Local runners conquer Texas Independence Relay By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Preferred Health DIRECTORY Chiropractic Care
For Garden Oaks resident Shawn Vaughn, participating in the Texas Independence Relay was an idea she just couldn’t shake. “It was something that I was invited to do a few years ago but I got pregnant with my third child,” Vaughn said. “Since then, I’d wanted to do it but didn’t know how to set up a team.” Vaughn educated herself on the race, which was held March 30-31 and totaled more than 183 miles with 36 relay legs of various lengths. The course started in Gonzales, where Col. John Henry Moore challenged Mexican soldiers trying to retrieve a cannon to “come and take it,” and finished in Houston, where the Battle of San Jacinto helped cement an independent Texas in 1836. Vaughn’s team, Notorious HRG, completed the two-day course in 30 hours, 12 minutes, and 49 seconds. Texas Independence Relay teams can have up to 12 members who run through the towns of Gonzales, Shiner, Moulton, Flatonia, SchulenContributed photo burg, Weimar, Borden, Columbus, Altair, Eagle Lake, Wallis, Orchard, Excited members of Notorious HRG celebrate at the finish line of this year’s Texas Independence Relay race. Food briefs: Vegan restaurant now open in Heights By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com From the food truck Ripe Cuisine to its first brick and mortar as Verdine, the restaurant was more than a year in the making. Verdine, 449 W. 19th St., is now neighbors with Hopdoddy Burger Bar in the Heights Waterworks Development as announced on Verdine’s Instagram page. It is open daily from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. The menu is fully vegan but was designed to appeal to both carnivores and vegetarians. Entrees include Spinach Dosa, made with spinach-chickpea dosa; Krabby Patty, made with a jackfruit-artichoke crab cake burger; Bistro Burger, made with an organic lentil-walnutmushroom patty; Waterworks Cheeseburger, made with a Beyond Meat burger patty; and Jackfruit Carnitas, made with slow-cooked, smoked jackfruit. Side options are French fries or sweet potato fries that come with housemade raisin-
sweetened ketchup. Also available is a kale salad with tahinimaple dressing. A kids and dessert menu are coming soon as well as extended hours. Balls Out is out After opening in the Heights almost two years ago, the Balls Out Burger brick and mortar has closed. In a response given to CultureMap, owner Ian Tucker expressed his disappointment that the concept didn’t turn out the way he had hoped, but that rumors of its demise have been exaggerated. “Not only is the concept alive and well,” Tucker said to CultureMap, “we technically have locations everywhere from Uptown to Downtown and all points in between thanks to the Balls Out Burger food truck, which delivers the same high-quality burgers, fries and shakes that people love, so I take solace in that.” Revive Development, which owns the property, is searching for a new tenant.
Relay, from P. 1B Vaughn said some of the group got together to run, but there was no formal training. Before the relay, Torregrossa’s longest race was 7 miles – 14 years beforehand. “I followed a half-marathon, 12-week training schedule starting in January and did many days of CrossFit in the morning and running at night,” Torregrossa said. “Unfortunately about a month before the race my training was cut short by a knee injury, so I had to take a break from running. Luckily my knee recovered in time.” Benesch, a runner for 25 years and frequent marathon participant, was drafted the week of the relay to take the place of another injured member. “I didn’t even have time to stress out about it,” she said. A test of endurance On the first day of the relay, Torregrossa said the team members all ran one mile at the beginning before splitting up into a running group and resting group. The individual legs of the race ranged from 2.77 miles to 7.11 miles. The women on Vaughn’s team ran between 11 and 20 miles. Non-runners would leap frog in a van to their next leg. The total race time was about 30 hours, with four- or five-hour breaks for the team members between runs. “It wasn’t enough time to get good sleep,” Vaughn said. Brewer ran 15 total miles across three legs of the race, one of them in the middle of the night. She said that was a first for her. “It was pure adrenaline that pushed me through,” she said. Another team member, Fieldhouse, who participated in the relay in place of her husband the previous year, ran 18

The team MVP might have been Marysia Norris, who didn’t want to race but volunteered to drive the team van. “She drove most of the 36 hours, getting out to give runners water (and) take gear,” Cockrum said. “In other words, hers was by far the hardest job.” The finish line was at the Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park where there was a celebration that included pizza and beer. “We beat our estimated time by 30 minutes, which means everyone ran faster than they thought they would,” Benesch said. “It was an awesome experience and I’m so glad I got the chance to participate. Strong women pushing through a difficult race, tired, dirty, but still cheering on the other teammates and working toward a common goal.” That being said, most members said they wouldn’t be back. “It was a test of personal strength and growth for me,” Brewer said. “It was 30 hours of running and riding in a car. We slept in a Whataburger and Buc-ee’s parking lot. I’m so glad I’ve got this down in the books, but I’m on to the next challenge.” The hashtag for the group was #fornextyearwhenweneverdothisagain Team captain Vaughn is on to another race, the Blue Bell Half Marathon 2019 with her 13-year-old daughter. “It’s her first one,” she said. With Vaughn as her mom, it likely won’t be her last.

The Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets program has begun, with a location in Acres Homes. Find full details about the program online at http://www.houstontx.gov/health/farmersmarkets/.
City’s affordable farmers market program under way From Staff Reports The Houston Health Department is once again making fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable with the launch of its eighth Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets season, which kicked off Wednesday. The 2019 markets will offer SNAP beneficiaries a dollar-for-dollar match up to $20 spent on fresh fruits and vegetables through the Urban Harvest Double Up Houston program. This year, the season runs
through Sept. 26. Markets are held twice weekly at seven multi-service centers across the city. Sites include the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center at 6719 W. Montgomery Rd., where produce will be available April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19. “These markets provide a mutual benefit to farmers, shoppers and local economies by allowing farmers to sell high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables directly to the community, meeting the area’s
demand for fresh produce,” said Dr. Faith Foreman-Hays, head of the city health department’s Office of Chronic Disease, Health Education and Wellness. Since launching in 2011, the markets have benefited more than 20,000 underserved families and distributed more than 500,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables in Houston. For more information about the markets, incentives and health programs, visit houstontx.gov/health/farmersmarkets or call 832-393-4054.
Stretch your dollars with Get Moving food access programs. • $30 Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for WIC-eligible clients • FRESH Rx fruit and vegetable prescription voucher for participating in a health screening visit or health education class at participating locations • Dollar-for-dollar match up to $20 on EBT/Lone Star Card purchases with Urban Harvest, Double Up Houston, seasonal deals and bundles to make fruits and vegetables more affordable! • Cash, credit, debit, Lone Star Card/EBT/SNAP are accepted.

Protein intake key to healthy diet By Shana Tatum
statum@wellness-collaborative.com
Protein is one of three macronutrients needed in the diet to maintain health. It is a component of all living things. It is required by the human body for the most basic of cell activity, including that of bones, muscles and blood. Protein also helps maintain a healthy metabolism and strengthens the immune system. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Much of the body’s communication systems rely on amino acids for things such as neurotransmitters and hormones as well DNA and RNA. Amino acids are obtained through the diet in a variety of ways. Animal proteins are considered complete proteins as they contain the essential amino acids the body needs. Plant proteins such as beans

eral recommendation. For those training or with high physical activity, a range of 1.5-2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight may be more appropriate. Because the body is using food to build and repair, it is important to consume your protein intake at several times throughout the day and not just at one meal.
kilograms and are moderately active, your target protein consumption would be 66 grams per day. You can find the amount of protein per serving on nutrition labels. For whole foods or other packaged foods you may search the USDA Food Composition Database at ndb.nal. usda.gov/ndb/. Apps such as Myfitnesspal, Bitesnap, Lose it or Chronometer also will calculate protein macronutrients based on your description or picture of food. When evaluating an overall plan, a healthy adult protein intake should equal between 10-35% of calories per day.
There are unique circumstances such as chronic kidney disease in which protein intake may be restricted. When making dietary changes, be sure to check with your physician or dietitian for personalized recommendations. Food High in Protein 3 oz. serving beef (21 g) 3 oz. serving salmon or tuna (17 g) 1 egg (6 g) 6 oz. Greek yogurt (17 g) 1 cup milk (8 g) ½ cup cooked beans (8 g) 2 tbsp. peanut butter (8 g)

It is important to consume your protein intake at several times throughout the day. and legumes are incomplete proteins, which do not contain the essential amino acids but offer vitamins and minerals such as folate and magnesium. Dairy, nuts and seeds are all foods that provide protein as well as carbohydrates and fats. Knowing the right amount of dietary protein to consume can aid in maintaining optimal health. Protein needs vary by individual based on age, sex, weight and activity level. In some cases, health status may also be a factor in determining the appropriate amount for you. With so many diet trends claiming results for weight loss, sustained energy and detoxification, it can be confusing to know the right balance. While the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans do not make specific protein recommendations, the Dietary Reference Intake suggests 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. This would be a gen-
To calculate your needs: Step 1 -- Measure your current weight. Step 2 -- Convert pounds to kilograms by dividing by 2.2. For example, 145 pounds divided by 2.2 pounds per kilogram equals 66 kilograms. Step 3 -- Choose activity level between sedentary (seated or lying all day with no physical activity, 0.8 g/ kg), moderately active (spend most of the day sitting with occasional standing or walking and participate in moderate activity, 1.0 g/kg), very active (either standing or walking for most of the day or participate in physical activity such as exercising at the gym or attending spin classes regularly, 1.2 g/kg) and vigorously active (strenuous work or high intensity exercise each day, 2.0 g/kg). Step 4 -- Multiply your weight in kilograms by the activity level recommendation. For example, if you weigh 66

Neighbors: Art cars and cooking for a good cause By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com The Shepherd Park Plaza Backyard Garden Tour has been rescheduled for 11 a.m.4 p.m. Sunday to avoid last weekend’s stormy weather. These April showers are producing some beautiful flowers! Julie Hetrick, event chairman, and fellow SPP garden club members have put together a community event that includes four fascinating SPP backyards, the Durham Elementary Gardens, refreshments from Girl Scout Troops 122309 and 122272, and a bargain-hunter’s plant sale. The backyards feature a pool oasis, beautifully landscaped gardens of flowers, vegetables and fruits, fun edibles and spectacular potted plants. Garden club experts will be available at the plant sale. Advance tickets for $10 are available on www.shepherdparkplaza.com (click on the link under Upcoming Events). Tickets on the day of the tour are $15 and will be available at 1147 Thornton Rd. Admission is free for children under 10. The tour benefits Durham PTA and the neighborhood Constable Program. In support of Parkinson’s Awareness Month and World Parkinson’s Disease Day on Thursday, please reach out to our neighbors who have Parkinson’s Disease and let them know you care. Thursday marked the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who figured out the connection between brain and body 200 years ago. There are special programs and celebrations throughout April and you can find information through the Houston Area Parkinson Society (“HAPS”) at hapsonline.org. HAPS is a lifeline for many and offers social programs and assistance such as The Parkinson’s Enrichment Program, Painting with Parkinson’s and even dance and yoga! They offer education,
speech therapy, exercise and support as well as social services like transportation to doctor visits, emergency financial aid, and helping clients maintain independence for as long as possible. With three of them our own community neighbors, these six HAPS employees: Kathleen Crist, Celeste Harris, Maggie Abbott, Angelica Rodriguez, Madelyn Perry and Gini Brown are making a difference every day for folks with PD. Crist is a licensed master social worker and executive director, Harris is a licensed master social worker and director of social services, Abbott has a doctorate in physical therapy and is director of education, Rodriguez is manager of therapeutic programs, Perry is manager of special events and Brown is their administrative assistant. This team works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for hundreds of Houstonarea residents affected by PD through service, education and advocacy. Love some BBQ? Be sure to attend Blues, Brews and Barbecue at the Picnic for Parkinson’s benefiting Houston Area Parkinson Society (HAPS) chaired by Kelly and Matthew Simon. This fun-filled event will include live blues music, a barbecue cookoff and silent auction. Cookoff teams will submit their best meat, sauce and side to compete for the Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice* Awards! from noon5 p.m. Sunday (VIP entry at 11 a.m.) at Wicklow Heights, 1027 W. 19th St. VIP tickets to the event are $70. Entry includes early event entry, a swag bag, a sample from each cookoff team and access to venue with live music. General tickets to the event are $40. Entry includes a sample from each cookoff team and access to venue with live music. For more information, see hapsonline.org/events/bbb or contact Madelyn Perry at
Contributed photo Cynthia and Johnny Rojas shown with their creation “The Bat Wing,” which was recently removed from the Art Car Museum exhibit. It is appearing at Saturday’s Art Car Parade and car shows this spring on a tour dubbed “The Cowboy Flies Away.”
perry@hapsonline.org. Are you ready to rumble? Get ready, the 32nd Annual Art Car Parade is here! Events are scheduled from Thursday through Sunday and the parade is Saturday through Downtown Houston and along Allen Parkway. Bring lawnchairs, SPF 50 sunblock, some cold liquid refreshment in your cooler and prepare to be amazed. Heights High School and Frank Black Middle School both have fantastic art cars in the parade again this year. For more information on the parade, events before
and after (live music and food trucks at The Lineup Party!) and more, as well as special reserved seating, check out thehoustonartcarparade.com. There are tons of ways to enjoy the parade and this is such a fun event for all ages. About 75 percent of the cars are from the Houston area and a good number of those artists live in the community. Oak Forest neighbor Johnny Rojas and his wife Cynthia are taking Rojas’ famous Bat Wing art car out on its 15th anniversary tour this spring and will also be driving in the parade.

The Promise of Easter It is no coincidence that the celebration of Easter takes place each year in early spring, commemorating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For Easter is a celebration of rebirth, and what better time to celebrate this than when the earth is springing back into life. The new life of spring reminds us that this world is eternally productive and creative. The apparent lifelessness of winter is only an illusion. Sleeping just beneath the surface, is life and more life, awaiting GodÕs gentle touch to reawaken it. In the same way, Easter reminds us that the death of our bodies is an illusion. Beneath it is life and more life. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world the He gave us His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We will one day shed our bodies, as the trees shed their leaves and snakes shed their skins, and we will be reborn into life everlasting. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. New K.J.V. John 10:28
