Grocery shopping for the school year By Monica Thomas, MPH, RD, LD AdviceforEating.com As another school year begins, most of us find our grocery needs change and expand. It is not hard to see that grocery shopping has evolved in several ways over the years. Also, as society has become more health conscientious, we have begun to see an increasing demand for local and organic foods, as well as a substantial knowledge for all known food allergies/intolerances. So can you get it all? Does this grocery shopping experience exist? The answer is you most likely will not have this experience at just one store; but here are some of our favorites for you to try.

First, let us start with the superstore that will likely check off most of the items on your list. In one store, you can find pre-cut vegetables, organic protein powder, wild caught seafood and prepared ready-to-cook meals all at a competitive price. In addition to food items, you can also find kitchen items/appliances, cleaning supplies and a ton of other home necessities. Likely, the biggest appeal of HEB is that they offer curbside pickup. You can now order your groceries online and pick them up in the parking area marked for curbside. How easy is that? Unfortunately, this amenity is not offered at every HEB, but the larger locations are making it standard practice. The chain has also made a push to provide a greater number of local and organic food options. Examples

include fresh, local, farm-raised eggs and shrimp sourced straight from the Gulf of Mexico. Another new feature is HEB’s Meal Simple, which are ready to cook items that include salmon, chicken and vegetable sides. They can be found in the new Meal Simple section of the store. These items are great for those nights when you do not have time to spend in the kitchen making a gourmet meal. You can cook them in their packaging and they are done in minutes!

farms to help them stay stocked and compete with other retailers like Whole Foods. In addition, you can find popular brands like KIND bars, BOOM CHICKA POP, KIRKLANDS Coconut Water, Wholly Guacamole and may others. If you can walk through Costco and find many of your family’s favorite products at a competitive price, the membership just may be worth it.

Presumably this will not be your one stop shop, but there are great benefits to shopping here regularly. If you like the term “bargain shopping,” then you will likeTrader Joe’s, especially for the fresh produce and tasty store brand products. Trader Joe’s products must adhere to strict guidelines that ensure there are not any artificial flavors or preservatives, MSG, trans fat, dairy ingredients from BST (also known as bovine growth hormone) sources or genetically modified ingredients.

Online Shopping The grocery shopping experience has been “Amazon’ed” online. Online shopping can be great for those hectic weeks where time will not permit a satisfactory trip to the grocery store. New services like Instacart, Favor or Amazon Fresh allow one to purchase groceries online and be delivered right to your door. If you think online shopping is too expensive, check out Thrive Market. The online store sells many popular organic brands at wholesale prices and will be delivered to your door. It does require a membership fee to join, but can be worth

While shopping weekly at Costco may not be necessary, it is a great way to stock up on nonperishable items. Additionally, it is a convenient option for large families to buy bulk in a cost-effective manner. It also provides a wide variety of organic meats, fish, produce, grains and snacks. It may surprise you to know that Costco owns organic

Don’t forget your back to school checkups For The Leader The back to school season is a time when families shop for backpacks and school supplies, but physicians with Memorial Hermann Medical Group (MHMG) hope parents will also use the return of school as a reminder to schedule an annual exam for their child. “Annual exams allow families to develop a relationship with a family medicine physician or pediatrician. By building that relationship, the physician is able to better track a child’s development over time and create an accurate medical history,” says Kesha Zaveri, D.O., a family medicine physician with Memorial Hermann Medical Group The Heights. Physicians will perform a head to toe physical of your child. Parents can expect the physician to feel the thyroid gland, check for scoliosis, and listen to the heart, lungs and abdomen, among other things. As a child gets older, the exams can also

be a time to discuss changes in their body and any mental health concerns that may arise. “Pre-teens and teenagers may feel more comfortable asking certain questions to a physician, rather than a parent. When your child has an established relationship with their physician, it opens the door of communication and enables us to educate them on the changes they may be seeing in their bodies or with their emotions,” says Dr. Zaveri. “Additionally, should your child be involved in a sport, most schools require a sports physical, where a physician can also address issues like nutrition and injury prevention.” Memorial Hermann Medical Group offers both primary care and a wide range of specialty care by board certified physicians in convenient locations around the greater Houston area. Find a nearby Heights-area Primary Care Clinic or Urgent Care Clinic.

the extra expense to shop organic products regularly. Online shopping is also a great way to conveniently buy products you cannot find in stores yet. While this option may not be your weekly go-to, it is a perfect alternative when you are in a time crunch. How did these local favorites rank in latest Consumer Reports magazine? Each store was ranked by consumers based on store cleanliness, competitive pricing, fresh store-prepared foods, staff courtesy, checkout speed, produce quality and variety, meat/poultry quality, store-brand quality, selection of healthy options, prices of organic options and local produce quantity. Trader Joe’s ranked 3rd overall with a score of 86 out of a 100, followed by Costco, and HEB. With so many grocery stores options, our best advice is to meal plan! As you gear up for another school year, meal plan and make your grocery lists according to your preferred store to ensure success.

Neighbors: Pugh celebrates 99th birthday; 34th wedding anniversary for the Zuccarinis By Elizabeth Villarreal

Contact a Memorial Hermann Joint Center. And start living pain free.

elizasgarden@outlook.com

Happy birthday to Hattie Belle Pugh, also known to grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighbors in Ella Lee Forest as Maw-Maw. Mrs. Pugh celebrated her 99th birthday on Aug. 9. A proud member of Candlelight Church of Christ on Watonga, Mrs. Pugh has been a resident of Ella Lee Forest since the 1950s. She raised two sons and was the secretary at Oak Forest Elementary School for 20 years, making a difference daily for colleagues as well as multitudes of neighborhood children and their parents. Pugh also worked for General George Patton in her younger years. Oak Forest Elementary acknowledged her birthday this week with a loving message on their marquee. Children created artwork as special gifts and friends from all over the area sent birthday cards and best wishes. Friends, family and neighbors are thrilled to celebrate Mrs. Pugh and will be visiting throughout the week with her. Happy anniversary to Anthony and Diane Zuccarini of Shepherd Park Plaza! The Zuccarinis celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on Aug. 6. Proud parents of beautiful daughters Angela Kelly and Amanda Johnson, they now have two sons-in-law, Kyle Kelly and Chris Johnson, and an adorable grandson, Case Johnson. Tony Zuccarini coached and taught at Waltrip for 30 years and Diane taught at Durham Elementary for 24 years where daughter Angela has been teaching for 2 years. Angela shares her parents’ love story here: “My parents met by some kind of divine intervention. My father grew up in Donora, which is a small town in Pennsylvania, and my mother grew up in Hobart, which is a small town in Indiana. After college, jobs in Education were hard to come by in the North and both

Diane and Tony Zuccarini in 1983.

of these young and eager educators-to-be separately made their way down South. My maternal grandparents joked that my mom would move back home after realizing what Houston was REALLY like. Knowing the independent warrior that she is, it is no surprise to me that she stayed. Meanwhile, my dad was soaking up his “Italian Stallion” bachelor years with a few buddies he’d known prior to moving down to Texas. When my parents met, it was 1982 and my dad was already teaching and coaching at Waltrip High School (where he stayed for over 30 years before retiring). My mom was visiting the school and they caught sight of each other. In my head, it looks something like Looney Tunes’ Pepé Le Pew’s heart eyes when he sees Penelope. Except in this version, the man is wearing too-tight gym clothes with an enormous mustache that has become legendary, and the woman has golden curls and high-waisted jeans. My mom played hard to get for a while before finally conceding to a date. They dated for less than a year before getting engaged and were married Aug. 6, 1983, in my mom’s hometown before returning home to Houston. This year, they celebrate 34 years of marriage, two daughters, 2 sons-in-law and a comical grandson who is nearly 2. They’ve traveled across the country and around the world, they’ve taken on countless projects, and they did a bang-up job raising us girls.”

Community steps-up for pets By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader In 2015, The Purple Cat Resale, Thrift and Consignment Store opened at 2128 W. 34th Street, and with it, the future of Houston’s homeless pets changed for the better. The shop has been raising substantial sums for pet rescue since. At the end of July, The Purple Cat and its volunteers donated a full month’s sales to the Animal Justice League, or AJL, for pet spay and neuter surgeries in the immediate community. The sum of $6,300 will go a long way to help. It was nothing short of a full-blown community effort. Locals donated goods for resale, then locals bought items, and the money raised goes to vetting and re-homing the homeless pets loose in our community. The Animal Justice League works exclusively with pets from the area. Everyone wins, particularly the hundreds of unwanted who would suffer, starve and die without it. There are many fine animal rescue groups in Houston, but the nonprofit Purple Cat stands a cut above. It’s dedicated owner/operator Julia Long has organized a group that is completely volunteer. When most nonprofits report that “100 percent of the proceeds” go to their causes, they generally mean after basic costs are met. Long sought and found an anonymous sponsor who is underwriting the rent and utilities of the shop until the end of the year. Translation: 100 percent of the proceeds really do go directly to animals. Long, who works full time at the shop but has never

drawn a salary, operates The Purple Cat with about seven volunteers. It’s not easy as this active women is also deeply involved in rescuing. fostering and re-homing animals in her free time. (Free time?) “I founded the nonprofit agency under which we operate in 2001. Since then, we’ve become a grassroots group dedicated to helping the folks working in the trenches of pet rescue,” stated Long. “Many rescues are maintained by a handful of caring people. The animals are kept in private homes and rescuers often face big vet bills. We want to help with the expenses of the work, and this is how we can do it. It has always been our mission.” The Animal Justice League is no less admirable. It too is

an exclusively volunteer nonprofit operating with about 150 locals who are fostering homeless pets removed from our streets. AJL’s mission is to educate through outreach, and reduce the number of unwanted. “We will use all the money raised by The Purple Cat for spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations and medications for our fosters,” stated AJL’s Vice President, Amanda van Adrichen. “We are really, really grateful for the help and generosity.” For this month, Long has chosen Emancipet as the recipient of The Purple Cat’s sales. Emancipet is a nonprofit agency dedicated to making high-quality spay, neuter and veterinary care affordable

for pet owners. In 2016, the agency cared for more than 100,000 animals. How can you help these wonderful groups? “We always need fosters,” stated AJL’s van Adrichen. “Everyone is welcome. Just go to animaljusticeleague.org for more information.” “And we can always use donations at The Purple Cat, or stop in and shop,” added Long. “But when it gets right down to it, I say, ‘Help stop the problem of pet over population at its roots. Spay and neuter your damned pets’!” she concluded. We have never known anyone more committed to putting herself out of business, than Julia Long.

families as well,” she said. New leadership, fresh ideas To help implement the programs as well as the school’s 2017-2018 theme “What’s Cooking at Heights,” Berger has brought in several new members of the leadership team, including assistant principals Latreal Ballinger (who was on the Heights campus last year working with IB) and Greg Wagner, who joins Heights after years as a teacher at Bellaire High School. Additionally, a new AP Coordinator who will be working with AP teachers in perusing their curriculum and data trying to get students and teachers to higher level scores on their exams is joining Heights from Westside High School. Beronica Pickney, who was a classroom teacher at Heights last year, will now be working in the school’s IB department. “I’m looking forward to a great year, and I’m really excited about these new folks joining us, because new leadership brings new ideas to the campus — especially when I have new leaders coming from within the district,” Berger said. “It brings fresh eyes to the work we do, and we’re excited to be able to share what’s going on across our school.”

As the 2017-2018 school year inches ever closer, several local high schools are looking to hit the ground running with fresh ideas to further prepare their students for life after secondary education. Connie Berger has been the principal at Heights (formerly Reagan) High School for many years, and the school is held in high esteem. However, she acknowledged that no matter how successful past programs have been, continuing their (and their students’) success hinges on adapting fresh ideas, and the school seems to be well on its way through new initiatives and leadership. First and foremost at Heights (and across HISD) for 2017-2018 is “Literacy Across Curriculum,” a program that seeks to embed a true understanding of all aspects of literacy in every subject and every lesson. “In high school, literacy can sometimes fade in math and science—we’re really going full force in embedding literacy across all subject areas at the high school,” said Berger, who has assigned a designated literacy coach that will be working solely with teachers to help them embed literacy in courses. “When we say literacy, we’re not only talking about reading, we’re talking about the writing aspect as well. That’s something that

will always travel with the students everywhere.” In looking back at the school and district’s STAAR testing, Berger acknowledged that the writing typically manifested itself as one of the lowest areas, so the school has made it a point of focus. “What’s the one thing you always have to send in? An essay. We never want a student to not fill out a scholarship because they’re scared of writing essays,” she said. “Writing and reading never leaves you, so we’ve got to continue that now, and as they move forward to college. We want to make sure we’re speaking the same language across our schools — that’s the common thread that will pull the school together. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Heights already employs the MYP (Middle Year Program), the DY (Diploma Year) and now the Career and Technology program. That will hopefully go into effect around the spring semester. Finally, Berger said Heights has implemented a new focus on social emotional learning to meet the needs of not only students, but their families as well. “We hear so much about giving support to our students and their families, and I have a counselor I hired who is designated specifically for work with social-emotional issues with our students and possibly

SPX changes course so students thrive By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Students returning to St. Pius X High School are in for a bit of a culture shock when they receive their new schedules in the coming weeks. Since 1965, St. Pius X has strived to strengthen high school students mind, body and soul, and will enter the 2017-2018 with a slightly modified schedule aimed at creating an environment most conducive to that concept. “Our goal is for every student to thrive in this environment, and thrive from a multifaceted approach, SPX Head of School Carmen Armistead said. “We want our children to be their best self, academically, athletically, spiritually, emotionally and relationally. In prior years, SPX has operated on a traditional timetable or a “skinny schedule — seven periods about 45 minutes each. At the end of the day, teachers stuck around for tutorials, thereby, no extracurricular activities could begin until 4 p.m. “The goal was to have our young people go from the end of class time straight to 3:45 when teachers would be available for tutorials, Armistead said. “But we found that kids were just flat-out tired and didn’t want to go — if they didn’t have activities at 4, they just wanted to get out of the building. Panther Empower Hour In response, Armistead and her team spent the summer cooking up a new recipe for student success. What the school has done is put that tutorial time, as well as some club meeting time, in the center of the school day. “We’ve expanded from a standard 45-minute lunch period into a period that is an hour long. It will go on regularly scheduled time from 11:14 a.m. to 12:14 p.m, Armistead

said. Students’ periods, Armistead said, can be scheduled in varying structures. Students who need a tutorial in a certain subject or make up a test will attend that session during the first half of what Armistead called the “Panther Empower Hour, and then they can go to lunch. Or, they could go to lunch first, and then whatever meeting or tutorial is being offered in the second half on certain days. “We felt like there were not enough hours in the day, she said. “We’re looking at giving our young people time built into their school day so they can participate in clubs and other cocurricular activities, get extra help from teachers or make up work during the course of the day, so we’re not asking them to come when they’re least receptive to learning. Enabling SPX to create such a format, she said, is a making the schedule a modified block. On Monday, Tuesday and Friday, students will have a traditional schedule, only it will be eight periods in the day at about 44 minutes each period. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, students will have a block schedule, with periods 1,2,3 and 4 meeting for an hour and a half each, and periods 5,6,7 and 8 meeting on Thursday in the same format. Armistead believes such a format enables those classes which thrive in those longer time periods to do so, and more effectively educate students. “Our teachers are in the midst of massive training on how to teach in a different way and utilize that longer period to a learner’s best advantage, she said. “It’s building on what teachers do best, which is adjusting learning so that students can learn best.

graders called Veritas Prep, or an introduction to the SPX community culture and expectations as a college prep school. Seeing as SPX’s students hail from a variety of Houston spots, Armistead believes the curriculum can serve as a common thread to bond the newcomers. “We wanted to give those students something that would help them acclimate and become part of our St. Pius cul-

Clark/Kotzur Team

By Betsy Denson For The Leader There’s a new year-round swim team coming to Oak Forest. Head coach Marcela Portillo said she wanted to start the Oak Forest Swim Club because she saw a need and because she loves coaching. “My husband and I are new to the neighborhood and a lot of our neighbors told us that they were traveling far so that their children could participate in a swim team, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to bring something to the community and continue to do what I love,” said Portillo. Portillo learned to swim with the summer league Wahoo Swim Team in Friendswood and later coached there. She was previously the assistant coach for the varsity high school team at Incarnate Word Academy. “I’ve been coaching for about 10 years now,” she said. Portillo’s husband Peter Lundholm will co-coach. The team’s group couch is Krystal Johnson who has been working for the YMCA for eight years as a program coordinator and swim instructor in the aquatics department. A high school USA swimmer will also help out as a junior coach. To publicize the endeavor, Portillo used Nextdoor, made yard signs and dropped off flyers at local businesses. “The neighborhood has been very supportive and excited to have a swim club nearby,” she said. Portillo said that the goal is to build a competitive team. The team will be a USA Team under the USA Swimming umbrella. According to their

website, USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States. The Oak Forest Team will compete in USA meets and coaches are USA certified. “We plan on being part of a meet at least once a month depending on the amount of swimmers enrolled,” she said. Portillo stressed that she didn’t want to push swimmers into something they weren’t ready for. “Depending on the skill and background of the group we get, then we’ll get a meet, but it’s really about what the kids want as well,” she said. “We don’t want to discourage them. We want the swimmers to build enough confidence, and feel good about themselves.” Although the club is a year round opportunity, the year

is divided into three 4 month sessions and swimmers can participate in one or all of the sessions. Students from six months to 18 years are welcomed. The students on the younger end will be developing water familiarity with their parent and an instructor while the older swimmers will learn and develop strokes. The club has four levels of swimmers. For level one and two, the cost per session is $500, or $150 a month. For levels three and four the cost is $550, or $165 a month. There is also a registration fee of $180 to USA Swimming which includes a membership, a swim suit and a swim shirt. Because of the nature of Houston weather, Portillo wanted an indoor pool and said it was a challenge to secure one. Portillo reached out to local schools and HISD and

secured a spot at Waltrip High School who will offer their pool three hours a day for five days a week. For now, the club will be a part time endeavor for Portillo, who also runs a family business from home. “We are really excited to bring a swim team to the community and to see the swimmers grow,” said Portillo. “This is truly a passion of mine and I really want to create a safe and fun team for everyone.” A meet and greet will be held on August 19 near the pool at T.C. Jester Park. The coaches will bring pizza and hear from parents about what they want. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs. The group will also brainstorm a logo for the club. Senior EXP

September 27, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. SPJST Lodge 88 (15th & Beall)

The Leader is hosting a day-long event geared toward seniors in our community, and you’re invited. We’ve invited businesses all across the community to take part to provide information about issues that are important to you. There will be speakers attending to help with health care concerns, including the impact of the new Affordable Care Act, and how it impacts Medicare. We’ve invited professional finance planners who can help you take that dream trip or manage your fixed income better, and attorneys who will talk to you about any legal concerns you have. But this isn’t going to be all serious business, either. We’ll have breakfast in the morning and lunch in the afternoon.

The best part, besides the food, fun and fellowship is that it is all FREE! All you have to do is register.

What to expect at the 2017 Senior Expo: • FREE Admission • FREE Food & Drinks • Educational information on health, finances and legal concerns • A chance to meet experts who will offer free advice on a number of senior issues • An opportunity to mingle with friends
