108.1 172.9 2014 2015 2016 2017* 2018* 2019* 2020* 2021* 2022* By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com When Joe Costello started managing Better Days Hemp CBD Shop at 2524 Yale St. four years ago, products containing CBD – which stands for cannabidiol – didn’t occupy much space in a shop that also sells cigars, glass art, pendants, hookahs and clothing. “Now CBD products take up one-third of the store,” Costello said. Costello said business is so good that Better Days is opening up two more stores -- one at Durham Street and I-10 and one in Webster. The number of CBD stores in the area has been growing, which coincides with a national trend. A recent Inc Magazine article titled, “The Next Gold Rush Is the $22 Billion CBD Business,” cited statistics from the Hemp Business Journal that said the market for CBD was about $190 million in 2017 and will boom to $646 million by 2022. The national Agriculture

Improvement Act of 2018, otherwise known as the 2018 Farm Bill, legalized the regulated production of hemp. And in June of this year, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law House Bill 1325, which will also allow farmers in Texas to grow hemp with regulations. The Texas law clarifies the legality of CBD products as long as they contain no more than 0.3 percent of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. A recent newsletter from Heights of Health owner Tracy Wakefield Southwick, a board certified holistic health practitioner, clarified that CBD is not marijuana. “In fact it is an extract made from the cousin hemp plant and is not psychoactive or addictive,” Wakefield said. “CBD can legally contain up to 0.3 percent of THC ... but the amount is so small that you would not feel any effect from it.” Hemp Industry Daily reports that since passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, more people

are replacing CBD products with their prescription and over-the-counter drugs, citing a 2019 Consumer Reports survey of more than 4,000 CBD users. About one-fourth of those surveyed used CBD to replace over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol as well as prescription drugs, including opioids, anti-anxiety medications and sleep aids. Those are the kind of people that Pricila Rodriguez is seeing at her newly opened Sacred Leaf Zero store located at 4721 N. Main St. Rodriguez used to manage a Katy Sacred Leaf Zero store before she opened the one on North Main. Sacred Leaf Zero is a Kansas-based company and Rodriguez said their products are derived from hemp farmed in Colorado. She said customers who either can’t or don’t want to use opioids are seeking products to alleviate inflammatory issues and anxiety. “They are looking for an alternative,” said Rodriguez said, who added that people

also shop for their pets. The tinctures, or oils, are the store’s best sellers, although they also sell capsules and other edibles. The products that Sacred Leaf sells have zero THC, hence their name. Rodriguez said products with and without THC are equally effective. Another newcomer to the business is Danny Cassidy, who opened CBD American Shaman of Houston Heights in April at 1241 W. 11th St. Like Sacred Leaf Zero, American Shaman is a franchise with its own brand of products. Cassidy said he learned about CBD when his father was having back pain. “We researched it,” Cassidy said. “He started getting the benefit.” Cassidy said he believes people need a small concentration of THC for medicinal benefit, although American Shaman sells products without it, too, due to the zero-tolerance policy of some employers. He said the business has done a lot of online advertising. “We’re getting repeat customers, too,” Cassidy said.

Mia and Joe Heil recently broke ground on construction for their preschool at 1901 W. 34th St. Oak Forest Academy is scheduled to open in January. The Heils purchased about an acre from Braun Enterprises to build the school. Both Oak Forest Academy and Braun’s development next door at 2001 W. 34th St. are on the land formerly owned by Aztec Rental. The school is a new venture for the Heils, who are former Oak Forest residents. Mia Heil said although she’s been interested in education her whole life, she originally earned a finance degree and worked in consulting and oil and gas. Six years ago, when she had her son, her desire to be involved in the education industry was reignited. She realized the tremendous impact of education and childcare on children and their parents, and she began to formulate plans for an early education center that would use creative and innovative methods to maximize the positive impact for students, parents, teachers and the local community. “I saw so many opportunities to improve upon the traditional approaches to early childhood education,” Heil said. She recruited a team of experts to help develop the concept, which is now Oak Forest Academy. Now a mother of three, Heil is ready to open Oak Forest Academy, which will serve infants through preschool-aged children. She said capacity for the school is 220 children, and there are full-week and partial-

A family-owned dining hot spot is looking for help locating a key piece of equipment that was stolen last week. Gatlin’s BBQ owner Greg Gatlin said the restaurant’s catering trailer was stolen off the company’s property near Tidwell Road and Bingle Road sometime between closing time Thursday night and opening Friday morning. A company Facebook post said the business also had a tailgate stolen and a window broken out at the restaurant located 3510 Ella Blvd. “It’s unfortunate that it happened, and that there’s been in the neighborhood lately with people being opportunists and taking advantage of folks,”

Gatlin said. “As a community, we just need to be vigilant about people that are coming around. If you see something that doesn’t look right, call the police. “I’d rather call the police and have it wind up being nothing, then not do anything and then somebody winds up getting their property vandalized or stolen.” The catering trailer is a popular draw for the restaurant, which uses it to cater weddings and other large-scale events that the brick-and-mortar restaurant can’t handle. Gatlin said the restaurant on wheels is equipped with a full kitchen and other tools to help Gatlin’s fulfill its service promise when cooking off-site. In the aftermath of the robbery, the restaurant is search-

ing for ways to continue delivering to customers. Whether that involves buying another trailer remains to be seen. Gatlin said security likely will strengthened at the property near Tidwell and Bingle. “We tried to secure it as much as we can. We put up new fencing with security code locks on it, parking boots and power locks on the trailer – everything we could do to theft-proof it,” Gatlin said. “But when somebody wants something, they’ll go to great lengths to get it.” The company is hoping a call for help will help bring its trailer back home. “We all look out for each other, and we’ve got to figure out how to get it stopped,” Gatlin said.

Clearing the air on pet flatulence Could be sign of something more Certain diseases, such as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and inflammatory bowel disease, can cause excessive gas in pets. Because the amount of gas that a dog or cat produces can be quite variable, consult your veterinarian if you notice an increase in the frequency or any signs that your pet may be bloated and uncomfortable. In addition to diseases, excessive gas can be caused by the food in your pet’s diet as well as your pet’s eating habits. Dr. Yuri Lawrence in the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences explained some common causes. “Swallowed air from eating or drinking water too fast often makes the largest contribution to gas in the gastrointestinal tract,” Lawrence said. “Diet also could play a role. Consuming soybeans, beans, peas and other legumes also can lead to excessive gas.”

Slowly Suffocating in Shepherd Park Plaza Dear Slowly Suffocating, What you’re experiencing is a natural part of pet ownership, unfortunately. The good news is that there is likely an easy explanation and a quick fix for your pup’s smelly situation. However, in some cases, stinky gas can be a sign of a bigger problem. Our friends at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine offer the following advice:

routine. Consider adding good bacteria If everything checks out at the vet, your next step might be to consider adding a probiotic to your pet’s food. Probiotics and digestive enzymes, found at your local pet supply store or veterinarian’s office, are also beneficial microscopic bacteria. These enzymes

Dear Tabby, Our dog gets really bad gas. Her gas is so bad at times, I swear it’s going to peel the wallpaper off our walls! What could be the cause and is there anything we can do to help?

In these cases, changing your pet’s diet could help. Lawrence said general ways to reduce gas include feeding a highly digestible diet, removing consumables that include legumes and lactose, and reducing swallowed air by feeding your pet small, frequent meals. However, be sure to consult your veterinarian before making any changes in your pet’s normal

Neighbors: Community members reach milestones By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com Sincerest congratulations to Gene and Dell Hightower, who celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on June 22. This amazing couple met in high school and have quite a special story. Neighbors in Shepherd Forest where the Hightower couple are treasured, longtime residents, shared that this amazing couple has blessed the community with their time and talents countless times throughout the years. Both airplane pilots with numerous interests, they have served in various capacities in the Shepherd Forest Civic Club, are active in the Shriners and have served that organization for many years, are active members of Garden Oaks Baptist Church, and are known throughout the community as a couple who is always “willing to help.” Mazel tov! Happy birthday to Nancy Boone of Oak Forest, who blew out her candles on June 25. Always armed with a smile and a saucy twinkle in her eye, she’s always ready to lend a hand to help others. Even though her own beautiful daughters Kelly and Shannon are grown, Nancy still finds time to go to camp and lead Girl Scout songs, introducing new Girl Scouts each year to the Princess Pat and Rose, among other beloved songs. Lyrics from Honor mirror Emerald Oaks Girl Scouts’ feelings about Nancy: “I’ve tucked away a song or two; When you’re feeling low,

there’s one for you; If you need a friend, then I will come; And there’s many more where I come from.” Wishing you many more happy birthdays and campfires. Happy day of birth! Garden Oaks neighbors as well as many others throughout the community send a warm and fuzzy birthday shout-out to Pat Walker. Pat celebrated her special day on June 29. You are loved! Inwood Forest welcomes new neighbors Edie and David Sharp! The Sharps moved to Houston from Pennsylvania last year and found their perfect home in Inwood Forest. Drawn by the trees, lush green spaces and walking paths of Inwood Forest, the Sharps are both artists and experienced gardeners. You could say that David is actually a farmer who has grown fields of flowers for cutting and arrangements as well as vegetables and herbs. The couple owned a health and organic foods store before it was the cool thing to do. Edie, an artist with paintings in private, academic and corporate collections, creates moving works with primarily watercolors and stained canvasses and also enjoys graphic design, illustration, papermaking and decorating, while David enjoys woodworking and making furniture. The couple is thrilled to be able to spend lots of time with daughter Steph, her husband John and grandsons Liam and Ethan, who make their home in the Heights. The Sharps recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on May 27 and

Edie said, “(On May 27, 1972) … we were kids, taking our first steps in an amazing adventure. We believed in peace, love and understanding and we still do. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would be celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary living in Texas and loving it.” Welcome home, Edie and David. Are you ready to rock? Registration is open for Girls Rock Camp Houston 2019 set for July 22-26 at MECA, which is located at 1900 Kane St. in Old Sixth Ward. Girls Rock Camp Houston is dedicated to empowering girls and women of all backgrounds and abilities through musical education and creative expression. For camper registration details, please visit the website at www.girlsrockhouston.org. Girls Rock Camp Houston is also calling for volunteers! Childcare experience is a plus and musical experience is not required. For more information, email volunteer@girlsrockhouston.org. Linda Younger, Oak Forest neighbor, mother, grandmother, vocalist and guitarist of Mydolls, the legendary Houston punk band, and also a longtime Girls Rock Camp Houston supporter and volunteer, shared, “We are getting ready for another year of camp and we couldn’t do it without the help of our community.” A few of your community neighbors helping bring a little music into the lives of Houston’s young, budding musicians are Younger, Bronwyn Lauder, Niki Williamson

Hall, Rachel Hansboro and Dianna Ray. Ray, our neighbor in Forest West and guitarist/bassist in the Mydolls band, said, “I wish there had been a Girls Rock Camp when I was a young girl. Their central mission is self-esteem, using music as the modality. It is such an important time to have a positive, creative, and collaborative experience in one’s life, especially for girls. As a young teen, I played air guitar to T-Rex in my bedroom, and my best friend and I talked about being in a band, but there weren’t many role models for us. There was Suzi Quatro, her sister Patti’s band Fanny, and The Runaways, and that was about it. I hope I will be going to see the bands our Girls Rock Camp attendees form for years to come!”

Oak Forest community shows support for paralyzed teen By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com The many friends of Connor Bazar turned out in force at a June 22 fundraiser to support the Waltrip High School student who was paralyzed in a gymnastics accident almost a year ago. “The auction was a wonderful success,” said his mother, Deanna Bazar. “Tons of people from Oak Forest Elementary and different organizations we have been a part of showed up and gave their support. Swim team, Boy Scouts, T-ball, soccer, Waltrip, Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan Middle School — and then friends, family and friends of friends. It was a totally amazing experience. The fun, love and support were almost overwhelming.” The “Team Connor” auction website total is at more than 70 percent of the goal on the way to $40,000. Joey Cox, of Top Knot Salon, said on his Facebook page that he was thrilled that the high bid for his services was $1,350. “We actually awarded two and were able to raise twice the money,” Cox said.

Submitted Photo Roughly $30,000 has been raised for paralyzed Waltrip High School student Connor Bazar.

“Along with the auction items and donations so far we have raised over $5,400 from our salon family and have more donations coming in. Thanks to all of you for contributing to a cause I really care about.” Co-organizer Sandra O’Guynn said donations are still coming in and they are hopeful to meet the goal or surpass it. “It is just crazy the cost of medical ser-

vices and equipment,” she said. “Worse, what insurance will not pay for.” O’Guynn thanked the following sponsors for their support - American Legion Post 560, Hartz Krispy Chicken, Spaghetti Western, DJ JJ Sounds and America’s Got Talent Contestant RL Bell. For those interested in making a donation, the auction site is still live at https:// www.32auctions.com/TeamConnorB.

CBD, from P. 1B story detailed how U.S. regulators are looking at ways CBD could be used legally in foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics. There is only one case so far in which the FDA has approved a drug containing CBD. GW Pharmaceutical’s drug Epidiolex, which contains a purified form, treats seizure disorders. Still, some anecdotal reports are encouraging. Heights resident Cheryl Hensley said she’s benefitted from several CBD products. “I had woken from a dead sleep to excruciating tooth pain,” Hensley said. “I put (a CBD gel pen) on my tooth and its root and also on my jaw bone. I went from 125 percent pain to 20 percent in 45 minutes. I have also used a pain patch for when my lower back froze up. It helped relax my muscles and alleviate the pain. I have also used a CBD salve. Most recently I tore my calf muscle and I used it to heal the muscle tear.” Jessi Heiner used CBD oil on her 16-year-old dachshund.

“He hurt his back a few months ago, and I wasn’t sure if he was going to recover,” Heiner said. “Rimadyl, Tramadol, and one other vet-prescribed narcotic pain medication simply weren’t working. He was in pain and cried every time we touched him. At the end of our rope after three days without sleep, we read that CBD oil had helped other dogs in similar situations, so we tried it. The first day we gave it to him was the first night we were able to rest in four days. Now we give him a few drops with each meal.” Southwick, the Heights of Health owner, gives several guidelines to follow for those wanting to try CBD products, including using organic-only products with clear and informative labeling as well as pure ingredients with third-party testing. “Look for an established, science-based as opposed to marketing-based company that has been around for a few years,” Southwick said.
