Since the dawn of humankind, people have enjoyed of the health benefits of honey. The Smithsonian states that honey’s earliest recorded use as medicine comes from Sumerian clay tablets, where it was included in 30 percent of prescriptions. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans also used honey in treatments. It is little wonder that some forward-thinking locals are looking back in time for honey’s healing qualities. Last October, The Leader published a story about the the
Rainbow Lodge when owner Donnette Hansen introduced three beehives to her magnificent garden on her Ella Boulevard property. Last week, Hansen celebrated her first yield. “We harvested 45 pounds of Honey,” Hanson said. “We are not selling it at this time, but we’ve already added it to recipes at the restaurant. We are serving a honey-glazed pheasant and honey-glazed apricots. And we offer every person who comes in, a little sample of raw honey comb when they arrive. Honey is very good for people, and we want to share it.” Indeed, medical experts agree that honey contains

flavonoids and antioxidants which reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. Honey can soothe many gastrointestinal disorders; it has been used throughout history as a topical anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal agent, and honey can reduce a cough and sore throat irritation. According to Hansen, beekeeping itself also has a soothing quality on the human spirit. The restaurateur loves to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee in the mornings and watch her bees work. “They are mysSee Honey P. 2B

No one needs a thermometer to know it’s hot – you just have to step outside. The hotter it gets though the better you need to protect yourself against both heat exhaustion and heat stroke – and you need to recognize the symptoms so that you can get treatment before things get serious. Memorial Hermann’s Dr. Minesh Desai is board certified in internal medicine and has an office on 19th Street. He said that he’s seen one patient in last two weeks with heat exhaustion and two with heat stroke. Dr. Desai says the two share similar characteristics like dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse and fatigue, but with heat stroke, the patient has a temperature of 103 degrees or higher and is dry, where someone suffering from heat exhaustion will be sweaty, moist and pale, and their skin will feel cooler. Risk factors for heat related illnesses include an age above 65, or having a history of heart disease or mental illness. Those using diuretics are already at risk for dehydration. However, Dr. Desai says that anyone is at risk and needs to take certain precautions like wearing loose light clothing, wide brimmed hats and at least an SPF 30+ if you are going to be outside. In addition, limit outdoor activities to times the sun is not at its peak. The consumption of alcohol and sugary drinks outdoors predisposes you to heat related illness. So enjoy your margarita indoors. If you are outside and feel like something’s wrong, listen to your instincts. “The key thing is to get indoors,” said Dr. Desai. “Then to hydrate with water and let someone else know you’re not feeling well so you can get medical treatment if needed. If there’s any hesitation, it’s best to get treatment.” For heat stroke patients, Dr. Desai says they will wet the patient’s clothing to add moisture and aid them in cooling down. If they can’t get the patient’s temperature down fast enough, then it’s a trip to the emergency room. Protect your children And it may not just be you that you need to watch out for. Children are at increased risk according to Dr. Kay Leaming-Van Zandt, Medical Director at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. “For various reasons, children do not adapt as effectively as adults when exposed to high climatic heat stress,” she said. “Children have a greater sur-

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one in seven deaths. Prevention and detection are critical to saving lives. Now, residents of Greater Heights can conveniently access comprehensive heart care at the Center for Advanced Cardiology, located on the campus of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. The Center’s affiliated cardiologists diagnose and treat a wide variety of heart health needs using many of the latest technological advancements. Leader Expert
Demystifying metabolic mysteries with GYMGUYZ For The Leader We’ve all met people who are seemingly blessed with a “fast” metabolism and have no trouble at all when it comes to weight loss. In fact, they may even have trouble keeping weight on. On the contrary, we’ve all encountered people who can’t seem to lose weight no matter what. They eat well and exercise regularly but still the scale doesn’t budge. What’s going on? First of all, let’s understand what metabolism is. In very simplistic terms, metabolism is the rate at which we burn calories. Your metabolism is like a furnace that drives and regulates every bodily function, including the life sustaining ones like respiration, digestion and circulation. Your metabolism also regulates your energy expenditure for activities like walking, talking, eating, thinking and you just being you.
Let’s think for a minute of you “just being you.” Are you often lethargic, tired or just plain “out of it?” Have you experienced weight gain or had trouble losing weight in spite of eating well and exercising? Sometimes there’s a very obvious answer like you didn’t get enough sleep, you haven’t eaten all day or you’re just stressed out on a given day. However, when you’re living in a chronic state of lethargy or perhaps gaining weight in spite of your efforts, you may be experiencing the effects of a slow or depressed metabolism. In short, your furnace has malfunctioned. Check out the following tips to get your metabolic flames fanning again. Metabolic Boosters Smart Starts: Don’t skip breakfast. Your body is largely depleted after a night’s sleep. Your metabolism will tank if you don’t refuel. Eat a nutrient dense meal that includes
whole grains, healthy fat and protein. Protein also supports the growth of muscle tissue which is crucial to maintaining a high metabolism. “Pick Things Up & Put Them Down” You guessed it - strength Train: Studies show that we lose five to seven percent of muscle mass with every passing decade. This loss of muscle directly impacts our metabolism. The good news? Preserve and increase muscle mass by strength training two to three times a week. More lean muscle means more calories burned, even when you’re sleeping. B Smart: The B vitamins which include B6, B12, thiamin, folate and niacin among others support metabolism and energy production. High quality sources of B vitamins include whole grains, eggs, spinach, beans, bananas, broccoli, turkey and chicken. Snack Attack: Don’t for-
contains only 64 calories. Additionally, it’s fat-free, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free. The golden syrup’s composition is roughly 80 percent carbohydrates, 18 percent water, and two percent vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, all of which serve to keep a body healthy. Honey may also combat allergies. Locally produced honey contains pollen spores lifted by bees from local plants. Consuming a tea-spoonful a day of locally produced honey introduces a small amount of allergen into our systems. These spores can activate the immune system and, over time, can build up natural immunity. Sadly, honeybees are in danger and need our help. Experts agree that about one third of our agriculture relies on the bee for pollination, but American bees are dying in droves. Scientists first reported massive bee die-offs the 1990s. In 2013, data reported that the average beekeeper
had lost 45 percent of his or her colonies. “Years of the use of chemicals in agriculture have caught up with us,” Rice said. “The chemicals are poisonous to bees. It’s critical that we rebuild our honeybee’s numbers and stop using the products that are destructive to them. It’s more important than ever, to keep our hives healthy and thriving.” Thanks to people such as Donnette Hansen, and Shelley Rice, Houston’s honeybees have a fighting chance.
get a mid-morning and midday snack to give your metabolism a boost. Nutrient dense snacks like raw veggies with hummus, low fat yogurt with nuts, popcorn, fruit and whole grain crackers with peanut butter keep your blood sugar levels stable, your energy level high and your brain sharp Ramp Up Your Exercise With High Intensity Interval Training (HIT): Ramping up your traditional aerobic exercise with interval training can make a huge impact on your metabolism and ultimately your weight loss efforts. Interval training includes alternating high intensity activities with lower intensity forms of exercise. Be sure you’re medically cleared to begin any exercise program, especially one that includes high intensity training. Please call us at 713-3603255 to book your free as-
Honey from P. 1B tical. I am amazed by them,” she said. “They travel up to a three-mile radius collecting pollen, then instinctively return to the hives. Each has a job and each does it very well.” When Hansen decided to try her hand at beekeeping, she consulted with local authority and Heights homeowner, Shelley Rice, for guidance. Rice keeps many hives, and consults throughout Houston. For this beekeeper, it is more than a job, hobby, or even a passion. It’s a “calling.” “Honey is a wonderful source of energy, and really great for elderly people and diabetics,” Rice said. “We often treat skin conditions and diabetic wounds with it, and I am working with a veterinarian who is using it for skin ailments in animals. Everyday I learn something new about the bee and the mystical applications of honey.” It should be noted that honey is an excellent substitute for sugar – a tablespoon

Heights a target for fitness clubs By Jonathan Garris jgarris@theleadernews.com If there’s one sector that has been steadily growing in The Leader area, it has certainly been the fitness industry. Over the past year or so, the area has seen steady expansion of offerings for fitness enthusiasts of all ages and needs. Last year saw the opening of Youfit Health Club at 5151 Antoine Dr. near Oak Forest, O Athletik at 767 North Shepherd Dr. in the Heights, the soon-to-be-opened Orange Theory Fitness at Sawyer Yards and more recently the grand opening of My House Fitness at its Heights location. The latter recently held a ribbon-cutting with the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce. These gyms join a long line of already established fitness centers like LA Fitness on North Shepherd and smaller
ones scattered throughout the area. In fact, about 15 different CrossFit affiliated gyms are in The Leader area currently, with nearly 10 in the Heights area alone. Nick Brunson, owner of Revoke Crossfit at 5915 North Main St., said the competition isn’t a bad thing as most people will gravitate towards the gyms that fit their needs, and in some cases their personalities, better. His gym has seen a wide group of participants with many in their late 20s and early 30s, but also several much older and the youngest being 19. “Some people try [CrossFit] and end up liking the regular gym better and vice versa,” Brunson said. “We find that a lot of people that struggle in other gyms find they really thrive in CrossFit as you get that community-oriented feel.” After two years of being
open in the community, does Brunson view all of these new facilities as competitors to the CrossFit model? It isn’t quite that simple, and in fact it could be a net positive in general. “I think what they have is a good idea but I don’t see people necessarily gravitating away from CrossFit toward that,” Brunson said. “I think with those larger facilities like O Athletik, even though they try to incorporate that community feel, it’s far more difficult as opposed to being dedicated solely to CrossFit or to that particular community feeling. They still have a good model, though.” Colin Clark at Iron Oak CrossFit at 2727 West 11th St., said that the benefits go deeper than simply adding new businesses into the area. “We’re excited about anyone promoting health and fitness,” Clark said. “Whether it’s an athletic club or CrossFit
memberships, these places all offer great ways to exercise and move on a daily basis.” Because each facility is as diverse as the diversifying Heights-area population, there is a high level of choice afforded to those looking for fitness. Brunson also theorizes that part of the reason the Heights area has been an attractive area for places like CrossFit gyms and other fitness centers has been the recent development. “When you look at places that are outside of the loop or out in Northeast or Southeast Houston, it’s not quite as dense as somewhere inside of the loop where people have gravitated to,” Brunson said. “I’ve lived here for about seven or eight years in the Heights and this has become such a densely populated area so it’s easy to have a bunch of these CrossFit gyms.”

Scarborough athletes prepare for senior year with summer work Rebecca K Roger For The Leader The following is part of an ongoing series profiling area high school juniors headed into their senior year. This week, we take a look at a few students at Scarborough High School. If there’s one thing that athletes at Scarborough High School have in common, it is the determination and desire to improve on their athletic and academic skills. Roxanne Potter, a track and cross-country runner at Scarborough, runs around two to three miles a day to stay in shape. “I run every chance I get” she said. “ I have summer school, and I work at Randalls four to five days a week, so
I make time to exercise by running to and from summer school”. Potter is in varsity track and cross country and runs the 3200 and 1600 races. She plans on getting a track scholarship for college, preferably to Oregon State. Jordan Thompson, a wide receiver in football and also the shooting guard in basketball, is also preparing for the next school year with lots of exercise. “Our football coach had us lifting weights, learning routes, and scrimmaging starting the second week of June,” Thompson said. “I also work out any free time I get, by going to the gym or the basketball court”. Thompson is an employee at Whataburger, and is also in
the Futures Program at Scarborough High School. The school is helping Thompson get a computer networking degree. He has been in the program for two of his three years at the school. Jordan plans on getting a basketball scholarship to HBU or Sam Houston, and also plans on pursuing something with computers, most likely systems networking administration. Thompson’s advice to incoming highschoolers is to always have a group of friends you can talk to. “I would not have been able to get through high school if it were not for my friends,” he said. Another top athlete at Scarborough is Adilee Perez, a senior who participates in
cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, and softball. “I love all sports,” she said. “It’s one of the main reasons why I want to go to college.” Perez said that before high school and before she fell in love with sports, she wasn’t planning on heading to college, but once she realized her potential and the possibility of scholarships, she knew that was what she wanted to do. Now, Perez is planning to get a scholarship as a volleyball player, and hopes to be an ultrasound technician. “Playing sports made me realize how proud I am of myself,” Perez said. Many people thought I was not going amount to anything, and I love to prove them wrong.”

Heat from P. 1B face area-to-body mass ratio than adults, which causes a greater heat gain on a hot day and a greater heat loss on a cold day; children produce more metabolic heat per mass unit than adults during physical activities that include walking or running; and sweating capacity is considerably lower in children than in adults, which reduces the ability of children to dissipate body heat by evaporation.” Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt wrote a blog in May with recommendations for the summer. First up – make sure your child is acclimated to the area’s temperature and humidity as children and athletes need time to adjust to playing and exercising in hot, humid weather. Then, make sure clothing is light-colored, lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate the evaporation of sweat. Sweatsaturated garments should be replaced by dry garments. In addition to staying in the shade, limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours and use sunscreen with at least a 15 SPF. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt says products with SPF 50 or more provide only a negligible increase in the protection from UV. Products with SPF 30 or higher are recommended for individuals performing outdoor work, sports, or recreational activities. Fluid intake is a must. Before and during any type of physical activity, children should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, such as cool water or non-carbonated, non-caffeinated sports drinks. Playground equipment can also be dangerous in the summer. In direct sunlight, equipment can heat up to temperatures in the triple digits. Severe burns can result from young children unknowingly exposing their skin to extremely hot playground equipment. Avoid going outdoors midday and frequenting playgrounds that are not shaded by trees or canopies. There’s been a lot in the news about children who have died from being left in a hot car. In a 2005 study published in Pediatrics, the authors found that vehicles heat up rapidly, with the majority of the temperature risk occurring within the first 15 to 30 minutes. On days when the ambient temperature was 72°F, they
showed that the internal vehicle temperature could reach 117 degrees within 60 minutes, with 80% of the temperature rise occurring in the first 30 minutes. To prevent a tragedy, parents and caregivers should never leave children alone in or around a vehicle. Always lock the car and ensure children do not have access to keys or remote entry devices, create visual reminders to look in the back seat before you leave, and plan to have daycare providers or other family members call home if the child hasn’t arrived on schedule or there’s been a change from the daily routine. Heat related symptoms to look for in kids include muscle cramps, usually occurring in the larger muscle groups, such as the hamstrings and buttocks. With dehydration and a change in the body’s salt content (i.e., sweating), the blood flow to the muscles may be impaired. If this happens, the child should stop exercising and start drinking fluids. Lying down and stretching the affected muscles will also help. Heat exhaustion usually occurs in children who participate in activities that lead to profuse sweat loss. In addition to moving a child into a shaded or air conditioned area, a caregiver should fan and rehydrate the child by placing ice bags around the neck, underarms and groin area, so the core body temperature will start to lower. However, if the child is unable to keep fluids down (due to nausea/vomiting) and appears dehydrated, he or she should be seen by a physician. In the case of heat stroke which has a mortality rate as high as 50 to 70 percent, the normal sweating response can become impaired. If a child is experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion plus abnormal behavior or responsiveness, seizures, and a core body temperatures greater than 104 degrees, call 911 after moving and cooling the child. Bystander CPR and the use of an AED (or automated external defibrillator) may be necessary if the child stops breathing and/or no longer has a pulse. While some of the above is very scary to contemplate, Dr. Leaming-Van Zandt says it’s important to remember that heat-induced illness and death are very preventable. So enjoy the summer, just do it wisely.

Holding down the fort with Pet Pals For The Leader Whether you’re headed away for a vacation or need to give your furry friend a trip to the veterinarian, Pet Pals of Houston has you and your pet covered. Karen Zorn, owner of the service, has been doing pet sitting for nearly ten years. She started back in 2007 originally and both her business and staff have steadily grown. Pet Pals now boasts about 10 sitters serving Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Heights, Timbergrove Manor and Lazybrook. More recently, the organization won third place in The Leader’s own Reader’s Choice Awards this
year. Zorn said she and other sitters come to the customer’s residence as opposed to boarding the animal, which is beneficial to everyone involved. “That’s a better situation as the pet is much more comfortable staying at home and the owner knows that their animal is safe,” Zorn said. Among the services offered include pet sitting, dog walking, overnight stays (where the sitter spends time in the evening with the animal and leaves at about 7 a.m. after a morning walk). “All the visits include having the sitter feed the animal and change the water,” Zorn said.
“The sitter also walks the dog or lets them out back and we also give the pets some TLC, of course.” Zorn said unlike some other services, all of her sitters are considered employees and have had background checks performed before they enter a client’s home. Keeping pets safe wasn’t the first career path for Zorn as she originally worked for a doctor in the Northwest Houston area before moving into property management. After reaching out to Morningside Nannies, Zorn said she got a job managing a large property that was home to a family that included an elderly woman and several
animals. “I found out I enjoyed taking care of the pets when they all traveled,” Zorn said. “So then folks in neighborhood found out that I took care of pets and started contacting me. The rest is history.” For more information, call 713-402-8335 or visit www. petpalsofhouston.com. This story is part of our Leader Expert series. Summer travel plans? Who’s caring for your pets? vacation type, this may be a great option. Other pets simply do not travel well; therefore, boarding may be the best choice.” Dear Tabby, We have several trips planned this summer and are unsure what to do with our pets while we’re away. What are our pets’ options, while we’re traveling? Traveling Men in Timbergrove
Dear Traveling Men, Many people associate the summer months with traveling and fun in the sun. While some people consider their pet a travel companion, other pets may be better left at home. How can you decide the best option for your pet? Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offered some insight. “Cats typically do not do well on vacation, but pet sitters are a great option for cats because it allows the cat to stay in its own environment. If a pet sitter is not an option, then a boarding facility with a separate cat area is a good idea,” she said. “Some pets may be more comfortable with their owners rather than a large population of pets, such as in a boarding facility. Some hotels and campsites allow pets, and depending on the
Boarding kennels—or facilities that house a large number of kennels for dogs and cats to stay in—should be considered a possibility when you decide your furryfriend cannot make the trip with you. Boarding kennels are comprised of various sized kennels. There are typically several kennels in a room, and some may have outdoor access. Some kennels are part of a veterinary hospital, while others are simple boarding facilities. Many kennels are built to reduce the noise and visibility of other pets. If you decide to board your pet, what should you look for in a boarding facility? “Recommendations from friends and family are important and may be a good starting point in looking for a boarding kennel,” she said. “In general, kennels should be clean and should require basic vaccines for their clients. Even if a pet is adequately vaccinated, the likelihood of spreading disease is higher when several pets are housed together. No vaccine is 100 percent effective.” In addition, it is important to tour the boarding kennel to ensure you feel safe keeping your pet there while you are out of town. Although there are some potential drawbacks to boarding facilities, they
make a great option when your pet cannot stay in your home or with a sitter. Be sure to choose a clean, safe, and comfortable boarding facility. Most importantly, remember to tour the facility before handing over your pet so that you can rest easy
and enjoy your vacation, without worrying about the health and happiness of your furry friends at home. Do you have a question for Tabby? If so, contact her at deartabbyquestions@gmail. com

We Can All Help Prevent Drug Resistant Germs
Emerging antibiotic resistant germs are a real concern to the human and animal healthcare communities. Yes, we will need better drugs in the future, but at the front line of this never-ending battle, we primarily need responsible people so germ mutations never start. The overuse of antibiotics is dictated by doctors but driven by everyday people. Doctors prescribe unnecessary amounts due to lifestyles that could be improved upon for the benefit of all.
Preventative Medicine helps to Prevent antibiotic overuse, this Prevents drug resistant germs.
Obviously, proper shelter, water, nutrition, hygiene, cleaning, and waste management are key to germ control. Fewer antibiotics are used if good practices are in place. As for Veterinary Preventative Medicine, we can prevent antibiotic overuse by promoting: 1. Proper Vaccine programs 2. Internal Parasite Control Programs - Heartworms/worms 3. External Parasite Control Programs - Fleas/Ticks & others 4. Dental Care Programs - Both professional and HomeCare These programs would significantly reduce respiratory, intestinal, skin, periodontal, and many other preventable infections veterinarians must treat everyday with antibiotics. If we are responsibly concerned about antibiotic resistance, then we will take proactive measures to best prevent parasites and disease in the first place.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of antibiotics overused.

peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Among the many procedures they perform are atherectomy to remove plaque from arteries, cardioversion to reset heart rhythms and atrial septal defect closure to close this congenital condition of a hole in the wall that separates the heart’s two upper chambers. “We use the latest results from clinical trials and other research to treat our patients, providing very personalized, high-quality care,” said Dr. Goswami, one of the Center’s affiliated physicians who specializes in cardiology, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.
