This week’s edition of Business Leaders looks into what will happen with the Select Specialty hospital off 19th Street and the first tenant in the White Oak Bayou Village shopping center among other news. Saturday, August 6, 2016 • Page 1B

Select Specialty Hospital calls it quits, seeks new tenants By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com When the Houston Heights location of Select Specialty hospitals closed in July 2015, it left a gap in the health care needs of the area. It’s currently available for lease, however, so perhaps that may change. Melissa Fox, senior manager of communications for Select Medical, said that the Houston West location closed earlier this year too and the Houston Memorial City location was part of a hospital swap between Select Medical and Kindred. “This was a business decision to cease long-term acute care services within the Houston market,” Fox said, noting that they still operate 107 Select Specialty Hospitals and

Regency Hospitals in 27 states across the United States. Plant operations manager Dennis Reynolds is still working full time at the former Select site at 1917 Ashland St. “The kitchen is still functioning 24/7,” he said. “We’re still here.” That’s because Select Specialty Hospital – Houston, L.P. owns the building, according to Fox. And St. Joseph Medical Center in the Heights (SJMCH) still operates on the first, fifth and sixth floors. “We will have some employees providing security and maintenance services until it is occupied,” she said. Fox said that once there is a new tenant in place, Select will not maintain a presence in the building. The flyer from Transwest-

ern, who is the agent for the lease, says that of the 6-story, 192,077 square foot facility, 15,000 square feet is available on the first floor and 27,000 square feet on the second through fourth floors. The anchor tenant is listed as St. Joseph Hospital in The Heights and other comments include mention of an onsite Emergency Department, with seven patient rooms, a 1.22/1,000 square foot parking ratio, a former 244 bed, long-term acute care facility and a cafeteria servicing all tenants and visitors. Transwestern Vice-President Scott Carter said that while it isn’t a necessity for the new tenant to be a medical one, usually medical tenants like to be around medical tenants.

Raspado Xperts, first tenant at White Oak Bayou Village By Christina Martinez

Walk down the streets of Mexico and find peddlers pushing freshly picked fruit, shaved ice, and fresh juices to fight off the heavy heat. Many times, you can find all of these products combined into one beverage – un raspado. This traditional treat is something Angelica and Juan Carlos Ruelas have built a business off of, put their family recipes into and brought their newest location into the neighborhood at Raspado Xperts. The business is a family business, originating in California with Juan Carlos and his sister setting the first stone. The sunny state is also where Angelica and Juan Carlos met 26 years ago. In 2003, the couple moved to Texas and eventually agreed they’d bring the family business to Houston. Little York and Airline hosts the original location of Raspado Xperts, and now the family has opened six total in Houston; three directly under the direction of the Ruelas. “Everything that comes in here, we discuss with the family,” Angelica said. “Everyone gets a say or gets to give ideas.” “It’s not a new concept, we didn’t create the idea, we just made it cleaner and healthier,” Juan Carlos added. From the menu, the couple says their best sellers are the Chamango, Fresas con Crema and the Bionico. The Chamango is traditionally made with shaved ice, mango, assorted chili spices (Raspado Xperts make their’s in-house) and lime juice. Fresas con Crema is a very traditional Mexican treat, being the direct translation of strawberries and cream. Bionico is a fruit salad, with toppings of granola, shaved

“There’s so much in infrastructure,” he said. “Medical tenants can get the most use out of it because of all the infrastructure. Medical tenants like to be in same area.” Carter said that Select will entertain a lease or a sale. While the anchor tenant SJMCH is staying put, they aren’t currently looking to expand. “At this time, St. Joseph Medical Center in the Heights plans to maintain our current leased space within the Select Specialty Hospital building,” said Jeff Bielik, Administrative Director of the SJMCH campus. For more information about a potential lease of the building contact Transwestern Vice-president at Scott.Carter@transwestern.com.

Orangetheory Fitness to open in Heights Orangetheory Fitness will open its ninth location in the Sawyer Yards building, 2313 Edwards Street, Suite 135. Led by franchise owner Jim Potesta, the new studio will be the second location inside the loop and will feature 16 treadmills, 16 rowing machines and 16 strength floor stations. The Sawyer Heights studio is expected to open by the end of 2016, but the pre-sale office is currently open in the parking lot at the Sawyer Heights studio for the public to sign up for memberships before the studio officially opens its doors.

coconut and usually drenched in cream. “When we first opened up our location on Airline, there was a business down the street that did ice with the sugar syrup,” Angelica said. “So the neighborhood wasn’t used to our product, or the price, so we handed out so many free samples to show them what we were doing; to show we didn’t have just sugary ice.” When it came to picking a new location for their family business, the Ruelas said they actually weren’t looking. In fact, the White Oak Bayou Village shopping center management team sought out the Ruelas and their family business. “We’re really working on bringing in quality tenants and showing them the plans we have to redevelop the shopping center,” Joanna Laufer

with Nankani Management said. “Our vision is to integrate the White Oak bike trail with the shopping center to make it a gathering place for the community.” The Ruelas and Raspado Xperts are the very first tenants to embark on this new redeveloped vision and the couple says it’s something their family can stand behind. “It promotes health and it promotes family,” Angelica said. “This location will be the first out of all of our family’s locations that will have something like this. We even have a drive-thru.” The grand opening of Raspado Xperts will be from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 at 5627 W. Little York. The community is invited to ride their bikes out, try new treats and meet the family business.

Sale of Exxon Mobil Corp. campus, retail coming

A partnership affiliated with Fidelis Realty Partners and Houston real estate investor Khaled Salem of Williamsburg Enterprises bought Exxon’s Brookhollow campus, located at 4400-4550 Dacoma St., for approximately $11 million earlier this this year and now they announce plans for a retail development according to Realty News Report. Alan Hassenflu of Fidelis Realty Partners told Realty News Report the energy giant’s former Brookhollow campus would be a “dominant” community and retail center in the area. Construction could begin as early as next year.

A new look for White Oak Bayou?

Houston Public Media recently highlighted a study currently being conducted by the Flood Control District with the Memorial-Heights Redevelopment Authority to explore whether White Oak Bayou could be returned to a more natural state. Chief Operations Officer of the Harris County Flood Control District Matthew Zeve said that an engineering firm will conduct that study, expected to take at least six months, to determine feasibility for the design which would be some form of channel section, with more curves to it. “Any alternative that increases flood hazards along White

Oak Bayou, [then] we won’t do a project,” said Zeve. “We will not allow a project to go forward that will increase flood hazards on White Oak Bayou.”

Artist Bill Davenport says that the Indiegogo campaign raising money to rebuild the Giant Mushroom Forest at 1236 Studewood St. ended in June with a result of almost $2,000 from 40 supporters, some in the neighborhood, some who support his work in general. “This is more than enough to pay for materials, so the rebuild is definitely going to happen, and I’m still accepting direct contributions to help pay for labor, via check, or credit card, or Paypal at www.billdavenport. com,” he said. Davenport initially created the Giant Mushroom Forest in 2009 as a temporary installation by Ladybird Lake in Austin. He said he’s probably going to begin building the new giant Mushroom Forest II in September, when he’s also going to be making some other giant

media, and with the public. “Everyone has been thankful and very gracious with their compliments,” he said. “I also received quite a bit of support via beverages, thumbs up and a couple high-fives while I was out painting. So, thank you to the Heights, UP Art Studio and Ann Richards for the support, opportunity and inspiration.” The tree mural at 43rd and Rosslyn is courtesy of w3r3on3, also known as Gelson Danilo Lemus. According to his mini murals biography, Lemus is a Guatemalan-born, resident of

Houston, who has been creating works of art for the last 17 years, beginning at the age of 6. He was introduced to graffiti at the age of 14 and has since then established a unique and distinguishable three-dimensional style, which often illustrates movement. He recently showcased his artistic talent in Mexico City, where he participated by painting at a Women’s Day event, and also collaborated with Houston-based artist Ana Maria, at the annual SEL 4 show in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

More murals are popping up on traffic signal control cabinets around The Leader area, with two new editions at Heights Boulevard and 6th Street and 43rd and Rosslyn. The Mini Murals project started in the summer of 2015 and was originally commissioned by UP Art Studio founders Noah and Elia Quiles to turn traffic signal control cabinets in Houston into art. Now there are more than 100 murals around the city. It’s the late Ann Richards who is causing a stir on Heights Boulevard. Artist Tra` Slaughter said that his inspiration for the piece was Richards’ career, her legacy and the impact of her character that is still just as strong today. Communities guide the artists in selecting the art’s theme. “This particular district wanted

to portray and celebrate women of politics who made lasting changes in government today.” said Slaughter. “Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan were suggested and from there I researched each of the ladies and created a rendering based upon my research. After a few minor revisions, what you see is the final result for Ann, and on August 2nd I’ll begin the Barbara Jordan box at Dallas and Taft.” Tra` Slaughter is a 16 year resident of Houston who moved to Houston in 2000 to attend the Art Institute of Houston, and obtained an Associate Degree in Graphic Design in 2002. “I began painting again while attending AIH, and sold my first paintings there as well,” he said. “From that time on I’ve painted, and strive to paint every day.” Slaughter said he’s overwhelmed at the response to his Richards piece, both on social

s school gets back into session it’s the perfect time to review some dental tips to keep your student’s smiles bright! To begin with, it’s a great time to schedule for your child’s dental check-up! The American Dental Association recommends that children are seen every six months for a regular cleaning and exam, and the first of the school year is a perfect time to make that happen. It’s important to stress to your child about making healthy snack decisions while they are at school. Lunchtime outside of your watchful eye it is great to know that your student is enjoying snacks that are low in sugar to keep those dreaded sugar bugs from making a home in their teeth. I always recommend that your child rinse well with water after eating lunch or any snacks. This helps to wash out any food sugars that might accumulate on their teeth. If your child is old enough that they are wearing braces, I highly encourage that they bring a toothbrush to use after they’ve eaten. Braces tend to collect food more readily around the brackets and can very easily lead to decay which may not be detected until after the braces are removed. It’s no fun to have really straight teeth that have cavities all around them because they weren’t kept clean! Finally, for those little athletes out there, be sure that they are wearing a mouthguard to help protect their teeth from any impacts. This can keep them from an unnecessary emergency dental visit. Good luck this year to all of the little scholars as they begin this semester. With a few easy tips, we can make sure our children are smiling until next summer!

ave you ever noticed that the raise in pay which thrilled you beyond measure when first received begins to go flat after a couple of weeks or months? After a few months, you are not discernibly happier with the increase in pay than you were before. Likewise, new pleasures soon become humdrum, as we adapt or “habituate to them. Psychologists call this adaptation with regard to pleasures the “hedonic treadmill. One way to avoid this is to seek variety. Very few of us want to eat our favorite food three times a day, and if we want to continue enjoying it, it probably makes sense to limit how often we have it. Lifelong hobbies will continue to give pleasure if we vary them in some way, perhaps learning new and better techniques which are relevant to the hobby. Music, literature, and the arts are wonderful sources of pleasure, but no one wants to hear the same song over and over again. Variety is truly the spice of life. Consider how rich the world is with tastes and sounds and sights just waiting to be savored. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and he shall give you the desires of your heart. New K.J.V.Psalm 37:4

Dry vs wet food for cats: Which is best? get enough protein from plant material to exist, they need the amino acid taurine in order to thrive. Taurine is found primarily in the muscle meat of animals. Carnivores have short digestive systems because they are not required to break down the tough cellulose found in plants. Introducing cellulose into their diets invites digestive problems. On the whole, wet food, with the primary ingredient being meat or fish, provides a meal that’s better suited to a cat’s dietary needs. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that canned cat food is always a better choice than dry. The best dry cat food is better for your cat than the worst canned food. If you feed your cat premium cat food, she is likely to thrive whether the food is in wet or dry form. If your cat only eats dry food, she is likely to be getting less nutrition than a cat eating wet food. Many low quality dry foods contain a lot of fillers. In the wild, carbohydrates are only about five percent of a cat’s diet – what she gets from ingesting the stomach contents of her prey. Some fillers are necessary for the extrusion process that shapes the dry food nuggets during manufacturing. But they’re also included as a cost-savings, since they’re a

Dear Tabby, My pet sitter was recently appalled to learn that we only feed our cats dry food and not wet food. She said that wet food is best. What are your thoughts on this? Should we make the switch? Wondering about wet food in Woodland Heights Dear Wondering, You pose an interesting question that no one seems to know the “right answer to. It seems that this is an age-old debate among cat lovers: wet vs.dry food. Both types of food have their benefits but to understand the issues, you need to understand the cat’s physiology. While dogs are omnivorous and able to break down and digest both vegetable and animal protein, cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they need muscle-based meats in their diets. Although theoretically, they might

cheaper ingredient than meat. Hydration is key for cats though, and canned food averages 78 percent moisture, whereas dry food averages only 10 percent. Cats on dry food diets usually don’t get enough water. They can become chronically dehydrated which contributes to health problems like Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) and urinary crystals. Cats on dry food-only diets are also slightly more prone to obesity and diabetes than cats who eat wet food. Part of this is due to the high carbohydrate levels in many kinds of kibble, and part is due to the free-choice feeding of dry food which gives cats 24-hour access to food. So, that means wet food is better, right? Well, not necessarily. A very cheaply produced wet food is not better for your cat than a premium quality dry food. It’s always important to check the ingredients. It should list an animal protein source as its number one ingredient, and ideally, it should not contain meat by-products. And, as I always say, feed your pet the best food that you can afford now, to save money on vet bills in the future. Do you have a burning question for Tabby? If so, email her at deartabbyquestions@gmail.com.

What is Canine Lepto?

Pet Sitting & Dog Walking

713-446-4176 Insured & Bonded

Leptospirosis is a bacteria that dogs can acquire from contaminated water and/or exploring areas where wildlife have eliminated their urine. Common carriers of Lepto are other dogs, raccoons, opossums and rats. Many other animals can be affected, including people and squirrels. Clinically in dogs we see acute liver and kidney failure with Lepto. Often there is fever, vomiting and many other symptoms. Diagnosis involves blood panels, urinalysis and state lab testing. This takes time and cannot always conďŹ rm Lepto on the initial testing. Treatment must be quick and aggressive before permanent organ damage occurs and the dog dies. Why are Lepto cases increasing? Are we encroaching on wildlife areas more? Are we testing and diagnosing more often? Are new Lepto serovars emerging? Are we vaccinating less than years past? The vaccine lasts one year (at best). ONLY your vet should give it after evaluating your dogs individual needs and exposure risk. There may be some reasons why some dogs should not receive this as there is with other vaccines. All pets should be observed at home after any vaccine is given. Unlikely but possible adverse reactions can occur especially if vaccines are not administered professionally. Again, ground water and wildlife (especially urban rats) exposure constitute the greatest but not only risk. Warm spring rains and summer oods increase the incidence of Lepto in dogs who then spread it to others.

The Leader means “community in every sense of the word. I have met many people at our front desk, some who are advertisers and have become friends, some I have known since high school and haven’t seen for 40 years! Our neighbors come by sometimes just to comment on something that we have run in the paper. Even though they may not always agree with us, when they comment we know they are reading us so we must be doing something right! I do know one thing about living in this neighborhood for almost 60 years: neighbors may move away during the course of their lives for various reasons but a really high percentage move back. I think it has something to do with a love for our community.

In recent years, the Scarborough Spartans volleyball program has struggled to field a winning team, but a new hope has emerged in first-year Head Coach Michael Lannon. “We are going to build the program from the bottom up,” said Lannon. “We want to win and be competitive, but we understand that there are going to be growing pains.” Lannon, who is in his second year at Scarborough, agreed to become the volleyball program’s new coach after

“The girls I have talked to have been enthusiastic,” Lannon said. As he continues to recruit, he said that he is looking for Adilee Perez, Violetta Basden and Jordan Eagle to step up and become the leaders on the team. The Spartans have already started practicing and will open up their season against Northside High School on August 16th. “I’m ready to get started and see what we have,” Lannon said. “We want to be the best that we can be with what we have.”

Scarborough’s new volleyball coach wants to build foundation spending a year as an assistant with the football team. While he hasn’t coached volleyball in nearly 15 years, Lannon brings 34 years of coaching experience to the team. He also won two state football championships in Florida as a head coach. Lannon said that the volleyball team only won one game last season but attributed it to the lack of depth, saying that there weren’t very many players on the team. He has started recruiting players for his club and hopes that volleyball can serve as an outlet for the athletes.

team then went on to win two playoff games with Gunnell as the primary starter before being eliminated by Bishop Dunne Catholic School. This season, he enters as the undisputed starter for St. Pius and will look to continue where he left off. He said that now that the offers have started to come in, “a lot of the pressure is off because I can just go out and have fun and play relaxed with my team.” With three years of high school remaining, it is very likely that the St. Pius standout will continue to receive offers from schools across the country. But for Gunnell, he’s fixated on helping the Panthers win now and avoid letting the hype around him consume him. “I stay focused by not getting caught up in all the offers and just focus on being the best player I can be,” Gunnell said.

. T.C

“It’s really a special but humbling experience,” Gunnell said. All three universities who have approached Gunnell have fielded successful quarterbacks in recent years, so they know how to develop talent at the position. A&M and FSU both had Heisman Trophy-winning play callers in Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston, and this season, UH has a Heisman hopeful in Greg Ward Jr. Gunnell took over as signal caller for St. Pius midway through last season and came up big in wins against districtfoes Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School and St. John XXIII College Preparatory. “I was a little nervous at first, but I just kept on gaining more and more confidence as the games went on,” Gunnell said. The Panthers went 8-2 during the regular season last year as Gunnell split time as the starting quarterback. The

Ten games, 1447 passing yards and a pair of training camps is all it took for St. Pius X quarterback Grant Gunnell to show off his arm and get NCAA Division-I universities to take notice. The gun-slinging sophomore has already received three offers from colleges near and far after he put on clinics at the camps of Texas A&M University and Florida State University this summer. “I ended up at the FSU and A&M camps because I had talked to a coach from both of the schools, and they showed interest and wanted me to come and throw for them,” said Gunnell. After seeing Gunnell throw at the A&M camp in early July, Head Coach Kevin Sumlin and his staff were impressed enough to make Gunnell an offer to continue his career at A&M after he graduates in 2019. Nearly two weeks later, he wooed another set of coaches in FSU’s Jimbo Fisher and University of Houston’s Tom Herman, and just three days apart, the coaches extended an offer for Gunnell to become a part of their respective programs. Fisher and Herman’s teams happened to play each other in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl this past season and will seemingly compete off the field in their recruiting attempts.
