Rehabilitation specialists work one-onone with each child to incorporate physical balance, gait training, feeding techniques, functional living, integrated play and spasticity management, as appropriate. Keenly aware that pediatric patients have different therapeutic

needs than adults, Adair said the clinic’s programs purposely incorporate play to make therapy fun and keep patients motivated. In addition, the equipment in the pediatric clinic is designed to fit the physical requirements of young patients. See Pediatric rehab P. 2B

A malnourished child is an under-educated child By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader About 14 months ago, The Leader brought you news of a small nonprofit agency doing big things near the corner of Antoine Drive and 34th Street. At the time, the operation was serving 5,000 of Houston’s at-risk children free, healthy, nutritious suppers a day. This year, that number has increased to 10,000 kids a day in Houston alone, and 5,000 more, state-wide. The agency, called Be A Champion Inc., or BAC, continues to rise to the challenge of ending childhood hunger in Texas. It’s a mammoth undertaking involving many people, massive food preparation, refrigeration, delivery, site distribution, and management, but it is essential to the future of our community. “Our most important goal is to offer, healthy, balanced meals to our children through our Champion Fuel

LEADERS IN QUALITY

Program,” said Be a Champion’s Chief Executive Officer and CoFounder, Jaron Barganier. “In addition to being hungry, a large number of our children are not getting sufficient nutrition in their diets. Over time, our kids become malnourished, and that has a negative impact on their ability to learn. A malnourished child, is an under-educated child.” The nonprofit’s founder explained that 80 percent of Houston Independent School District’s children qualify for free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches. After school, these same kids return to homes where parents are often at work. Hungry, the children make themselves suppers such as freeze-dried soup, microwaved pizza, or walk to a fast food outlet. Their typical supper is highly processed with little nutritional value. That is to say, when they eat at all.

“Our city has a huge, huge problem with homeless cats and dogs,” Cisneros explained. “It is not a matter of rounding them all up and sending them to Colorado, or placing them in shelters for adoption. There are just too many of them. We must stop it where it starts. We must spay and neuter our pets.” While still in the planning stage, Cisneros intends to dedicate the month of February each year to working in concert with many of the public and private shelters and veterinary clinics in the city. All are invited to celebrate and encourage pet adoptions, advance spay and neuter education, step up surgeries and more. She is calling it “Spay and Neuter Awareness Month.” “Right now, the city of Houston’s Bureau of Animal Regulations and Care, or BARC, can spay and neuter

Unless you drive around the area with your eyes closed, you’ve noticed the abundance of loose or homeless cats and dogs on our streets. Worse still, you may have driven past the inevitable companion animal carcass on the median of Ella or Heights Boulevard, TC Jester, or fill-in-the-blank street. Houston City Council member Karla Cisneros has certainly noticed, and she is preparing to do something about it. The councilwoman was elected by District H encompassing a large portion of The Leader’s readership, and is purposing a humane, all-in effort involving the entire city to address Houston’s thousands upon thousands of homeless pets. Cisneros is calling this heroic proposal “The Big Fix.”

How much sugar is too much for children? By Melissa Hawthorne For The Leader Heart disease is still the number one cause of death around the world. The American Heart Association (AHA) points to research demonstrating that “[t]here is consistent evidence that cardiovascular risk increases as added sugar consumption increases.” Based on their findings, the AHA recently stated that children 2 -18 years of age should limit their added sugar consumption to less than 6 teaspoons a day (25 grams). The AHA also recommends that children under 2 years of age have no added sugar in their diet and focus on nutritious foods that help their bodies grow. This is the first scientific statement the AHA has made on children’s added sugar consumption.

Limiting children’s added sugar consumption may be a gradual process. Take inventory of the common foods your children may consume and start reading the labels. A quick, informed look will show how much sugar is in some of the common foods that children consume. --12 oz Soda – 40g --Oreo cookies (4) – 13g --1 fruit snack packet – 18g --Small frozen yogurt (no toppings) – 29g --Chewy granola bar – 17g --Traditional pasta sauce (1/2 cup) - 10 grams sugar --Italian dressing (2 Tbsp) 3 grams sugar --Peanut Butter (2 Tbsp) - 3 grams sugar Although the AHA’s statement is long overdue, how to apply the recommendation to everyday eating is challenging. Currently the Federal Drug

Administration (FDA) nutrition label only has one line to list the amount of total sugar in a particular product. This makes it confusing for consumers to differentiate what sugars in the product are natural and which ones were added by the manufacturer. The good news? By July 2018 there will be a new nutrition label for all food products. One of the main changes will be a new reference specifically listing “added sugars.” This change will reduce confusion and simplify consumers’ decisions on what product is best for their family. Prior to this change, however, how should those concerned about healthy eating for themselves and their children limit added sugars? First, limit foods that have added sugar listed in the top 3 ingredients in the ingredient list.

Floyd Greer Francis

loyd Greer Francis (known to his friends as Bodey and his family as Pop) was born in, Madison, Wisconsin on October 27, 1925, and received his Angel Wings on September 2, 2016. Bodey was predeceased by his son Floyd G. Francis, Jr., and is survived by his wife of 39 years, Martha Lou Francis, his children, Gregory, Rebecca, Dennis, Ann, and Amy, with a plethora of grandchildren and great grandchildren. All the children of his blended family experienced his generous and all-encompassing love, and his wise counsel in a variety of life issues. He was in the U.S. Air Force in World War II and retired as a Major from the USAF Reserves in 1973. He enjoyed being a banker all of his professional life, however, family and sports came first. Bodey was always playing sports or watching them being played. He was an avid bowler for 70years. He was a “300 bowler” with a ring to prove it. Even at the age of 85 he bowled 11 strikes in a row. Bodey also loved playing golf. And was a member of the Pan American Golf Association since 1975. He was also a member of the Turnverein Club, as well as the Lion’s Club. On Tuesdays, he also loved playing Pinochle with his friends at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, of which Bodey had been a member since 1977. Another hobby of his was playing Craps and Black Jack. From 1970’s onward, he kept a list of his wins, losses and running total, always knowing where he stood. Bodey was the “head cook” at home and spoiled his wife, Martha, and the rest of the family by cooking the special dishes they liked IF he was given proper notice! Services will be held Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, 9:30am at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 420 Woodard St., Houston, Texas 77009, Interment will follow at Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to: St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 420 Woodard St., Houston, TX 77009.

Added sugar key words include, but are not limited to, brown sugar, invert sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, malt syrup, fructose, molasses, fruit juice concentrates, raw sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, honey and syrup. Second, eat more whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. Third, limit consumption of foods that are sweetened. Instead, try to flavor the foods yourself by adding fresh fruit or spices. For example, instead of buying flavored yogurt, buy plain yogurt and add chopped or pureed fruit for a naturally sweetened snack. Making small changes in you and your children’s diets can have lasting impact on your entire family.

Pediatric rehab from P. 1B A rock-climbing wall provides a contemporary backdrop for children to develop physical strength and posture control. Children also benefit from premier equipment including a body-weight supported treadmill and a functional, electrical-stimulator bicycle. Outdoor therapy space includes a garden, covered area and diverse terrains for walking. The new pediatric space also includes a mural painted

by local artists Mitch Cohen and April Murphy. “We wanted our rehabilitation area to be inviting to children, and Mitch and April helped to bring the space to life,” said Susan Jadlowski, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. “It seemed like the perfect way to weave the Greater Heights community into this exceptional service we’re now offering.”

TIRR Memorial Hermann -Greater Heights outpatient pediatric rehabilitation is located on the first floor of the South Tower in Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. BAC from P. 1B “Many kids eat their first meal of the day at school at about 8 a.m.,” added BAC CoFounder and Chief Operations Officer, James Hong. “Then they eat lunch at about 11:30 a.m. In many instances, the last meal our kids eat is lunch, so we bring healthy meals into schools in the afternoon to help enhance their nutrition. Eating well helps their attention spans, behavior and concentration; it helps them learn.” Federally subsidized through the Texas Department of Agriculture, Champion Fuel suppers are delivered to schools, community centers, and afterschool programs between 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The food is fresh, attractive and unitized. Each unit contains items from

a rotating menu such as soybased peanut butter, string cheese, chicken salad sliders, and organic, locally sourced fruit. On-site management is handled by BAC employees who observe strict federal guidelines. These are the folks who best understand the reasons for the effort. “I have served Champion Fuel suppers in several Houston-area schools, and I know first-hand how important they are to the kids. I have seen how hungry some of our children really are, and what a difference the meals make,” stated BAC site coordinator Irene McDougle. Be A Champion was founded in 2001 by Barganier and Hong, who were both football players for UH at the time. The

two friends founded the agency with the mission of serving the children of Texas. Today, BAC provides a variety of duringschool, after-school, tutorial and extended-day programs in addition to the Champion Fuel Program. All the programs are designed to provide our city’s young people with a path to a brighter future. “We could be serving suppers in nearly any school district, or youth organization in Texas.” Baganier stated. “The hunger is out there. All parents need to do is call the schools and make a request. Then, all the schools need to do, is call us. We are here to serve Houston’s kids. It is the very mission of Be A Champion.” For more information, go to www.bachamp.org.

New retail ‘floater’ at Garden Oaks Shopping Center By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If you are a commuter on North Shepherd, no doubt you have noticed the construction in the parking lot of the Garden Oaks Shopping Center, built in the 1950s, which is home to Signature Smiles, Brother’s Pizza, Millers Café and Farmboy Brew Shop among other tenants. Danny Morales with Hartman Management – no relation to the real estate firm Hartman & Associates – said that they are in the process of constructing a 4,945 square foot retail floater building which would have room for two or three more additional tenants in the complex. “We are building it on spec because we are so confident in the market,” said Morales, who said they have been talking with a range of tenants to lease either a portion or the entirety of the space. In its online marketing, Hartman lists the total square footage for the neighborhood center – not including the new addition – as 95,000 square feet. Another plus, according to Hartman, is that the center is bordered by two signalized

intersections, Garden Oaks Blvd on the North and W. 38th St. on the South. Online materials state that the center “hovers around 90% occupancy.” Showcase.com lists the total available space slightly higher at 17,460 square feet. Morales said that the company is not concerned about the current vacancies as they have plans to remodel the entire center and expand the tenant mix. “We want to put businesses in there that people want and need,” said Morales, who said

that they are in discussion with both local and national tenants. “There is some empty space, and some of those holes will be filled,” he said, noting that he’s confident that the remainder of the space will be leased by July of next year, after the renovation is complete. While the retail floater building will eliminate some of the parking in the front of the center, Morales said that there is also ample parking in the back which is underutilized. After the recent robbery at

LV Nails in the center, some residents have been wary of the complex, particularly on weekends. However, many have also rallied to support LV Nails. According to a recent customer, the nail salon recently added a door lock similar to the feature at banks and jewelry stores where the customer waits for staff to unlock the door and allow entry. Morales is aware of the robbery and says that while the company utilizes security measures, like cameras, there are other measures, like armed guards, which they would not employ due to safety concerns. “We always encourage tenants to do what they need to do to protect themselves and their customers,” he said.

Heights resident and political science professor shares views on No Dry Vote exists—though he did note he remains on the fence about the issue himself. “There’s no real evidence of that, but that will probably be the argument,” he said. “I have to assume that unless some organized effort is made to oppose it, I would think the supporters of this would succeed.” Stein believes that something as simple as a resident’s overall attentiveness to politics on a daily basis could also have a major effect on voters and the ordinance, reiterating that there are two aspects to voting—first to show up, the other being that the person must actually cast a ballot in order to affect the outcome. With 2016 bringing a contentious presidential election to the polls, Stein said numbers this year could see a spike in turnout of voters who come out only every four years to vote on national races as opposed to having a concentration of voters who have heavily followed proposed changes such as the No Dry Vote. “They’re (every-fourth-year voters) not attentive to politics, they don’t read stories on this, which means they may completely skip this race,” he said. “What I call the hearty (or more frequent voters) will know more about this, so they’re more in-tune to it.” Despite the presidential election likely bringing higher overall numbers to the polls, Stein expects that there will be a high rate of under voting on the ordinance, going hand-in-hand with effects of the aforementioned role a voter’s attentiveness (or lack of it) to politics that plays into their interest in progressing all the way down the ballot to particular ordinances such as the No Dry Vote. “For example, if 1,000 show up who can vote on this in the district, I would expect 700-

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Heights residents will have a long-speculated ordinance change finally on the ballot this coming November, and a local college professor believes that it will likely have no trouble passing. As residents flock to the polls in a few months, evidence that the discussion on the area’s “dry” standing might be nearing its final days will be right in front of their eyes with a proposed ordinance which will allow grocery stores to sell wine and beer for off-premise consumption making its way onto the bottom of the ballot in 2016. Rice University political science professor Robert Stein himself lives in the heart of the Heights near 20th Street, and believes that with the area “growing up,” and thousands pouring into the area, many living in the newer apartments and single-occupancy residences springing up love the idea of having the ability to buy alcohol on-site and take it home, driving them to support the ordinance at the polls once they are made aware of the proposition. “When you have a race like this, it’s really about who has the largest megaphone and who can broadcast it the loudest,” he said. “H-E-B clearly has the intent not only to turn out a vote for this with people who signed the petition, but they have the resources, they have the concentrated benefit more than anyone.” Though he is aware of the prevailing fear that such an ordinance passing will attract off-site alcohol consumption or play to stereotype that people will buy alcohol onsite, consume it off-site and cause social problems such as public drunkenness, he does not believe any such potential

Adolf Hoepfl garage providing service since 1946 For The Leader Finding an auto repair shop that you can trust can be as challenging as finding a good doctor. As someone who has had the privilege of knowing many great technicians over the years, the best shops have what I call garage men. There are seven qualities fitting to garage men that I will describe here. A garage man knows when a car is fixed properly; just like a farmer can survey crops and spot disease, a garage man can open a hood and spot a problem. Like a farmer, the garage man’s success depends on discipline, experience, and good tools. A farmer has to wake up early to complete his work; he has to plant crops at the right time in the right depth and in the right soil to insure the plants will grow. Garagemen are much the same. There’s also discipline required to repair cars and a huge body of knowledge and experience to acquire, not to mention tools. Of course there’s a significant difference, too. Garage men aren’t dependent upon good weather to fix cars. In addition, garage men want to understand how things work. They take things apart to find out what makes it tick. When a part fails, they’ll open it

Kathryn van der Pol, owner of Adolf Hoepfl garage, has provided automotive service since 1946.

up to see what went wrong. Slight discoloration of metal may draw blank stares from most folks, but show it to the garage man, and he’ll explain in detail what causes bearing failure. To find out how things

work means a willingness to get dirty daily. It means washing one’s hands over and over, crawling under cars, lying on your back, smelling noxious fumes, standing with your hands over your head

local nonprofit group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing, spay or neutering, and re-homing unwanted animals from near north Houston. “The pet overpopulation problem is out of control here. It’s enormous and it has to stop,” Gleghorn continued. “Backyard breeders and irresponsible pet owners are costing the city and tax payers millions of dollars. And the suffering this causes is immeasurable and unspeakable. We can no longer pretend it isn’t happening.” Gleghorn has been doing rescue work long enough to understand where the challenges of The Big Fix lie. She says it is a wonderful proposal, but it will be pointless unless the public knows about it and

learns. She stresses the need for education on the issue of pet overpopulation, and the solution of spaying and neutering. “Transportation is another challenge. Many people who want to do the right thing, may not have transportation to a veterinarian,” she explained. Gleghorn and her army of volunteers intend to step up in any way they can to help make The Big Fix a success. “It will not solve the problem immediately, but it’s a really good start,” she concluded with a smile. for hours, or hunching over a truck straining to fit your hand into hidden places that could be hot, sharp, and hurt. Being a garage man means to love the truth. There’s no selfdeception in fixing cars. If it’s fixed, it works, and, actually, garage men like it that way. Garage men can spot lies— whether a mechanic who says the master cylinder is leaking when it’s not, or a service adviser who recommends rotors and pads when pads alone will suffice. Nothing makes a Garage man angrier. Garage men take pride in work. With every broken vehicle, it’s war. It’s Man versus the Machine. So, a fixed car means victory. Garagemen take pride in every one of those victories. Nothing makes a Garage man more frustrated than a mechanic who doesn’t care about his work because it means he isn’t willing to fight. A Garage man asks for help. No one knows everything about cars because cars change. He also knows that the guy who says I am a great mechanic is not. In my opinion, the world would be a better place if garage men were running it.

This is the first of a four part series. Kathryn van der Pol is the owner of Adolf Hoepfl Garage. Since 1946, Adolf Hoepfl Garage has been providing friendly

Spay from P. 1B about 80 pets a day. We are hoping to bring that up to 100 or more with voluntary vets throughout February,” Cisneros explained. However, the main event of the month will be “The Big Fix.” On the second Saturday of February, Cisneros purposes to enlist as many veterinarians, clinics, and animal agencies as possible to offer free or reduced-price spay and neuter surgery to prevent the birth of more unwanted. For the kind folks in Houston who are working tirelessly to find homes for our many homeless animals, the idea is music to their ears. “Councilwoman Cisneros is awesome,” stated Melinda Gleghorn, one of the founders the Animal Justice League, a

Coach Lewis returns to Heights volleyball By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader While everything about the Heights High School volleyball team may seem new this year – a new name, a few new faces and a new coach – it all still feels oddly familiar. That’s because although they went through a name change, they’re still at the same location. As for the unfamiliar players on the team, they’ve just moved up from the freshman and junior varsity teams. And, despite having a different coach on the sideline in Chelsea Lewis, the Bulldogs still played under Lewis’ coaching philosophy last year. The reason Heights played under Lewis’ game plan last year is because she was hired to be the Bulldogs’ coach but had to go on maternity leave at the start of last season when her daughter Lauren was born. Lewis’ assistant, Gennifer Ehmling, stepped in and coached the Bulldogs to a fifthplace finish, narrowly missing the final District 18-6A playoff spot. “I don’t know if I could’ve done it without her,” Lewis said of Ehmling. “We’ve been friends for a long time. We both graduated from Heights

when it was still Reagan.” Under Lewis’ direction, she hopes she can bring the team back to the playoffs, which would be the first time since they moved to 6A. Lewis said she doesn’t see the team having problems with the transition from Ehmling to her because of how similar their coaching styles are and how familiar they were with Lewis before her one-year leave. Since Lewis has returned, the Bulldogs have been using the offseason to focus on their defense and how they hit the ball. Lewis said that on the court, Heights would be led by a senior duo in 5-foot-10 Skylon Pappillion and 5-7 Kamryn Linton. As an outside hitter, Pappillion earned first-team all-district honors last season and will be counted on to aggressively attack the net. Linton is responsible for getting the team in place and setting up her teammates to score. “My setter, Kamryn Linton, is pretty much my quarterback,” Lewis said. Joining Pappillion and Linton on the team is sophomore libero Martha Pallares, who is expected to contribute imme-

diately. Although Lewis expects her team to compete right away, her most difficult task will be to find a lineup in which the players complement one another. “I have a lot a lot of tall girls, so it’s been challenging trying to find a rotation that works,” Lewis said. They’ve had a few games to work on it so far, but with district rapidly approaching, she will have to find a group quickly. Bellaire and Lamar High Schools are the favorites to win district, but Lewis said she believes her team can compete with the best of them. The Bulldogs won’t have to wait long to see how they stack up, as they play Lamar and Bellaire in back-to-back games. They play host to Lamar on Sept. 13th and then visit Bellaire on Sept. 16th. Both games are at the Wilkins Pavilion. In addition to getting her team to the playoffs, she has also made it a goal to get her athletes into college. “I’m hoping at least three of my athletes play collegiate ball,” Lewis said. “I want to inspire them to move to the next level.”

Scarborough’s Rodriguez named Athlete of the Week For The Leader

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Scarborough’s Damion Rodriguez. Rodriguez is starting his senior year and plays on the football team. We chatted with Rodriguez for a quick interview.

What has been your most memorable moment/ game as a player so far? As a player, my favorite memory was when my team at Scarborough high school and I broke the milestone losing streak by beating Kipp. Which team has been the most difficult that you have played so far? West Orange Stark High School has been the toughest for sure. If you could play anywhere in college, where would it be and why? I would like to continue my football career at the University of Houston What drew you to the sport(s) you are now playing/why do you play your respective sport?

I used to only play baseball, then I started playing basketball and football and the reason was mainly for the passion for being active and playing the sports that I play. They keep me physically active and in shape and maintain my grades as well, since you have to be passing in order to play sports anyway. But now I feel playing multiple sports and being good at them, gives me more opportunities to play in college and even in the pros. When I got older, I started realizing how much my parents and grandparents do for me, so I decided to set a goal for myself. I want to be able to sign that big check in the big leagues, no matter what the sport is, and be able to call my family up or sit and talk to them, with tears of joy running down my face, telling them they can retire and they won’t have to work ever again. Personally, to me I believe that is least possible way to repay them. Who is your favorite athlete or biggest

influence? My favorite athlete is probably JJ Watt, because he’s a great athlete and does so much for the community and others, and a lot of the time he doesn’t even try to be in the spotlight when he does so. What is your go-to food/ meal before a game? I don’t have a certain meal I eat, I just eat the amount that doesn’t get me full, but leaves me with plenty of energy. Also I don’t want to have to use the restroom during or right before a game. Who is your favorite musical artist to listen to? I like to listen to Tupac before the game and honestly I believe he’s the greatest rapper to ever live. Do you have any pregame rituals? I enjoy listening to music before the game because it gets my mind thinking on the right track. I also like to pray whether it’s by myself or with my teammates.
