Neighborhood bar, eatery hosts Texas talent Troubadour Tuesdays hosted at Cottonwood By Christina Martinez Christina@theleadernews.com
Cottonwood’s Chief Operating Officer, Jake Rainey, talks music with his daughter often. When a song comes on, he’ll mention to her when and where he was when that specific song created a memory for him. Those types of memories and experiences are exactly what he said he is trying to create for other people with some of the acts that play on the patio at Cottonwood. Since opening in October 2012, Rainey and his team have brought in live talent with a goal to provide the neighborhood with a variety of different acts, focusing on Texas-based bands. “We’ve got everything from Wrenfro, which is a relatively new project from Tony Scalzo of Fastball and Kevin McKinney from Soulhat, to Deadeye - a Grateful Dead cover band - to Hard Luck Revival, an up-and-coming Houston act,” Rainey said. One specific show, held
the second Tuesday of every month, eight months of the year, is Troubadour Tuesdays - a free concert held at Cottonwood that showcases noted Texas talent. The concert series was founded in 2008 by Rick Heysquierdo, host of The Lone Star Jukebox on KPFT 90.1 FM.
If you go
The entrance to Cottonwood is off of North Shepherd Drive. An entrance is no longer available off of 34th Street.
“It’s all about supporting locals and getting people to see these musicians,” Rick Heysquierdo said. “Me – I’m a 401 K kind of guy. I can’t do what these musicians do, and I can’t do without them and their music. It’s about giving love to these musicians.” This month, Cottonwood is shaking things up a bit and
hosting a second Troubadour Tuesdays from 5:30–9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27 on the patio. Rainey said the opportunity arose to bring Texas favorite Jesse Dayton, so they’ll be hosting two shows this month and are excited to bring Dayton. The headliner for the show will be Dayton, with Houston’s own Hard Luck Revival, opening for him. Known for his guitar shredding, Dayton has played alongside legends like Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Willie Nelson and Glen Campbell. Dayton formed his own label in 2002, and began his most prolific recording period: five solo records, one duet record, one live record, as well as two soundtrack recordings for rocker/director Rob Zombie. Dayton also has his hands in acting, writing, directing and producing. Opening for the jack-ofall-trades, Hard Luck Revival describes themselves as “a garage country band hailing from Houston, Texas; a mix

of country, rock, Gulf Coast blues, Rockabilly, and a dash of punk.” The Houston natives will go on at 5:30 p.m. When it comes to bringing music and making memories at Cottonwood, Rainey said he and Rick Heysquierdo are
committed to making Troubadour Tuesdays one of the best events in the city. “Rick’s a pretty big character,” Rainey said. “If you haven’t heard his show on KPFT on Saturday mornings, you need to check it out

Patios for Pooches By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com It’s not just you who enjoys a little fun and libation on an outdoor patio when the weather gets nice. Your pooch wants in on the action. And at the following reader-nominated spots, both you and your four-legged companion will find something to love. Cottonwood, 3422 N Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77018 Many readers mentioned Cottonwood as a place that’s dog friendly. Manager Dave Minda said that they have water stations and paper bowls placed on the ground so dogs don’t get dehydrated. Dogs are welcome on all uncovered patio areas – Minda says if they need shade there are plenty of umbrellas on the uncovered part. There’s a park next door that’s connected to Cottonwood and Minda says that the extra green space gives dogs a chance to stretch their legs. And if you want to give Rover a birthday party? Minda says they’ve done them before. Henderson Heights Pub, 908 Henderson St, Hous-

Houston Vintage Festival founded by Heights residents, returns I fell in love with the Houston Vintage Festival a few years ago, right after founder Dawn Bell asked me to be a judge of their Ms. Houston Vintage Fashion show in 2012. I was hooked. So, last year I joined the team. What a wild, fun ride it is too. Not only do Bell and her partners, Diana Candida and Maria Martinez, work superbly well together, they really know how to throw a party. All three are Heights residents, so, obviously, they have good taste. “Houston Vintage was started out of my love of fashion and vintage fashion,” Bell explains. “I’ve always had a real passion for vintage. I’ve loved it since I was a kid, and I have been collecting since I was 14 years old. Vintage fashion is timeless, any runway today, at any fashion week, can be replicated through vintage. This is how the idea for the first Houston Vintage came about. We had a modern fashion show with all vintage clothes. Why wear a runway copy when you can wear the original?” After the first year, Diana Candida and Maria Martinez, then business partners of a vintage fashion boutique, approached Bell about expanding. Candida and Martinez wanted to promote their business and find vintage-focused events. “It was Dawn’s first Houston Vintage fashion show that really gelled the idea for who we could do a festival with ... and Dawn was super enthused when I proposed the idea as she’d been wanting to put on a festival, but needed a team to do it with,” Diana Candida

said. Martinez was just as enthusiastic. “I was so happy that someone was doing something like this, so creative, underground and outside the box, very different from the usual runway show,” Martinez said of the first Houston Vintage. “It was more of an homage to style, fabulous pieces and the overall feeling of vintage chic. That’s all it took for me... I was hooked! I think Houston Vintage has tethered the community together, once a year bringing this wild, unique, fun and amazingly styled group of people together. ” Founder Dawn Bell said her favorite part of the event has always been the Day Market on Saturday. “That’s where you can see the culmination of all our hard work, and really immerse yourself in vintage. The main event (there are activities all week) kicks off Friday evening, Sept. 16, with a 70’s revival themed preview party and fashion show at 10 p.m. coordinated by Omar Lisandro and Dick Clark of the fashion group STRUT. There are vintage exhibi-
Petrol Station, 985 Wakefield Dr, Houston, TX 77018 A neighborhood favorite is now dog friendly. The Petrol Station recently got the city permit for dogs. They say they offer water and have a lot of patio space. Common Bond, 1706 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006 Loren Allardyce with Common Bond Café says that dogs are definitely welcome on their small patio and they are city permitted to allow them on the patio with the regular rules and regulations the city requires. “We gathered the permit more as a courtesy for our guests walking the Montrose area with their dogs who want to stop and enjoy a coffee with their pooch,” she said, noting that another restaurant under their umbrella, Mia’s, is also dog-friendly: “That patio is large and the staff has been known to bring out water bowls.”

By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader When Renée Reed moved from River Oaks to the east of downtown, it proved to be an eye-opening experience. The young professional soon found that she had befriended a number of homeless cats. Then, last spring, her homeless cats brought Reed their kittens; the numbers doubled. “That is when I knew it was to time to do something about it,” Reed explained. In early summer, the professional Certified Public Account took her first step into an entrepreneurial pursuit and launched a one-month Kickstarter campaign to fund El Gato Coffeehouse. By the month’s end, her campaign met its $40,000 goal. And what exactly is El Gato Coffeehouse? It will be only the second “cat cafe” in Texas (the first, the Blue Cat Cafe, is in Austin) and the fifth in the US. El Gato will feature baked goods, coffees, teas, Wifi, and live adoptable cats wondering freely. The entrepreneur has yet to sign a lease on a location. She found one in Rice Village, but the rent is so high, it’s costprohibitive. Now, her friends have introduced her to the Heights and near north as an alternative. “It’s such an interesting area, it would be great for El Gato. It’s a natural fit,” Reed said. Working with the Houston Humane Society, all of El Gato’s cats will be spayed and neutered, and available for adoption. The staff will be trained to handle adoption applications to insure the cats go to good homes. Reed has two options for the cafe’s design. The first would require 1,000 square feet inside, and room outside for a patio and food truck to handle the coffee and baked goods. “This would be the option that would take the least time, and meet city permitting requirements of a separate food space from the cats,” she said. The second option is considerably more complicated. As there are currently no “cat cafe regulations” in Houston because there are no cat cafes, Reed is using the paradigm of Austin, applying all the permitting hoops in that city. “In Austin, there is a threedoor rule. There needs to be three service doors between the food preparation area and the cats. Additionally, no water that is provided the cats, could come from the kitchen,” Reed explained. Dawn Rubin has been active in Houston’s animal rescue community for years, and she is delighted to hear this news. Rubin has been to two cat cafes in Europe and understands the value of the experience. “The first time I went, it was in the morning and it

In 1941, Jose Jesus Becerra Valencia, also known as Cyclone Anaya, embarked on his wrestling career, getting noticed in his home country Quitupan, Jalisco, Mexico - the champion of Mexico. Valencia eventually chased his career to Chicago and within a few years was featured across a TV network where his career took off. Valencia collected hardware in world titles, junior championship recognition, and regional titles. His career eventually came to a close with retirement in 1960, and a ‘For Lease’ sign on North Durham peaked his interest for a family business. “My dad was driving by and saw a little bar for lease and wanted to buy it,” Vienna Valencia Bement, co-owner of Cyclone Anaya’s Mexican restaurant said. Bement recalls the initial business starting as just a bar. Eventually her mother started getting in the kitchen and putting out hot plates so people wouldn’t get too over-oiled. Cheese enchiladas were the bar favorite, with bowls of chili and tacos following behind. The lease eventually ended on the property, with new ten-

Area schools prepare for district play By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Just three games in, the high school football season is already a quarter of the way through. For many of The Leader teams, the season has not started out as they would have liked, but as they enter district, there is still time to make some changes and improve. Heights Bulldogs After finishing the 2015 season with just two losses, the newly named Heights High School Bulldogs have struggled out of the gate and have matched last season’s loss total in just two games. For the first time since 2014, the Bulldogs have back-to-back losses but should find solace in the fact that they played two strong opponents in Crosby and Clear Creek High Schools. They lost 25-6 to Crosby, who is ranked 61st in the entire state, according to MaxPreps. A week later, they took a close 17-16 loss to Clear Creek, who is ranked 111th. The Bulldogs have one more game before they enter district, where the wins and losses really start to matter. They open district against Math, Science & Tech High School, whom they beat 56-8 last season. Although the score won’t likely be as high for the Bulldogs, the team should walk away with the victory. Lutheran High North Lions The Lions started the season with a 39-8 statement win over KIPP Northeast High School before dropping their next two. Unfortunately for LHN, the team’s losses have come in district. On the bright side, the team’s remaining games are all district games since they play in a 10-team conference. They are also one of four teams without a win in district and should be able to capitalize off of the other three. Only three teams make the playoffs, so the Lions are going to have to rely on Legacy Christian Academy and Cypress Christian School to lose a few games since those teams would own a tiebreaker over LHN. If the Lions hope to make the playoffs, they will need more from their backfield throughout the season.
Scarborough Spartans The Spartans have lost their first three games by a combined margin of 95-14. All three games have been against non-district opponents though, so Scarborough can still turn it around and try to make the playoffs. Last season, they were able to make the playoffs due to how small their district was, but they’ve moved into a slightly bigger district this season, which will cut down the number of teams that qualify for the playoffs. Perennial powerhouse, North Forest High School, has also dropped its first three games, so when the teams meet on Sept. 30, the Spartans should have a better idea of where they stand. Either way, Scarborough is good enough that they will have a shot of winning their first district game since 2007. St. Pius X Panthers The Panthers are undefeated and have outscored their opponents by a 146-36 margin. Since they only play in a four-team district, they will have plenty of practice before their first conference game against Concordia Lutheran High School on Oct. 21. The Panthers are ranked 91st in the state and will face their biggest challenge when they take on Levelland High School, who is ranked 142nd. SPX is getting it done behind one of the best quarterbacks in the city in sophomore Grant Gunnell. So far this season, Gunnell has thrown for 1,262 yards and 16 touchdowns, while posting a 139.2 quarterback rating. St. Thomas Eagles After winning their first game of the season, the Eagles have dropped their last two. The last loss came against the no. 26 team in the state, College Station High School. Those two losses account for 40 percent of head coach Tim Fitzpatrick’s all-time regular season loss total. Like St. Pius, the Eagles will have many opportunities to work on their deficiencies before heading into district play. The time in between will also give sophomore quarterback Peyton Matocha a chance to gain more experience playing at
the varsity level. The Eagles have the toughest remaining schedule out of all the Leader teams, as they play West Brook High School and Episcopal High School, who are ranked 197th and 21st. They end the regular season against St. Pius who will more than likely be ranked higher than their current standing. Waltrip Rams The Rams lost their first two games of the season before bouncing back and winning their last game against Sterling High School to start 1-0 in district. Waltrip plays conference games from here on out. Last season’s district winner, North Forest, is no longer a member, so the race for the title is wide open. Madison and Sharpstown finished ahead of the Rams last season and Waltrip will play both teams in back-toback weeks. The Rams have experience on both sides of the ball, which should benefit them down the stretch.
