. On the pricing front, it was more of the same, with a less than 1 percent rise in both average and median prices compared to last September.

Neighbors: Waltrip Band earns 1st Division Overall Superior Rating By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com
Waltrip Class of 1963 celebrated its 55th graduation anniversary along with attendees from classes 1961, 1962 and 1964 on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Backyard Grill. A big shout out to Waltrip football Coach Wheeler for the loan of a Waltrip helmet and 1963 jersey. Congratulations to Leo Titt, a student at White Horse Academy of Martial Arts. Leo tested for 2nd gup Brown Belt on Oct. 16. Leo is 11 years old, has been training for three years and not only has Leo demonstrated his determination to achieve his goals, he is the first student to test for Rank at White Horse Academy’s new location at 5608 Pinemont. Well done, Leo! Neighbors Allison Mattingly and Angie Coussirathave opened Noted. Paper Goods, a new stationery store in the Heights. Located at 1901 Lawrence, Noted carries greeting cards, stationery, wrapping paper, and many other types of lovely paper goods. This is exciting news for those who hope to see the time-honored tradition of handwritten journals, mailed notes and invitations, thank you cards and personal letters, among other things, continued and celebrated, as well as shared with the next generation. You’ll find stickers, calendars, agendas, colorful gift bags and wrapping paper, pens, greeting cards, festive decorations and more in the shop. One can shop online and pick up in the store, too. Noted’s first workshop, “Bullet Journaling,” is set for Nov. 11 and will be led by Mattingly. Check the website at https:// noteddesignco.com for more details. Other workshops and events will soon be added to the website, so stay tuned! Mattingly and Coussirat are very excited to be part of the Heights “Shop Local” experience while friends and family are thrilled to see these ladies making their dream come true. Our neighbor in Candlelight Oaks, Emily Pennington, quite a business-minded young lady with her own line of fashion design and a couple of fashion shows under her belt, has created a non-profit called Strut HTX and she is working diligently to create “Care Closets” full of personal care and hygiene products in lower income schools around Houston.
Currently, Strut HTX is working with Waltrip H.S., Wainwright Elementary and Sam Houston H.S., and the nonprofit business is rapidly expanding. There are many students who struggle to look and feel their best on a daily basis due to the lack of things most of us take for granted such as brushes, combs, wash cloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, etc. Pennington said, “Strut aims to provide care closets in low income schools around Houston, filled to the brim with personal goods, free of charge for any child in need of them. While these products may not be much, I hope that they can provide these kids with confidence and take at least one of their worries away, helping them thrive.” Pennington is hoping to see Care Closets installed in 25 schools in Houston by the beginning of 2019. She invites you to read more about the organization and view the complete donation list at www.struthtx. com. And – there is a t-shirt for that, too! Interested neighbors can purchase a stylish t-shirt supporting Strut HTX on the website as well. On Oct. 23, the Waltrip High School Ram Band earned a 1st Division Overall Superior Rating at the UIL Marching Band Contest at Legacy Stadium in Katy. Jesse Espinosa, Director of Bands at Waltrip, said, “I’m so proud of the outstanding performance from our band. Thank you to Mr. Ferreira, Mr. Leon, Mr. Stephens, Mrs. Espinosa, drum majors, student leaders, volunteers, parents, and band alumni for your dedication to our program. We could not have achieved this feat without all of your support. Every year there are many obstacles in our path and every year I’m amazed with the determination our students have to conquer anything and everything in their way. To the Waltrip Rams, thank you for always backing us up. Go Ram Band!” Over the weekend, Oct. 20, the Waltrip Band competed in the Third Annual Prairie View A&M University Marching Invitational at Panther Stadium. Espinosa, along with Waltrip’s new assistant band directors Daniel Ferriera from Massachusetts and Erik Leon, an alum from Waltrip’s Class of 1995, are very proud to announce the following awards earned by the phenomenal Ram Band: Most Outstanding Colorguard, Most Outstanding Soloist, Most Outstanding

General Effect, Most Outstanding Music, Most Outstanding Drum Major, 1st place in the Large Band category and Overall Grand Champion! And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree … Jesse and Celena Espinosa are proud to share the news that their son, Jesse Espinosa, a 7th grade trumpet player in the Honors and Jazz Bands at Frank Black Middle School, earned 7th chair in the All City Middle School Band. Heights High School’s proud Band of Bulldogs has come a long, long way in just a few years under the direction of Band Director Eric Jimenez. Jimenz shared, “Our band program has reached new HEIGHTS! We received a 1st Division-Superior Rating at the UIL Marching Contest. Our band will advance to Area Marching Contest for the 1st time in our school’s history!” Jimenez continued, explaining, “An inner-city comprehensive 6A band program that had dwindled down to only 56 returning band members in 2016 after receiving a 3-4-5 at UIL Concert and Sight Reading just made history. I can vividly remember a colleague telling me, ‘You’ll never make a 1 in HISD.’ Well, with some of the hardest working kiddos, a hardworking staff, the best Heights High Parent Music Booster Club and the most loving family, we did it! Thank you Bob Chreste, Dr. Cory Meals and Rob Sullens for creating a production

that helped us reach this level.” Richard Smith, the amazing Band Director at Frank Black Middle School, announced the following students will represent Frank Black M.S. in the HISD All-City Band: Brynn
Carl (clarinet), Isabella Barron (clarinet), Heidi Hess (alto saxophone), Jesse Espinosa (trumpet), Miles Oppinger (euphonium) and Benjamin Griffith (trombone).
