The Mediterranean diet is good in more ways than one Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com If you already are a fan of grape leaves and spinach and feta pie, then you probably don’t need the upsell, but just in case you haven’t eaten Mediterranean lately, it’s time to jump on the bandwagon. According to a 2015 study from the National Restaurant Association, the strongest growth in ethnic cuisines over the last 15 years has been among non-traditional cuisines. “While the ‘big three’ – Italian, Mexican and Chinese – have retained their popularity over time, some lesser known cuisines have gained significant ground with consumers over the past decade and a half, said Annika Stensson, director of research communications for the National Restaurant Association. “Mediterranean food is the big winner both when it comes to one-time trial and for eating frequently. And not only is the food delicious, but it’s good for you too. Brittany Link, a registered dietitian and certified wellness coach with Advice for Eating - Nutrition and Wellness Consulting, said that the Mediterranean diet emphasizes seafood as a protein source which is a great way to get a healthy dose of Omega 3 fatty acids. She notes that Omega 3’s are indicated in lowering both inflammation and overall cholesterol. “These high quality proteins and fats also help to keep you satiated, which will help with overall weight loss as well, said Link. The health benefits only continue. “Fresh fruits and vegetables are at the heart of the Mediterranean diet – not only are these a great source of antioxidants that help to fight disease and lower inflammation, they are also a great way to increase fiber intake which can help lower cholesterol and keep you feeling full longer – aiding in weight loss, said Link. “Because a fiber rich diet helps to slow the digestive processes, it also ensures that blood sugars stay more stable rather than dipping too low or spiking too high throughout the day. Link also notes that the use of olive oil is emphasized in the Mediterranean diet. She said that olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, specifically one called oleic acid which is known to be heart healthy. And that diets rich in monounsaturated fats have been found to help reduce total cholesterol by lowering LDL (the bad cholesterol), raising HDL (the good cholesterol) and lower-
By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com If you’re craving cuisine that is half a world away, Houston is the perfect place to live. Just about every type of food can be found down one road or another in this city, especially in the diverse streets of the Heights. But what makes food different, or surprisingly similar, culture to culture? As far as cooking technique go, there are minor differences. “Vary the ingredients and spices, you can pretty much cook anything, said Celeste Terrell, owner of Well Done Cooking Classes off Airline Drive. The use of certain spices tends to depend on the climate of the area. For example, Terrell said that the hotter the climate the more likely that culture uses spicier ingredients. This is to take advantage of the natural cooling system in the body. When you eat spicy food, you sweat more, which is cooling on a hot day. But some spices will be found to be used just about in every type of cuisine. “After salt and pepper, coriander and cumin are going to be found in more cuisines than not, Terrell said. Ingredients that some cultures gravitate toward more than others has a lot to do with climate and terrain. “[Americans] only consume about 2 percent of lamb, the rest of the world eats a lot, Terrell said. This is because our terrain allows us to raise more cattle, letting us go straight to the big guys for a food source.

ing triglycerides. Olive oil is also rich in polyphenols – antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body and fight free radical damage. “Overall the Mediterranean diets emphasizes eating fresh, whole foods – by increasing these you will naturally be reducing the amount of processed and sugary foods that tend to be staples in the standard American diet these days, concludes Link. Lucky for those of us on the Northside, Aladdin Mediterranean is soon to open at 34th and Ella in Revive’s Ella Oaks complex. Their closest location currently is in Montrose. Ali Nahhas, who started in the food business over 20 years ago, told The Leader he is really looking forward to being part of the Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Heights communities. And those communities are eagerly waiting for some heart healthy Mediterranean as soon as he opens his doors.
Contributed photo Hughies on 18th Street offers Pho and a wide selection of Vietnamese cuisine.
Americans take good food and try to make it better, and it’s been most successful with the cheeseburger. The other most popular food in America is the classic chocolate chip cookie. Mexico is known for their mole: ancient sauce made of chili peppers, spices, chocolate, and more, as well as their tamales, which are an ancient Mayan food traditionally of masa cooked in a leaf wrapping. Popular in Thailand is the the massaman curry, a Thai curry with Islamic roots. In Greece it’s the traditional gyro. In India dosa, a pancake filled with cheese or spicy vegetables is a common lunch or dinner choice. In France the escargot, in China the sweet and sour pork, and in Italy ragu alla bolohnese are all goto choices. In America there’s a little bit of everything and sometimes foreign cuisines mix it up with Americanized flavors. Terrell mentioned the Vietnamese phenomenon happening in Houston right now. Pho shops are popping up left and right and some are offering pho with a Cajun flavor: crawfish pho. Terrell also talked about changes made in cuisine when a culture migrated to America, such as the French cooking base of onion, carrots, and celery. When the French landed in Louisiana they found that carrots were difficult to harvest there, so they switched the carrots with bell peppers. Now, it’s more of a Cajun base. Luckily, Houston has a melting pot of cuisine that grant us the ability to have a wider palate. Yet, what are America’s tastiest offerings? According to CNN, America’s must haves are buttered popcorn, ketchup, and donuts. Saunter up to any barbecue pit to challenge that list.

Craft Chronicles: Beer rules, opined Landon Weiershausen Columnist
Beer rules were meant to be… It’s happened to all of us. We’ve been out sampling the tasty offerings of a local brewery and decided to head home. On our way out we think to ourselves, “I really liked that Pineapple Cream Ale they were serving, I’m going to get a couple to take home.” We happily ask the bartender for a 6 -pack or crowler and they have the unfortunate job of informing us that because they are a brewery and not a brewpub they are not allowed by the state to sell beer to-go.
What? That’s crazy! How can this be? Opinion alert: Texas beer laws are notoriously awful. Reason one: they are complex and at many times downright outdated. Many of the Texas beer laws are firmly based on laws that went into effect during prohibition. They are the reason that some beers have to be labeled as “ales” even though they are lagers and that we can’t seem to buy anything alcoholic before noon on Sundays. But back to the issue of not being able to get to-go beers. Reason two: there is an unnecessary distinction between two types of brewery licenses, a brewpub and the brewery. A “brewpub” (needing to be under a certain size limit) can sell their own beer to-go and sell other brewery’s beer with additional restrictions on how
La Vista 101 has opened its doors La Vista 101 by longtime restaurateur and owner Greg Gordon opened May 29 at 1805 W. 18th St. La Vista 101 is represented by J.D. Woodward as executive chef, Jeb Stuart as general manager and wine program director, Morgan Mansur as bar manager, and Phil Randolph as business manager. J. D. Woodward, a Houston native, learned cooking with his family first by his professional chef grandfather. His career into the “back of the house” began at Rainbow Lodge under Randy Rucker as an expediter, then he climbed his way to cook. From there he’s worked at Stella Sola, helped to open the acclaimed Underbelly, and most recently at Southern Goods. Woodward constructed a comfort menu for La Vista 101 of small plates, pizzas, and pastas with influences from all over the Mediterranean while incorporating his love for pickling and flavor infusions.
Applications of smoke, wood, and cure are implemented in the menu as well. For La Vista 101 Gordon tapped interior designer Carl Eaves of Eaves Construction and Design Services, who is known for his work at BRC, Liberty Kitchen, and Alice Blue. Eaves transformed the 3,000 square foot property into a cozy space by incorporating deep red, black and white elements throughout, adding shaped booths made of natural wood, and raising the roof. “What we’re most excited about at La Vista 101 is serving as a hub for the growing Lazybrook, Timbergrove community,” said Gordon, “We want everyone to view this place as—yes, a restaurant and bar, but also as a relaxing, fun haven from the outside world. Our dream is to see neighbors and friends come a few times a week with their families.” La Vista opens at 5 p.m. daily except Mondays.
much they can sell in total. A “brewery” has fewer size restrictions and can sell for onsite consumption but can sell nothing to-go and only their own products. Last, and probably most awful, in Texas there is a threetier system that is the law of the land. It means that there must be three separate entities in beer sales. These are the person who actually brews it, the person who distributes it and finally the person who sells it. When laws were changed in the past couple of years to allow breweries to license themselves as brewpubs and sell directly to the public, the distributors became upset that they lost a hold on the market. The powerful (i.e. wealthy) group of distributors in turn, spent a lot of money politically to get back that control.
Along with strict restrictions on brew production limit and brewery’s inability to sell their own product to-go, breweries that produce over 225,000 barrels annually have to pay a “dock tax” to the distributors for selling their own beer on site. It never even touches the distributor’s hands. But it’s not all bad news. CraftPAC was formed to help provide an opposition to the lobbying of the large distributors and the resulting debilitating laws. They are hoping that more awareness on the consumer’s part will allow them to control the flow of their products as they see fit. If you ever have questions about beer politics, stop by the brew shop (with beer in hand of course) and we can chat until the cows come home. Until next time. Farmboy out.

Spirited start for Fox & Seeker By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com A distiller steeped in tradition with a curiosity for new evolutions of the product has its sights on Houston’s First Ward for its home. Fox & Seeker is a distillery focused on quality for the consumer while seeking new boundaries. Andrew Thompson, a Heights resident, and Sean Anger began their journey by home brewing craft beer. But with a passion for the spirits and an open market for a Houston distillery, the two decided to focus their energy into establishing Fox & Seeker. In all there are five partners behind the business, with Thompson and Anger at the helm as managing partners. “We’re doing neutral spirits, so vodka, gin, [and] whiskey down the road. Clearly there’s a little bit of a lead time on whiskey, but the goal is to become Houston’s and Texas’s leading distillery,” Thompson said. The name of the company comes from their vision for the distillery and a little bit of family history. Foxes by nature are adventurous and outgoing. It also just so happens that Thompson is a direct descendant of Daniel Boone, who is also known to have worn a fox cap. “From a business standpoint we’re always going to be exploring new things and utilizing what nature gives us to make the best product for the consumer,” Anger said. The Seeker side is about never settling and always looking forward. They want to push beyond the norm and put something out there that no one has tried before. This element of the business also has a tie to Anger, whose great grandfather was an inventor. “I think that seeker element, for Sean and I, and those of us involved in this, that’s what really speaks to what we’re trying to do. We’re seeking new boundaries, trying to do some new things,” Thompson said. “Our spirits are initially going to be very traditional style spirits, then once we get estab-

lished we’re going to be looking to do some new takes on those traditional spirits…the seeker element to us speaks to our approach to life and how we want to approach the business.” Both Thompson and Anger have a technical background, which is helpful to them in this venture into the distilling world because there is a lot of carry over from something like process engineering to distilling. “If you look at the history of distilling you can go back thousands of years, it’s a very ancient process. You’re applying heat, separating out chemicals and purifying the chemicals. That process goes back to ancient Greece and ancient Middle East where they were really looking at ways, whether it be alchemy or through ancient medicinal techniques, to purify things,” Thompson said. The team has known each other for years, having spent a lot of time together running and competing in triathlons. They realized they had a lot of common interests and when the idea for the business began to form they recognized that their skills combined would benefit each other. “I went to school at Virginia Tech, which is a bourbon college. Everywhere you go there’s a bourbon influence in everything. So, I had an affinity for bourbon, Andrew had and affinity for whiskeys, but mostly gin at the time,” Anger said.
Fox & Seeker has been in the works for a few years and now Thompson and Anger are gearing up to sign a lease in First Ward, be ready to go by the end of this year, and begin production in January 2019. A major philosophy behind the company is transparency and authenticity in promotion of a close connection to the community. Thompson and Anger want to be able to share every step of the journey and to let the people of the community know how the process is going, while giving them a peak behind the scenes of what goes into a spirit that’s home-grown. The pair mentioned how easy it is to be duped by a bottle off the shelf, even when it’s a good product. There are companies that may buy a product from Ohio but rebottle it as if it was made in Texas. “It’s not that these products are bad in any way, it’s just we want to be an open book for anyone curious about the industry, the process, the product,” Anger said. “We ourselves want to be connected to the community, but we also want to connect them with where that product came from.” As much as they are able, the company wants to be able to connect the community to the farmers who grow the sugar, or the grain that goes into the product, or the glassmakers that create the bottles. In that they have a part in supplying something that people can sit around the table and enjoy. The initial products launch-

ing will be a London dry style of gin and a vodka. Quickly behind that Fox & Seeker will be putting out a seasonal gin. Juniper as the base ingredient of gin makes it easy to manipulate the flavor. They have plans for citrus is the summer, something with mint for the winter. Soon after production begins on gin and vodka, in the background they will begin production on whiskey, which will need time to age. With beer anyone can selfdistribute, but with spirits you can’t, not even one bottle. So, they will funnel through a distributor and you should see their bottles on the shelves early 2019. At their home base they will have tours and tastings available. With their distillers permit they are allowed a cocktail bar under a certain proof limit. Once the doors are open the community is welcome to come and check out everything Fox & Seeker has going on.

Art Valet: 4th Escapist Arrives from India Mitch Cohen Art Columnist
Soul Flower Music Fest 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday, June 16 Discovery Green 1500 McKinney St. Grab your tickets to the Soul Flower Music Fest and experience something new this summer! Soul Flower Music Fest is a one-day festival showcasing national and local artists. The line up is filled with R&B, Hip Hop, and Soul performers. The line up includes: Raheem DeVaughn, Tobe Nwigwe, M3CCA, Söleil Söleil, LaTasha Lee & The BlackTies, Phillip Wade, Tomar and the FCs, and more! Oasis art outing 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16 G Spot Gallery 310 East 9th St. Local artist, Laura Spector, has offered Houston Oasis and Galveston Bay Oasis a private tour of the latest Chadwick and Spector project. The project, “Museum Anatomy: The German Works” uses images of paintings stolen by the Nazis during WW2 as inspiration. Chadwick and Spector breathe new life into these paintings by retelling their stories onto humans that better represent what we see in our contemporary daily lives--both honoring the lost art while creating a sense of time travel bringing them into 2018.
In my February 10 column I introduced you to the nonprofit Art Launch, managed by artist John Ross Palmer and husband Ryan Lindsay. A fabulous photo of the three of the four Escapist Mentorship Program’s 2018 artists ran with my column. Today I get to introduce you to the fourth artist, Nabarupa Bhattacharjee, who recently joined the other “Escapists” from her home in India. A little refresher about the program first. Since 2014, the Escapist Artists each receive use of a personal state-of-theart studio and gallery space in the heart of the Historic Houston Heights known as the Chrysalis. The Escapist Mentorship Program has always been entirely free for the accepted Escapist Artists. Art Launch doesn’t just “teach” artists business skills in a bubble. The Escapist Artists are provided the authentic artist environment to host events and meet with art collectors through gallery welcome, art discussion, potential sale and follow-up. Art Launch also doesn’t just give education to the Escapist Artists. Real, significant dollars are put into their pockets through the sale of their artwork in the Chrysalis. Nabarupa Bhattacharjee goes by the name Lily.
Nabarupa ‘Lily’ Bhattacharjee self portrait
and this is my first visit to the United States. What kind of artist are you? I am a photographer. I went to Shari Academy Mumbai where I studied photography for a year before enrolling at University of the Arts London in Image Construction Photography. My photography practice generally covers human culture, history and tradition, photo-biographies and archives. I am here to do a photo-biography of Houston based artist John Ross Palmer through his renowned Escapist program, establishing his personality both as an artist and a human being through pictorial narration. The book is due on releasing on 21st of September 2018 by Artlaunch.
Lily, where are you from? I was born in Kolkata, and have lived in Mumbai and New Delhi and London. Currently, I live in Houston Heights at the residency of artist John Ross Palmer and his husband Ryan Lindsay (1218 Heights Blvd TX 77008).
Has being an Escapist changed your art? How? I am still on a voyage of self-discovery and Escapism is giving me a new perspective to look at life and its co-related disciplines. John Palmer and Ryan Lindsay continue to inspire me in every sphere of my life.
How long are you staying in Houston? Have you been to the US before? I am here for six months

a part of this program? I am inspired by humans, their relationships, and their growth. I have been following John Palmer’s career for some time now and I am fascinated by the complexities he upContributed photo holds which made me long photo art by Nabarupa Bhattacharjee to observe him through my lens and hence I applied to Cohen is an artist and founder his mentorship program from f a c e b o o k . c o m / A r t L a u n - of First Saturday Arts Market India. Living with and photo- chOrg and Lily www.insta- and the new Market at Sawyer graphing artist John Palmer gram.com/nabarupa.b/ Yards, find him at ArtValet.com. will give me a cross-cultural experience for my wisdom and artistic development. What would you recommend to visitors coming to Houston? *Side note: This question was originally about India but Lily misunderstood, I like her response about Houston though. She “gets” us! Houston is a beautiful city with parks, coffee places and restaurants of various cuisines. It is also home to the famous Rothko Chapel which I always longed to visit. The city has embraced new cultures yet keeping its own roots. I never feel like a visitor here. Houston has welcomed me as one of its own. Keep up to date with Lily and the other Escapists on their Facebook page: www.

Educators gather for school safety discussion For The Leader School’s out for summer, offering a prime opportunity for educators to collaborate on school safety in the wake of the recent Santa Fe tragedy. More than 200 educators and law enforcement officials from Harris and surrounding counties gathered for a daylong school safety session as the Center for Safe and Secure Schools hosted the Student Safety and Discipline Institute on June 6 at Harris County Department of Education, 6300 Irvington. Keynote and breakout sessions tackled topics such as active shooter training, suicide prevention, student mental health, drug prevention and violence, cybersecurity and social media monitoring and school safety. The free event featured Gaye Lang, who specializes in Restorative Practices as an adjunct professor for Texas Southern University; Sasha McLean, executive di-
rector of Archway Academy, a recovery school; and Eloise Sepeda, a Restorative Justice trainer. HCDE Superintendent James Colbert Jr. provided the welcome and applauded attendees for taking a community approach to solving school safety issues. “I appreciate your fearlessness and your ability to step forward rather than stepping back,” Colbert told the crowd. McLean, whose school resides in inner-city Houston, took action by sharing her basic active shooter presentation which included roleplay on swarming, a crowd approach to deterring an active shooter, with power in numbers. “Ninety-nine percent of the time, it’s one person acting alone,” said McLean. “If I have a weapon, the first thing you want to get your hand on is the shooter’s arms. The goal is to contain the firearm. “If you can’t run and have no other choice, I want you to
protect yourself. It’s important for you to visualize what that would be like.” Closing the presentation, a panel discussion provided opportunity for information sharing as Yates High School student Zachary Steward moderated a discussion between superintendents and school law enforcement leaders, including retired police chief Alan Bragg; LaTonya Goffney, Aldine ISD superintendent; H.D. Chambers, Alief ISD superintendent; Victor Mitchell, police chief at Spring ISD; Brian Allen, director of safety and security, Galena Park ISD; and Ecomet Burley, director of the Center for Safe and Secure Schools. “Harris County Department of Education’s Center for Safe and Secure Schools continues to evolve and seek innovative ways to support school districts’ efforts to maintain safe and secure learning environments,” said Ecomet Burley, director for the Center for Safe
Know the warning signs of suicide For The Leader The losses of legendary fashion icon, Kate Spade, and the world’s most famous foodie and travel companion, Anthony Bourdain, are fresh on the minds of so many people touched by their creativity and power. Many are wondering why a person in their station in life would end up in a space resulting in suicide. Their suicides occur at a time in our society that suicides rates have risen almost 30% since 1999. Women attempt suicide twice as often as men, the suicide rate is highest during middle age, twenty-eight middle aged women end their lives each day and unfortunately, there is still so much stigma around getting help. Allie Scott, LPC and Clinical Coordinator of Shield Bearer Counseling Centers states, “The issue is that we think it is our responsibility to handle it all on our own. We feel like
we are the only ones going through whatever it is. We sometimes think if we seek help from a professional that means we are imperfect and failing.” Ms. Scott also shared that relief begins as soon as you reach out for help. “Studies have confirmed what our clients tell us, that as soon as you call for help, you begin to feel better.” A call to Shield Bearer is free and it usually results in a plan specific for you which may include counseling services or other services. Scott goes on to say, “If you know someone you might think needs help, don’t wait to reach out. Simply ask them how they are doing and let them know that you want to be there for them if they need help.” Some Warning Signs to Watch For: Talking about wanting to die or ending one’s life Mood swings
Searching for a way to die Isolation, withdrawal and disconnection Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live Sleeping too little or too much Feeling trapped in unbearable pain Change in behavior, living more recklessly Feeling like they are a burden on others Increased use of alcohol or other drugs Increased anxiousness/agitation or rage If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 or the Harris Center 24-hour Hotline 713-970-7000. and Secure Schools. “We’re looking at a lot of different topics today like cybersecurity, restorative discipline practices and how to recognize students who are troubled in order to proactively get out in front of these problems.” Currently the Center for Safe and Secure Schools focuses on four areas of services: school culture and climate, emergency management planning, safe school plans and facility audits, and member benefits. The center’s newest service area called Restorative Discipline Practices provides alternative discipline methods versus the traditional, exclusionary or punitive systems. Restorative practices work to promote positive school climates. Neighbors: PeaPepper painting party held at the Rotenberry’s By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com
It was so good to see Mary Lamb this week! She’s our amazing neighbor - a hidden treasure - in Shepherd Forest. Mary produces the Shepherd Forest Newsletter (with a little help from her friends) and does an amazing job of it. One evening recently, an excited group of women gathered at the Rotenberry swankienda in Oak Forest at sunset. It was hot. There were flies. But I digress! The sangria was flowing, beautiful serving dishes and summer salads added splashes of color, and Kenny Chesney sang in the background as smiling and beautiful women visited and laughed. Old friends caught up and new friendships were sparked. Everyone quieted down and there was a hush as Holly Rotenberry Hubbard brought out the wood planks and paintbrushes and everyone got down to business creating a personalized rustic board with a special message - it was a PeaPepper painting party! Everyone secretly wondered if it was possible they could actually create something they would want to hang in their homes (let’s be honest — how many of us have Painting With a Twist paintings stuck in a closet somewhere we will never hang in our homes?), and yet Hubbard expertly guided each person through levels of decisions for their piece of art and the results were a resounding success - not only did the guests want to hang the signs they’ve made in their homes, but they are ready to make another! Hostesses for the evening were Jan Rotenberry, Haley Rotenberry and Glenda Ogden. Neighbors from all over Leader Country were in attendance — Ariel Briceno, Jenny Hannon, Becca Lim, Cristy Thornton, Emily Silva, Lisa Penafiel, Vikki Vines, Alex Ogden, Kay Gilbreath, Kristi Ritch, Patty Whiting, Julie Godfrey, Kahla Hodges and Lisa Talbot — all created something beautiful for their homes and went home with a smile. Last week I mentioned our neighbor Ashli Garcia’s efforts to get involved and generate support for Lulu M. Stevens Elementary School’s students, teachers and staff and shared the Facebook page created for people to connect who are interested in joining Garcia. Since that time, the name of the Facebook page has changed to “Stevens Elementary Community Outreach Committee” and a great amount of interest has been generated. The first meeting of the Stevens Elementary Community Outreach Committee is to-
night as The Leader goes to press and below is a list of people expected to be in attendance: Principal Barrientez, Tim Weltin, Parent Engagement Representative for Frank Black Middle School — Weltin was part of the grassroots community outreach and hard-fought momentum bringing new life and tangible academic improvement which FBMS experienced several years ago and his firsthand experience can help guide today’s community enthusiasm about Stevens into tangible progress for everyone. Also attending will be a Durham Elementary PTA representative. The group hopes to shine the light on the positive at Stevens including faculty and staff, and boost morale overall as they work towards creating a positive and empowering environment for students with the help of the community. Highlighting the positives at the school and continuing to build on top of those successes while igniting efforts in the community is Garcia’s goal for the next year. She will be posting the notes from tonight’s meeting on the Facebook page along with the first opportunity for volunteer sign up. If anyone has questions, contact Garcia at ashligarcia823@ gmail.com. Stay tuned! For neighbors who own property in the White Oak Bayou and Little White Oak Bayou watersheds, this is a meeting you should strongly consider attending! The Harris County Flood Control District is hosting a community engagement meeting on Tuesday, June 12, at 6 p.m. at the White Oak Conference Center, 7603 Antoine Dr., to discuss the 2018 bond program for residents who reside near the White Oak Bayou and Little White Oak Bayou watersheds. This is the only meeting currently scheduled for the Leader Community’s watersheds. For more information, review the bond proposals at https://www.hcfcd.org/bond-program/potential-project-types/. Bring your questions and ideas to this meeting regarding the 2018 Harris County Flood Control District Bond Program. To prepare an effective flood damage reduction program for our region, Harris County needs your input. A new tool to share! It’s Hurricane season, neighbors. Be prepared and be alert to news and weather reports. This brand new interactive website and map called the Harris County Flood Warning System is something you should check out! Play with this website, familiarize yourself, see what it can do, and learn how to utilize this tool for checking bayou levels and for help with navigating the city during heavy rain and flood conditions. www.harriscountyfws.org.
