Craft beer rooted in community By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Beer has always had a way of bringing people together. Now, local breweries have become the hub of community gatherings and information. From events to engage the public to giving back through fundraising, breweries are helping the neighborhood one beer at a time. Having a beer with buddies after a long day of work is what many people look forward to. There’s a camaraderie that’s created, especially when it’s over fresh, locally brewed beer. “I think beer and community go together, that’s sort of a lot about what beer is,” said Casey Motes of Eureka Heights Brew Co, 941 W. 18th St. With one of the first buildings in the U.S. was public house, Motes joked that the founding families built a church then realized they needed a pub. “I think there’s always been some of that [community] around beer especially. When you get together a lot of Texas brewery traditions, [you see] big open houses on Saturdays where everyone floods in and you’re all crammed next to each other trying some local beer,” said Motes. Some of the excitement behind breweries and local beer is that the beer lover can see where and how the beer is made. Eureka is at home in a large, open warehouse, giving any customer the opportunity to see the machines they use while sipping on a beer that was made from them. Supporting local business is another big part of why local breweries are becoming so popular. Aside from great quality beer, the money being put in is going toward the local economy. And in general, beer has a lower alcohol level compared to other alcohols, making it more approachable to the consumer. “We really wanted to focus on lower alcohol, accessible beers because that’s what we like to drink. We like to sit and have a couple pints after work and you can still be productive after,”

Contributed photo Eureka Heights Brew Co. linked up with the Roller Derby for the Art Car Parade. That’s just one of the ways that breweries are partnerinng up in the community.

said Motes, “So, we really wanted to bring that part of the community of getting together, and just kind of hanging out over a pint and talking.” “The social aspect of beer is what makes it fun, and so keeping that in mind and making these lower alcohol, but still really flavorful, really in-

teresting beers,” said Motes, “We try to keep in mind what the community around us really wants and what are they going to drink. It usually lines up with what we are because most of our staff live in this area.” They reach out into the community to get involved as well by hosting

events with other local organizations, creating a dynamic space of locals supporting locals. Just last week the Arboretum joined Eureka for a trivia night and part of the proceeds went to the Arboretum, and they also were able to set up and talk about what they were doing.

A favorite for Motes to partner up with is the roller derby. “They’re all about this big community as well and it’s just this unique, fun thing for people to go watch,” said Motes, “So, they wanted to partSee Local Brew P. 7B

Adventures in home brewing Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com So you like beer and you’re thinking about brewing some yourself. Basically, beer brewing follows a four step process – preparation, brewing, fermenting and bottling – before you can partake of your labors. If you’re on the fence about embarking on this hobby, the best thing to do – according to Paul Smith, who is the ‘Grand Wazoo’ of the Foam Rangers Homebrew Club based in southwest Houston – is to find your tribe. “Find a good homebrew supply shop,” he said. “A lot of them have affiliated homebrew clubs. Each one has its own personality. Get involved in competitions too where you judge and evaluate beers.” Luckily for people in Northwest Houston, there’s a nearby resource in the Farm Boy Brew Shop, located at 3814 N Shepherd Dr. Owner Landon Weiershausen just

Typical beer making is a multi-step process. Home brew kits make it easier for hobbyists, but dedication to process is still essential to the outcome.

opened a second location in Katy. Surprisingly, Weiershausen says there’s a bit of a dip in the homebrew market because they economy is doing so well. “People don’t have as much time for hobbies,” he said. But for those who do have the time and the inclination, Farm Boy’s deluxe kit can be a good start. They also sell a simple recipe kit and ingredients separately. A pot is not part of the package because this is the south and “most people have a gumbo or crab pot.” Weiershausen actually got his start in homebrewing with a kit he got on the sale rack at Bed, Bath & Beyond. “I made beer, but I knew there was a better way,” said Weiershausen. He notes that ten years ago when he got started You Tube was not the teacher that it is now, and that his biggest mistake was that he bought stuff he didn’t need. “Make sure you like it as a hobby,” he counsels. “Start slow.” He also says that it’s important to choose the right recipe and a beer that you

like to drink – perhaps one that is grain light and not as dependent on temperature. Beers with a higher alcohol content have more ingredients and are therefore more expensive. Weiershausen calls the extract kits he sells, which are preassembled, his Betty Crocker kits because they are easy and require less steps. Even so, not sanitizing properly can even mess that up. “Ninety percent of beer making is cleanliness and sanitation,” he said. “Any kind of infection will ruin a batch of beer.” Once a brewer graduates to all grain brewing, Weiershausen says the safety net gets pulled out from under you. Grand Wazoo Smith notes that failure to control the temperature during fermentation is one of the biggest mistakes for newer brewers. “If the temperature is too high or too low, it will throw off the flavors,” said Smith. The outside of Great Heights Brewing Company, that hit one year in business in August.

By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com After opening just a few days before Hurricane Harvey, Great Heights Brewing Company has become a neighborhood favorite after a year in business. Co-founders Patrick Christian and Sean Bednarz are just two big beer nerds. After staying friends since fifth grade, they started working on the idea of opening a brewery in 2015. They opened in August 2017. “We went on a camping trip, road trip together in Colorado in like the summer of 2015 and stopped at a bunch of breweries. We just started talking, like what if, is this something we could do, is it something we would want to do. When we got back we decided to devote some time and energy into research,” Christian said. Bednarz had been homebrewing for quite some time and considered the idea of opening a brewery years before. So, some of the leg work of research was already done. Having grown up in the Oak Forest, Garden Oaks area, they knew they wanted to open in the area. They found the perfect place on Wakefield, smack in the middle of the neighborhood. And when Hurricane Harvey hit, they were able to open the doors and provide a space that had internet and television for those who were

without. Being able to be a center for activity during the days after Harvey endeared the brewery to the neighborhood. Christian and Bednarz were able to introduce their selves to the locals under unfortunate circumstances, but it showed that they were willing to be a good neighbor. “We were open during that time because people were coming by knocking on our door because there was nothing to do. There was nowhere to go outside of the neighborhood,” Bednarz said, “We opened every day that we could, and people were coming over and happy to have a place to sit down and have a beer. I think everyone was going stir crazy at that point.” While a couple of years ago there were breweries around Houston, the neighborhood centered brewery is becoming popular. This was the inspiration behind Great Heights Brewing. They wanted a brewery in the middle of a neighborhood that would be designed to specifically serve the area. One of Great Heights Brewing’s most popular beers according to the locals is Fruiter Pellets. “There’s a style called the New England IPA that’s popular in other parts of the country,” Bednarz said, “When we opened, we opened with a beer called Fruity Pellets, that was a New England IPA… Fruity Pellets grew into Fruiter

Pellets, which is just a bigger, hoppier, more flavorful, and aromatic version of Fruity Pellets.” For this beer there’s a larger dry hop schedule and higher alcohol content. The beer itself is very smooth, easy drinking for an IPA. It has a lot of fruit and citrus character, and unlike traditional IPAs, it doesn’t have the bitterness. That’s what makes it a beer for beer nerds and beer novices. “It’s an approachable style. It’s an IPA by name,” Christian said, “but a lot of people who think they don’t like IPA, we’ll have them try it and they love it.” Denali is another popular beer they have on tap. It’s more the flagship, traditional IPA. It’s dry, bitter and everything the Fruiter Pellets isn’t. “The last couple of months we put some darker beers in aging barrels,” Bedbarz said, “so down the road when they’ve aged a little bit, we’ll release some barrel-aged stuff.” By using the barrels to age the beer it adds a woody, earthy, and bourbon character to the beer. It also adds a little to the alcohol volume. Next month on November 17, Great Heights Brewing is throwing their first anniversary party. They’ll have live music, new beer launches, and free entry. For now, check out their eleven beers on tap at 938 Wakefield Dr.

Art Valet Arts District Month continues with Art Inside Out Mitch Cohen Art Columnist

Saturday afternoon is a unique opportunity to meet a handful of established, award-winning fine artists at Art Inside Out, an invitational exhibition hosted by glass artist Bill Meeks, at his studio in the Sawyer Yards area. Host Bill Meek is an accomplished glass sculptor with a 40-year career and creating unique glass art that has earned him collectors throughout Texas and around the world. The invited artists joining Meek in the exhibition are painter/sculptor Kelley Devine, painter Karen Eisele, artist/ sculptor Dan Havel, mixed media artist Anne Reese Hernandez, artist/photographer Syd Moen, wood sculpture James D. Phillips, painter David Piland, mixed media painter/sculpture Page Piland, and photographer Gary Watson. On the bandstand, rhythm and blues band Texas Johnny Boy will perform 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Meek Studio & Gallery is located at 1903 Spring St. 77007 and www. meekgallery.com. For weekend three of Arts District Month, I pulled a few events from their suggestions listed on their website. For lunch, the Arts District suggests a perfect burger at Stanton City Bites. I concur Stanton’s has one of the best hamburgers I’ve ever eaten! 1420 Edwards St. It’s Sculpture Month Houston, and the Arts District suggests you set your sights on the unique art installations at the main SITE gallery exhibit where you can expect a thought-provoking glimpse into the Peak Shift psychological phenomenon - multiplied renderings

of an original object. I was able to make the opening last Saturday, and these site installations are mesmerizing. The artists design and install their exhibits in a round room, in the silos, there is a cone-shaped ceiling with an opening in the center to release the now non-existent grain. Regular open hours- 12 - 6 p.m.,

Weds-Sat 1502 Sawyer St. Next, continue viewing a cross-section of international sculpture at more than 40 participating venues including Art Inside Out at Meek Studio and TANK Space at Spring Street Studios. There is an opening at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Hobby Airport Saturday evening too that I’d like to check out. Page Piland “Not a Knothole,” assemblage.

to miss this weekend. First, The Texas Art Asylum presents “Remember You Will Die – A Memento Mori” show. Rising to popularity in the 17th century, this type of artwork reminds us of our mortality and the shortness and fragility of life. In modern terms, it may be referred to as living your best life, or YOLO (you only live once) in bro-speak. Show hours: Saturday, 4 - 8 p.m. and Sunday, 1 - 5 p.m. Sunday’s event includes Artist Jodi Larson demonstrating Victorian Hair Work, or mourning jewelry, created from the hair of a loved one. Texas Art Asylum, 1719 Live Oak, Houston, Texas 77003 Hardy & Nance Studios presents the Nightmares II Art Show that coincides with their Third Saturday Open Studios 5 - 9 p.m. Hardy & Nance Studios are located in Houston’s original, historic warehouse district at 902 Hardy Street, Houston, TX 77020. For a map & more info., www.hardyandnancestudios.com Cohen is an artist and founder of First Saturday Arts Market and the Market at Sawyer Yards, find him at ArtValet.com.

Local Brew from P. 1B ner up and do some fundraisers [at Eureka], and we were a part of their art car in the art car parade.” After being blown away by the response to their first food truck festival, Eureka will be hosting their second food truck festival in a few weeks. They’ve made sure that each truck has something to offer that’s under five dollars. Town in City Brewing Company, 1125 W. Cavalcade St., also finds ways to be a central station in the neighborhood. “For us, we’re a little special. We have five historic neighborhoods surrounding us, and so particularly for us we always try to be active in each of the neighborhood civic associations,” said Justin Engle of Town in City. Breweries and pubs have been seen as central to the community in other parts of the US and world. They were the first ones to have information and posters of other things going in the neighborhood. “In Houston it’s starting to come along that the breweries have become neighborhood information center, or neighborhood gathering centers,” said Engle. This push towards breweries becoming a staple in

Casey Motes of Eureka Heights Brew Co.

Justin Engle of Town in City Brewing Company.

community togetherness is propelled by more and more breweries opening. Just a few years ago it would be possible to count breweries inside the loop on one hand, now you need a few. “Houston’s been more focused toward local, which you don’t typically see in big cities, and so it really makes Houston feel like a close-knit neighborhood, even though it takes an hour to drive across the city with no traffic,” said Engle. When visitors from the suburbs venture into town to visit the brewery, locals will quickly take them under their wing and tell them all the cool local spots they must try. Town in City even keeps paper behind the bar because locals frequently draw a map of the neighborhood with all the must see or taste stops. “Having that local knowledge, people willing to talk to strangers is kind of cool. And I think it really shows that breweries are becoming the neighborhood centers,” said Engle, “and it helps disseminate information out.” Breweries are also family friendly, creating a space where anyone can feel comfortable. It also means their reach is wider, which adds to the flow of neighborhood information and community.

Homebrew from P. 1B Sometimes, you might not get a beer at all. “Someone once told me that it all wants to be beer,” said Weiershausen. “But we have to control it to get it there.” Bottling too soon – and other pressure mishaps – were other blunders that readers shared. “When my husband was first brewing, he bottled too soon and the beer built up too much carbonation in the bottles and they all exploded,” Amy Shaughnessy said. “The bottoms of the bottles blew off. The real problem was that he was storing the bottles in his closet.” Andrew Laabs went on vacation and returned to a beer soaked towel that the fermenter was sitting on as

the beer had been so vigorous it came out the blow off tube. Robb Bunge has an even more volatile vacation story. “I left it to ferment in the bathroom while I was away,” said Bunge. “When I came home, hops were covering everything - the ceiling, the walls, the counters. I mean everything. The hops must have plugged the vent, so the pressure built up in the carboy and blew out the stopper and the hops. And so my first batch of ‘Hop Explosion’ IPA was born.” Of course, part of the fun is sharing stories – and the beer that turns out well. “Homebrewing has a big social component,” said Smith. “It’s a good time.”

When Hattie Belle Pugh passed away last January at the age of 99, her family knew how they wanted to honor her. Pugh had been the school secretary at Oak Forest Elementary from 1958 to 1978 and had also been an active volunteer at the school, including serving as PTA Presi-

dent, for many years. “She absolutely loved that work,” said her son Billie Pugh. After a conversation with the school, the idea of a bench donation for the school’s arboretum took shape and in Pugh’s obituary, donations were encouraged for the purpose. Through the generosity of friends and loved ones, the bench became a reality. Bergen Designs in Colorado

created a red rock bench that memorialized her, even including a carved owl because Pugh collected them. Present at the installation were her son Billie Ray Pugh, Jr., MD with his wife Paula of Fort Worth, childhood friend Don Haley, as well as Oak Forest Elementary Principal Andrew Casler and Vice Principal Rachel Folse. On hand, too, was Oak Forest parent Leah Salinas who

had the good fortune of moving next to Pugh a few years ago and getting to know her. “I’m glad I got to be there and glad I remembered tissues,” said Salinas. “We even convinced her son, Billie to sing the Oak Forest school song written by Hattie Belle and sang by kids for years. I miss her. Every day. I’m glad to have a special spot to remind us of her.”
