Beating the boredom during the holiday season By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If you are a parent of a school age child, no doubt you’ve been enjoying the family time. It’s also possible that your kids are driving you a little nuts. You want to get out of the house but don’t want to go too far or pay too much to entertain them. Leader readers chimed in on their best ways to beat boredom.

AREA SPECIALIST

Kill two birds with one stone Is it an errand or is it an adventure? It can be both. At Mister Car Wash, 640 W Crosstimbers St., there’s free popcorn for the kids (and you too) as well as a mounted water gun that they can use to help “wash” the cars as they come down the line. Be mindful though - not every customer wants the extra service. At IKEA, 7810 Katy Fwy., there’s Smaland to occupy your children while you shop. What’s Smaland? Why it’s the free supervised play area that IKEA offers. Deal breakers are non-potty trained children and those who are shorter than 37 inches and taller than 54 inches. Hours: Mon-Fri: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sat and Sun, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Other contenders are the play area at Memorial City Mall. Tania Prontka suggests making your holiday returns on the

Heights builders focusing on new ‘luxury’ offerings

Pizza, gifts and Old Saint Nick himself awaited dozens of families in need last week at St. James Lutheran Church on West 43rd Street as the Ministry Assistance of the Near Northwest Alliance celebrated Christmas a bit earlier than usual. Executive director Patricia Dornak said the Christmas event on Dec. 22 was a first for the organization and would likely not be the last. Nearly 100 people, identified by MANNA and the church as being in need or disadvantaged, visited the church and received large bags of gifts and complimentary pizza and refreshments. Santa himself also sat at the front of the room and met with children as they posed for pictures with their families, enjoyed candy and received bags filled with toys donated from members of the community. They organizations and neighbors like Justin Gordon and various other business in The Leader area. Dornak said the event was a great way to cap off 2015. “We really need to be giving back more to our community and giving these kids a good Christmas is part of that,” Dornak said. “This is the finale of the year for us at MANNA. A lot of these families don’t have much of a Christmas and we wanted to do something special.” For volunteer opportunities, donation information and more visit www.manna-houston.org.

It’s no secret that the Heights has been a hot market for real estate. While builders continue to make tightly laid out townhome communities, the area has also continued attracted players looking to differentiate themselves from the competition, and much of that all comes down to one term – “luxury.” Perhaps the biggest luxury among many moving into the Heights is space. While some developments sacrifice space to maximize the number of lots available to consumers, Partners in Building is taking a much different route with the design of its Fountain Park community on West 26th Street, which is expected to have homes available in early 2016. The design of the community, which boasts large greenspaces and – a shocker to some in the Heights – room for parking, represents a shift in what local buyers want to see, says vice president of marketing Paul Womack. “We did a lot of preliminary work with focus groups in designing [Fountain Park] and finding out what was important to them,” Womack said. “Less density was one of the things that came up frequently.” Rather than rows of townhomes, Womack said the development is designed more like a gated community while still boasting space for a mixture of over 50 townhomes and cottages which, according to the website, are priced from the $600,000 range. Residents will be able to walk their dogs, enjoy an esplanade complete with a large fountain and floral arrangements and dedicated parking for homeowners and guests alike. Features like balconies and greenspaces allow developers like Partners in Building to attract those looking for luxury housing without the luxury pricing, Womack said. The Heights has remained a “strong area” for development and families and young professionals have continued migrating into the area. Other developers are noticing too. More recently, a new, 35-story condominium project is headed to the Greater Heights area, according to a report by the Houston Business Journal. According to the report, Fabian Trujillo, a luxury home realtor with Keller Williams Metropolitan, is working with See Luxury P. 2A

Luxury from P. 1A Trulia, median listing prices for a large portion of the Heights is just under $400,000 with the Woodland Heights area boasting a median listing price of about $550,000. However, the Houston Association of Realtors also released its monthly numbers in early December, saying that home sales have fallen for a second straight month in November and also pulled the average price down with them. Townhome and condominium sales also dropped 10.3 percent with the average price down 9.3 percent and a 15.2 percent decrease in the median price, according to the report. While worries about the impact of the oil crunch and job losses have loomed over the outlook for the Houston real estate market, Womack said the economy has diversified extensively since the 80s when the oil market took a huge turn for the worse. “We have a lot of entrepreneurs, doctors and other professionals not related to the oil industry,” Womakc said. “There is still heavy demand for homes with luxury features that aren’t over the top.”

Boredom from P. 1A house in the late 1960s and now it is festooned with flattened beer cans, bottle caps, bottles, and other beer odds and ends. It’s open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. and costs $5 per person. My favorite quote about the house comes from Marilyn Oshman, the art patron who founded the Orange Show (also worth a visit at 2402 Munger St. in Southwest Houston) who told the New York Times that “one good thing about not having any zoning is you can do stuff.” Although it’s further afield, Discovery Green has a must see, interactive, free exhibit. “Los Trompos, or ‘the spinning tops,’ will be showcased on the park’s Sarofim Picnic Lawn… the colorful, large-scale, temporary installation, which take their form from the common toy, will delight park visitors of all ages.” I watched a group of kids entertain themselves for three hours on Los Trompos and they could have kept going. Kat Creech and Tonia Whitney suggest tacking on a visit to the Hilton Americas-Houston next door to see the 1.5 ton, 7 million calorie chocolate statues, including Santa and Olaf, on display in the lobby. Want something easy and close? Jennifer Rodriguez said her family likes to do the Flip Kits at the library. “If you complete the survey you get a family 4 pass for the Children’s Mu-

seum,” she said. “Great freebie if you aren’t members.” The great outdoors Sure, Donovan Park in the Heights is a favorite of kids, but for a new experience, visit the Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play Area and Picnic Pavilion which is part of Buffalo Bayou Park’s new offerings. Features include a boulder rock scramble, a rolling lawn, a stream and waterfall, climbing logs and stones, and a 33-foot slide. They got a $1 million grant from the Ray C. Fish Foundation to build it so you would come. Nearby is the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark, a 30,000square-foot in-ground facility overlooking Buffalo Bayou. You don’t have to be an expert to take advantage but helmets are of course required. Other ideas? Candice Croker suggests playing a game of Frisbee golf at TC Jester Park. And Carrie Consolvo said that she and her kids went geocaching in the neighborhood a few years ago. “It was so fun,” she said. “We rode our bikes to find the hidden treasures and then filled the box for the next geocacher. It was really memorable.” Tonia Whitney said you can download the main Geocaching app on iTunes, and that there are “tons of caches hidden in our area.” Is there something you’ve done that you’d like to share with readers? One constant in a changing neighborhood

I

often think that people should have their obituaries and accompanying tributes printed while they are still living. Who doesn’t want to know how much they’ve meant to their friends and loved ones? So in that spirit, I wanted to tell you a little bit about Mr. Sam Salvato, our neighbor in Candlelight Estates since we moved here in 2004. And I’m hoping Mr. Sam reads his Leader this week. People have a lot of opinions about the transformation of our neighborhood. Some bemoan the newer houses that are replacing the smaller ones. The bigger name restaurants and shops that will displace mom and pop stores. Or the increased traffic, or the loss of collective memory that enables everybody to remember where Patsy Swayze used to have her dance studio or where the Reagan Bulldogs used to go for a burger after the big game. I get it. When I went to the park weekdays with my first born, a majority of the other children there were with their mom or dad too. When I went to park with my second child, she came home telling me she wanted a nanny like everyone else. I explained that I was her nanny. Things were changing fast,

even in the short time we’d been here. The differences must seem huge to those who’ve been here the longest. Mr. Sam, as my kids call him, is one of those people who moved to the neighborhood with his wife and two daughters in the 1970s. I think I met him on the first day when I had to run down the street at 8 a.m. and knock on doors to ask people to move their cars so the moving truck could access our driveway. But I remember getting to know him most sitting in the front yard talking. He was completely welcoming from the start. Sam told us all about the neighbors and the neighborhood. There was one other “young”

couple on the street and we both started having children at the same time. We spent a whole lot more time in our yards then, learning about Mr. Sam and his beloved wife Betty, who made baby hats and blankets for us. Sam was raised near Bryan and during his military service was stationed in Korea. Later he worked as a sales manager and a vice-president in his business, selling supplies to grocery and convenience stores. This explains all the wonders in his garage. Seriously, there is almost nothing he can’t produce on a moment’s notice. Post-retirement, he and Betty travelled all over the country with friends. For a quick trip, they were partial to Coushatta. After some health issues, he got serious about fitness and you would often see him walking, or on his bike. At first we knew him as the unofficial mayor of our street. Sam knew absolutely everybody. When a strange car came by after dark, he was at his front window, or at the door. My kids perked up whenever they saw him and tottered over to say hello. More couples moved to the street. There were more babies. In 2008, after almost 50 years of marriage, Betty died. As Sam would

tell you, she was his great love and he still misses her dearly, taking out regular memorial advertisements in The Leader and elsewhere. It would have been understandable if he had retreated from us all, but thankfully he didn’t. He is still a regular fixture on his lawn and chats up whoever else comes by or seeks him out. He was

Time to ring in the predictions’ predicaments for the new year It is time to ring in 2016 with joy and anticipation. OK, maybe fear and trepidation. Either way, we now make our annual predictions. To refresh your memory, last year I was 100 percent correct: A great person died, a plane crashed and a movie won the Oscar. True, peace did not come to the Middle East, despite the plans and expectations of the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld team. We must give their strategy more time. Enron did not come back, nor did Wendy Davis. Anyway, stand by while I say the sooth for 2016. Clip this column, put it on your refrigerator door, make sure it won’t fall off, and we’ll get together next January for a celebration of our brilliance based on this knowledge. January –Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sues the Obama administration for “attempting to interfere with states’ rights by allowing our opponents to vote.” Rick Perry announces he is back in the race for President. No one notices. UT students demand the Student Union stop using Dixie Cups. A total eclipse blocks out the sun. Newt Gingrich blames “the elite liberal media.” Congress approves the Home Howitzer Bill. It cost the NRA a fortune. A customer at Sam’s speaks English. The Iraqi Army flees in a rout after discovering that attacking ISIS forces have a gun. February -- Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin exchange Valentines. Super Bowl begins in Houston with a sixhour pregame warn-up, then a film on, “Concussions Are for Wussies.” The half-time show features the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Aida, and a re-enactment of the Battle of San Jacinto. Following the two-hour post-game show, a panel discusses the day’s best TV commercials. The game itself is called off due to lack of time. my daughter’s no-brainer choice for a play date on her third birthday. He’s been to Grandparents Day and to my son’s First Communion. He makes a mean grilled sausage and fries, which he’s happy to share with whoever hasn’t made dinner that night. My neighbor recently asked him to come car shopping as Sam is a shrewd negotiator. His daughters Debi and Charlene have embraced us all too. They say we all helped their dad through a tough time, but there’s no way we could repay everything he does for us. For almost 10 years now he’s watched all the kids grow up on this street. First steps, first words, first time without training wheels. Things keep changing. The Dyes left first. The Walkowskis moved to Massachusetts, the Leals moved to Canada and thankfully came back, the Rasmussens went abroad, and the Bermans, to Sugarland. But Sam is a constant. He just turned 85 and said he’s started thinking about what his memorial service might be like. Nobody’s ready for that yet. That’s why we want to tell him way ahead of time that he’s what makes this street special, and we wouldn’t trade him for the world.

New research has found obesity and inďƒ&#x;ammation have a direct and complex relationship that effects overall health. The more weight pets and people gain, the more our joints hurt, we become less active and gain more weight. New research also conďƒžrms the best treatment to reverse this vicious cycle remains eating correctly and gradually becoming more active. Dogs love to walk and play, people need encouragement. Too often resolutions and unreachable exercise goals lead to disappointment. A pleasant walk with an enthusiastic partner can warm your heart and reverse the aging process. Compliance is easy. A daily walk will give you purpose to get up, go outdoors and make someone else happy. That wagging tail is a natural anti-depressant. Even though walking will increase longevity and stave off disease, there are risks. Be aware of these when and where you walk. Also an annual health exam is essential for everyone. Dogs can acquire diseases and parasites along the trail. They must be properly vaccinated and given prescription parasite preventive monthly. Also, be responsible and scoop the poop with plastic bags. Houston’s climate and crowded population provide a haven for parasites and contagious disease. So hit the trail today. Plan ahead and make it a fun routine you can’t miss. It will add years to your life while adding life to your years.

emergency measures Chase Baker, D.D.S. estorations (fillings, crowns, bridges, etc.) have a way of R breaking or getting lost at the most inconvenient times ... like over the holidays when there’s no time to see your

dentist. The only long lasting repair is that which is made by your dentist, but here are a few emergency measures. If a filling falls out or a tooth breaks, it has to be replaced by the dentist. You can ease some of the discomfort by rinsing with luke-warm water and then placing a piece of cotton soaked in oil of cloves into the cavity. Your local pharmacy should also have temporary dental filling material that is very inexpensive and can hold you off until you can be seen by the dentist. If a crown or a bridge come off, don’t try putting it back on with commercial glue. Ideally, the crown needs to be placed back in so that the tooth doesn’t begin to move which would prevent the crown from fitting back on. Vaseline or denture cream can hold it in place temporarily until you can get in to see your dentist. Don’t try to repair a broken denture yourself. It could damage both the appliance and the tissue against which it rests. A broken denture or fractured denture tooth is a real emergency and can be repaired quickly by the dentist. Prepared as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office of: Chase Baker, D.D.S., 3515 Ella Blvd., 713-682-4406.

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

Is someone WatchIng over Us?

H

ave you ever experienced the feeling that someone was watching you, even when you knew you were alone, or at least physically alone? Sometimes this feeling can be overwhelmingly powerful, and might even suggest to us that there is some other dimension that we are only partially attuned to. On the day that my grandfather died I had a very strong feeling of his presence, even before I received the news of his death, and in the days and weeks following his death many of my family members expressed similar experiences. This is a fairly common experience, and even atheists and agnostics will sometimes admit that they have had similar experiences, despite not believing in an afterlife. Sometimes this experience of someone being present with us extends to God, and in fact there are those who say that they experience God’s presence on a daily basis. This is a powerful experience and a source of great comfort. We should try to keep the idea and the feeling with us that we are not alone, that God is always with us and that He loves and watches over us. We should return our love to God and try to live a godly life.

Thirsty Explorer

By Mitch Cohen

Arts Columnist

Who knew flowers could be so sexy? Happy New Year! I always view the New Year as a new beginning, a second chance or the opportunity to try something new. As 2015 came to a close, I was very happy to give many artists a shot at participating in my monthly outdoor art market, First Saturday Arts Market. For many it’s new experience and new things can be challenging, intimidating and exciting. For one artist, it’s a return to the past. I met artist Iwona Jankowski when we were both trying new things in 2004. For me it was the art market, for Jankowski, it was two painting concepts she called “Sexy Flowers” and “Mottled Horses”.I can easily remember Jankowski’s big paintings of colorful “Sexy Flowers” - the name is hard to forget. It was Jankowski’s abstracted images of horses that I absolutely loved. To my surprise and excitement, Jankowski has decided to give the art market another go and will be there this Saturday. Where do you live and what is your background? I am a visual artist living and working in my home studio in Magnolia, Texas. I was born in Poland, where I graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Gdynia, Poland. I’ve continued my education at Houston Community College toward Computer Science / Graphics Major. My art passion, education, experience, and professional carrier in graphic art helped me to broaden my art skills, and to identify as well as develop my own means of artistic expressions. My first works of art as a small child depicted horses. Drawing them, I thought I could feel every muscle of the horse I drew. It was

Also, it helps me to effectively use visuals to depict a story about my subject. My art captures just an indication of a subject to leave the rest for my viewer’s imagination to create the unique picture.

A snap shot of Jankowski with her art works.

When did you become a full-time artist? In 2004, after many years of encouragement from my husband, I made a tough decision to walk away from my graphic artist job to pursue a full time career in fine art. Creating art is my means of communication and sharing my experiences and feelings. It’s a medium to tell a story, help me to relax, and let me leap to my another inner world – world of my imagination.

far from perfect but the feeling remains. Even today, after many years, my favorite subject is horses. For me, the horse, beside the beautiful gracious body, is a symbol of a free soul, loyalty and trust. I’m especially fascinated by their eyes. An eye, as old people say, is a window to a soul. Tell us more about your painting series. My “Sexy Flowers” and “Mottled Horses” series were developed since 2003 in my Mottled style that merges abstract and expressionism with a touch of realism. The subject is created on a colorful abstract background to express mood, often shown as a close-up, with special attention to eyes and focusing on specific feelings and composition. I often include secondary transparent images to show movement or a specific scenario. In my paintings, I don’t intend to replicate photo-realistic objects, but to capture the utmost uniqueness of life. Illustrating my subjects, I often pay no attention to exact shapes, textures, or real colors and emphasize just on a small fragment, sometimes a very tiny detail, in order to insinuate an idea. That approach leads me to concentrate on what I feel and not what I see or know about the subject.

In our Food & Drink issue in December, we got on our soap box to talk about transportation on New Year’s Eve and getting a safe ride home. There’s all kinds of transportation options, some more convenient than others, some also more expensive than others. The popular vote has leaned towards Uber, with its easy accessibility, all from your phone. In order to compete with the competition, Yellow Cab also offers a phone application for accessibility. Both compete in prices; both price base on time, distance and demand. For the big night on New Year’s Eve, both will be in high demand and you can expect to pay a pretty price for rides between 12 a.m. - 3 a.m. From a personal experience last year, a cab from Nightingale Room to Garden Oaks was far less expensive than the Uber was to get downtown before the party started. One option to highly consider, one that I will be using myself, METRO will be offering free rides on New Year’s Eve that will begin at 6 p.m. and end 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Visit www.ridemetro.org to see where you can grab a free ride to your destination. Now that I know how I’m getting downtown this year, the only question I’m asking for this year’s plans - “what am I going to wear?” I’ve had my plans locked in for some time, with The Suffers announcing their NYE concert at the House of Blues earlier this year. Just this week, The Suffers - a local 10-piece soul band from - made Billboard’s “10 Rock / Alternative Albums to Get You Amped For 2016” list; just to give them some credentials. This concert will sell out. Call Cactus Music to see if tickets are still available for purchase at (713) 526 – 9272 and visit www.thesuffers. com for tickets. Doors for the show will open at 8 p.m., Dec. 31, at The House of Blues at 1204 Caroline St. 77002. Bring your dancing shoes. Paul Wall, Lil Keke, Big Pokey New Year’s Eve Bash Something more in the neighborhood, but still on the Houston music front, Fitzgerald’s will be hosting Paul Wall, Lil Keke and Big Pokey from 6 p.m. - 2 a.m., Dec. 31, at Fitzgerald’s - 2706 White Oak Dr. 77007. Earlier this month, Lil Keke was featured on a Houston album that played homage to the late Pimp C, “Long Live The Pimp”. You just might hear Lil Keke drop a few lines from the album Thursday night. Grab tickets at www. t i c ke t f ly. c o m / p u r c h a s e / event/1025721 James Bond New Year’s Eve Theme Party Another party that is closer to the neighborhood and one that is sure to bring a crowd, Hughes Hangar will host their big party from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m., Dec. 31, at 2811 Washington Ave. 77007. This celebration will immerse you in an “Old Hollywood” James Bond theme with red carpet, three “007” themed rooms, multiple DJ’s, professional photography, aerialists, signature cocktails, and much more. Let Go 2015: A New Year’s Eve Masquerade The good ol’ faithful Walter’s Downtown will be hosting a masquerade themed ball with musical performances and comedy from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m., Dec. 31, at 1120 Naylor St. 77002. You can grab limited advance tickets for $12 or $18 at the door. Wear a mask for a discount at the door when buying tickets the day of. Doors will open at 8 p.m. with the music starting at 9 p.m. Hau’oli Makahiki Hou with the Beachcomber The tiki torches are coming out for the party on NYE at Lei Low, another in the neighborhood option. Starting at 4 p.m., Lei Low will transform their

little paradise into Don the Beachcomber’s Original 1934 hideaway in Hollywood. Enjoy a special menu of Donn’s Original Rhum Rhapsodies and the Colonel’s original garnishes and ice sculptures. Aloha e Mahalo! The party will go until 2 a.m., Dec. 31, located at 6412 N Main St. 77009. New Year’s Eve at the Nightingale Room: The Red Party The downtown bar is painting the town (and the bar!) red at The Nightingale Room, and are encouraging guests to don their favorite red party attire, as well. Each guest will receive a complimentary Masquerade Mask to add a little red-hot mystery, along with a complimentary champagne toast and a balloon drop at midnight. The party will start at 4 p.m. - 2 a.m., Dec. 31, at 308 Main St. 77002. Does the government care what Fido is up to?

Dear Tabby, My vet keeps trying to sell me on microchipping my dog. I’m concerned that it’s a plot by the government to track me. Is that really necessary, or just another way for the vet to make money and for the government to keep tabs on me? Paranoid in Shepard Park

Dear Paranoid, I can assure you that (in this case) your vet has only your pet’s best interests in mind (and the government couldn’t care less about what your dog is up to). With growing technology in the veterinary field, new measures of protection for companion animals are now available to owners at a low cost. Microchipping, one of the newest ways to locate and identify lost animals, is growing in popularity and efficiency. A microchip is a glass encased device that bears an identification number unique to every marked animal. Once the microchip is inserted under the animal’s skin and registered with the devices company, the microchip can be activated with a scanner at

a veterinarian’s office or local animal shelter. With no batteries or power source required to activate a microchip, this device will provide a permanent identity for your pet that will last their entire lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, a microchip can’t track your pet-it’s merely an internal source of identification. Many owners protect and identify their pet with a personalized collar. While this method can certainly help identify your pet, there are many strong advantages in microchipping your animal. For instance, pet collars may fall or slip off, and personalized tags may become unreadable after several years. Microchips do not face any of these challenges and have no chance of being removed, no matter where Fido wanders off to. Dr. James Barr, Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explains the biggest advantage microchipping has over other methods of identifying animals, “The biggest advantage is that a microchip can’t be lost. It allows access to detailed information about the pet and its owner with a quick phone call to the company,” he said. Barr also adds that most microchips can be installed at veterinarian offices and sometimes even spay and neuter clinics. He further explains that the process of installing a microchip is very quick and does not hurt the animal, contrary to what some owners might believe. Microchips, which are about the size of a grain of rice, can be installed into dogs, cats,

Pet of the week Meet Pinkie. Pinkie is a

horses, ferrets, and most other mammals. Finally, do not forget to register your chip to your name and phone number. If you move to another address or change phone numbers, you will be required to update this information with your microchip’s company. A microchip will only bring your pet home if your contact information is kept up to date. Although personalized collars have been traditionally used as a method of identification in pets, microchipping is on the rise of becoming the modern solution for lost animals. Even if your pet has been microchipped, providing a collar for your pet is still important for providing quick and easy identification. So, put your fears to rest: The government has “bigger fish to fry” right now than monitoring the whereabouts of your dog. But, rest easy knowing that if your dog gets lost, with a microchip, he has a much better chance of making his way home.. Do you have a burning query for Tabby? If so, email her at deartabbyquestions@gmail. Ad # 36774 com.
