When your healthy lifestyle goes awry The ABCs of ACLs

to have the surgery, Dr. Shani says, adding: “With these newer techniques, we can get children back to playing the sports that they love and feel like normal kids again.” Meanwhile, the occurrence of ACL injuries in females can be three to 10 times higher than in males, he says. In part that’s due to more females participating in more sports. Other factors are physiological and include their typically looser joints as well as wider-angled pelvis-to-knee biomechanics. The latter can affect the angle at which their feet meet the ground, adding further stress to the knees. Training programs can teach young female athletes to land correctly. Strengthening the hamstring muscles can also help. Dr. Shani also sees a lot of ACL injuries in older adults who have been punching through the physical activities on their so-called “Bucket List.” A typical example is someone who decided to do a marathon but was not physically ready to do so. Similarly, people getting back in shape who decide to resume a previous sport often forget how hard an activity it was. “That’s when it can get dangerous,” Dr. Shani says. In either scenario, he says, “It’s important to prepare yourself.”

by Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader Could having torn an ACL become a rite of passage in today’s athletic lifestyle? “It’s a common injury – and a common reconstruction,” says Raj Shani, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital and The IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute as well as an assistant professor at UTHealth Medical School. Among sports enthusiasts, exercise buffs and weekend warriors working to regain their fitness, injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament continue to send a steady but limping stream of patients to sports medicine specialists. Last year, for example, an estimated 200,000 ACL procedures were performed nationally, according to the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Fortunately, according to Dr. Shani, ACL reconstruction techniques have evolved over the past 10 years to better replicate the knee’s biomechanics, so treatment and recovery ultimately can enable a return to exercise, athletics and even high-level competition.

Dr. Shani’s preventive advice:

Staying connected

The ACL is one of four ligaments in the knee. Connected to the femur (thigh) and tibia (shin), it plays a stabilizing role that helps limit knee rotation and the forward movement of the lower leg. Today’s ACL repairs better replicate that natural positioning, says Dr. Shani, and better restore both sources of its motion-limiting function. ACL injuries can happen across the spectrum of exercise and athletics, regardless of an athlete’s age. Often thought of as a contact injury, the occurrence is more likely to be caused by non-contact mechanisms, such as misaligned landing of the feet on a surface, says Dr. Shani. A sudden stop, twist, pivot or hyperextension can stretch or tear the ACL. Surgical repairs replace the ligament’s bone-to-bone connections via a centimeter-sized tunnel drilled into the bones, he explained.

An equal opportunity injury

Dr. Shani says the most common ACL patient is someone

(Photo from Memorial Hermann) having a good time in the pursuit of staying in shape. As children have become involved in sports programs at younger ages, the incidence of ACL injuries has increased, accounting for about 30 percent of all knee injuries in children, according to the International Journal of Orthopedics. Younger children with ACL injuries pose a particular challenge, he says, since they’re still growing. Reconstruction techniques are finding better ways to work with and around growth plates, when warranted. This is particularly important as children previously were told to wait and not play sports until they were old enough

* Work with a trainer or coach and work into the goal slowly. The longer you’ve been away, the more you must prep – as well as build in rest and recovery between training sessions. * Prepare mentally and nutritionally, and that includes hydration levels. * Have the right “tools,” meaning proper shoes, equipment and a brace, if needed. “These small things can have an impact on your bio-mechanics,” he says. Dr. Shani completed his fellowship at Emory Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center and begins his affiliation with Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in September. Within sports medicine, his specialties include the care and repair of the shoulder, knee and ankle. Dr. Shani, who grew up in Memorial and Jersey Village, says he gravitated to sports medicine because it’s an opportunity to care for patients of all ages. He understands that being active in sports is an integral part of staying healthy.

Cooking healthy and seasonal, for clients or family by Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Fellow members of her Community Supported Agriculture delivery co-op know Candlelight Plaza’s Megan Rasmussen as someone who can always come up with a tasty new way to use produce – even when, due to nature’s bounty – there’s a lot of it. Her talent is also her business as a personal chef. “I make a variety of healthy, delicious foods available to people who either don’t cook, or don’t have time to cook,” said Rasmussen, who plans menus based on her clients’ preferences and dietary needs and then prepares and packages three to five different meals at their home. She also has a discounted service where she prepares an assortment of meals that can be frozen and placed directly in a family’s slow cooker when needed. Starting next month, Rasmussen will be selling healthy baked goods at the weekly Farm Stand on Wakefield near Golf, in the neighborhood. She’s able to do this because of the new Texas Cottage Food Law, which allows the sale of certain homemade foods, which do not require refrigeration. Rasmussen said her love of cooking came from her upbringing in South Louisiana in a family of cooks. “My dad grew up cooking with his French grandmother, and playing in his grandfather’s bakery on Magazine Street in New Orleans. My parents had a very active gourmet group while I was growing up,” she said. During her third year as a practicing lawyer in Baton Rouge, she said she rediscovered her love of cooking and baking as a way to relieve stress. She took the Texas Bar in preparation for finding a job in Houston but ended up switching gears entirely. “My first client--a

Megan Rasmussen is a personal chef who makes healthy – and delicious – meals a priority. (Photo by Betsy Denson) former attorney herself--found my website and referred me to a friend. The rest is history.” In addition to cooking for clients, Rasmussen enjoys preparing meals for her family. “Besides always knowing what my family is eating, I’m relaxed and happy when I’m tucked away in the kitchen, and it’s a love that is easily shared with all my family and friends,” she said. While she understands that people might feel that healthy eating requires too much work, she says that it only requires a small amount of planning to make a homemade meal in place of an “old standby.” “If you keep your pantry and

freezer stocked with healthy ingredients, it’s possible to find a quick recipe using what you have on hand,” she said. Her pantry staples include low sodium chicken broth, evaporated milk, bread crumbs, canned beans, canned pumpkin, diced and crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, coconut milk and assorted grains/pasta. Of course the biggest hurdles for many parents are their finicky little ones who could make do with pizza and hot dogs into perpetuity. “For me getting the kids involved is key--in even the smallest ways,” said Rasmussen. “I’ve offered cooking lessons where kids

cook dinner for the family, and it’s fun to see how excited they are to present their work to their parents. In our house the oldest has to take at least one bite of everything, and that’s easier when she has helped make it.” She doesn’t believe in hiding every vegetable but rather keeping things small yet identifiable. “I also refuse to make something different for the kids on weeknights,” said Rasmussen. “If I can prepare their part of dinner early, I do, or they’ll get leftovers from the previous night’s meal. They may not be eating exactly what we are eating but it’s close enough that they don’t know any different.” Although her two children are good eaters she says she’s not immune to the nights when her oldest says she doesn’t like dinner as soon as she sits down and the toddler drops much of his food on the floor. “I do realize they’re young and their tastes and opinions can still change weekly,” she said. She emphasizes that parents help set the tone for their youngsters’ attitude about food. Rasmussen may not be crazy about the herring her husband eats as a snack but she keeps it to herself. And as for the food she does like: “You don’t have to jump for joy at every meal, but show that you like [it] without making a big deal about it. If they see us enjoying the same foods they’re more likely to try it.” Rasmussen’s web site is http:// www.mychefmegan.com/. She is not currently able to accept new personal chef clients, but all baking services are still available. She’ll soon join The Farm Stand, which runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday in the 900 block of Wakefield.

ham’s Home Sweet Farm CSA delivery. This summer she’s gotten a lot of eggplant, onions and potatoes. “I decided to use them with the canned diced tomatoes (I buy Muir Glen because they’re BPAfree), and grass-fed ground beef I always have on hand to make a deconstructed ‘Moussaka.’ The kids ate it up. I haven’t included it in the ingredients but I may have also thrown in some fresh spinach the first time I made it.”

Megan’s “Moussaka”

1 lb lean ground beef (or lamb or turkey--your preference) 1 med eggplant, diced (peeled or unpeeled) 2 small yukon gold potatoes (diced the same size as the eggplant) 1 onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 can diced tomatoes (14 oz) 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1/2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp dried oregano 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional) Preheat oven to 425. Toss eggplant and potatoes with a little bit of olive oil and salt. Spread on a baking sheet and roast while you work on the next step, being sure to keep an eye on them and toss them occasionally. Brown the beef over mediumhigh heat and add the onions and garlic after it has broken up a bit. Sauté everything until the beef is browned and the onions are nice and soft. Drain any grease, if desired. Add the tomatoes, parsley, cinnamon and oregano and simmer to let the tomatoes break down a bit and the flavors develop. When the eggplant and potatoes are browned and tender, add them to the pot and simmer a few minutes more. Stir in feta (if using), season to taste with salt and pepper and serve.

Nightclub Cardio®: benefits and no sleaze If you walk down the hallway at the Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA (1234 W. 34th, 77018) on Wednesday or Friday mornings, you’re likely to wonder if you’ve been teleported to a dance club in the heart of Montrose. The thumping bass, dimmed lights and the sparkle of the disco ball are evident before you even approach the group exercise room door. Not to worry, you’re still firmly planted at the YMCA--a hub for community, fitness and fellowship, located in the heart of Garden Oaks. What you’re witnessing is a new fitness class offered called Nightclub Cardio®. Touted as a “cardio dance party that fuses exercise with dance moves,” Nightclub Cardio® is the brainchild of Houstonian entrepreneur, Jennifer Brugh, who was interested in finding a way to get fit--dancing to fun music--while taking the cigarette smoke and unwanted “romantic” advances (that often come from visits to real nightclubs) out of the equation. Nightclub Cardio® is a fitness class that aims to bring exercise back to the basics, so that participants can focus on having fun and working up a sweat without struggling through complex choreography. At the front of the class at the Foster Family YMCA is instructor, Shannon Gibson. Having taught Zumba Fitness® at the Foster Family YMCA for the past year, Gibson was interested in offering another form of dance fitness to gym members. Her bubbly, approachable personality and engaging dance moves are paramount to the increased interest that the class has garnered in recent months. A typical class is often comprised of a decent percentage of young, athletic 20-somethings, 30-ish PTA mom-types, many of Ad # ????? the Foster Family YMCA’s famous

Jennifer Brugh created a workout that’s as fun as dancing in clubs, without having to deal with the unwanted approaches and excessive drinking. Active Older Adults, (but don’t let that fool you into thinking that you’re too fit for this class) as well as a hearty sprinkling of men-all sweating and gulping water-while smiling from ear to ear. The appeal of Nightclub Cardio® is universal, weaving together generations of YMCA members, from far and wide, with a fun workout that doesn’t actually feel much like “work” at all. As with most dance fitness classes, one can expect to burn anywhere from 500 to 800 calories in the 55 minute-long class. The music ranges from hip-hop to disco; from top-40 hits to belly dancing songs...and even some swingdance-type numbers thrown in, for good measure. Gibson stresses, for anyone trying the class for the first time, that it’s OK to be you. “I don’t care about perfection. I want them to add their own flavor or spice to the moves and get in touch with their inner dancer.” She adds, “This may sound whimsical, but I believe that music and dance fulfill primal needs, just as water and food do. We live in a society filled with technology and to-do lists. It is important to not only nourish our bodies with good food, but nourish our souls with good energy and exercise.” Garden Oaks resident (and mother of 3) Morgan Shields discovered Nightclub Cardio® at the Foster Family YMCA and instantly fell in love. Shields had known for some time that she wanted to pur-

sue a fitness instructor certification, but was hoping to be able to teach a class that brought joy and fun to people’s lives--enter Nightclub Cardio®. She recently took the plunge to become certified to teach the class and she now leads the newly-added Sunday afternoon class at the Y. Shields and Gibson agree: The energy and enthusiasm in the class is addicting and contagious. “My favorite thing about the class is the feeling of being at a party, or that you are out dancing with a bunch of your girlfriends. And of course you are getting a great workout and burning a ton of calories while at this ‘party’,” said Shields. Gibson adds, “Once I hit ‘play’ on my iPod, the energy and endorphins begin building and the room is suddenly transformed into a nightclub atmosphere. The synergy is better than any high you can buy and it’s good for you.” Nightclub Cardio is currently offered at the Foster Family YMCA on Wednesday mornings at 10 am; Friday mornings at 9 a.m. and

A quick internet search yielded a few Houstonarea veterinary practices that treat pot-bellied pigs. Aside from an annual exam and vaccinations, a pot-bellied pig needs to be spayed or neutered, wormed several times a year and have their feet trimmed properly. by Molly Sue McGillicutty When folks are in the market for a pet, it’s only natural to gravitate toward dogs and cats. But, potbellied pigs (including mini and micro pigs) can make fabulous indoor and outdoor pets as well. According to Philippa Sprake, a clinical professor at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, “In addition to being highly intelligent and affectionate, pigs are social animals with their own personalities.” Before you start squealing about wanting a pig for a pet, first things first: It’s extremely important that you check with your local homeowner’s association, as well as your home’s zoning regulations to ensure that pigs may be kept on your property. While great indoor pets, (they can even be litterbox trained) they do need outdoor time and space as well. Pigs can be extremely noisy and moderately destructive--due to their “rooting” instinct, which causes them to dig in the ground with their snout, searching for food and obtaining iron from the soil. Also, in warmer locales, such as here in Texas, pigs need fans and kiddie pools or shallow ponds to wallow in to cool off. They don’t call them pigs for nothing: According to Sprake, “The biggest problem veterinarians see in pet pigs usually comes from owners providing an inapAd # BL-February propriate diet. Neighbors: landmark birthday, lots of Scout trips by Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@sbcglobal.net Happy birthday to the beautiful and the lovely Rose Vento of Shepherd Park Terrace who celebrated her 85th birthday recently. Friends and family send their love and blessings. Shepherd Park Plaza teen Emma Barrett claims U.M. Army (United Methodist Action ReachOut Mission by Youth) is by far the best camp ever. More than 50 high school students and adults paid for the privilege of traveling to go help those who can’t help themselves. The group went to Carthage, Texas, and completed 17 repair and building projects such as sheetrock repairs, porch building, wheelchair ramp building/ repairs, painting, etc. Other area teens who were part of the team are Leah Porterfield, Adelaide Leonard, Clare Frankel, Gunter Bax, Trevor Stoneburner, and Codi Cox. Bill Mallin, an Oak Forest neighbor and a part-time fitness instructor at Studio Fitness in the Heights, recently put out the word he would hold an impromptu, free class at T.C. Jester Park. About 26 men and women responded and showed up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 7:15 on a Saturday morning to attend the class Bill calls “The Hill.” Bill’s enthusiasm is contagious as

he explains the class boosts overall cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and fat loss without losing muscle mass. He sets up a few different courses that require physical and mental abilities, challenging both the body and the mind. It looks like the class will become a regular Saturday morning event which next occur on Aug. 17, and Bill plans to charge $2 per person, which will be donated to a local charity each month. Boy Scout Troop 604 recently drove to Camp Arrowhead near Marshfield, Missouri for summer camp. The 12 boys (ages ranging from 10-16) and five adult leaders spent seven days at Camp Arrowhead and two days at Blanchard Springs Recreational Area near Mountain View, Ark. Troop Leader Ed Sherwood said, “The highlight of the trip was definitely going to Blanchard Springs. The countryside is quite breathtaking with lots of green hills and beautiful spring-fed waters. We camped next to a 100-foot rock bluff complete with its own cave, toured the stunning caverns, and swam in the cold, crystal clear waters of the spring. It was hard to pack up and come back to this urban jungle.” At Camp Arrowhead the Troop ate the typical “summer camp foods” prepared by camp kitchen staffers. Unfortunately, the portions were very small so Assistant Scoutmasters Seeton Pollock and David Jackson stepped up and wowed

the Troop with awesome desserts made in dutch ovens to keep the Troop from going to bed hungry. To raise funds for camping trips, other activities and equipment, the Troop holds barbecue brisket sales twice a year (the next one is set for October). This year they also held a garage sale of donated items which helped pay for the 15-passenger van rental for this summer’s trip. In other Boy Scout news from the neighborhoods, we have a tale of high adventure. Two of our neighbors, Zach and Kevin Dunn, son and father, are members of Boy Scout Troop 99 chartered out of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. They were part of a crew of eight sent to Philmont Scout Ranch in July. Crew 708-S (Sierra) trekked over an amazing 80 miles in 11 days through some of the most rugged and trackless terrain Philmont has to offer. Zach was the crew’s Chaplain’s Aide and Kevin was the lead Adult

Waltrip football’s moving to the West Coast by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com Waltrip High second-year football coach Milton Dailey said the Rams will pick up the balanced West Coast Offense, in favor the Spread they ran last season. “(It’s difficult) to run the Spread when you lose a 2,000-yard receiver like Chris Maloney,” Dailey said. Maloney is now a freshman at Northeastern State, an NCAA Division II school in Tahlequah, Okla. The Rams, who began fall practice on Monday, have more balance this season, according to Dailey. Senior quarterback Tralon Johnson was a cornerback last season, and he appears to be the frontrunner in the pocket. “He didn’t have any competition for the job (over the summer),” Dailey said. “A couple of kids will probably give him a challenge.” The Rams, who finished 5-5 last season and lost to Stratford in the

first round of the UIL Class 4A playoffs, will open the season at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 against Pasadena High at Delmar-Tusa Stadium. Not having a Zero Week game could be an advantage for the Rams as the players continue to get acclimated to the new offense. They’ll have an intrasquad scrimmage on campus at 9 a.m. Saturday. The defense will remain in a 34 set, while the offense will have senior fullback Josh Helton, and running backs, juniors Malik Jarman and Tristan Gentry and sophomore Chucky Graves, in the backfield, running behind what Dailey called “a super, seasoned offensive line” anchored by seniors Jake Reece, Darius Ervin and junior Carlos Carreon. “If Helton gets to the second level, he can get to the outside,” Dailey said. Reagan, last season’s district runner-up, is widely projected to win the Class 4A-District 21 Championship. Last season, the

coming. “Reagan may have more depth, but we’re going to give everyone a run for their money,” Dailey said.

Fifty Fifty Acorn Golf, a driving range that’s being revitalized by Todd Amy, Billy Bush and Linny Hoang at 5050 Acorn Drive, plans to apply for an alcohol license. There’s been some questions from the community over whether they can serve alcohol there. But the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission states that an establishment serving alcohol must be 300 feet from a church and 1,000 feet from a school. Saint John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church, 5402 Acorn St., is located between 400 and 500 feet from the driving range. Fifty Fifty may be interested in serving food in the future, according to Amy, but they’re currently exploring the option of having food trucks come out on certain 11.625x10.5 Leader Ad_Layout 1 7/15/13 nights.

Athlete Spotlight: St. Pius X graduate Briana Reid by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com University of Tennessee-Chattanooga outside hitter Briana Reid, a 2012 St. Pius X graduate, has a request for a former television principal to attend the Moccasins’ home game against University of Tennessee-Knoxville on Sept. 5. “(Dennis Haskins who plays) Mr. Belding (on “Saved by The Bell) comes to all of the UTC basketball games,” Reid said. “He hasn’t come to any volleyball games, but hopefully he will this year. We have a really big game against Tennessee, and hopefully, everyone will come.” Haskins is an alum of the school located near the borders of Alabama and Georgia, but it’s Reid, 17, who’s currently making an impact for UTC. She made the Southern Conference all-freshman team and was twice named the Conference Freshman of the Week, finishing with 234 kills and 200 digs last season. “I just want to get back out on the court and do my thing,” Reid said. “I had a really good freshman year. I have to build on that.” Reid doesn’t turn 18 until next month. She attended the Montessori School of Downtown Houston and was advanced enough to skip half of both first and second grade. You grew up in southwest Houston. How’d you choose St. Pius X? “I had a lot of friends who were going to St. Pius X. I really loved the volleyball. It was between St. Pius X and Westbury Christian, and Pius was the better decision for me.” How’d you choose UTC over Howard, Tulsa and Wichita State? “The coach called me and said we heard about you and offered a full scholarship. My parents decided it’d be OK if we went on a visit. I went there and fell in love. It reminded me of my high school. Everything was so family-oriented. I could see myself having a great career here.” Do you enjoy playing in the Southern Conference? “I love it. This year, we have a great opportunity to win conference, which is exciting. We actually have good competition and good team play. It’s a good game every time we step on the court, which is something you don’t always get (in every conference).” How did four years of varsity volleyball at St. Pius X prepare

LHN alum Moran proves himself in pro ball

Lutheran High North graduate Luke Moran by Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

St. Pius X graduate Briana Reid you for the college level? “I did a lot of my growing up in volleyball. I learned to take responsiblity and become a leader on the team, which transferred to the rest of my life. I’ll always love Pius. I go back when I go home all of the time.” What are you studying and what are your future plans? “I’m an English major (focusing on) Creative Writing. I want to go to law school, ideally Stanford, but I’m keeping my options open. I’ve always been really compassionate about helping people, and law has been really intriguing to me.” What do you think of Lookout Mountain? “Once you get to the top the view, is beautiful. Chattanooga is Ad # 36774 a beautiful city.”

Luke Moran, a 2010 Lutheran High North graduate, knows how to overcome obstacles, and it’s helped him become a professional baseball player. In the fall of 2006, Moran didn’t make the Cypress Woods freshman team. He transfered to Lutheran North the next semester and had a stellar four-year career. “You can always get our of your comfort zone,” Moran said. “Don’t stay in your comfort zone. You can always change. “I liked LHN a lot. It’s a Lutheran school, and we had chapel every Wednesday and some type of religious class every day.” Moran, 21, is a right-handed

pitcher for the Billings Mustangs, a Pioneer League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds who drafted him in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. The Montana-based franchise plays in a rookie league. This season, he’s 2-2 with a 4.71 earned run average, 30 strikeouts and just six walks. A TAPPS all-state selection at LHN, Moran led the Lions to a state semifinal appearance as a junior in 2009. He received an athletic and academic scholarship to the University of Houston. St. Pius X head baseball coach Adam Massiatte coached Moran at LHN in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
