MHNW doubles size of ER By Karen Kephart for The Leader

In the 10 years he’s served as medical director of the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Emergency Center, Harparminder Chadha, M.D., FRCS, FACEP, has watched the Greater Heights area expand and flourish as new families moved into its neighborhoods, and new businesses and restaurants opened to meet their needs. He’s also witnessed the realization of a longtime dream – the creation of a modern, state-of-theart Emergency Center designed to move people in need of emergent care through admission, treatment and discharge quickly in a patientfriendly atmosphere. The redesigned Emergency Center opened in April. “By nearly doubling the size of

the Emergency Center and restructuring our processes, we’re striving to eliminate the long wait,” says Dr. Chadha, who directs a staff of 14 affiliated, board-certified emergency physicians. “Patients enter through the main entrance of the hospital at a convenient drop-off area and are greeted by a receptionist and security officer who guide them to the Emergency Center. Triage nurses are available to see patients immediately in two specially designed triage rooms. Stroke, chest pain and trauma patients receive immediate care. Patients who are stable are moved into the first available private exam room, where a healthcare provider assesses them and discusses treatment. The average time a patient See Emergency, P. 2B

Ahh-choo Want to de-stress? Tips on preventing Consider a Heights’ Tai Chi class By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com

Brigitte Cunningham started doing Tai Chi when she lived in California and appreciated its benefits, including increased flexibility and balance. “It’s wonderful exercise,” she said. When she moved to the Heights, she was eager to continue the ancient Chinese martial art turned exercise, but couldn’t find a nearby class. That’s when she helped organize one. When looking for a suitable instructor Cunningham heard about Greg Illich, who leads Tai Chi classes at various places in Houston, including one on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings at the Houston

Arboretum & Nature Center. He also offers private lessons at 2990 Richmond. Illich’s class in the Heights is held from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Proctor Plaza Center, 803 W. Temple. The cost is only $5 per class. Tai Chi is also referred to as Taiji Quan. Taiji is usually translated “the grand ultimate, which refers to the balance between yin and yang (soft and hard) in everything. Quan means “fist” or self defense. It is an internal martial art which is practiced slowly with an adherence to certain principles which foster the development and flow of energy in the body to improve health and foster longevity. The ultimate goal is balance and har-

mony with mind and body. Illich has more than 27 years experience in various Tai Chi forms. He studied Tai Chi, specifically the Yang Style Long Form, with Master Nguyen Cao Thanh at the University of St Thomas. His current teacher for the past 21 years is Grandmaster George Hu. “Grandmaster Hu taught me an older Yang style called the secret yang style or ‘Michuan’. It is the style I prefer because of its overall health benefits and embodiment of the three circles in Tai Chi,” said Illich. “After studying with Master Hu, I was able to improve my posture, be free of persistent lower back pain, and drastically reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. He taught me how to make Tai Chi work for me in a practical sense.” There are other major Tai Chi styles are named after the Chinese families who brought them into being: Chen-style - the oldest which originated in the 17th century, Wu Hao-style, Wu-style and Sun-style. For the group in the Heights, Illich is teaching the Michuan style, featuring the thirteen short form kinetic movements. “It emphasizes the non-linear movements of Tai Chi as you learn a See Tai Chi, P. 4B

seasonal allergies

The season of allergy-induced sniffles and other complications is right around the corner. If you are one of the millions of people affected by seasonal allergies that lead to nasal swelling, sneezing, watery eyes, and a scratchy throat, you may not be eagerly anticipating the warmer weather as much as others. Allergy research is ongoing, and in the future doctors may be able to prevent allergic reactions from occurring rather than treating the symptoms that ensue. Until then, you will have to work with the remedies that currently exist. These remedies include antihistamines, which can cause dangerous interactions with other medications and may cause drowsiness. These side effects can be dangerous for use in seniors. Consider these other options instead. Drink plenty of fluids. Although liquids can’t wash the allergens out of your system, water, juice and clear broths can help loosen congestion. Hot liquids can soothe inflamed membranes in the nose and throat. Avoid allergens as much as possible. Check weather reports for the levels of particulates in the air and stay indoors if they are high. Keep away from tall grasses and places with a lot of foliage. Use the air conditioning. Rather than keeping the windows wide open, use an air conditioner and dehumidifier to filter the air coming inside of the house and ensuring it is cool and dry. Head to the beach. If you want to spend time outdoors, areas by the ocean will have pollen counts that are much lower than in mountainous areas. Dry clothes indoors. Line-dried clothes may smell fresh, but they can bring molds and pollens indoors and exacerbate allergies. Shower frequently. After being outdoors, take a shower to rinse off any allergens clinging to hair and skin. Check with a doctor. Before mixing allergy medications with any prescriptions you are taking, ensure that they are safe to mix. If your doctor is unavailable, consult with a pharmacist about drug interactions.

By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

When Dr. Aijaz Ali Khowaja co-founded the Ibn Sina Foundation’s first medical clinic 13 years ago in southwest Houston, it was only open four hours per week. Ibn Sina, a non-profit, has built five additional clinics and is open 12 hours per day, serving 85,000 patients per year. It is currently working on opening a sixth clinic, on N. Shepherd, to serve uninsured and underinsured patients in the area. The location is in a former bank and will be expanded from 4,073 square feet to 6,531 square feet. The City of Houston funded the construction of the new building through its Housing and Community Development Department, and medical and dental equipment were donated by Cullen Trust for Health Care, Episcopal Health Care and Houston Endowment. Ibn Sina handles the operating costs of the clinic. The clinic is open to anyone, and patients are treated on a first-come, first-serve basis. Expanded Emergency Center Opens at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Emergency, from P. 1B spends in an exam room is 15 to 30 minutes. Our goal is to move patients through the Emergency Center as quickly as possible.” Patients who require further treatment or stabilization are sent to one of eight “verticalbed” rooms equipped with a recliner, television and stateof-the-art medical equipment. Those who are alert and stable and waiting for the results of lab or imaging tests are escorted to the comfortable “results-pending” area. Depending on the nature of their problem, patients may be sent from an assessment room to a procedure room for a splint or sutures. Memorial Hermann’s $10 million investment in the largest and busiest Emergency Center in the service area created 41 remodeled private rooms, including an 11-room observation center with ad-

vanced monitoring equipment and its own nurses station and physician work area. Three trauma rooms used for major traumas, accidents and resuscitation are equipped with the latest medical technology, including an innovative utility boom system that allows physicians 360-degree access to patients, which is especially important in the treatment of trauma or high-acuity patients. The hospital’s Level III trauma center is minutes away from the Level I adult and pediatric Texas Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, via Memorial Hermann Life Flight. Two negative-pressure isolation rooms are designed to control the escape of infectious bacteria, and a decontamination room is available for patients who have been exposed to hazardous materials. The Center’s ambulance

bay accommodates five ambulances simultaneously and is equipped with Shoreline plugs that eliminate the need for ambulances to run continuously on diesel power while parked at the hospital, which keeps diesel fumes away from the ambulance entrance. “When patients are ready to be discharged, they’re seen by dedicated discharge nurses who take vital signs, review the doctor’s discharge instructions and answer any questions about follow-up treatment or prescribed medications,” Dr. Chadha says. “We also try to connect them with a primary care provider if they don’t currently have one.” Approximately 52,000 patients pass through the doors of the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital Emergency Center each year, and many are admitted to the 260-bed hospital, which has been recognized nationally and regionally for its quality and safety

record, including the “Best in Texas” Quality Award from the TMF Health Quality Institute and Healthgrades’ America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award‚ for the fifth consecutive year (together with Memorial Hermann Southeast, Memorial Hermann Southwest and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands hospitals). The hospital’s Chest Pain Center is accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, which developed the accreditation process to ensure accurate diagnosis and fast treatment of patients with symptoms of heart attack. Currently, there are only 400 accredited chest pain centers in the United States, representing about 10 percent of American hospitals. A Camp for victims of child abuse If you are a survivor of child sexual abuse, you are not alone. The demographics show that no one is immune - child sexual abuse occurs evenly across all populations, rich or poor, and any race. At least one in four females is sexually assaulted before she reaches 18; and 30 percent of survivors of sexual assault never tell anyone. Camp Victory was founded to help heal young survivors of sexual abuse. “The way we go about this important work is unique,” said Katrina Price Stilwell,

Founder and President of the 501(c)(3) charitable organization called Camp Victory Texas, Inc. “Our focus is on creating a safe environment in the form of a three-day camp where survivors can play and sing, truly know that they are neither alone nor responsible for what happened to them, and develop self-affirming behavior with appropriate and effective social coping skills.” At Camp Victory, adults are known as “Big Buddies” and girls are “Little Buddies.” Adults who successfully complete the training (and a

thorough background security check) and participate in a camp are thereafter known as “Mama Lions.” “This year’s Camp is from May 2 through 4, and we are accepting applications for girls who will be between 7 and 16 years of age at that time,” explains Katrina. Applications can be found online at www. campvictorytexas.org. While camp is indeed free to the girls - it takes an army of volunteers and Mama Lions, not to mention financial support, to make camp a reality. “At Camp Victory, we

and believes strongly in giving back to the community. “Access to health care and quality of care can be a major challenge,” said Khojawa, who has created partnerships with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, MD Anderson Cancer Center and The Rose, a breast cancer non-profit.

New to Medicare! What do I do NOW? Dear Toni, “I will be turning 65 on September 2 and absolutely don’t know anything about Medicare, how to apply, when to apply where to apply? How to select to what and when? Which Medicare plan is good and which one is not? “I own a small business (Just me and my wife) I intend to keep working until my body allows. If you can show me direction and help me, I will really appreciate your help. Thanks‚ - Confused New 65 year old from Heights area

Dear New 65 Year Old: I am asked this question at least 10 times a week and this is what I tell a new client when they are trying to navigate the maze of Medicare. In my book the Medicare Survival Guide, it discusses the two main Medicare coverage choices; Original Medicare

and co pays in ‘Original Medicare’. You can purchase a Medicare Supplement policy from a private insurance company. Cost will vary by plan and company.

Parts A and B with a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage Plans. Page 59 of the 2014 Medicare and You handbook, also discusses your Medicare options. When it comes to Medicare, it is not a one size fits all type of policy. Take your time and search your options. Below are the steps to help you decide what option is right for you: Step #1: Decide if you want ‘Original Medicare’ with or without a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan. Talk to your doctor and see which plan he/she recommends. Many doctors are accepting ‘Original Medicare’ and not Medicare Advantage plans. A Medicare Supplement helps to fill the deductibles

Toni King

If you have a doctor that is in the Medicare Advantage plan’s provider directory, make sure you call to verify that he/

she is still accepting that particular Medicare Advantage plan. Sometimes providers are in the directory, but stopped accepting the plan long before it went to print. The main difference between ‘Original Medicare’ with a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans is that ‘Original Medicare’ works only with Medicare and generally, you or your supplemental coverage pay the deductibles or coinsurances. You will use your Medicare (Red, White and Blue) card. Medicare Advantage plan is also call Part C and is administered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. You must use that insurance company’s card, not your Medicare (Red, White and Blue) Card. There is an important disclaimer at the bottom of page 59 of the Medicare handbook

and it states: If you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you don’t need a Medicare supplement policy and if you already have a Medicare supplement, you can’t use it to pay the out of pocket or co pays for the Medicare Advantage plan. It also states that ‘if you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can’t be sold a Medicare supplement/Medigap policy.’ Step #2: Decide if you want Part D prescription drug coverage. (Remember there is a Part D penalty if you don’t enroll at the right time) If you want Medicare Prescription Drug coverage to go along with ‘Original Medicare’ then you must enroll in a Medicare Part D plan with a private insurance company that is approved by Medicare and generally there is a premium. If you choose a Medicare

Advantage plan, please make sure that the plan has Part D Medicare Prescription Drug coverage included. To enroll in Medicare contact Social Security at 1800-772-1213 or visit www. socialsecurity.gov at least 90 days before you turn 65 and enroll in both Part A (hospital) and Part B (Medical) of Medicare. Join Toni at The Leader Senior Expo on Wednesday, April 23 from 9:30AM-3:30PM at the SPJST Lodge 88 at 15th & Beall. Toni’s ‘Confused About Medicare’ workshops will be at 10 a.m. and also 1 p.m. Toni will also be available to answer your Medicare questions. Weather can cause joint pain Have you ever noticed that when the seasons start to change, you experience more joint pain or migraine headaches? Seasonal changes may impact pain because of changes in barometric pressure, humidity levels, temperature, and even precipitation levels. You may have heard someone with joint pain such as arthritis or fibromyalgia say, “There’s a storm coming! I can feel it in my joints.” Then sure enough, it rains or snows. Although there is no evidence that links the weather to symptoms of increased pain, many doctors and patients believe there is a direct correlation. So why does this happen? One of the main factors is a drop in barometric pressure, which often precedes a storm. The theory goes that See WEATHER, P. 4B

Free oral, head and neck cancer screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday April 26, at the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. More than 50,000 oral, head and neck cancer cases are diagnosed annually (American Cancer Society, 2009). These cancers are most often linked to tobacco use - 85% of patients have a history of

smoking; however, over the past decade, a growing number of young, non-smokers have developed oral cancer associated with the human-papillomavirus, or HPV. Today, 25 percent - 10,000 cases each year - might be attributable to a strain of HPV. April 20 - 26 is International Oral, Head, & Neck Cancer Awareness Week meant to

promote public awareness and the importance of early detection. In conjunction with awareness week, Memorial Hermann Northwest is holding a free screening at Memorial Hermann Northwest-Cancer Center, 1631 North Loop West, Suite 150. MHNW offers video of babies’ first moments Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital now offers new parents the personal, private opportunity to capture and preserve their baby’s first moments of life on video. With more than 25,000 births every year, Memorial Hermann Health System is the first in Houston to offer this free, electronic service. “We believe this service is a great way for parents to relax and focus on their new baby, and not on their cameras,” said Anne Stefan, director for The Family Birthing Center, Memorial Hermann Northwest. “Parents have already told us they are excited to have such an expert product to show friends and family; they wish they had something like this for their older children.” Courtesy of Memorial Hermann’s partner, Biovideo®, each family receives a fully customized video capturing the highlights of a newborn’s

arrival. Following strict guidelines with a clear understanding of the medical components, a professional team of digital photographers unobtrusively films precious moments and emotions documenting the mother’s first minutes with the baby and the baby’s introduction to the rest of the family. As soon as a mom knows she is pregnant, she can register online with Biovideo® and start uploading prenatal photographs such as sonograms to a personal, password-protected profile. Both the video and still photos can be accessed by mom or dad on a secure webpage and shared via email or social media. If parents are interested in purchasing a hard copy of the video or downloading it, they can do so for a nominal fee. The focus on flexibility, balance and coordination is good for anyone, but is especially important for older people who might be more prone to injury causing falls.

He stresses that Tai Chi is physical activity, but it’s a relaxing one. “People come to feel better,” he said. “We don’t exercise until we fall on the floor.” Cunningham said they are hoping to build a following with the new class. pring is a perfect time to consider a smile makeover! A great place to start is by whitening your teeth to bring out your brightest smile. There are many reasons for teeth to become discolored or less white than before. Eating or drinking dark foods such as chocolate, coffee, tea, and red wine (it’s always the good stuff that gets you!) can leave your teeth darker. Smoking or chewing tobacco can act similarly to leave unsightly staining. Age plays another role. As we get older, our teeth become more opaque and can begin to yellow. Fortunately, there are options to correct this. Whitening or bleaching your teeth is a safe and effective way to bring out the natural color of your smile. Teeth are basically made up of millions of crystalline straws which the bleaching agent penetrates and removes any stain deposits. This leaves only the teeth’s natural brightness, sometimes 8 shades lighter than pre-treatment. It is important that you have a dental exam prior to any whitening to ensure there are no areas of decay, and no gum disease present as this can lead to increased sensitivity if the teeth are not sound. Ask your dentist if custom in-office whitening would be a good option for you.

Weather, from P. 3B a decrease in the air pressure can cause the tissues around the joints to swell, causing arthritic pain. There have been tests done using a balloon in a barometric chamber as a simulator. If the pressure outside drops, the air in the balloon expands. If the same happened in the area around an arthritic joint, the expansion or swelling could irritate the nerves, causing pain. However, the swelling occurs on such a small scale that this cannot be medically measured and proven. Dr. Tamer Elbaz from Pain Physicians NY, offers some tips: 1. Get your move on! Many people who have arthritis or other forms of pain say that they experience more pain in the winter. This could be attributed to the fact that they aren’t able to get outside and exercise. Join a gym, or make an indoor exercise plan to reduce the amount of joint pain in the winter and throughout the rest of the year. Low-impact exercises can truly make a difference: try biking, light weight lifting, water aerobics, or even walking. Anything to get your move on for at least 30 minutes a day. 2. Pay attention to what you eat

Our food intake plays an important role. Eat foods that are rich in: Omega-3 fatty acids. Think salmon and nuts which curb inflammation. Vitamin K. Think Green! Foods like spinach, kale, cabbage, broccoli, herbs and other foods can soothe pain. Fun Fact: Did you know that Chili Powder, Curry, Paprika, and Cayenne also have Vitamin K? Vitamin C. Add to your diet juicy oranges, sweet red peppers and tomatoes, kiwis, and other Vitamin C-rich foods to stop cartilage loss (and the joint pain that occurs as a result). SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Waltrip Baseball inches closer to playoff bid By Michael Sudhalter michael@theleadernews.com

Last season, the Waltrip High baseball team finished second in Class 4A-District 21 with a senior-led squad. The Rams were competitive in the opening round of the playoffs before losing to Fort Bend Ridge Point in the first round of the Class 4A postseason.

Stewart enjoyed his second win of the season, while Hardy tallied her fifth straight win. Another St. Pius X golfer, Lacey Hardy, shot her best score of the year to earn alldistrict honors. The Panther golf team will compete in regionals on Monday and Tuesday. That tournament will be held at Gleannloch Pines as well.

Now, a Rams roster full of sophomores is closing in on a playoff spot. “We’ve absolutely progressed physically and mentally, which is huge,” Waltrip head baseball coach Mike Evans said. The Rams (10-9, 8-3), however, must face three teams – Milby, Reagan and North Forest – who defeated them earlier in the season. Evans said sophomore Nick Hollas is the team’s No. 1 pitcher and sophomore catcher Nick Contreras is the team’s top hitter. Waltrip girls tennis wins district

The Waltrip High girls tennis team won the 4A-21 district championship on Tuesday at Memorial Park. Jocelyn Escoto took first place in singles, and the mixed doubles team of Theresa Perez and Kevin Smith was first. Sydney Novak and Karla Perez placed third in girls doubles. The Lady Rams will compete on the tournament on Monday in Willis. “I’m very happy with the results because my students worked hard,” Waltrip girls tennis coach Josephina Pacaon said. Pius golfers prepare for regionals

St. Pius X sophomores Kade Stewart and Rachel Hardy each won individual titles at the TAPPS District 3-5A Championship at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club in Spring, Texas, on Monday, March 31. Stewart shot a 1-under-par 70 and Hardy posted an 80.

Washington to sign with Grandview

Waltrip High senior basketball player Nathan Washington has been selected to play in the Houston Area Basketball Coaches Association (HABCA) All-Star Game on May 8. A three-year starter for the Rams, Washington will sign next month to play basketball at Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa. Washington is the fourth WHS player selected to play in the HABCA All-Star Game, following his older brother, Milton, who plays basketball for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Denzel Livingston (Incarnate Word) and Anthony Bolton (Oklahoma School of Science & Arts). Looking to repeat Freshmen help lead Reagan Softball By Michael Sudhalter

michael@theleadernews.com

The Reagan High softball team will look to win its second straight Class 4A-District 21 Championship. But the Lady Bulldogs will face some tough competition en route to a repeat. Reagan (12-1, 10-1) will face Milby in a doubleheader on Friday and then face archrival Waltrip, the only team it lost to this season, on April 21. “We’re playing better offensively and defensively,” Reagan head softball coach Daniel Perez said. The Lady Bulldogs graduated All-District standout Victoria Herrera, who’s now pitching at Austin College in Sherman. Herrera led Reagan to its first district title in eight years and its first softball win over Waltrip in 16 years. RHS went on to sweep Waltrip. Reagan has adapted on the mound with freshman Alissa Vasquez progressing throughout the season. On Tuesday,

she pitched a shutout in a 110, five inning win over Austin. Mahoney Espernanza, another freshman, is the team’s leadoff hitter. Regardless of how the Lady Bulldogs fare in the champion-

ship chase, they’ll have a difficult task on their hands next season. Reagan will move up to Class 6A where they’ll face the likes of Bellaire and Lamar in district competition.

Perez said a district title this season would go a long way in building momentum for next spring.

Looking for a summer project for your family that will make a difference? Here is a wonderful idea for you! About four years ago, Monica Guy was thinking about a project for her family to tackle over the summer and happened to be shopping in Kroger on W. 43rd St. Throughout her shopping trip that day, she continually heard announcements over the store’s PA system regarding anysoldier.com. Back at home, Monica checked out the website and showed it to her husband Doug, sons Gavin Guy and Courtland Jones, and daughter Alyssa Jones. They began sending care packages pursuant to directions on the website and while they did not receive a response from soldiers, that wasn’t the point. They were just glad to be contributing. A couple of soldiers did eventually email or message the family on Facebook a couple of times, so they knew their packages were getting through - and that was good to know. Monica says, “I just don’t want you to think getting a response happens all the

time, it doesn’t. They (the soldiers) are busy staying alive.” Monica continued to send care packages, utilizing coupons at the grocery store to make the packages more affordable. When summer 2013 began, Monica and her daughter, Alyssa, decided to send care packages once again. Having been in the JROTC at Scarborough High School, Alyssa was eager to adopt a female Army unit and the ladies eventually adopted one large group and one small group from Texas. The two created a very festive Fourth of July package and made sure it would get there in time for the holiday. One of the soldiers in the unit, Crystal Hernandez from Dilley, Texas, received a portion of what was in the package and sent Monica an email. The two continued to email, Monica and Alyssa sent more care packages directly to Crystal, and they became Friends on Facebook. Crystal is home in Texas now and very much wanted to meet the Guy/Jones family. She came to Houston on Mar. 18, her birthday, and thanked Monica and Alyssa in person for the care packages. Monica flew into action once she knew Crystal was

The cheering squad consists of Edna Hultin and Freddy Herrera, head cheerleaders; Donna Phares, Jack Dillon, Lynne Booker and Robert Eschenfelder. 25 years ago April 13, 1989 Heights Association plans banquet, hosts McIngvale The Houston Heights Association’s 16th annual banquet will be at 7 p.m. April 18, in the SPJST Hall, 15th and Beall. The banquet has a Caribbean theme, “Tropical Paradise in the Heights,” and features Jim “Mac” McIngvale as guest speaker. During the banquet the association acknowledges its Citizen of the Year and other volunteers who have worked on behalf of the association. In addition to door prizes, raffle tickets also will be sold separately for a trip for two to Belize. The trip package includes air fare and hotel accommodations. The Heights Association maintains Marmion Park at 18th Street and Heights Boulevard and Donovan Park at 7th Street and Heights Boulevard. coming and a grand welcome was created for her including a giant banner which was displayed at Kroger and signed by multitudes of neighbors from our community. Monica maintains that whenever she had an idea, her neighbors helped her make it happen. They signed the banner to show their sincere support for our troops, they donated samples of perfume (for Hawaiian-themed care packages with leis), candy (Halloween care packages complete with a scary spider), and anything else Monica requested. When one of the neighbors discovered Kroger was the catalyst for the entire project, she spoke to Mr. Bailey, manager at Kroger, and he allowed Monica to display the banner there in the lobby to be filled with signatures and well wishes. The Kroger managers decided to present Crystal with flowers and a birthday cake and Monica made sure to bring her by the store. Monica is grateful for their involvement and said, “I never would have imagined that the announcement I heard on that day in Kroger would lead to a moment like this. The impact is greater than words. my heart for Kroger, AnySoldier, and my neighbors in Oak Forest. I want them to know how thankful I am for allowing me to make this new friendship, and helping me make her visit special.” Having never been to Houston, Crystal was interested in a little sightseeing so Monica took her to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo exhibits and the carnival. Crystal enjoyed seeing the skyscrapers in Houston and was especially thrilled to see the Astrodome. In fact, Crystal’s very first email to the Guy/Jones family thanked them for the Charmin toilet paper they had included in that care package and asked about the Astrodome. The family hopes that Crystal now knows there is a huge amount of support for our soldiers in Houston and if she is deployed again, she can take this experience with her and remind her fellow soldiers how much America’s neighbors care about them. Crystal is now stationed at Fort Hood and plans to return to Houston for a visit soon. Anysoldier.com is run on donations only. The founder is Marty Horn.
