Car show for charity starts new tradition at Hartz Krispy Chicken received from well-known actors Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Diagnosed at Thanksgiving, Collier is undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer

By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Naro Mak, the owner of Hartz Krispy Chicken on Pinemont Drive, had been talking to some people in the neighborhood about hosting a car show at his restaurant. He was hesitant at first, because nearby MytiBurger does popular Myti Cruise events with classic cars. But once Mak settled on a broader scope of vehicles – and a charitable cause – the event took shape as “Chicken and Cars.” Muscle cars, classic cars, modern cars, exotics and Japanese cars were all on display April 25 at Hartz for what Mak plans to make a monthly event benefiting those in need. A portion of the proceeds from last week’s show went to a young boy fighting cancer. “For most, some of these cars could only be seen in the movies,” Mak said. “At Chicken and Cars, you can see them up close and talk to their owners and mechanics.” Some highlights included a Lamborghini, a Nissan 370Z and a Chevrolet Super Sport. Mak networked with local car clubs, including Isac Ramos from Exalted Royalty and Vanessa Flores from Clutch City Cartels, to get 26 show cars, and then others in the neighborhood showed up with their own for a total of 40 cars. Mak said more than 200 people attended the event. Some of the proceeds from food sales, totaling $350, went to the family of Kaleo Collier, a 3-year-old Houston boy fighting cancer. Collier, who was recently featured on KPRC because of the positive messages he’s

Business briefs: New restaurant set to occupy old Golden Café spot Brandon Piper of Piper Development confirmed Monday that the company is leasing the building at 1430 W. 19th St. from Hamid R. Foroudi, who has owned the building for almost 18 years and previously leased it to the proprietor of the former Golden Café. Piper said a new restaurant at that location will be similar to the former Grafittis at Union St., which his family owned at 2003 Union St. and closed in May 2017. The restaurant featured graffiti art on the walls and a menu of flame-grilled burgers, wings and steaks. Piper said it is uncertain whether the upcoming restaurant on 19th will keep the Grafittis name but said it will be a full-service bar and restaurant that will be both kidand pet-friendly. He said there is interior work being done in preparation for a summer opening. “It will be a great neighborhood spot,” Piper said. The Houston Architecture Information Forum helped provide information for this story.

Former Greensheet space sold for storage The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston-based GreenSpace Holdings purchased the former office space of classified publication Greensheet at 1690 North Loop West. Half of the 6.2acre property on the outskirts of the Heights, north of the Houston Farmers Market, was put back on the market for resale by GreenSpace because it

says it did not need all of the space for its plans to develop a three-story, self-storage facility built from shipping containers. The Harris County Appraisal District valued the property, formerly owned by Kathy Douglass and Helen Gordon Interests, at $6.7 million. MVR Publishing, a subsidiary of McElvy Media Group, which owns The Leader, purchased the Greensheet in September 2018. The Houston office is now housed at 2020 North Loop West, Suite 220. New owner seeks new heights for AAMCO care that’s responsibly and reasonably priced, Harry said. However, AAMCO also believes there’s more to service than just the business. For Harry and his vision, it’s about integrating themselves into the fabric of the Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. As members of the Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce, he said the store is making every effort to know the community. “People (in the Heights) are friendly, family-oriented and family focused. They have a

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care has been around the Heights for nearly three decades. But after new owner Brian Harry took over last year, he made a discovery that made him think some overhaul was required. “In a way, even though the store has been in the Heights for a long time, it is not very well-known in this area, said Harry, who has owned the store at 4730 N. Shepherd Dr. for just over a year. AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care is a nationally franchised chain of 675 shops across the U.S. and Canada. AAMCO began in 1957 and is the world’s leading transmission repair franchise, with more than 60 years of experience. AAMCO provides remanufactured and custom rebuilt transmissions that are AAMCO Factory Certified Remanufactured transmissions, updated with the latest parts, and are dyno tuned and pressure tested before leaving the factory. “My vision for this store is that it’s going to be a community-driven store that is also dedicated to providing superior services in auto repair for the community, Harry said.

Car Show from P. 1B benefit in March to help with medical costs and also host blood drives that earn the family credits with MD Anderson for Kaleo’s transfusions. Then, there are other friends like Mak who are lending a hand. Kaleo could not attend the event because he was in the hospital, but Tiara and her husband, Andrew, appreciated the support. “Thinking about (all the help) I become speechless, Tiara Collier said. “People are so caring. It has restored my faith in humanity. Mak is planning two more events, one in May and one in June. He wants the beneficiaries to be children and veterans. The May event will help the American Legion, and members of the group will barbecue brisket for the event. Mak hopes to have one or two food trucks on site as well to spotlight other local businesses. He’d also like to add kid’s activities. If you’d like to get involved, reach out to Mak at hartzchicken111@gmail.com. To begin, he hired an almost completely new staff – only one employee remains from the shop’s previous owner. A new general manager with 20 years of experience in the auto repair business is now on board, along with new technicians Harry says can give the best of multiple worlds, sensitive pricing and one of the industry’s most generous warranties. “(The technicians) are people with 25-30 years in the business, but they’ve also kept up with their learning and training in order to modernize their skills for today, he said. “We realize that people in the Heights are the types of people who have multiple cars

in the family. So, when they go out to look for car care, they’re looking for care in a place where they visit repeatedly. Your prices have to be sensible. In addition to transmission services, AAMCO offers a comprehensive set of Total Car Care Services carried out by well-seasoned and experienced technicians who are experts at diagnostics, such as free Vehicle Courtesy Check (VCC) and electronic scan, preventive maintenance services, clutch service and repair, standard transmission service and repair, brakes, rotors and caliper repair, and more. “We’re providing top-class

Catholic talent show raises funds, spirits From Staff Reports Students from St. Rose of Lima and St. Pius X participated in the “Catholic Schools Got Talent” show on Feb. 2 at St. Pius X High School, raising nearly $650 to aid veterans’ services and tuition assistance for Catholic school students. The event, conceptualized by St. Rose students, culminated Catholic Schools Week, a weeklong celebration of Catholic schools throughout the Greater Houston area. It show-

cased the talents of 12 Catholic school students in grades 4-8, who represented 11 schools and showed off their skills in song, dance, guitar, piano and drumming. Half of the $645.22 raised through ticket sales and the sales of “Holy Bear” teddy bears will be used for tuition assistance for Catholic school students. The other half went to the Travis Manion Foundation, which supports veterans. Students from St. Rose and St. Piux X presented a check to the

foundation on April 25. Next year’s show will be held on Feb. 1, 2020. “The most significant contribution in the inaugural year of the event was in the collaboration from schools across the Diocese – and St. Pius was so gracious in hosting,” St. Rose of Lima administrator Jennifer Saladino said. “We look forward to growing this event, and our contributions, to both providing a Catholic education to all who choose it as well as our veterans’ services.”

J

oin us on Friday, May 17, from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights as we celebrate the women of our community and the role they play at our homes and our offices. This is the third annual Women @ Work luncheon held by The Leader, and as last year’s attendees can attest, there is no event in the area like this.

About our Charity The Mission of Yahweh is a faith–based shelter that empowers, enriches and restrores the lives of homeless women and children and provides outreach services to low-income communities. Since 1961, The Mission has empowered our clients by providing basic life skills, education, job readiness, and spiritual enrichment. Our primary goal is to help with skills and education so residents can earn a livable wage as a path toward independence and permanent housing. We are able to house 125 women and children and on average 40% of that number are children.

A Pictorial Book Coming This Fall The Leader is seeking photos of those e in our area who have served in our nation’s armed forces. We are seeking all types of photos (headshots and snapshots) and military documents like maps, letters, draft cards, etc. For snapshots, we need a caption describing what is happening, where the photo was taken, and who is in it.

20% of proceeds will go to the Mission of Yahweh! About our Luncheon Speaker Courtney Zavala has spent more than 20 years covering news for network affiliates across the country while racking up multiple Emmy nominations. Recently she has returned back home to KPRC 2 where she spent 11 years as a news anchor and reporter.
