Are you curious about Curling? It’s a lot harder than it looks

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Like thousands of others, Oak Forest’s Iain Kinloch and his daughter Ainsley watched the curling competition at the Winter Olympics. But unlike most viewers, after the Olympics were over, the father and daughter decided to try it out for themselves. Fourteen year old Ainsley who will be a freshman at Lutheran High North said that she and a friend were talking about curling during a school basketball game and as a lark found the Curling Club of Houston online. They signed up for the two hour Learn-to-Curl class, and then Ainsley brought her dad back for another class. Then she and her dad signed up for an eight week league which they finished up this spring. Iain said that while the Learn-to-Curl class entailed a few attempts to curl the stone on the ice and education about the curling signals, the league offered the chance to play a real game. And it was a sport he could
enjoy with his daughter. The Curling Club’s activities take place in a facility right behind Sharpstown Mall, about a 20 minute drive from Oak Forest, that is also used for hockey games and figure skating. For those who didn’t watch it on the Olympics, the How Stuff Works web site shares the basics of curling. It’s a team sport with four members on each side. The object of the game is to get your team’s stones closer to the target — which is a 1-foot diameter circle called the tee or button — than your opponent’s stones. The button is located in the center of a 12-foot bull’s-eye called the house. Each curler on both teams gets to shoot two stones for a total of 16 stones per end. An end is like an inning in baseball. At the completion of each end, points are tallied. You get one point for each of your team’s stones that is closer to the button than your opponent’s. There are 10 ends in each game of curling, and the team with the most total points wins. As Iain learned, “it’s a lot

St. Joseph encourages heart health basics at luncheon For The Leader Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women, regardless of race or ethnicity. It kills one of every four women in the U.S. and results in three times more deaths than cancer. While attendees of the 5th Annual Women’s Heart Health Luncheon hosted May 11 at St. Joseph Medical Center were informed of the hard facts about heart disease, they also learned it can be prevented or controlled. The annual luncheon was presented by Women of Wellness, a St. Joseph health and social program to empower women as healthcare consumers by providing educational information and social events that celebrate women’s roles in their own wellness. Jaime Benrey, M.D., a cardiologist on the medical staff of St. Joseph, presented heart health information to the audience and described the human heart as the most dependable pump in the world. “The average heart beats 70 times per minute and that’s about 100,000 times a day,” said Dr. Benrey. “It is an incredible hard-working muscle, so let’s protect it. All of the risk factors for heart disease can be prevented, except for genetic factors.” Dr. Benrey said that hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the most common symptom for heart disease and urged women to check their blood pressure often because their arteries are smaller than men’s and can clog faster. High blood pressure risk factors include obesity, drinking too much alcohol, smoking, and family history. Beta-blockers are a common treatment for hypertension, said Dr. Benrey. He advised women in particular to recognize the signs of a heart attack, which are different than the symptoms experienced by men, and may include any or all of the following: • Chest pain or discomfort • Upper back or neck pain • Indigestion

When the tube is in
place, the doctor inflates the balloon to widen the artery and restore blood flow.” The best thing to do is have a heart-to-heart with your doctor, said Dr. Benrey. “Discuss your risk of heart disease, have a list of questions to ask before your visit, and tell your doctor about your lifestyle so you can understand your risks and what you can do about them,” he said. “Once a woman is older than 45, her risk of heart attack is equal to that of a man. So learn what you can do to lessen your risk today.” Hands-Only CPR Center for Learning Nurse Educator Maria “Tet” Ontoy provided a

She reviewed the steps to take if someone is having a heart attack. “Hands-Only CPR has just two easy steps, performed in this order,” said Ontoy. “First, if you see an adult or teen suddenly collapse, determine if he or she is unconscious by shaking the shoulders and asking if the person is okay. If there is no response, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then, begin CPR by pushing hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest to the beat of a song that has 100 to 120 beats per minute. New restaurant Millie’s coming to Oak Forest By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Two locals dedicated to serving the community have come together for a new restaurant concept to take the home of the closed Oak Forest Chill. The journey began when Chris Jones, owner of the local business Deuce Electrical, acquired the lease to the 3542 Oak Forest Dr. location. “I used to come [to The Chill] quite a bit. I was here when it first opened and knew the owner pretty well,” Jones said. Jones approached the owner and now has a fifteenyear lease on the space. At first Jones grabbed the property off the market because he knew the value of the area, but he didn’t have a direct plan of what he wanted to do with it. However, he had a lot of friends in the restaurant business. One of them being Ken Bridge who has brought the community Pink’s Pizza, Shepherd Park Draught House, Ritual, Lola’s, and Republic Diner. Jones and Bridge are now partners in this new venture. The pair met while Jones was doing electrical work in one of Bridge’s restaurants. “We knew each other for years and have always wanted to get into business together. We had hobbies in common,” Bridge said, and Jones added that those hobbies were, “Good beer and good food.” “My grandmother owned a bar called Millie’s in Spring Branch, and her name was Millie—When I first got this place I knew I wanted to call it that,” Jones said, mentioning that there’s not any other connection with the bar and new
restaurant, only he likes the idea of using his grandmother’s name. When Jones first met with Bridge about the potential concept, without Jones declaring a name, Bridge said, “You know what we ought to call this place? What’s your mom’s bar called?” They both loved the name “Millie’s” for a restaurant because of the comfortability it conveys. The neighborhood should expect a whole new look at the corner of Judiway and Oak Forest. Of course, painting will give the outside a face lift, but the two partners are also preparing for additions to the inside and outside. A patio will extend into the front—next to the covered area by the front door. They haven’t yet decided if the patio will have permanent covering as well, or have tables set up with umbrellas. The two garage doors will stay, but will be fixed in place, unable to open. So, they are keeping the look, but not usability of it. In the back they’re adding on more space in the interior. It’ll be set up almost like a sunroom with glass closing in the area. In another corner of the back will be a small stage for live music the restaurant goers can enjoy. The inside will be reimagined as a casual restaurant with all the amenities. The bar that now curves widely around a corner will be removed, and a kitchen will have to be built. As Jones put it with a laugh, “No, there’s no kitchen.” “When we talk about [the design] we want it to be a nice, approachable place. Everyone will feel welcome, whether you have on a shirt

and jeans or you’re coming from work downtown.” Bridge said, “We’re more restaurant than bar; more than a bar with food.” What’s important about this project to both Jones and Bridge is that because this is where they live, they want to focus on making the locals happy, even if that means changing the time frame they’re open (which hasn’t been established yet.) “I want to be involved in the community,” Jones said, “It’s not about numbers to us.” Jones revealed that one of the way he thought would be a fun way to be involved was to have hayrides in December, with the pick-up base at Millie’s. While Bridge is well familiar with the restaurant world, Jones plans on learning the ins
and outs of the restaurant biz by being involved with the day to day operations as well. Although Jones acquired the lease almost a year ago and has been waiting months for the city to approve permeants, the remodel of the Oak Forest Chill into Millie’s should begin shortly, with a completion date in the area of four to five months from the beginning of the project. The menu for Millie’s is not nailed down, so the duo wasn’t able to divulge much other than that it will be American food, with hopefully some Gulf offerings. Peter Clifton will oversee what goes behind the bar, having worked with Bridge at Ritual as well. The plan for now is to be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

By Christopher Sanchez Every year we celebrate Father’s Day and with this day comes a barrage of commercials on what appreciation looks like from a material perspective. It got me thinking on what Father’s Day really means to me. It hit home when thinking about this question since my father started and currently runs this business today. One of the first words that stood out to me was Strength. For more than 25 years my father has given his heart and soul to this company and it shows in every fiber of this company. I can remember days when he would get home at 9:30 p.m. and be up the next day at 5 a.m. hitting the neighborhoods door-to-door for new customers. It was a grind that continues to show in Tru-Lite’s DNA. Whether going the extra mile to ensure a customer’s job is done right, or seeing an extra step that someone won’t tell us to do – seeing that need and doing it anyways. Things like this come straight from Dad’s DNA. The next word that came to my head was Passion. My dad’s passion for getting a job done right and satisfying the customer is the framework for what we do. I can remember my dad taking over jobs and telling me, “Son, I could leave that glass semi-clean or I can go the extra mile and be passionate about what I do and just clean the whole thing.” It stood out to me because even after three hours on a job he took that time to put his mark on the job. It’s something in sales that we strive for every day at Tru-Lite. We take the customers’ needs and put them above ours to en-

Keep doing the compressions until the person is either conscious, or medical help arrives,” advised Ontoy. But I never understood what it meant until I met my wife and got married and then she blessed me with a beautiful daughter of my own who loves me unconditionally every day. It was a full circle moment to what a father’s journey truly is about. One thing Dad has always done is love. From truly loving what he does to putting that love to work in his everyday jobs it reflects in every fiber of our employees and this company’s DNA. We may not always have the best days and we may not always be perfect but at Tru-Lite Gas Products we can promise you that everything that we do is backed by the DNA of a father who has given 150 percent to making sure you, the customers, are happy and complete. So whether it’s grilling with Dad in the back yard, or taking in an Astros game, enjoy the day with Dad and remember to hug your dad and let him know just how much he means to you. Second Servings fights hunger in Houston do an amazing job locating these resources, evaluating the needs in the Houston community and re-allocating these valuable resources.” Unlike a food bank, Second Servings doesn’t store the food – making pick-ups and drop-offs on the same day in refrigerated vehicles, ensuring the food stays fresh and safe. Donated food helps nourish a wide range of individuals, including abused women and children, at-risk youth, veter-
By Landan Kuhlman landan@theleadernews.com Food waste is growing issue, and many in Houston could benefit from un-served food that eventually ends up in a landfill. And though the only food recovery service of its kind in the city has already reached a village, they’re pressing on in their quest. Established in 2014, Second Servings of Houston has now rescued more than 1 million pounds of surplus food that would have gone to the waste, but is now feeding people. Drivers pick up un-served and unsold food from distributors, retailers, hotels, universities, sports venues, and other regulated food businesses and deliver it to charities – including Kids Meals and Texas House in the Garden Oaks area – within the same day. Donors partner with Second Servings to schedule surplus food rescues on a regular or occasional basis.? “After a year [of doing solo food recovery], I realized there was so much food going to waste – and realized that food recovery was going on all over the country, we just didn’t have anything like that in Houston at the time,” founder Barbara Bronstein said of her initial dive into the effort. USDA estimates say one in six individuals in the U.S. faces food insecurity, or inadequate access to nutritional food. Houston’s situation is worse, with one in five Houstonians facing food insecurity according to Bronstein. To combat these issues, Second Servings delivers food to 47 approved charity meal sites, and remains Houston’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. Initially, Bronstein turned to the Houston Food Bank, but was later re-directed to Impact Houston, which serves 700 meals a week to needy individuals and families. Following an 18-month pilot program called “Banquet Bounty for the Hungry” that served as the precursor to Second Servings, her vision was born.
Zion Lutheran Church had a little bit extra added to their Sunday, May 20, service – an event more than 100 years in the making. The Woodland Heights church at the corner of Beauchamp and Pecore streets held a dedication ceremony to unveil a Texas Historical Commission marker celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the congregation. Church members Ray Dietrich and Clyde Muske performed ample research and documentation for the marker application process which spanned four years. They outlined church history during a dedication ceremony which included proclamations and presentations from national, state and local leaders. “Doing the research for Zion’s Historical Marker gave me a lesson in faith,” Muske said in a statement added to the Pentecost Sunday church bulletin. “Faith laid the groundwork that Zion continued to follow during its first century. I pray that this same faith will continue to lead Zion in its second century.” Houston City Councilperson Karla Cisneros brought a proclamation from Mayor Sylvester Turner’s office naming May 20 “Zion Lutheran Church Day.”
Second Servings only accepts food from regulated food businesses that have agreed to follow strict guidelines, while recipient agencies have met food handling and storage requirements and are subject to a periodic inspection by the City Health Department. Any interested donors in Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, or the Heights can reach Bronstein and set up a meet through the company’s website at secondservingshouston.org.

Saving grace According to the USDA, wasted food could potentially feed up to 25 million Americans. In three years since inception, Second Servings’ donated food has been distributed weekly to a network of carefully vetted charity meal sites – such as Kids Meals and Texas House – that serve more than 12,500 needy individuals per week. “We like to get to know our charities and bring them what they really want and have a need for, as much as we can accommodate them,” Bronstein said. “We’re mainly interested in providing fresh produce and prepared food for them.” In the case of Texas House – an organization that provides a one-year alcohol and drug rehab program for men in need who want to overcome their addictions and become productive citizens in the community and is one of Second Servings’ newest partners – the partnership could have come at a more opportune time. ans, disabled homeless seniors, developmentally challenged adults and more. And while the most in-need charity sites remain on the northeast side of town, Bronstein said donations from any interested party can help the cause. “We’d love to pick up more donors [in the Heights and Garden Oaks/Oak Forest] area so we can be more efficient in our distribution,” she said. “…We like to fill stomachs, not landfills.”
“It’s so important to be able to recognize our history,” Cisneros said. “In the midst of so much change, it is important to take time to look at our past and celebrate who we are.” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee presented a flag to the church which had flown over the US Capitol. Her next stop was to be a vigil for the victims in Santa Fe. “That is why this historical marker is so important, to tell the story of this great community,” she said. “To be a part of the American story: We never give up, we never give in.” Perseverance was indeed the theme of Zion’s early history as a missionary church in what was then the piney woods frontier of Houston’s northern “suburbs” in 1914. Rev. Hans F. Ander was sent to Houston to establish the city’s third Lutheran congregation at that time, known until the 1980s as Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. The names of the original 16 charter signatories were read aloud at the dedication. By the 1950s, the church had 1,600 members and would go on to help establish a number of churches in this area. Pastor Tracy Brashears Schultz led the procession outside to officially unveil the marker as Zion Lutheran Church took its place in the tapestry of Houston’s deep history of faith.
dent Ron O’Neill said Texas House found Second Servings right as their main food supplier became unable to meet the needs for feeding residents in the program. “We are grateful and are looking forward to working with Second Servings, very excited about this new partnership. The resources they have will greatly benefit our clients – it’s a fit between what they offer and what we can definitely use! Box lunches, snacks, juice, meals, produce— all can be utilized by our client base,” he said. “Barbara and her team

Neighbors: ‘Get Stevens Going’ group now forming By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com
Curious about Lulu M. Stevens Elementary? Neighbor Ashli Garcia has created a group on Facebook for those who are “Hoping to create the voice that Stevens Elementary needs to progress, not only for the good of the neighborhood but for the good of our children,” called Get Stevens Going. Join the group! Get involved and make a difference for our community. You’ll be so glad you did. Nothing is more rewarding than volunteering in our community’s schools. Just ask neighbors Susan Kostelecky (Garden Oaks), Dennis Woodward (Shepherd Park Plaza) and a good number of others, who have spent a great deal of time volunteering at Stevens in Oak Forest. Reach out to the schools your home is zoned to and discover a new joy in volunteering. Neighbors have been enjoying the offering of local businesses and wanted to share with our readers. Brenda Spurlin reports she and her partner, Rick Rice, visited Plonk on W. 43rd, where they were offered a free pizza if they provided a review of a new offering. Spurlin shared, “Even better than the fabulous pizza were the brussel sprouts! Rick had a Japanese rice beer which he really liked and I had a wonderful cabernet from Argentina. It was a great gesture to offer free pizzas for review. The pizza was a meaty combination of smooth, crispy, and salty perfection. We really enjoyed our evening. We know the owner has repeatedly reached out to the neighborhood in order to share and improve his business. He is a great guy, and we wish him well!” Melissa Tello shared her family’s fun day on Memorial Day: Melissa and her husband Juan have four children Alexis, Juan Jr., Alejandro and Valentina. “We had a great day even with the heat. It started with a walk to Candlelight Park with our two dogs, Floyd and Manny, and then to
the Starbucks on W. 43rd St. for coffee and breakfast. Starbucks on 43rd is like a family; they get to know your name, your family and what you like! We then took a 45 minute yoga class at the brand new studio BEYOGA on 18th and Shepherd which was fun, challenging and invigorating, followed by pool time at home with friend Korti Koc and neighbor Levi, which included lunch, reading and relaxing outside. For dinner we ordered food to go from Plonk (so yummy) and had a glass of wine at the bar while we waited for the food so we could be home to cheer on the Rockets! That was our day. We support local!” Tello owns the new non-heated yoga studio BEYOGA and shared they offer classes of all levels to suit all ages and abilities, beginner to advanced. Saying goodbye -The family of Cecil and Delores Lawrence, original residents of Oak Forest and neighbors here for 68 years, experienced a little of that Oak Forest neighborly love that makes our community so unique and so very special. Granddaughter Kelly Hansen reached out for help with this appeal, “We recently sold my grandparents’ home of 68 years here in Oak Forest, and it will probably be demolished later this month. There is a piece of cement slab on the back porch that we would like to keep that has my cousins’ names, handprints and date on it. It’s roughly 11” x 14”. Does anyone have the proper tools to do this?” Neighbor Gretchen Wolf responded immediately and showed up at the home on Latexo with her friend and Houston Fire Department co-worker Tiger, husband of Theresa Baranowski, and together they had the piece up within an hour. Even better, Gretchen also rehomed two of Hansen’s grandparents’ original screen doors. Hansen said, “Our family has remained in the Oak Forest area and this community will always be such a special part of our lives. As we said
our final goodbyes to 1715 Latexo, it was our fellow neighbors who helped us salvage a final piece of family history - a portion of concrete slab with great meaning. Wanting absolutely nothing in return, they came because they cared, and we could not be more grateful for their simple act of kindness.” Hansen also wanted to thank her Nanny’s long time next door neighbor Judith Fernandes who also assisted with the recovery project. The family also reached out for someone to salvage the beautiful oak hardwoods in the home and Craig Garrett, owner of Klassic Hardwoods of Texas and a native Houstonian, salvaged the flooring. Many items in the home were salvaged and will be repurposed or used in other homes. After speaking with Hansen (whom I’d never met before, but in talking discovered we have old and dear mutual friends in the community – once again, that 6 degrees of separation in our “small town”!), I was moved by her grandparents’ story and the family’s deep roots in our Leader community because it is so similar to my own and many others’ family stories. Most of the original Oak Forest, Heights, Timbergrove, Lazybrook, Shady Acres and other Leader community families, experiencing the turnover of neighborhoods and new construction projects going up alongside neighboring 50 to 100+ year old homes, aren’t begrudging the changes in the area and building boom so much as they, first – have been saying a long and heart wrenching goodbye to a dear generation and way of life, and second – hope to keep that small town feeling and deep connection between neighbors growing always.

The plan for now is to be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

said. “I was having to get into positions that I wasn’t used to.” Ainsley agreed that the sport was more challenging than she’d thought it would be too with the effort of the sweeping and how much effort goes into aiming the stone. “When you are throwing it,

We take the customers’ needs and put them above ours to en-
Heart from P. 1B inches deep making sure to let the chest rise completely between compressions.” Ontoy said most people know the song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees and pushing up and down, with stiff arms, on the chest to the beat of the song is the best way to conduct CPR. “You are basically beating the person’s heart for them, allowing blood to flow throughout the body to reach the crucial organs like the brain.
