Local Poke eatery now set to join Revive’s Ella Oaks By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Get ready fish lovers because Local Poke has signed a lease for their second location in the Ella Oaks Center at Ella and 34th Street. Their first location in Houston opened in November 2017 at 4500 Washington Ave. #350, near Rice Military. “Revive Development is excited to welcome Local Poke,” said Revive’s Monica Danna. “We signed them to the last remaining endcap in the center.” Local Poke’s Andy Jan, who owns the restaurants with partners Christopher Farrell and Peter Hwang, said that he first was introduced to poke in California where he met a college friend of his cousin’s whose family owned sushi restaurants. “I loved the concept of poke,” said Jan, who explains that poke is a classic Hawaiian dish, made from the less pretty, but still tasty scraps of fish. “They cut it into little cubes,” he said. According to whatscook-
ingamerica.net - poke actually means “cut piece” or “small piece” in Hawaiian. Fishermen would season the cut-offs from their catch to eat as a snack. Over the years, the seasonings used have been influenced by Japanese and other Asian cuisines. In Japan, they have the similar sashimi. Jan’s California friend opened a Local Poke there and Jan and his partners opened in Houston. “We share the brand but have different owners,” Jan said. Jan said at Local Poke they cut up the entire fish, and customize the toppings and the sauces. The kind of fish depends on what’s in season whether it is Chilean, Scottish, or Norwegian. Their most popular dish, according to Jan, is an homage to the classic Hawaiian poke with ahi tuna, which is marinated with soy sauce, Sriracha and honey, and sprinkled with Macadamia nuts. Methodist program gives dialysis workers transplantation knowledge For The Leader Social worker Brianna McClure talks to dialysis patients every day about the option of receiving a living donor kidney transplant. But it wasn’t until she saw one being performed that she understood what it means for a person to receive the gift of life. “I saw one of my patients receive a kidney donated by his wife, and it was a very emotional experience,� McClure said. “Seeing the kidney being taken out of the donor, watching them prepare it, and then putting it into the recipient was truly an amazing and emotional experience for me.� McClure took part in the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center’s Transplant Partnership Program. The program is designed to bring staff members from dialysis units into the hospital on the day one of their patients is receiving a living donor transplant to see how the transplant process works. “The dialysis providers are required by law to talk to dialysis patients about transplant, so they are key educators for this population,� said Joe Sharp, a business development specialist who developed and oversees the program. “Once they experience the surgery themselves they are better able to connect with future patients and help them understand the process of living donation and transplantation.� A recent study found that patients who receive a living donor kidney transplant have a nearly 88 percent survival rate at five years compared to 47 percent for patients on dialysis. “The 10-year survival rate is 56 percent for living donor patients and 20 percent for those on dialysis,� said Hassan Ibrahim, M.D., a nephrologist with Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center. “It’s important that dialysis social workers have all the facts before talking to patients about living donation because more than 90,000
patients are currently on the kidney transplant list waiting for deceased donors.� Sharp believes the program helps dialysis staff members walk away with a new story to tell about living donation. “There is a lot of fear associated with living donation. Is it safe? Can the donor live a healthy life with one kidney? These are just a couple of concerns most people have,� Sharp said. “When they tell patients what they have witnessed in the OR, they are instantly validated in the patient’s eyes because they have actually “been there� and are

Though the idea of maintaining a level of normalcy may be the furthest thing from a person’s mind upon being diagnosed with cancer, the National Cancer Institute notes that people with cancer can still enjoy life. Daily routines such as going to work and spending time with family and friends
can lift cancer patients’ spirits and give them a sense of purpose beyond beating cancer. Cancer treatments can produce a host of both minor and significant side effects. During treatment, many cancer patients experience fatigue, nausea and/or vomiting. When symptoms allow, cancer patients should do their best to live as normal a life as possible during their treatments. Achieving such normalcy may require a few tweaks to one’s typical routine, but such changes are minor. Let others know when you plan to exercise. Physical activity has been shown to boost energy levels, making exercise a valuable ally to cancer patients. Exercise may be difficult, if not impossible, when treatment-related
fatigue is at its worst. But physical activity when symptoms are less severe can provide the energy boost cancer patients need along with all of the other benefits routine exercise provides. The NCI advises cancer patients to get their physicians’ approval before exercising during treatment. In addition, patients should let loved ones know when and where they are planning to exercise as a safety precaution. Work from home. Going to work is another way for cancer patients to maintain some normalcy during their treatments. On days when treatment-related symptoms make it difficult to travel, men and women can work from home. Doing so will provide a sense of fulfillment at the end of
the workday without having to navigate potentially taxing commutes to and from the office. Set goals. The NCI advises cancer patients to think about what they want to do when they feel well again. Setting goals can give patients in treatment something other than beating cancer to work toward. Planning an overseas trip or learning about a potential career change can focus patients on goals that do not involve their disease. You can go order equipment or materials and it gets delivered, but the people are the most critical, especially in a day and age where there is a shortage of skilled craft workers,” Alavi said. “A company that has a group of workers that are skilled, trained in what they’re doing and dedicated to the company is a great asset.”
