In partnership with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, the Timbergrove Sports Association (TSA) recently broke ground on a new sports field. Once completed, TSA softball league participants will be able to play at TSA facilities, rather than going to an off-site location. “Memorial Hermann Greater Heights is happy to support an organization that encourages kids to get active and learn important life skills like teamwork. We hope by instilling a love of sports in young kids, they will continue to maintain active, healthy lifestyles as adults, says Susan Jadlowski, Senior Vice President and CEO, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. This is the first year Memorial Hermann Greater Heights has partnered with TSA. “Timbergrove Sports Association is proud to partner with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights as we continue to deliver a safe, fun, and competitive environment for youth athletes. Through the generous support of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, TSA achieved our goal of building a fifth field to provide a home for our expanding softball program. This

TSA offers three different sports programs for hundreds of children ranging in age from 4 to 15 years old. TSA expects the field to be finished by the start of the fall 2017 sports season.

Owner anticipation for Aladdin GOOF location growing every day By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Unique cuisine is not difficult to find in a melting pot city such as Houston, but at times can be a pain to reach -- but not anymore. Coming in early 2018, local residents will no longer have to trek away from the neighborhood to find the hometown delicacy of Aladdin Mediterranean Grill courtesy of owner Ali Nahhas. Aladdin offers a variety of Mediterranean salads, spreads, vegetable dishes, sandwiches, shawerma, shish kabob and fresh baked pita bread, and Nahhas is chomping at the bit to bring the delectable Greek cuisine to the Garden Oaks and Oak Forest neighborhoods. “When I started my old business [in Meyerland], it was within a neighborhood, within a family-style community, and this to me is extremely exciting. It’s not about just being a part of the neighborhood, it’s about be-

Heights Swim and Social Club seeks a larger community connection Summer is a time parents simultaneously love and harbor some apprehension for — what to do to help children release that pent-up energy while not driving them crazy? Well now, a group of Heights neighbors are banding together in efforts to find that balance while streamlining a sense of community within the burgeoning Houston neighborhood. Earlier this summer, Heights resident Alex D’Ambrosio and other neighbors were searching far and wide for a way to get a pool in the neighborhood. While the immediate area consists of multiple city pools, D’Ambrosio said the hours and availability were limited, and the neighborhood lacked a community meeting spot, so they took it upon themselves to kick-start the Heights Swim and Social Club. “We’re at the point where we started a 501 c (7) club. We’re selling bonds that will cover the cost to purchase the land as well as constructing the facilities, he said. The idea behind Heights Swim and Social Club, he noted, is the concept of an old-style country club, where

ing the Mediterranean spot to go in the neighborhood, he said. “It’s also about me exploring this neighborhood and being that little spot within the community — to me, that’s amazing, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Slight variance, same great taste His Garden Oaks/Oak Forest location, he said would be 70 to 80 percent similar to Aladdin’s current home at the corner of Montrose and Westheimer Road, but will
feature more kabobs, more appetizers and a heavier focus on the salads in efforts to make create an array of family-friendly options. While he loves the Montrose area, Nahhas said expanding with a second location within a burgeoning neighborhood is the fulfillment of a dream. “I always wanted to have an Aladdin be part of a neighborhood. Montrose is a neighborhood, and we have a lot of people coming here after they visit museums, but it’s different when you’re actually a part of the neighborhood, Nahhas said. “You know everybody by name, and it’s like this relationship that you have. You tweak [the offerings] based on what’s popular in that neighborhood. He believes Leader residents, many of whom already make the drive out to Montrose, will quickly take to the See Aladdin P. 3B

Adolf Hoepfl hosting car care clinic July 12 For The Leader Most women would like to know more about how to properly care for their vehicle. Most parents would like their young adult drivers to be as informed as possible for car ownership. There is no better way to start than to attend our twohour class on car ownership, maintenance and vital information everyone “auto know about their vehicle. The class is at Adolf Hoepfl Garage on Wednesday, July 12, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. What are the five essential fluids to maintain in your vehicle besides oil? How
do you change a tire? What is the best way to properly plan and budget for your vehicle? How can you maximize your gas mileage? How does one know if it’s safe to keep driving when a dash board light comes on? What does one do if the car gets stuck in the sand at the beach? What do you do if the engine runs hot? Adolf Hoepfl wants to allay some of those concerns. That’s why they’re holding the Ron Adair Car Clinic, specifically for women and young adult drivers. Men and parents are welcome as well. They will show everyone
how to check all their car fluids—including radiator fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. They will educate about tire wear, tire pressure, even how to change a tire in a way that’s customized to your vehicle. They will discuss fuel additives, oil change intervals, lubricating fluids, all major vehicle systems and review the proper maintenance schedule for a particular vehicle. Also, they will give suggestions on what to do in various emergency situations or what to do for certain mechanical failures, and how to extend the
life of one’s most important investments. The car clinics are named after Ron Adair, a customer and dear friend who recently passed away. Ron had a mission of helping foster teenagers have reliable transportation. We have named our car clinic in his memory because of his passion for helping others learn about car maintenance and repairs. This class is $25 per person and includes lunch. Space is limited to 15 participants to ensure individual instruction. Call 713695-5071 to reserve a spot.
Kids Meals feed Houston’s hungry children By Jennifer Layer For The Leader Despite the visible thriving energy and growth going on in Houston, there are still pockets of the city where people do not have the means to feed themselves and their families. This becomes a serious issue for pre-school aged children. When children are in school they are able to take advantage of free breakfast and free lunch programs, but if they are too young for school they don’t have access to those services. This is where Kids’ Meals steps in. Kids’ Meals serves as the nation’s only meals on wheels program for preschool aged children. “Our services are meant for those living in poverty and food desert areas, meaning they don’t have the funds or even the transportation to be able to go to the grocery store to provide food for their children, said Beth Harp, Executive Director of Kids’ Meals. “For a third of the families we serve this will be their child’s only meal of the day. We want to make sure they can rely on us and that we will be coming Monday – Friday to bring their children food. Kids’ Meals currently delivers around 2,500 meals a day to hungry children. That num-
ber more than doubles during school holidays like spring break and winter break, to make sure that those students who would have been getting fed at school will be getting fed at home. “The typical meal consists of a ham and cheese sandwich or wrap, with 100% juice and a side of some sort of fruit, said Valerie Garate, Director of Communications and External Operations. “When we are little, our brains almost develop fully between the ages 3 -4 and if you do not have the proper nutrition, the quality of that development is greatly impacted. So we impact more than their meal for the day we impact the rest of their lives. With statistics showing that nearly 88,000 kids in Houston are living in impoverished homes, Kids’ Meals knows that the current 2,500 meals they serve a day is hardly scratching the surface of what is truly needed. “Our biggest goal is that by year 2020 we plan to be serving a million meals a year whereas now we serve about 670,000 meals a year, said Harp. Kids’ Meals cannot reach this goal on their own, however. “We could not do what we do without the help of our volunteers, said Garate. “Our volunteers are the ones who
prepare the meals for us every day and without that there wouldn’t even be any meals to deliver. To put this all in perspective for potential volunteers: Kids’ Meals started with one lady in the Independence Heights area that saw a need and started feeding people around the neighborhood. From there it just grew to serving kids in other areas to where they are today. This goes to show the efforts of just even one person can make a difference that changes the lives of children forever. “It’s just an incredible feeling to know that you’re making a difference and impacting the future of Houston, said Garate. “What really impacted me
was the first time I went on a delivery route and pulling up to these homes in this van and having all these kids running up to the van like it’s Christmas for this meal they are counting on, said Harp. “It was lifechanging. It’s not just a meal, it’s a daily touch point for each of these families. Our drivers learn to know each family and can provide them with other resources. A new program Kids’ Meals is starting is a Kitchen Ambassador. This person would help run the kitchen and help other volunteers through the process. Aside from kitchen help, Kids’ Meals has many other opportunities to get involved. Aladdin, from P. 1B fresh and fast cuisine which offers a plethora of options for all pallets. “It’s good and it’s healthy, yet you still have flavor, and we’re known for our portions. We have vegan and gluten free options, and if you’re a meat lover we have that. The bread is puffy, a little sweet, fresh and hot. he said. “We’re going to make sure there’s something that everybody likes, so there are going to be some add-ons. The complete package Amidst the anticipation, Nahhas is wracking his brain attempting to figure out every semantic, every logistic option and every contingency plan in hopes of bringing families the perfect neighborhood dining stop. “You want to make sure you get it absolutely right, and you’re worried about everything getting done correctly, but there’s an adrenaline rush with the whole package, he said. Through it all, however,
excitement overwhelms him as he attempts to work back to his business roots, and after hearing from developer Bryan Danna, he was sold on bringing Aladdin close to home. And judging from the number of readers who have long wished for Mediterranean food in the hood, the eatery will be a more than welcome addition. “It’s going back to where it all started, and I also think it’s gotten to where Aladdin should be placed as a neighborhood kind of restaurant, he said. “It’s the whole package of Aladdin needing a second location after a while, and being part of such a growing neighborhood — I think they’re a great fit for each other. As always, he added, no restaurant is complete without seamless patron service—which, for Nahhas, is the glue for any establishment. “No matter how good your food is or how low your prices are, if you don’t pair it

patient. Nahhas said he hopes Aladdin’s second location, to be part of Bryan Danna’s RE:VIVE Development at the southwest corner of 34th and Ella, will be open by either January or February of 2018 barring any major setbacks.

Creating memories, friends D’Ambrosio said he, and oddly enough many of his neighbors, had unforgettable experiences with this type of club as young kids, and found a common bond in attempting to create those same memories for the children in their neighborhood. “One of my best memories growing up was riding my bike to the club, staying there until it closed, he said. “Parents are looking for some place to take their kids on a hot summer day to hang out and have everybody enjoy it, or also someplace parents and adults can relax after work. “This has been the hobby we decided to pick up, because it’d be a great thing to have and for our kids to enjoy, Rigamonti added.
More than a project In attempting to create these memories, D’Ambrosio said the neighborhood collaboration has instantly made it feel more like home, and hopes Heights Swim and Social Club spurs a similar trend for the area’s children. Collaborating on the project, he said, has does wonders to help the two settle in, and hopes that connection will shine through even more to create a true community gathering spot. As Houston’s boundaries continue to shift, D’Ambrosio believes that connection plays a role in the Heights’ identity, in which he hopes the club can play its own small role. “Everybody’s moving into the Heights and trying to find a way and reason to stay there even as they grow their family, D’Ambrosio said. “They move there for the ability to be close to their neighbors, have the kind of small community feel near downtown. More often that’s a feeling you get in the suburbs, so we’re trying to build it in the Heights. Rigamonti echoed the sentiment. “It hasn’t been an area that people came to and moved away. There’s more people committed to staying there

“We are simply volunteers trying to make this club happen for our community, he said. “The community lacks a quality place to go take your kids to go swimming, and I think it’s something we have the wherewithal to go do — it just takes a couple of folks who are passionately committed to making it happen.

SPX students participate in Great Day Houston For The Leader Fifty students in St. Pius X High School’s summer communications courses got the chance to be part of a live studio audience for Great Day Houston on Tuesday morning. In addition to experiencing the behind-the-scenes working of Houston’s only live morning show and meeting professionals in the communications field, the students in St. Pius X’s communications class contributed to a greater cause – KHOU 11’s Turn the Page Literacy Initiative. The students compiled and donated over 250 children’s books to KHOU’s community
effort to help shed light on Houston’s childhood literacy crisis and encourage summer reading throughout the Houston area. Donations will benefit Houston-based non-profit “Books Between Kids, an organization that serves at-risk children by providing them with books to build their own home libraries. The 3-week communications course teaches SPX students to identify, analyze, develop and evaluate communication skills needed for success. It focuses on interpersonal and intrapersonal communications, small groups and public speaking skills.
