Giving never gets old

Tis better to give than receive for local residents By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com For Garden Oaks’ Lynda Spinks and Shepherd Park Plaza’s Dennis Woodward, it is truly better to give than to receive – a saying borne out by researchers at the London School of Economics who examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness in a large group of American adults. According to them, the odds of being “very happy” rose 7 percent among those who volunteer monthly and 12 percent for people who volunteer every two to four weeks. Among weekly volunteers, 16 percent felt very happy—a hike in happiness comparable to having an income of $75,000 to $100,000 versus $20,000, say the researchers. Spinks, who retired from Stevens Elementary in 2008 after 36 years there, wanted to keep busy. After a trip to Colorado to admire the fall foliage, she started volunteering at First Baptist Church and also joined a retired teachers group which provides books for a chosen school each year. After Christmas of that year, she got a call from a former co-worker asking if she could volunteer to help fourth graders with math tutoring. Spinks said yes. “I taught fourth grade all my years except one,” said Spinks. “It’s a delightful age.” Spinks said that she loves getting to teach and not have to deal with disci-

pline issues, do paperwork or attend meetings. She also likes a smaller ratio, noting that when she was at Stevens at one time there were 1,200 kids, and no state mandated 22-1 ratio. Teachers hoped for 30 but could end up teaching 35-40 kids. “It really keeps me in the loop with what is going on,” she said. “I like to keep up with HISD and thoroughly enjoy seeing staff and teachers. I’ll do it as long as my co-worker needs me.” Dennis Woodward, who is a retired middle school teacher, is quick to tell you that he’s not retired. Roberts Tax Appeals is the company that he runs. Wife Colleen Roberts is the company’s senior property tax consultant and son Robin recently acquired his property tax consultant license. Their hard work, and the seasonal nature of the business, allows Woodward to indulge his other passion – volunteering. At Stevens, he puts in quite a bit of time in their garden, adding both hardy plants to create habitats, as well as those that attract hummingbirds and butterflies and also some citrus and vegetables. “I’m there to create an opportunity to for kids to learn,” he said. “Nothing could be sweeter than [introducing] kids to it. I need more native plants grown by local gardeners so as to increase the amount of habitat without costing much money. If locals grow them, then they are almost certain to be the plants I need.”

That’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as Woodward’s volunteering goes. He’s the volunteer league director for the Houston Flying Disc Society which is the governing body for the league. He built and maintains The Little Free Library in Shepherd Park which he says can always use high quality board books, early readers, and wonderful children’s literature. When it gets low, he visits MANNA and garage sales to stock it out of his own pocket. This fall, Woodward has also been busy with Interfaith Ministries-Refugee Services, helping families from Burma, Kenya, Iraq, Iran and Syria get registered for school. He drives to southwest Houston where many of the families live and takes them to their zoned school to sort out all the paperwork. He’s transported a group of mentally disabled people to church each week, signaling out one sports fan to take to Texans games. He’s volunteered at the Houston Area Women’s Center and driven out to the hotels by the Astrodome during Hurricane Katrina to bring home displaced Louisianans to stay with his family. He credits his mother, who used to care for AIDS victims, for his need to constantly give back – as well as the tragic murder of a pregnant woman he witnessed over 20 years ago. “There’s so much pain and suffering in the world,” Woodward said. “I want to look at something beautiful and give others the chance to do so too.”

As Carolyn Moore sits at her desk, the keys on her keyboard click-clacking away, one would have no idea that she was working a position - originally intended to be a temporary assignment - for more than 16 years. Neither would one get the sense that lifelong Heights resident Paul Coons, along with John Knox Church members Jonna and Dave Whatley are waiting out life’s hourglass. Moore, 76, is one of The Leader’s own sales representatives, a position she has held for more than a decade. Coons is a lifelong athlete who still pole vaults in the Senior Olympics in his early 70s, while the Whatleys (both in their 80s) maintain a weekly regimen of making time to hit the links and shoot a few rounds of golf. Right or wrong, today’s perception of the “senior citizen” is one of sitting in a nursing home or around their home or apartment simply waiting out life; but these seniors are among many defying such a stereotype. Tips for downsizing for retirement could be the will, DNR’s, birth certificate, copies of Medicaire, Medicaid and more to make it easier on the people who will have to take over this duty, whether it be the executor, power of attorney, your guardian, etc. It remains vital for all the possible need-to-know people to have the information, she said, should something befall the original executor. “The list could go on and on, she said. “It sounds complicated, and it is complicated. With the process addtionally having the ability to become muddled due to any of life’s natural perils, Kirten stressed that no time is too soon to begin such a process. By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As one reaches the age of retirement and beyond, many questions may run through your mind. “What will I do every day? How will I sustain my normal habits? However, one thought tends to not dawn until it is almost too late—what to do with a lifetime of “stuff which has accumulated. One reader recently reached such a crossroads within her own family, and sought to share some tips and precautions for the older population (and in some cases the caretakers) to consider. “Organize all your paperwork and belongings and make sure that the people who have the need-to-know information, have all that they need, Eva Kirten advised. “It

herself or her business when her husband passed, leaving it up to the family to sift through and make sense of all the documents while enduring the natural grieving process. “You need to have all this done and make these life decisions today, said Cookie, whom Kirten said has been a key partner in the process. “That’s a hard pill for people to swallow, but we have to take charge of our lives and make those types of decisions. Once the plan is in place, the process of actually depleting some of the clutter begins. “We’re trying to keep everyone in mind, wanting to make sure they got what belonged to them, Kirten said. “You were trying to make sure you were being sensitive and

getting everyone what you thought they would want. Though within her family, offered keepsakes were often accepted, Kirten emphasized the importance of determining that sooner rather than later should family members have no desire to collect the keepsakes, she suggested a living estate sale in order to expedite the process,. “They wrap up everything and take care of everything, and it is worth it, she said. Kirten said her own mother actually began this whole process before the full effects of age set in, which is vital. “She did have a will and a trust set up for my brother with special needs, so she had made a lot of these decisions beforehand, she said. “That was great, and extremely important.

Page 4B • Saturday, September 24, 2016 Stigmas from P. 1B together the night before for what I have to do the next day. It just keeps me busy, and I find that’s good because I’m occupied and I enjoy what I’m doing.â€? For Coons, his purpose and calling was never in doubt from the moment he could first pick up a ball or any athletic instrument. “There never was a time when you got away from sports and then picked it up again 10 years later,â€? he said. “It’s been a part of my DNA since I was born.â€? And it does not appear the 72-year-old is planning to quit anytime soon. As soon as Coons hit the half-century mark, he discovered the Senior Olympics, soon coaxing his father into joining the endeavor. The

former Reagan (now Heights) High School pole vaulter saw the sport as simply as an extension of the passion he had possessed since an early age, and said age has rarely crossed the precipice of his mind. “Staying active as you age does not serve to drive Coons in his purview—competing was in his DNA, therefore Senior Olympics provided that avenue. “I compete because it’s what I’ve done all my life. I love getting better and improving, and if I happen to get a gold medal or trophy that’s an added plus, he said. A common thread connected all three active residents—a healthy body, mind and soul as well as giving themselves a purpose and a

reason to get up in the morning. “It (staying active) gets you up out of a chair and keeps you from being a vegetable, Whatley said. “It keeps your mind active, and although I still have the moments, it keeps you active because you’re interacting with people and doing something besides watching TV—that’s something that can really keep you going. Coons echoed Whatley, adding that too many simply live out their days striving to live longer—instead of just living.

“It just improves your overall quality of life—your energy, it keeps your mind fresh and alert, he said. “The years you live should be of great quality and energy. I can’t encourage people enough to get involved and sweat a little bit and stress how that benefits anyone. “It’s just a matter of having a reason to get up in the morning and have a life, Moore said. “Once you sit down and figure there’s nothing else for you to contribute to, unless you find another mission, you’re going to be complacent.

The priceless gift of older pets

By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader

BaMBoo clothing & athletic wear

According to a recent NBC News report, Americans will spend $60 billion on their pets this year. And despite the recent recession, the spending has continued to climb each year since 2000. Why? Because more and more Americans are recognizing the value pets bring to the human experience. It’s from this same perspective that authorities are now recognizing the health benefits pets offer seniors. According to ScienceDaily.com, the gains a cat or dog can offer the life of an aging adult are numerous, and cannot be overstated. For example, pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression. Seniors with pets tend to have lower blood pressure, and one study determined that when a senior adopted a pet, his or her blood pressure declined significantly within months. This fact has not escaped Houston’s animal rescue community. Most local public and private shelters, as well our many pet rescue groups, understand and try to match older pets with older people as a result. “Both senior people and senior pets have seen a lot in their lifetimes and both appreciate the simple pleasures,” explained Melinda Gleghorn, founder of the Animal Justice League, a homeless pet rescue group dedicated to the near

north side of Houston. “What a senior dogs need more than anything is love, a soft place to rest, and leisurely strolls. These qualities often fit well into the needs of an older person too.” Science agrees with Gleghorn. The demands of walking a dog offers seniors exercise, and the act of regularly feeding a cat or cleaning a litter box, offers the comfort of routine. As as a result, studies have proven that pet owners who have suffered a heart attack survive longer than those without pets – sometimes by years. However, as anyone who loves an animal knows, their greatest gift comes in the form of companionship and affection. So many American seniors suffer from loneliness that the love of a pet can be a life-saver. “Unfortunately, there are many people who don’t seem to appreciate senior people. Pets appreciate their owners and give them a sense of contributing to the happiness of another living creature. The rewards are limitless for both the person and the pet,” Gleghorn

concluded. “While younger folks want kittens and puppies, we try to steer older adults to older animals,” stated Ashtyn Rivet, director of communications for the city of Houston’s animal shelter, the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care, or BARC. “Puppies and kittens are active, get underfoot, and are high maintenance. Seniors often don’t need that kind of stress in their lives but most older animals have outgrown all that.” Rivet explained that BARC has a special program for people 60 years old or older. Any pet at the shelter over the age of two is available for adoption for free. Each animal is fully vetted, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped. However, there is simply no dollar amount one can assign the love of a dog, or affection of a cat. Older animals may be free for seniors at BARC, but they are a priceless addition to all our lives. Since 1895, Historic Hollywood Cemetery has been a place to go to remember and to place a flower. Today, it remains a place to honor a special life and a place for your family, friends and future generations to visit and pay tribute. We know that we live in an ever-changing world and that we cannot ignore the future. Industry experts predict that half of U.S. consumers will choose cremation by 2018, and half of those families do not plan for placement of one’s cremated remains.

What are you doing today to create new heritage and memorialization for this new and evolving tradition? Historic Hollywood Cemetery recognizes these changes and is currently in the process of creating new memorial options for cremation families in addition to the traditional burial options currently offered. The Chapel of Peace Columbarium is the development stage for the interior of the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, which will provide an inside, climate-controlled environment featuring beautiful bronze glass front niches. Additionally, plans are underway to develop an outdoor

cremation memorial garden specifically for cremation memorialization. While we honor and cherish the memory of the past, we are committed to providing options that move families to memorialization. Planning ahead not only ensures that your personal wishes are known, it is also one of the greatest gifts you can give to the people you love. Historic Hollywood Cemetery will forever be a place of solace and peace within our community. You are welcome to visit at any time, and we look forward to serving our community for the next 125 years.

Reducing medication mismanagement For The Leader Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for

the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time.

Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips. • Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any

new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize. • Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management.

The costs of filling prescriptions is simply too big to bear for many people, even now that the Affordable Care Act has greatly reduced the amount of people who are uninsured. A survey from the Commonwealth Fund found that 35 million people in America failed to fill a prescription in 2014 because of the cost of the medication. Though people who cannot

afford to fill their prescriptions often feel helpless, there are a handful of ways they can cut the costs of their medications and start feeling better. • Discuss changes with your physician. Perhaps the simplest way to cut prescription costs is to discuss medication options with your physician. • Consider Patient Assistance Programs. Sometimes referred to as “Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs,” Patient Assistance Programs, or PAPs,

can greatly reduce the burden of prescription drug costs. • Consult your member organizations. If you are a member of the AAA automotive group or the American Association of Retired Persons, you might be eligible for medication discount

cards free of charge. • Contact charitable organizations. Some charitable organizations, such as the National Organization for Rare Disorders and maybe even some local nonprofits, offer prescription assistance.

Hi! I’m Tony May

Come see me for all your home insurance needs homeowners insurance is a crucial part of owning and protecting a home.

That’s why the The May Group LLC has worked so diligently to understand the insurance priorities of homeowners and their residential properties in the Memorial, Greater Heights, Garden Oaks, Timbergrove, Oak Forest and Shepherd Park areas. In fact, the exact location of your home may mean your home’s risk profile is slightly different from that of your Houston neighbors’ right down the street. No matter the specifics, we have coverage that’s right for your Houston home, and our agents can help further personalize your homeowner’s policy.

how so? Beyond the location, the property itself often has very different kinds of

assets that can be protected through home insurance coverage. The structure and dwelling coverage are the backbone of most policies, but The May Group LLC offers plenty of additional coverage options through Nationwide. These options cover things like a detached garage or other buildings, contents and valuables, or even a number of exclusive coverage programs like Better Roof Replacement®. Plus, if the time ever comes when one or more of our homeowners need to return a home to its former glory, the Nationwide On Your Side® Claims Service offers extra peace of mind.

TOMOSYNTHESIS

IS A WORD YOU NEED TO

KNOW

The Breast Care Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights now offers 3-D mammograms, the latest in early breast cancer detection. Breast tomosynthesis is an innovative, FDA-approved digital technology that helps your physician detect smaller tumors sooner – at the earliest stages of breast cancer. The Breast Care Center at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital has been granted full re-accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), one of only three centers with this accreditation in Greater Houston. Schedule your 3-D mammogram online today.
