If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on with your memory – or your lack of it – just know there’s a scientific explanation going on. A 2015 study in Psychological Science reported that working memory, which is the ability to hold on to facts like phone numbers and addresses for a short period of time, reaches its high point at age 25. Yes, 25. You get to hold on to what you’ve got until age 35, and then working memory starts declining. The silver lining, according to experts, is that long-term memory stays intact for much longer. Even so, as Helpguide.org explains, the hippocampus, or the region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, often deteriorates with age. Also, older people often experience decreased blood flow to the brain, which can impair memory and lead to changes in cognitive skills. The good news, shared by Oak Forest’s Alexis Eaton who also happens to work at the Alzheimer’s Association, Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter, is that there are steps we can all take to reduce the risk for cognitive decline. What follows are some of the 10 Ways to Love Your Brain. Break a sweat This is probably a no brainer but doing exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body is good for your body and your brain. Hit the books Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Reader Denisse Ojeda says she’s always known that learning new things increases your brain plasticity. “I’m a crazy learner, I’ve taught myself to be left handed and to wear my watch on my right hand and when my brain gets used to that I switch,” she said. “I speak three languages and recently taught myself
Butt out Did you know that quitting smoking can reduce your risk for cognitive decline to levels comparable to those who have not smoked? Now, you do. So quit. Follow your heart Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health. Just start with walking. According to Harvard
Medical School walking for 2.5 hours a week—that’s just 21 minutes a day—can cut your risk of heart disease by 30 percent. Fuel up right This is another no-brainer but eating a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit will help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Movement as medicine By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Neuromuscular Therapist Carol Welch-Baril described movement as medicine and I think that’s a pretty good way to look at it. Of course how people move changes as we get older. Nancy Greig is in her mid 60s and answered my question about her marathon running from Quebec, where she’s currently on a cycling tour. “I do run the Houston half marathon every year,” she said. “Back in the late ‘90s I ran three marathons - but the last one was no fun so I just do halves now. I am just more careful now - I don’t train as hard and back off at the first sign of injury or pain. I want to be able to keep running as long as possible. Also, it’s a big social thing for me now. I always run with friends.” For those wanting to be active, the National Institute on Aging names four basic categories of exercise and physical activity — endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. The goal is to do something from each of the categories to get the most benefit and help you do all the fun things you want to do. Endurance This refers to aerobic activities which increase your breathing and heart rate. Building your endurance makes it easier to carry out many of your everyday activities. Endurance exercises include: · Brisk walking or jogging · Yard work (mowing, raking, digging) · Dancing Strength Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. These exercises also are called

Stump yourself Challenge and activate your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic. Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have short and long-term benefits for your brain. Oak Forest artist Johnny Rojas brings blank paper and several pencils to Memorial City Mall. “In the food court area there’s a carousel/merry-goround,” he said. “The challenge is to draw a certain object on the carousel. As the carousel is running, I pick a certain object, a horse or details on a special ornament. Then I’ll try to draw it. I have five times in three minutes that I will see the object as it passes by. In doing this challenge, the object can be just the face of a horse, not the whole horse. The goal is to see the details as they pass and try to draw them. Not the big picture.”

Support for senior caregivers is helpful For The Leader At some point in a son or daughter’s life, the role of caregiver may shift. Where parents once took care of their children, aging parents very frequently rely on their children to care for them. Adult caregivers typically want to do right by their aging loved ones but sometimes find that the demands of medical and emotional support can dominate their lives - so much so that their own children and other household responsibilities are neglected. The Mayo Clinic says it is natural to feel sad, alone, frustrated, and even angry when serving as a caregiver to an elderly parent. However, it’s also important to recognize the signs that the
burden has become too much and to look for ways to lighten the workload. Anyone can get caregiver stress, but the National Alliance for Caregiving says women are more susceptible than men. Those who are responsible for helping someone with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or a debilitating illness are also at a high risk of developing their own medical issues. These responsibilities can affect the quality of caregivers’ sleep and impede their ability to relax and unwind. Finding relief from caregiver stress can involve a few different strategies. Flexibility exercises include: · Shoulder and upper arm stretch · Calf stretch · Yoga Power up How you fuel your body for exercise also should be finetuned as you age. “Athletes over the age of 65 should be conscious of their hydration,” said Houston Registered Dietitian and Wellness Coach Catherine Kruppa. “Aging is accompanied by reduced thirst and increased excretion of water by the kidney, which ultimately
lead to a state of dehydration. You should make sure that you drink enough so that your urine is light lemonade or clear colored.” Kruppa also says that experts suggest that older athletes take in additional protein. “The recommendation is 0.55–0.64 grams protein per pound of body weight (1.2– 1.4 grams per kg) daily, which happens to be the protein recommendation for younger endurance athletes,” she said. “Pairing extra protein with strength training exercise can slow or possibly even help prevent the loss of muscle mass that occurs with age.”

Methods to treating arthritic knees For The Leader Osteoarthritis of the joints can affect people of all ages, but is one of the leading causes of disability in the aged population in the United States. A study published in the Caspian Journal of Internal Medicine found incidence of knee OA is rising by increasing average age of the general population. Age, weight, trauma, and repetitive movements are common risk factors for the condition. According to Dr. Scott Paris of Central Jersey Spine and Wellness, more than 27 million people in the country suffer from knee arthritis. An estimated 37 percent of Canadians aged 20 or older who had been diagnosed with arthritis reported osteoarthritis, with 29 percent occurring in the knees, states Statistics Canada. Knee arthritis occurs when there is a degeneration of articular cartilage that covers and protects the patella (knee cap) at the knee joint, offers the online resource Arthritis-Health. Since this cartilage has no nerve endings, some people can experience arthritis but feel no pain. However, pain may occur when doing specific activities that cause impact between bones, like jumping, walking up stairs or certain sports. Over time, knee arthritis may become worse, and pain can be accompanied by stiffness and loss of mobility. This may be accompanied by knee locking or buckling. Those who suffer from knee OA may seek treatment. In 2014, the Osteoarthritis Research Society International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting osteoarthritis research and treatment, updated its recommendations for the treatment of osteoarthritis targeted to different patient characteristics. The main categories of treatment include non-drug treatments, medication, injections, and surgery. Non-drug treatments: Examples of non-drug

treatments include exercise, stretching and range-ofmovement strategies. Weight loss can alleviate excess strain placed on the hips and knees and reduce pain. Braces, sleeves and orthotics may help reduce pain and joint stiffness when directed properly through a specialist. Medications: Many medications are geared around reducing inflammation and pain and include over-the-counter pain relievers and NSAIDs, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium. Topical NSAIDs may be tried, and these can reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects from oral medications. OARSI also found that the antidepressant duloxetine may help with chronic knee pain.

Reclaim Your Mobility Contributed photo Arthritic knees can be treated through exercise or stretching, or with a variety of medications such as over-the-counter medicines, injections, or surgeries.
Injections: The Arthritis Foundation says that some doctors can inject corticosteroid compounds directly into affected joints. Use of hyaluronic acid injections can supplement the natural substance that gives joint fluid its lubrication and viscosity. These injections may help relieve pain and improve mobility. Surgery: In cases when the aforementioned treatments are unsuccessful, doctors may suggest surgery. The Arthritis Foundation says joint lavage and arthroscopic debridement, which involve flushing the joint with a sterile saline solution and the surgical removal of tissue fragments from the joint, are controversial but may help some people achieve short-term relief. Partial knee replacement may be another option that offers a similar improvement in function, but fewer complications than a total knee replacement. Osteoarthritis in the knee can be painful and restrictive. Working with a qualified doctor, individuals can develop a treatment plan that works for their specific conditions.

Caregivers from P. 1B help. If other family members or siblings are unable to pitch in, look into the possibility of hired aides. These professionals can be excellent and trained sources of support who assist with activities of daily living, remind patients to take their medications and assist in coordinating medical checkups. Consider watchdog technology. Smart homes have enabled remote control of many household systems, making it possible to monitor thermostat temperature, water leaks or floods, appliance and light usage, and much more. Video and sound surveillance can offer peace of mind to those who cannot be with their loved ones constantly. Another option is a product called Care Coach. This is a digital tool that provides medicine reminders, health coaching, automated alerts, and an interactive avatar that can offer psychological and comforting support. Explore respite care. Many rehabilitation and nursing facilities offer shortterm respite care for loved

ones so that caregivers can take the time to go on vacation or enjoy a day or two without having to check in on an elderly parent. Facilities generally have 24-hour staff to monitor residents, provide meals and provide entertainment. The change of pace can also be stimulating to the senior, and respite care can be a gradual introduction to longterm care. Embrace community resources. Seniors may be eligible for low- or no-cost services like visiting nurses, meal delivery and adult day programs. This network of support can further alleviate caregiver stress. Talk it out. Work with a licensed therapist to find other coping strategies for dealing with the mounting pressure of being a caregiver. Talk therapy and relaxation techniques can help curb stress. Being a caregiver is a rewarding but demanding responsibility. Utilizing all possible resources can make the job easier.

Local primary care clinic and medical spa opening soon By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Foyé MD and Spa is bringing primary care and a medical spa to North Shepherd Drive. They aim to take wellness to a new level by combining body health and aesthetic beauty. “We are the first and only medical spa to come to the Garden Oaks area,” said Dr. Foyé Ikyaator, owner of Foyé MD and Spa, “Our goal is to add to the value of the community and residents by providing affordable and medically advanced care.” Dr. Foyé Ikyaator developed a passion for primary care after working full-time in emergency rooms across Houston. Many of the patients coming into the emergency room didn’t have a primary care doctor, and therefore didn’t have access to preventative care. She also knows that an important part of primary care is the patient feeling comfortable with the doctor who is treating them, which is why Dr. Ikyaator has assembled a medical team who both are relatable and have years of experience in their field. The focus of the wellness clinic will be to treat the patient all around, not just the disease, but from prevention to diagnosis and treatment. They are dedicated to providing the patient with personalized care to help them feel the best they can inside and out. The clinic will offer adult care services such as: routine exams, pre-operative and post-operative clearance exams, treatment and management of chronic conditions, weight management, and nutrition counseling. For women’s health, they’ll offer breast and pelvic exams, PAP smears, birth control, and bone density test ordering. They will also have pediatric care available with wellness exams for children five and up, urgent care for minor illnesses and injuries, and physicals. Services will also be provided for orthopedics, dermatology, and more. “We have the experience, and our staff is very compassionate,” said Dr. Ikyaator, “we follow up with our patients because we really care about their well-being.” In the medical spa, the providers have over thirty-five years of combined experience in medicine and aesthetics and will perform aesthetic procedures in a relaxed spa environment. These treatments are non-surgical and minimally invasive to give benefits beyond the products behind a store counter.
www.foyemdandspa.com 832-930-1705 Specialty services for both men and women include anti-aging treatments, skin therapies such as PRP and micro-needling, and laser and injectable treatments such as laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, and Botox and dermal fillers. All patients will have complimentary consultations and evaluations to help them find the best services for their desired outcomes and budget. One of their highlighted services, the weight loss clinic, will be supervised by both a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, and the medical director. Services will include medically-controlled programs, supervised weight management programs, and behavioral nutrition counseling to help patients build a healthy diet and routine that best fits their needs and lifestyle. But the most important factor in weight loss is maintaining the goal weight.
“Our focus is educating people on how to eat,” said Dr. Ikyaator, “we want to help patients learn how to manage their weight and their health for a lifetime and not cause them to fall into the unhealthy yo-yo dieting trap. The ultimate goal is for our patients to not ‘need’ a diet program ever again.” In addition to the weight loss clinic, the medspa will feature the FDA approved body contouring technology, SculpSure. This noninvasive laser permanently eliminates stubborn fat resulting in a more natural look, less pain, and in half the time of Coolsculpting. It’s perfect for men and women with problem areas despite diet and exercising regularly. The med spa also offers the Vampire Facial (also known as the PRP facial), made famous by Kim Kardashian. The service involves taking a small amount of the patient’s blood, filtering for
Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP), and applying it to their face topically and transdermally. It is coupled with microneedling for simultaneous collagen production. This allows the patient to naturally produce healthy, youthful, and glowing skin. For the primary care and wellness clinic most insurance is accepted, and FSA/ HSA may cover some treatments in the medspa, depending on the individual’s plan. Financing will be available as well. Foyé MD and Spa will be opening mid-October at 3800 N. Shepherd Dr. For an appointment visit their website at http://www.foyemdandspa.com or call 832-930-1705.

For The Leader Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on

Charles ernest Cernik
C
9/26/16 11:21 AM
harles Ernest Cernik was a native Texan and life-long resident of Houston’s Oak Forest neighborhood. He was born in Houston on December 5, 1924 to Sophie B. Kase and Frank Cernik. He passed away on September 7, 2018. Charles lived in northwest Houston and graduated in 1942 from Ball High School in Galveston, Texas. He entered the service on February 5, 1943. He served in the Army Air Force in the European theater of WWII. During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals. He flew as a radio operator on a B-24 Liberator Bomber as part of the “Carpetbagger’s mission. He parachuted from a crippled Bomber over France and was held as a POW in Germany for one year. He received an Honorable Discharge for his service in 1945. The GI Bill allowed Charles to attend Rice University and graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1950. He married Evelyn E. Petersen of Galveston on June 30, 1951. They were married almost 60 years until her death in 2009. He was a Master Electrician in the City of Houston, a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Registered Professional Engineer for the State of Texas. He was employed by Brown & Root/Halliburton for thirty-four years. Charles was the Lead Electrical Engineer on many industrial installations throughout the world including the initial phase of the NASA Johnson Space Center. When he retired in 1987, he was the Manager of the Electrical and Instrumentation department. Charles was an active volunteer in the Oak Forest neighborhood and Houston throughout his adult life and received many awards for his hours of service. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He was a very active member of the Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital from 1989 to 2014. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1956. He was very active and served in various capacities including assistant minister, user, teller, and the church council and many other committees. Charles was also a member of the President’s Council for Lutheran Social Services. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, crafts, reading and cooking. A special craft that he loved was pysanka eggs _ a tribute to his engineer skills and attention to detail. He is survived in his immediate family by his daughter Carolyn Cernik Weaver of Las Vegas and his son Charles Curtis Cernik of Yuma Arizona and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his child Cheryl Elaine, his parents and his five brothers and sisters. In lieu of flowers, we request donation to St. James Lutheran Church in Houston, Lutheran Social Services or your favorite charity. Services will be held at Resthaven Chapel, (13102 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77060) on Saturday September 29 at 10 a.m. with graveside service to immediately follow.
