Senior living - new Heights By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Everything we see in this world today is the fruits of someone’s labor--someone who came before us and made a way. Seeing as today’s elderly generation were a part of the fabric of this city, it only seems right to pay them back in any small manner, and 223 residents of a local senior living community now have a facility best-suited for their needs. On Thursday, March 23, Mayor Sylvester Turner joined the Heights community as the Houston Heights Tower celebrated completion of a $12 million facelift and renovation two years in the making in the heart of the Heights at 330 W. 19th Street. “Forty years went by, and the building needed work,” said Tom Forrester Lord, president of the Housing Corporation of Greater Houston, of the midrise built in 1975. “We were seeing pipes leak and the roof leak, and we didn’t really have the money we needed if we wanted to fix it up and continue serving seniors for another 40 years.” Enter the folks with the city of Houston. When Lord first

approached the Housing Department, he simply requested $2 million to fix the plumbing—but the follow-up made his jaw drop. “The head of the department said ‘why don’t you just fix it all?’” he said. The offer was one he wasted no time in accepting. Hence, the city dug into its pockets and funded $10 million of the $12 million cost, with Community Bank chipping in the final $2 million to help keep the vision of four area
churches (Heights Presbyterian, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, Heights Christian Church and All Saints Catholic) alive and well. “Everything you see here is brand new, so it will all be around here to serve the community for at least another 40 years,” Lord said. Refurbishment on the venue included installing all-new plumbing, transforming the former cafeteria into a 2,000square-foot community room for activities, resurfacing and

painting the exterior, adding four feet of insulation and a computer room, and giving all apartments an interior facelift. While the $10 million required of the city is no small chunk of change, Mayor Sylvester Turner believes the cost to be well worth the investment. “In building complete communities in Houston, we must consider the needs of our older adults and we must support development which provides for those in need, and that is why we support the Housing Corporation of Greater Houston and the Houston Heights Tower,” he said. “It sounds like a lot of money, and it is, but it is an investment in our seniors, those who have paved the way and those who have made it possible to be where we are today.”

Not too far or close—just right As residents of the independent living facility have come and gone, Lord said one thing has remained the same through all its days, and remains a vital part of the facility’s service to the community’s older population.

New ideas for old Chase location By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
Contributed Photo Beer, wings and giant pretzels aren’t the only things offered at BierHaus - there’s also live music and an adult playground.
King’s BierHaus to bring their best By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Neighborhood reaction to the opening of King’s BierHaus this month at 2044 E. T.C. Jester has been very enthusiastic, which is just what Philipp Sitter hoped for when he and his father Hans chose the location. The Austrian father and son already operate King’s Biergarten in Pearland. “We believed that specific community would embrace our concept and brand with open arms,” said Sitter. “It just felt like King’s belonged there.” The Sitters are finishing up ambitious renovations to the site. The 9,000 squarefoot outdoor beer garden will feature a small river cutting through the middle. There are seven dining spaces, including a full-service inside bar, small tables and booths inside, indoor communal tables with TVs, outdoor bar dining, additional private outdoor dining with personal awnings, the outdoor communal Biergarten dining, and what is described in press materials as the “adult playground.” “Our landlord, Neil Martin from Ancorian, really gave us free reign to design the building and garden like an Austrian Ski Haus and Biergarten mashup,” said Sitter. “It’s super difficult to find a landlord that shares your visions and supports it.” The access to parking was also key to Sitter. “We have access to over
800 parking lots so we can have large festivals like Oktoberfest, Beerfest, and our Christmas Market with ease of access to the entire community,” he said. Sitter also understands that he’s moving into an area with a lot of families and says that the BierHaus will be a restaurant venue more than a bar venue. “We have a kids menu, outdoor seating, and dogfriendly patio,” he said. “Just the atmosphere will naturally contribute to [a family friendly vibe]. Late night, after 10 p.m., will be a different story, but overall it will be a place for all to enjoy.” He said they are calling the playground an adult one because they thought it was the best way to describe it. The playground features bar games like corn hole, pingpong, and a giant Jenga. Long-time residents might remember the spot as the location of Pecos Grill which was there for a number of years. Those who have been here even longer say it was an establishment called Texas Tumbleweed. “I remember watching a western shootout in the middle of dinner in grade school at Tumbleweed and two-stepping at Pecos,” said Lisa Buss. The newest incarnation of the space will be open Monday through Wednesday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Thursdays 11 a.m.-midnight, Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-1 a.m. and Sundays 11 a.m.- 9 p.m.
When the Chase Bank vacated the spot in front of the Oak Forest library in December, the speculation began as to what would take its place. Now Edge Realty Partners has a sign out in front of the library and is taking offers. On Edge’s website, the bank is listed as available for lease. However, Edge’s Culver Stedman said that the owner would consider a sale for the right price. The price for lease is under wraps, except for serious inquiry. Edge associate Travis Waltmon said that the building’s owner recently purchased it from Chase, although HCAD still lists the bank as owner. The space is being marketed for office, retail or medical use, but Walton said the use is unrestricted. “It’s a freestanding building,” he said. “It could be used for just about anything if someone can make it work.” It is across the street from Oak Forest Elementary so it would seem beer and wine sales would be prohibited. Leader readers Carolina Chavez and Laura Tilley said that they hoped the building might become an expansion of the library. “They could offer more interactive things for kids to do, like a Lego center,” said Tilley. The marketing flyer lists the building at 3,603 square feet and the land at 19,325 square feet. There are 16 parking spaces. The total population within five miles is 378,559 and the average household income is $83,523. There is no shortage of reader ideas of what someone might do with the property. A coffee shop, a small boutique or gift shop, a kid friendly spot like a Mad Potter and a community center all got votes. Lucy Cain wants an Oak Forest Cafe that serves an old fashioned breakfast. “I wish we could do a co-op cafe for the neighborhood,” she said. “Other cities have been successful, I think it could work in ours too.” “I think it would be great to have an afterschool place for kids from Black Middle School to walk to,” said Jason Holcombe. “One of my dreams is a place

where elderly could hang out during the day and children and pets could visit so that children have some exposure to the amazing patience and life experience of mature folks and so that elderly can enjoy the bursts of life giving laughter and joy that come from spending time with young children,” said Elizabeth Villarreal.

Seniors from P. 1B “It’s the perfect place for seniors, he said, noting the proximity and convenience of just about any community amenity. “They can walk to the grocery store, drug store, doctors and more. It’s just a great place to be if you’re a senior. We’re important to this neighborhood. For evidence, look no further than Frances Smerinksy, 87, who has resided inside Houston Heights Tower since 1999. Upon moving into the eight-story tower, Smerinsky even sold her car, saying she wouldn’t need it — and hasn’t missed a beat. “I don’t need a car here. I’m close to everything, she said. “A grocery store, cleaners, bank and doctor are either within walking distance or I take a bus. Addressing a growing need Overall, America is aging. All baby boomers will be 65 by 2029, and will make up 20 per-
cent of Harris county’s population by that time. Nearly 655,000 residents age 60 and older live in Harris County according to Turner, and as this number grows, many will unfortunately be at the lowest income level. As such, Turner said how the community responds – through gestures such as the Heights Tower renovation – will determine its legacy. “How we treat those in the older days of their lives will determine what type of city we will be. Our goal is to not only improve the quality of life for these residents, we also want to continue the growth and revitalization that have taken place in this community, he said. “This demonstrates Houston’s commitment to provide quality, affordable homes in neighborhoods throughout our city, and it’s important we protect the homes and housing options for our older adults and those with

Heights High art car ready to ride once again By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As clouds rolled over a gloomy Thursday afternoon, Rebecca Bass gazed proudly out over her students’ nearlycompleted art car and couldn’t help but be filled with pride and joy at the strides that have been taken over the last few months—on both the project and in her students’ lives. Her Heights High School students may be fashioning ‘just a car’ for Houston’s annual Art Car Parade April 8 on the surface, but for Bass and her crew the meaning runs much deeper. “I saw what a fantastic group project it is, how they get to meet adults and be in an adult world,” said the retired HISD educator who now serves as the art car specialist and first glimpsed the idea during her HISD tenure. “They get to meet artists from all over the world, they get to feel important, and they get to
work through problem-solving opportunities together.” Music has been a common theme for Bass and her students over the years, from Lizard King and Atomic Dog to Bohemian Rhapsody and Electric Ladyland. For the 2017 edition, the group has conjured up a tribute to Prince, entitled ‘Purple Reign.’ From brainstorming the idea to execution of the bespectacled gas cap and the top of Prince’s head on his motorcycle, the annual project (entered yearly into the city’s art car show) is completely student-driven and Bass was quick to shift the focus to the students themselves. “I guide them, but it’s not my ideas,” she said. “They come up with all this crazy stuff themselves.” None of the students putting the finishing touches on the car last week appeared to be similar in their tale of coming to work on the project— but all of them have since
discovered a passion for one aspect or another. Take Noelle Riall, who heard about it through the grapevine from a family friend. From the moment she got involved, Ri-
all was unexpectedly hooked, and she stood there last week a third-year art car veteran. “I got out here, and it just ended up being an everyday thing—I was here until 6 or 7
graduation, as he worked on his fourth art car creation. “Starting off, I was a bit awkward and I didn’t do much. See Art Car P. 7B

Quick learning lands LHN senior first college offer
Accepting Applications
By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Atanasio Simba was unaware of the game of football as a youth growing up in wartorn Angola, but he learned the game when he came to the U.S., and now the Lutheran High North senior has just picked up his first offer from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. “Four years ago, I did not know what football was, Simba said. “It means a lot (to receive the offer) because I just fell in love with the game, and I love the ups, the downs and everything with it. Simba came to Houston following his eighth grade year after his father decided that he and his siblings should pursue their eldest brother’s path since he was doing well for himself in America. The younger Simba spent his first six months in the city in a crash course learning English, and after completing the program, he enrolled at LHN. He stepped foot on campus as a scrawny and reserved kid, but that didn’t stop head football coach Nathan Robbins from approaching him to ask if he’d like to play football. “At first, I didn’t want to play football because I didn’t know what it was, he said in the Sept. 3, 2016 issue of The Leader. “I tried. I didn’t like it at first, but through practice, I started to get better. He struggled mightily in the gym and on the field in his first season, which resulted in him being limited to a reserve role. During that time, he weighed a mere 119 pounds and could barely bench-press his own weight. At the start of the offseason and throughout the past three years, Simba spent the bulk of his time in the gym and doing speed workouts on the track. The Houston transplant
Photo supplied LHN’s Atanasio Simba and coach Creighton Runnels celebrate following a victory over Bay Area Christian. The senior recently received his first college offer from Concordia University.
now weighs 153 pounds, and recently at the Greater Houston Senior Showcase, he benched 195 pounds a total of eight times and ran an astonishing 4.45 second 40-yard dash time. His showing at the event is where Concordia became officially sold on the running back, despite the university showing interest in him dating back to football season. “I was really excited because a lot of colleges have talked and continue talking to me, but Concordia was the first to take a step forward and give me an offer, he said. Although he has not committed to playing at the school, the offer could not have come at a better time because Simba said that he started to lose hope in immediately playing at the next level considering it had been several months since the end of football season, and yet, he hadn’t received a proposal. Simba has also communicated with Sterling College in Kansas, Lakeland University and Beloit College, which are both in Wisconsin and Texas
College in Tyler. While he hasn’t been asked to play for any of these schools, he said he has continued to be in contact with them and hopes that he’ll be extended additional deals. Regardless of where he ends up, it seems likely that the LHN senior will have a place in college football after the hard work that he has put in to get to this point. “It is crazy and exciting because I look back to my freshman highlights, and I had no idea what I was doing, and now I had people coming up to me after games shaking my hand, telling me I had a great game and that they loved watching me play, he said. “It’s just an amazing feeling and I just am blessed to have the great coaches I had.

BONDED & INSURED HANDYMAN SERVICE
Art Car from P. 3B When someone asked me to do it, I said ‘Yes’ on a whim, and from there it grew into a part of my life that I can’t ever get rid of,” he said of his initial foray into the art car world. For rookie Julian Meraz, when Riall (his friend) mentioned the need for help with the car, he saw in the offer an opportunity to unleash a passion which has always driven him. “I was interested in the designing process and everything they did with it. So, I started coming every day and just fell in love with it,” he said. “I really like designing the car, because it takes commitment and skill to do it. I can really let my creativity out with everything.” While the three may have rarely crossed paths before the new year, the common thread now is the lasting relationships and the time spent in the service yard that has brought them and others together for a common purpose. “It was the one constant, steady thing I had going on in my life,” Riall said. “It was the one thing I could come to where I knew what was going on, what had to be done and was enjoyable.” Worth the time Creating the masterpiece is no small undertaking, as the semester-long project requires students to take time after school each day, and even give up precious hours of their spring break, to complete it. So, what makes it worth giving up watching the NCAA Tournament, hanging out on the beach or simply winding down from the school grind? “Afterwards, you see people taking pictures of it and posing with it, and it’s a nice feeling to see something we all made come together and be a huge work of art,” Flores said. “Getting to see the finished product was a really satisfying feeling,” Riall added. “The most enjoyable part is being at the parade and people saying ‘y’all did this? Kids did this?’ and seeing people take pictures with the car while being completely blown away by it. It’s great to see something I helped with astonish people.”
More than a project Beyond the task of simply creating the masterpiece, Bass strives to teach her crew lessons throughout the process which will touch their lives long after they leave the Heights High School walls. “These (communication, collaboration, handling criticism, independence) are skills they have to learn—they may go off and never build another art car again, but they go off in the business world or their personal lives and they’ve learned skills and they’ve felt important,” she said. “We do so much for them that we don’t let them make their own decisions and mistakes. They feel like adults when they get finished with this—they have accomplished something from beginning to end.” Such efforts have already crept into Riall’s life, as she said the necessity of communication has helped her overcome social anxiety. “When I started out here, I really didn’t like talking to people. Now it’s super easy to talk and hold conversations and tell people about what I’m doing,” she said of the experience. “You have to be able to collaborate with everyone else, because it can’t look like 12 different people, it has to look like one person did it. You have to be able to talk to people about what you’re doing and what’s going on.” For Flores, his experience highlighted the importance of grabbing the bull by the horns, which can translate to various situations. “It showed me you can’t just expect somebody to do something for you—if you want something to happen, you’ve got to make it happen,” he said. “When you first start out, it’s hard to wrap your mind around, but it inspires work ethic in a lot of the kids who work on it.” Heights High School’s ‘Purple Reign’ will join around 250 bikes, cars, skaters and motorized creatures April 8 for one of the largest art gatherings of its kind in the world. The parade will get started at 2 p.m., but residents are encouraged to get there early and grab their spot for the spectacle.
