Protect yourself from head to toe Houston Methodist Hospital For The Leader Dealing with orthopedic and sports injuries often comes with the territory for football players, marathon runners, gymnasts and other competitive athletes. But you don’t have to be on the field or court to end up with a painful or chronic injury. Everyday types of injuries — from carrying groceries or unloading the dishwasher — happen all the time and can also lead to long-term problems if not treated properly. Back problems, joint disorders and osteoarthritis are among the top reasons for seeing a doctor. “Musculoskeletal issues result in millions of orthopedic visits every year,” said Dr. William Bryan, orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee and hip surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital. Know your limits Bryan says it’s important to listen to your body when it’s telling you to slow down. “Sometimes we try to push through the pain, but you can end up doing more damage if you’re not careful. When you have joint and muscle pain, you can’t always walk off the pain or solve it by taking anti-inflammatory medicines,” he noted. “With age, our ability to heal is not as fast as it used to be and we don’t have as much elasticity in those tendons — like a rubber band that loses its elasticity over time. The best thing you can do is modify your activities or try a new activity that puts less stress on your body, such as biking or swimming,” Bryan added.
Keep moving Additional tips to help you keep moving and stay injury-free: • Warm up before you exercise — walking, squatting, cycling, jumping jacks, arm circles, shoulder rolls or lunges. • Get your heart rate up, such as a brisk walk in a park with friends. • Aim for 30 minutes of exercise
every day — you can break this up into smaller 10-minute bursts of exercise throughout the day. • Build strength with weights a few times a week. • Add balance activities at least once a week — stretching, yoga, tai chi. • Focus on good posture — avoid the “head forward, rounded neck” posture when looking at your phone.
When to get checked Injuries are bound to happen whether you’re competing in sports or just taking a walk around the block. Minor injuries can often be treated at home with rest, ice, compression and elevation. But there are times when it’s important to see a doctor so you can avoid further damage and ensure that you can heal properly. It’s wise to get medical help if you experience the following symptoms after an injury: • Instability (unable to bear weight on your knee or ankle) • Limited range of motion • Numbness or tingling • Persistent joint pain • Significant swelling or tenderness • Weakness or lack of strength while moving a limb or muscle In addition, any impact to the head should be taken seriously, whether it’s from a sports collision or a minor fall at home. “When it comes to head injuries, always seek medical help for signs of concussion, such as any loss of consciousness, confusion or dizziness following a bump on the head,” Bryan said. If you need orthopedic care, Houston Methodist Orthopedic and Sports Medicine experts can evaluate and treat your injury, so you can get back to your active life. Major insurance plans are accepted. Conveniently located in Bellaire, Memorial City and the Texas Medical Center. Visit houstonmethodist.org/orthopedics or call 713.441.9000 to schedule an appointment with the appropriate physician.

Hiking a hit among area residents By Betsy Denson
Dora Cantú, M.D.
betsy@theleadernews.com
Mangum Manor’s Rebecca Fiszer used to walk her dog or do yardwork as her primary form of exercise. Then, four years ago, a friend suggested she join a hiking group. Fiszer joined several. Now she’s hooked. Fiszer said it motivates her to meet up with people who like to hike. One such group, Houston Urban Trekkers, does hikes close to her home along the White Oak Bayou trail. “People were so friendly,” she said. “Everybody talks. When you’re walking together, time flies by.” John Czach, a co-founder of Houston Urban Trekkers who also volunteers at the Museum of Natural Science, said he and his wife exercised on equipment at home for many years. But once he was widowed, he wanted to alter his routine. “I didn’t like tread milling in a big empty house (and) a neighbor suggested looking for things on meetup. com,” Czach said. “I found Houston Area Trails (HAT), and after years became an organizer with them.” While HAT does longer hikes in places outside of Houston, Czach said Houston Urban Trekkers concentrates in and around the inner loop. There are walks, hikes and sometimes bike rides in Spotts Park, Memorial Park and elsewhere. Members join and communicate on Meetup. “It’s nice to see a mix of regulars and new people. The mix is always changing a bit and we see people sometimes really hit it off,” Czach said. “But the main result just seems to be the shared experience of the walk itself. It’s mostly friends just keeping up with each other.” Fiszer said she considers herself a shy person but felt comfortable her first time out with a hiking group. Fiszer’s hiking groups have also opened her eyes to the natural spaces the area has to offer. “There is so much I didn’t realize within an hour’s drive,” she said. Another local group, Houston Women Hiking, was started as a closed Facebook group by area resi-

dent Bridgette Mongeon. “I created it because I love the back trails in Memorial Park,” she said on Facebook. “Not many people know they are back there, and so many women feel unsafe hiking alone. I can hardly believe we have grown to over 350 members. Not everyone comes out for a hike. I have posted hikes and ended up hiking alone, but then at other times we will have a group of 13.” Mongeon said the ability of the hikers ranges from beginners to advanced. “I always try to accommodate other people and their limitations,” she said. “Though we started in Memorial Park, people can post a hike anywhere. The idea is to meet women of the same interests. I have met some incredible women through the group and have felt supported through many life adventures while
we commune with the woods.” The science backs up the benefits of hiking. “Research shows that hiking has a positive impact on combating the symptoms of stress and anxiety,”
Dr. Gregory A. Miller of the American Hiking Society told WebMD. com. “Being in nature is ingrained in our DNA, and we sometimes forget that.”

Mother’s Day meaningful to Mendozas after surviving cardiac arrest Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader This year’s Mother’s Day could’ve been a tough one for Janet Mendoza. Several months prior, she was at risk of losing her mother, Amada Mendoza, after she experienced a cardiac arrest. “She was complaining of chest pain and feeling ‘burpy’. I just thought it was acid reflux or something, Janet Mendoza said. She and her mother went to the Memorial Hermann Urgent Care on Washington Avenue. As they were walking to the clinic, her mother collapsed, just feet away from the front door. “She kind of fell into me, and so once I got her carefully to the ground, I ran to the clinic and yelled for help. She was gasping for air and then I just saw her face go blank. I thought she was dead, Mendoza said. Nurses from the Urgent Care began CPR, while others called 911. “When someone goes into cardiac arrest, the sooner you can start CPR, the better. If the brain doesn’t get blood within four to five minutes, it can be damaged, said Mirza Baig, MD, the affiliated cardiologist who treated Amada at Memorial Her-
mann Greater Heights Hospital. Amada Mendoza underwent nearly 30 minutes of CPR and had to be shocked several times before she was taken to Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, where a stent was inserted to open that blockage that
had caused a heart attack and subsequent cardiac arrest. “I saw how hard everyone worked to try and save my mother’s life. It was like something out of a movie, really, Janet Mendoza said. “She woke up just a few hours after hav-
ing the surgery and didn’t have any lasting side effects from the cardiac arrest. It really shocked everyone. Dr. Baig said Amada Mendoza’s full recovery is due, in part, to the quick care she received. “She’s very lucky it happened close
to a medical facility because she got the immediate attention she needed. We don’t know how her heart or brain might have been damaged if she hadn’t received CPR as quickly as she did, Dr. Baig said. Sudden cardiac arrest often occurs without warning following a heart attack, or during recovery from a heart attack. Living a heart healthy lifestyle is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. That includes maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, participating in 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, and eating a heart healthy diet. Janet Mendoza said this Mother’s Day will be an especially poignant one. “I’m pretty close with my mom and I can’t imagine being without her. It was a really hard experience to go through and I can’t thank everyone enough for working so hard to save my mom, Mendoza said. To learn more about how to be heart healthy, visit heart.memorialhermann.org. To schedule an appointment with a Memorial Hermann affiliated cardiologist near you, call 713.222.CARE or visit us online at heart.memorialhermann.org/doctors
Nutrition plays important role in mental health By Shana Tatum statum@wellness-collaborative.com
It seems every month we have another health theme to consider. We are familiar with the pink ribbons that show up in October for breast cancer awareness, and when November arrives we see purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Now in May, we have Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental illness is a leading cause of disability around the globe. It is estimated that someone with mental illness spends 18.9% of their life suffering from symptoms associated with this condition. Disability costs are estimated at $8.5 trillion worldwide in mental, neurological and substance abuse care and treatment. While traditional psychiatry is the standard of care, less than half the people with mental illness see relief. Treatment with psychotropic medications is increasing, but the rates of success are not. There is recent evi-
dence to suggest that other interventions exist to treat and or complement conventional care. Biological processes such as inflammation, oxidative stress with mitochondrial dysfunction and microbiome dysbiosis seem to point to many psychiatric conditions. Nutrient density and dietary patterns have been key variables in research studies evaluating the intersection with mental illness. Nutritional psychiatry examines the role of diet in people with mental illness. Whole food diets consisting of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, fish, balanced monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as well as limiting processed foods in the diet are showing a positive association in treatment.
Nutritional biochemist Dr. William Walsh has researched nutrient therapy to address the seven most identifiable areas he found in those with mental illness. His studies working with more than 30,000 patients with mental illness revealed that each of these imbalances listed below plays a direct role in the synthesis and function of neurotransmitters. • Methylation (under or over) • Zinc deficiency • Copper deficiency • Folate deficiency or overload • Pyrole disorder • Toxic metal overload • Omega fatty acids EPA, DHA, AA deficiency How do vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids help with mental illness? Nutrients can have an effect on the regulation and synthesis of neurotransmitters, epigenetic regulation on gene expression, influence neurotransmitter reuptake processes and protection against oxidative stress. Vitamin B6, for example, is a
necessary cofactor in the methylation cycle, which occurs in each one of our 18 trillion cells. It is responsible for transferring amino acid and sulfur groups. Zinc affects the processing of dopamine, a feel-good chemical in the brain that regulates learning. Sometimes referred to as the mood mineral, low levels correlate with anxiety and behavior disorders. Copper helps prevent oxidative damage by serving as a cofactor with super oxidase dismutase, a key antioxidant enzyme for detoxification. Not only acting as cofactors, vitamins and minerals are chemical messengers to our microbiota. They help support a healthy microbiome encouraging neurotransmitter synthesis and communication. Omega-3 fatty acids are integral to brain nerve growth. Since the brain and nerves are composed largely of fat, it is critical we include these in the diet. Physical health must be part of the overall analysis for people who express mental illness. Lack of good
nutrition and therefore deficiencies it causes, development of food allergies, consumption of dyes and additives, processed and packaged foods can contribute to mental decline. Environmental exposure to heavy metals, herbicides and pesticides as well as side effects of medications may also contribute to a decrease in mental capacity. As with most things in health, it takes a multi-faceted approach. Many choices we make on a daily basis may affect our mental health. More progress can be achieved by looking further at micronutrient deficiencies, genetic expression and amino acid metabolism. Appropriate support can be designed to not only help manage symptoms but also potentially address the root cause. If you suspect your diet may be too low in some of the nutrients mentioned above or if you suffer from depression or anxiety, consider talking to your healthcare provider about nutrition and its role in your optimal health.

Computer Fatigue Syndrome can cause a variety of symptoms such as dry eye, headaches, and light sensitivity. But what causes Computer Fatigue Syndrome? Eye misalignment may be the guilty party behind many of your symptoms. When eyes are out of sync, or misaligned, it puts higher demand on the visual system which must work constantly to compensate for the misalignment. The neurolens measurement test is performed in less than 5 minutes during a regular eye exam. The test measures the degree of your misalignment at distance and near.

Bush mini-mural on utility box makes debut in Oak Forest By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
In an ongoing effort to highlight prominent women on the mini-murals that have adorned utility boxes in Houston City Councilwoman Ellen Cohen’s district, there is a new mural at the intersection of 43rd Street and T.C. Jester Boulevard. It features Barbara Bush, the wife and mother of former United States presidents, who died in April 2018. The painting of Bush, who served as First Lady from 1989-93, follows on the heels of a mural of Nobel Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai. That one was painted in February at T.C. Jester and Ella Boulevard. Bush joins other Texas notables, including U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, longtime Houston City Councilwoman Eleanor Tinsley and Governor Ann Richards on the utility boxes. Cohen, the councilwoman for District C as well as mayor pro tem, funded the murals with her 2018 Council District Fund and coordinated with UP Art Studio to complete them. The artist for the Bush mural is Dan Dollahon, a Sugar Land resident who has painted two other mini-murals, one on Broadway Street near Hobby Airport of Howard Hughes and his Spruce Goose, and another with an architectural theme in the Heights’ Norhill neighborhood. When Dollahon was working on the latest box a few weeks ago, he said several people stopped on a bike path to take photos of him and the work in progress. “People (in cars) would honk and wave,” Dollahon
said. “It amazed me how well it’s been received.” Dollahon, a graduate of the Art Institute of Houston who has worked in the decorative painting business for almost 30 years, said that when UP Art Studio sent out a call for designs, including Bush, he researched the former First Lady before submitting his design proposal in colored pencil. What he sent in comes close to the finished product. One side of the box depicts a more formal Bush in her trademark pearls with the White House in the background. The other side shows a more pensivelooking Bush and features a quote of hers – “The home is the child’s first school. The parent is the child’s first teacher. And reading is the child’s first subject.” The original design had a half-tone image of a young mother reading to a child in the background, but that was considered too ghostlike, so Dollahon substituted an image of the American flag. Once he started painting, Dollahon had to make other adjustments based on the dimensions of the box and the placement of its handles. Dollahon also offers landscapes and portraits for sale. Recently he has been working on a series of iconic musicians, using florescent paint which glows in black light. He has also submitted some additional designs to UP Art Studio for upcoming boxes. Cohen has said murals featuring Lady Bird Johnson, former Houston mayors Kathy Whitmire and Annise Parker and female Supreme Court justices are also planned.
