A special visit for local girl By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Mayor Sylvester Turner has barely been able to rest since taking office little more than one year ago as he attempts to solve each problem thrown at this city. However, in between the flurry of appointments and meetings with dignitaries – and just days removed from riding the Tour de Houston — he made a special stop in the Heights last Friday afternoon for one special little girl that tugged at his heartstrings. Eight-year-old Harvard Elementary second grader Sophie Blitz inquired to the mayor not long ago with a very pressing matter at hand – asking for sidewalk repairs so she could safely walk and ride her bike to school. “There is an unfinished sidewalk on 5th and Cortlandt. I ride my bike to school, so that is a problem. I have to ride on the street now. My mom says it is not safe to ride my bike on the street. Can you either build a bridge or finish the sidewalk?” she asked in a handwritten letter. “I will show you the bumpy sidewalk. It will be better if you fix it so I can ride on the sidewalk and you can help rebuild the sidewalk because it is bumpy.” Sophie’s plea tugged at the city leader’s heartstrings so much that he could not simply pen a response and go on with his day after seeing such innocence in the request. The sidewalk repairs were finished Friday afternoon and Turner himself was on hand to greet Sophie, inspect the work and even walk with the family for an afternoon gelato treat. “You can be as young as Sophie is but still move the hands of government. You’re never too young to be very powerful, and quite frankly, when a per-

son like Sophie speaks, that can be more powerful than people who are well-connected,” he said. “There’s just something about the innocence of a child asking for people to help them continue to be able to go to school and be safe.” “There was no agenda other than wanting the sidewalk fixed so she and others would not have to ride in the street. When a second-grade student takes the time to ask for help, when we can respond we should respond and try to do it in as timely a manner as we can,” he added. “[Sophie] is an exceptional student with an exceptional sister—I was very touched by it.” Sophie and her sister also presented the city’s leader with personal handmade masterpieces of ‘thank you cards’ — another gesture Turner said he found more touching and impactful than receiving even flamboyant gifts and trophies from the highest dignitaries. “I am so proud to be a Houstonian and the mayor of Houston because of people

like Sophie, Anna and this family—it’s just a great day in this city,” he said. “I’m just really happy it got fixed,” Sophie added with an ear-to-ear grin before helping Turner lay down a ramp to improve wheelchair access. Turner said Sophie didn’t just write for herself, she wrote for many others. “Because of your letter, we are out here responding and completing this sidewalk, not only to help you but help a lot of the other kids,” he said. Later, Turner reiterated that Friday represents just one facet in the city’s efforts to emphasize completing sidewalks in a state of disrepair. “For her it’s riding a bike, but there are many others in our city in wheelchairs who can’t traverse these sidewalks in the current state of disrepair,” he said. “It’s about recognizing who is needing these sidewalks in a good state so they can go places they need to get to. We’re going to work even harder to address the needs of many others in the city.”

got to be a part of this experience,” said Pinkston. “Every year there seems to be a little over 30 youth groups from inside and outside the Houston area that participate in this. That is a small fraction of the population that even have this opportunity.” Pinkston said he got into making Art Cars his first year at Frank Black in 2014-15. “Through it I have been able to reach students that I have had a hard time connecting with before we made the art car(s),” he said. “It is a way of looking at art outside of the box, outside of a usual way to exhibit art and one that captures a spirit that most art usually doesn’t evoke in many people.”

Students at Frank Black Middle School are still basking in the glow of their 1st Place “Best Youth Group” win at the recent Art Car Parade. “Hyppalectryon’s Candy Dreams” was designed and built by students along with teachers Julon Pinkston and Sarah Reavis. “A Hyppalectryon is a half chicken half horse - which was an oddity that came out of conversation and art making in the art classes,” said Pinkston. “Our car started as a mythological creature car, but realizing we were running short of time and materials to make it right, we switched themes

to include a candy landscape which would make the process much easier and effective.” Reavis and Pinkston guided students in as many as sixteen art classes in making edible looking larger than life items to be attached to the art car. It’s estimated that 300 students participated. This is the third FBMS Art Car made by students guided by Pinkston. Last year, their car “The Beastie Croonie-Kerploppus-Yalapapus” also won 1st Place “Best Youth Group” award. This year student Nicole Holton and teacher Sarah Reavis rode in the parade with Julon Pinkston at the wheel. Students were very excited about the win. “Better than any award for me was that the students all

Montessori students earn recognitions By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader There are many good schools in The Leader’s area. One, however, is working with children who are quietly racking up awards on the local and state levels. Garden Oaks Montessori is a magnet school in the Houston Independent School District, and operates as one of only 30 Montessori schools in Texas in a public system. In recent weeks, Garden Oaks Montessori 5th grader, Bryce Cruise, qualified to compete in the final leg of the “Texas Quiz Show. ” The fast-paced competition will be held on April 29 in Austin at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. All Competitors are in 4th to 8th grade, and will be quizzed with fun questions covering a variety of Texas topics. The show will be recorded in front of a live audience. There are two preliminary rounds, one semi-final, and a final round before the champion is identified. Museums have donated prizes, and the Texas State Historical Association underwrites the expenses of the children to attend. We are pulling for you Bryce! Student Lukas Bruegmann is in 2nd grade at Garden Oaks Montessori, and took 2nd place in the Houston Bar Association’s “Law Day” competition. Lukas’ poster design celebrating the 14th Amendment and its intent that all people should receive equal protection under the law, was a big hit with the judges. Law Day is a national celebration of the rule of law. Since 1961, the day has been sponsored by the American Bar Association. Take a bow Lukas! Texas State Representative Dwayne Bohac (Houston District 138) recently announced the names of students who will serve as honorary pages during the 85th Legislative Session at the Texas State Capitol. These students will spend one day accompanying full-time pages while they interface with representatives around the capitol complex.

“In high school, I had the opportunity to serve as an intern in Congressman Bill Archer’s Washington office,” Bohac stated. “That experience ultimately led me to become committed to public service. My intent is to provide a similar experience to the young people of my district.” Twenty-three page participants were selected from several hundred applications. All ages were considered, and six students from Garden Oaks Montessori will go to Austin. The students include Brooke Naumann, grade 7, Gregory Naumann, grade 7, Janelle Naumann, grade 7, Catherine Penfold, grade 2, Addison Perry, grade 3, and Houston Perry, grade 4. Congratulations to all! Dr. Lindsey Pollock is the principal at Garden Oaks Montessori, and we asked her what she thinks sets her school apart. “We have a deeply dedicated staff of teachers, and we enjoy many wonderful parent volunteers. The parents really make a difference, but the Montessori method itself deserves some credit; it helps children identify and pursue their passions,” Pollock said.

Helping baby birds in distress

Dear Tabby, With it being spring in Houston, I’m seeing (and hearing!) lots of bird nests full of baby birds. I have outdoor cats and I worry about baby birds falling out of their nests. What should I do if I find a baby bird in distress? Bird Nerd in Forest West Dear Bird Nerd, Birds do it. Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it…’tis the season for mating and (subsequently) babies. Birds are at their most vulnerable when they’re newly-hatched and dependent upon their parents for food and safety. Unfortunately, spring in Houston also can mean gusty, rainy weather, so baby birds can be in particular peril during our spring storms and windy days. Depending on the apparent age of the baby bird, what you should do if you encounter one in trouble differs slightly. For nestlings: (Nestlings are completely helpless young birds that can’t walk, hop or fly. They won’t have any feathers and usually take that classic baby bird pose of a mouth wide open.) When at all possible, nestlings should be returned to the nest quickly--it’s their best hope for survival. If the nest has been destroyed or is unreachable, you may substitute a strawberry basket or small box lined with tissue and suspend it from a branch near to where you believe its nest is located. Nestlings get cold very quickly so if yours feels cold to the touch, warm it in your hands and then place it into a box with a covered hot water bottle on the bottom (use lukewarm water). Never give any water or milk. Both can kill the nestlings by getting into

their lungs. Caring for a baby bird is a delicate and demanding task that should be done by a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. Luckily, we have the Texas Wildlife Rescue Center (http://www.twrcwildlifecenter.org/) located nearby. They accept all injured or abandoned wildlife and expertly care for them until they’re ready to be released. For fledglings: Fledglings will have some feathers and maybe tufts of down. Since their flight feathers are not fully developed, they can only flutter from branch to branch and often rest in the grass in between practice flights. If the bird can balance on your thumb, then it’s a fledgling and should be out of the nest. Leave it alone and put it back where you found it--just make sure it will be safe. Watch from afar and you’ll probably see mom and dad return within half an hour. The touching myth: Don’t worry about touching baby birds. It’s a fallacy that the parents will reject the baby if touched. Birds don’t have a developed sense of smell. While

fledglings can be left on the ground, nestlings should be returned immediately to the nest. Many species of birds such as robins, scrub jays, crows and owls leave the nest and spend as many as 2-5 days on the ground before they can fly. This is a normal and vital part of the young birds’ development. While they are on the ground, the birds are cared for and protected by their parents and are taught vital life skills (finding food, identifying predators, flying). Taking these birds into captivity denies them the opportunity to learn skills they will need to survive in the wild. Unless a bird is injured, it is essential to leave them outside to learn from their parents. Do your best to remove neighborhood hazards, such as cats and children who might unknowingly harm the bird. So, the name of the game is to wait and see when you find a baby bird and only intervene when absolutely necessary. Do you have a question for Tabby? If so, email her at: dear tabby questions@gmail.com

Neighbors: Scarborough High School Theater presents two plays By Elizabeth Villareal elizasgarden@outlook.com

Theater buffs, get your opera glasses ready! This Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Scarborough High School Theater, the Theater Arts Program is performing two short plays. The first play is “Dear Mom” featuring Deborah Akery as Mom, and Alexi Silva and Kathryn Leal as Racheal. The second play is “Push” featuring Thai Nguen as Billy, Katarina Johnson as Eve, Jeimy Garcia as Mom, David Guevara as Dad and Jeovanny Huerta as Javier. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults at the door. Both plays address issues facing teens in today’s world – “Dear Mom” is about a mother/daughter relationship and “Push” addresses bullying, suicide, homosexuality and acceptance. Scarborough’s Theatre Arts Director Dominic Klovensky shared, “This is our first full year of the program. These students are theater students who tried out and were cast for the play. Scarborough’s Theater Arts students participated in UIL competitions this year in One Act Play, Small Actors, and they did very well. We need upgrades to our sound system, wireless lapel microphones for our actors so they can be heard better in the auditorium, lights and gels, and costumes. Proceeds raised with ticket sales from this week’s performances will go towards those much needed tools.” Girl Scout Troop 24129 is hosting a uniform drive for Stevens Elementary School. Exciting things are happening at this school that now offers a S.T.E.A.M. Magnet curriculum, but Leslie Novak, Magnet Coordinator at Stevens, has observed they have quite a few families from Mexico and Central America who have nothing when they start school in the fall. Needed are khaki or navy bottoms and any solid color polo shirts. Sizes needed are 4T-14/16. Also being accepted are gen-

tly used backpacks. This is a perfect time to clean out those closets! Donations can be dropped off at Stevens Elementary, 1910 Lamonte Ln. through May 8, or contact Troop Leader Kathy Armstrong at ltarmstrong@peoplepc.com. The girls of Troop 24129 thank you for your donations. Congratulations to Shepherd Forest neighbor Kristi Grizzle, who was recently recognized by the Houston Business Journal in its list of “40 Under 40” Outstanding Professionals for 2017. Nominees were judged on leadership, overcoming challenges and community involvement. Grizzle is a Principal with Walter P. Moore and Associates Inc. She received her Master and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. As a licensed professional engineer in Texas, she provides structural engineering and project management on a variety of project types including higher education, commercial, civic/municipal and mixed use projects. Most recently she completed the George R. Brown Convention Center renovation. Outside of her professional life, Grizzle devotes much of her time to volunteering including service as a Child Advocate for at-risk children, teaching at St. Anne Catholic Church, and volunteering for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She is an alumni of Leadership Houston Class XXXII, and is a board member and President-Elect of the Rice Design Alliance. Happy birthday to Jeremy Hunt, your Oak Forest neighbor, who celebrated his birthday on April 24. Hunt competed and finished in the Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Triathlon in Galveston. Jeremy and his lovely wife Christine are known for their devotion to Houston’s children and teens, especially through the Heights and Waltrip Young Life ministry. The Oak Forest Homeowners Association would like to

thank Pinch Seafood and Bar for donating and cooking the crawfish for the 2017 Annual Oak Forest Crawfish Fest and Family Fun Day which was held this past weekend at 5050 Acorn Golf and Icehouse. Martha Mears, OFHA President, said, “The crawfish were plentiful, cooked to perfection and the beer was cold, thanks to Purav Patel with Village Liquor who donated the 8th Wonder Beer. Thanks to Platinum Sponsor Dr. Neela Patel who was on hand with great cozies to keep beer and water cold. Many thanks to Mario Barrera, Darlene’s Gifts & Flowers, and Quality Feed for donating items for the Silent Auction. Huge thanks goes out to 5050 Acorn Golf & Icehouse for providing the space for the event and donating a percentage of sales on April 22 to the Neighborhood Patrol Program. Betsy Smith, General Manager, and Janet Robbins, Golf Pro, there at 5050 Acorn Golf consistently make a significant effort to give back to the community. Thanks to other sponsors such as Raising Cane’s for the donation of lemonade and sweet tea, Justin Gordon for providing tables and chairs and Scott Sherill and Jake Schneider for their time and trucks to transport those tables and chairs. Special thanks to SEAL, My Fitness House and Verisolar for supporting the Oak Forest Neighborhood Patrol Program. Thank you to the volunteers who worked diligently to get the word out, to organize and execute the event - Rufus Estis, OFHA Treasurer; Andrea Shiloh, OFHA Director of Community Relations; Jonathan Crites, OFHA 2nd VP; Marie Kallus, OFHA Director of Neighborhood Patrol Program; Linda Kelly, OFHA Secretary; Jane Johnston, volunteer; and Lang Eng, volunteer. Postseason Preview By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader

Leader-area baseball teams are in their final week of their respective regular seasons, and five are still in the hunt for the playoffs. While a couple of them are a lock for the postseason, this week could have important implications regarding seeding. Below is the status of each team and where they stand moving forward. Heights Bulldogs The Bulldogs are on the precipice of making it to the UIL 6A Region III playoffs for the second consecutive year after missing out three years ago when they made the jump from 5A. Heights started the year 40-1 and has continued riding a hot streak. They are currently 17-5-1 overall, and their most impressive feat is that they have not lost consecutive games this season. The Bulldogs are in the driver seat in terms of their playoff fate, since they sit in second place. They close out the season against the no. 3 school in the district, Bellaire High School, followed by no. 1 Lamar High, who is the no. 12 ball club in Texas, according to Maxpreps. The team has relied on its stingy defense to win them games. The defensive unit has given up only 51 runs throughout 23 games this season. Lutheran North Lions After a promising 3-0 nondistrict start, the Lions have stumbled through their league schedule and sit 5.5 games behind the third and final playoff spot, which is currently held by Cypress Christian School, whom LHN split the season series with. The Lions will finish out their season with a two-game series against newcomer St. Thomas Episcopal, who will be looking for their first district win of the season. Although the club will graduate its largest senior class since head coach Andy Moore took over in 2015, he’ll still have the advantage of returning several key players next spring. Scarborough Spartans The Spartans are looking to make the postseason for the third straight year under head

coach Edgar Villalta and are also in charge of their secondseason destiny, as they hold the second seed in UIL 4A Region III-District 24 standings. Their two remaining games are against Kashmere and Wheatley High Schools. The Spartans have encountered both teams previously this season and rocked Kashmere 15-4, while they fell in a highscoring 14-13 shootout versus Wheatley. They will likely need to take at least one of those games in order to qualify for the playoffs, depending on how the rest of the league plays out. St. Pius X Panthers The Panthers have the luxury of playing in Texas Associations of Private and Parochial Schools Division I District-I, which means that all but one of the five teams in the league qualifies for the playoffs. A big reason behind this is because the level of play is enormous within the district, as all five teams are ranked in Texas, according to Maxpreps. With that said, SPX is in third place behind Concordia Lutheran, who is undefeated in district, and St. Thomas. There is a chance that the Panthers can make a push for the twoseed, since they close out the season against rival St. Thomas at home. It is unlikely that SPX will miss the playoffs since they are two games ahead of fourth place and three ahead of last. If they stand pat, they will likely play Plano’s John Paul II or Fort Worth’s Nolan Catholic in the first round. St. Thomas Eagles The Eagles are the highest rated club in The Leader area, coming in at no. 187 in the state, according to Maxpreps. They play in the same league as the Panthers and are two games ahead of them with three district games remaining. STHS has jumped to the second seed behind an explosive offense that averages 6.67 runs

per game in district. Although they have a game remaining versus Concordia, who sits atop the standings, the best the Eagles can finish is second place. If the Eagles remain in their current position, they will likely face Prestonwood Christian, whom St. Thomas lost to in the state semifinals last year. Waltrip Rams After running the table in UIL 5A Region III District 20 play last year, the Rams are poised to do it again this year, although they are in a battle for first against Milby High School, who just moved down from 6A. They close out the regular season at home against Sterling High School. Once in the playoffs, the Rams will look to get past the first round for just the first time in Head Coach Mike Evans’ four-year stint at Waltrip.
