Put a checkup on your back-to-school checklist Houston Methodist Hospital For The Leader

Directory

Dust off your daily planner: Backto-school time means getting back to a routine, busy schedules and long to-do lists. But the season also offers a fresh start, making it a great time to take stock of your family’s health and ensure that everyone is up to date on exams, screenings and health goals. Not sure why or when you should begin? We’ve got you covered. For mom Moms usually put the needs of everyone else before their own. Be sure these screenings are on your to-do list. • Pap test. This test looks for cancer in the cervix and can save your life. If detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable. When to get it: After age 21, get a Pap test every three years. Once you hit 30, you can be tested once every five years. Talk to your doctor about getting an HPV test at the same time. • Mammogram. These X-ray images are your first line of defense against breast cancer. Screening mammograms lead to early detection, which reduces the number of deaths from breast cancer. As screening rates have risen, the death rate has gone down — 34 percent since 1990. When to get it: Schedule an annual mammogram starting at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend you begin screenings earlier. For dad Men are known for avoiding doctor’s appointments. Not this year! Here’s what you need to know about the screening for the most common cancer in men. • Prostate cancer screening. One

in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Risk factors include being age 65 or older or having a family history of prostate cancer, abnormal prostate cells or certain genome changes. Depending on your risk, your doctor may recommend a digital rectal exam or a blood test to measure the amount of the substance prostatespecific antigen, which can indicate prostate cancer. When to get it: Houston Methodist recommends that men over 50 discuss the PSA blood test with their doctors. African-American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should talk with their physicians about starting screenings at age 45. For kids Instill healthy habits in your chil-

dren by scheduling these appointments. • Sports physical. If your teens will be joining a team (or two or three) this school year, they’ll need a doctor’s approval to participate. Your child’s primary care physician can refer you to a sports medicine physician or orthopedics specialist, who can address sports-specific issues like proper nutrition and hydration, injury prevention, training and good form. When to get it: Although school district rules vary, one physical at the end of summer will typically cover your child for the school year. • Immunizations. Vaccines are a powerful tool for keeping your kids — and the kids around you — healthy. By the time they hit school age, most children have had most of their immunizations, but there are

a few to keep tabs on as they reach their teens. When to get it: • Flu shot – Annually • Meningococcal conjugate vaccine – Age 11 and booster at age 16 For more information on health screenings and immunizations, please refer to resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or talk to a trusted health care provider. The team of physicians at Houston Methodist Primary Care Group in The Heights is dedicated to providing personalized care in prevention and wellness for you and your family. ClassPass opens door to new fitness possibilities By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com

If you are looking to add some variety to your fitness routine, there’s a new monthly subscription service that has quite the following in the area. ClassPass provides access to a network of boutique fitness studios and gyms. Available in more than 2,500 cities around the world, including Houston, Dallas and Austin, ClassPass launched in Houston several years ago. The program’s local devotees are many. “I love ClassPass,” Cara Ramelow said. “I’ve been using it for a long time now. I get bored doing the same thing all the time, so it’s perfect for me. Also, the cost of classes are significantly cheaper than what you would pay at a studio.” Selena Crochet is a longtime member of the Foster Family YMCA who uses ClassPass to try different classes at a reduced rate. “I adore (the Y’s) instructors,” Crochet said. “But when my schedule doesn’t allow me to make it to one of their classes, ClassPass is a great way to ‘fill in’ that gap.” Kinsey Livingston, senior director of partnerships at ClassPass, said the company was founded by Payal Kadakia after she struggled to find a dance class to take after work in New York City. Kadakia never made it to a class, and her experience was the seed for a business model that allows members to choose from yoga, cycling, Pilates, barre, running, strength training, dance, sports, videos and more. “It’s a great way to discover new fitness studios, try new workouts and find the perfect routine for your lifestyle,” Livingston said. Some who use the service worry they undercut local businesses. Livingston said studios list their excess spots on ClassPass and are paid for every reservation ClassPass facilitates. “It’s completely free for partners

Re/forme Lagree Studio owner Meghan McAlpine at Revive’s Ella Oaks development said she welcomes ClassPass users but hopes to convert those users to re/forme clients. “We have actually found a lot of success in converting ClassPass users to clients once they realize how reasonable our prices are, and once they realize that the results they see from re/forme come with consistency in their routine, coming three to four times per week, which just is not economical through ClassPass,” McAlpine said. Livingston said ClassPass partners with all types of fitness companies, from small businesses to global brands, fitness studios and big box gyms. ClassPass users can use an

Molly Vitek said the service has inspired her fitness on the road. “I’ve used it in multiple cities,” Vitek said. “It always makes me work out when I am going to have credits left at the end of the cycle, and I get to try new places.” For more information, visit https://classpass.com/locations/ houston.

Take heed to mindful eating By Shana Tatum statum@wellness-collaborative.com

The mindfulness movement has gained momentum over the last several years, though this ancient practice is more than just a buzzword on magazine covers. The practice of mindfulness can bring peace and ease to those that long for a more intentional way of life. Its benefits aren’t reserved for the meditation cushion, but can be applied at the dinner table, too. Mindful eating has been described as the process of paying attention to the way you eat without judgment or critique. It can help you improve your relationship with food as well as bolster your mind and body. It provides a healthy and considerate way to connect to your needs for food while listening to hunger cues whether emotional or physical. It promotes freedom, balance, choice and acceptance of what is. Mindful eating has shown to provide benefits such as: creating focus on the interconnectedness of the planet, people and our diverse cultures; giving an opportunity to tune in to your physical and emotional needs; providing clues into true hunger and satiety; empowering you to make better choices for your health; offering opportunities to feel cared for and nurtured; and bringing awareness and possibility for behavior change from a reactive and repetitive pattern to one that is intentional. Can you recall your last meal? Can you describe its flavor, texture and colors? Can you remember how you felt while or after eating? It can be difficult for some to get started with a mindful eating practice, especially in our fast-paced lives. Small steps every day can make a difference. Learning to trust your instincts and that of your body will assist you as you continue the process. A few ways you can begin to practice mindful eating are: • Preparing your meal. Many of us are rushed and in a hurried state at the dinner hour. When you slow down to enjoy the smells, notice the textures and colors of what you are cooking, it primes the body for the release of key enzymes necessary for digestion.

Women’s Health Directory Directory of Local Female Health Service Professionals Dr. Stephanie Fulton

• No electronic zone. Put your phone away and make space for your food. • Eat sitting down. It sounds strange to say, but many people eat standing up, on the run or in the car. Sit. Take a breath. Think of the farmer that worked to bring you the nourishment you are about to enjoy or the loving hands that prepared the food on your plate. Give thanks for the meal before you begin eating. • Use your senses. Assess you hunger through all your senses, beginning first with your eyes. How does this look? What colors do you see? Then through your nose. What fragrance is present? Do you detect herbs or spices? Then with your ears. Do you hear crunching or sizzle? Are there other sounds? Then with your mouth. What bitter or salty, sweet or sour flavors do you detect? By slowly considering all your senses, you can slowly enjoy your meal more intentionally. • Rest your fork between bites. Set the fork down between bites and chew your food well. Consider the texture and flavor of foods in your mouth before you pick up the fork again for another bite. When we slow down and prepare a special meal for ourselves or share it with a loved one, we gain more than just the nutrients in our food. We can set intentions of gratitude and appreciation for the quality time with loved ones and the thoughtful food that was prepared for us. Through a mindful eating practice you can begin to be more curious about your relationship with food and the way you feed the body. Pausing with intentionality and considering the food that gives nourishment will go a long way to maintaining good health.

THE OBITUARIES.

How to combat muscle atrophy in senior pets Dear Tabby, I have a 14-year-old Irish Setter who seems to be losing muscle tone in his back legs. Is there anything that can be done to slow this down or stop it in its tracks? Concerned about Muscle Tone in Oak Forest Dear Concerned about Muscle Tone, As dogs get older, changes in diet and amount of exercise can cause a reduction in muscle mass -- most often in their most muscular areas, such as their hind legs. While age-related muscle atrophy is sometimes just a fact of growing old for your pet, there are a few things you can do to ease any discomfort related to this loss of muscle mass as well as things you can do to slow down the muscle atrophy.

Dietary changes One way to help your senior pet with muscle atrophy is to make sure he’s getting adequate protein for his age. As dogs age, their nutritional needs change. Dogs have a harder time metabolizing protein later in life, so a special diet with easily processed proteins may help him to retain the needed protein for muscle maintenance. Ask your vet for guidance in finding a nutritionally appropriate food for your senior dog.

Supplements for muscle atrophy Assuming your dog’s muscle atrophy isn’t caused by any underlying medical conditions (a visit to the vet can rule that out), with more attention to his diet and exercise, you should be able to greatly reduce the muscle atrophy. Some experts also recommend supplements to slow muscle atrophy. Fish oil is a supplement that is beneficial to dogs for a variety of health concerns, muscle atrophy among them. Fish oil also helps to lubricate your dog’s joints, which can make exercise more comfortable

Exercise to build muscle Just like with humans, diet and exercise are among the most important factors in combating many age-related ailments. For dogs, exercise has a whole bevy of benefits, paramount among them, muscle building and maintenance. If your dog doesn’t already have regular exercise in his life, start slowly (perhaps with a walk about the block) and build upon this regimen until your dog is getting about 30 minutes of brisk activity every day.

for your pooch, which in turn helps to build muscle. While muscle atrophy is common in your dog’s later years, you can help make his remaining time more comfortable (and engaging) by making sure he’s on a good, age-appropriate diet and exercising him often. The time spent improving your pet’s health will strengthen your bond and help you to make the most of your time with your four-legged friend.
