Liberty Kitchen Garden Oaks serves up winning tacos
Upon walking into the restaurant, your visual senses are immediately stimulated with the beautifully decorated restaurant, bar and sun room for dining seating. I started my brunch with a Liberty Mimosa recommendation from the waiter – pineapple infused vodka, champagne and a black berry floater. I kept my starter simple so I could enjoy my brunch entrée and placed an order for the bacon jam eggs - two deviled eggs topped with their signature bacon jam. If you’re a bacon lover, these are a must. I spent a few minutes with the brunch menu weighing out my options. I was stuck on the fence with my order, debating between the half Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, the also appealing Real Cowboy Surfers-Style Chicken and Donut Bowl, or the taco plate. Eventually, I came to a final decision on the Lutheran High North Lions Game Day Taco Plate (2) – meat, cheese, egg, taco sauce, pico

Amongst the tall trees and bucolic natural elements that surround the Garden Oaks neighborhood, is a new creature that has called the neighborhood its home – construction. Although construction is not a new creature to the neighborhood, or the city, it is a new challenge that many businesses are facing and one that has had an effect on the restaurant Liberty Kitchen Garden Oaks. On my drive over to LKGO, I drove in from the Heights coming down North Shepherd and turning into the neighborhood from 38th Street. Eventually, the construction path sat directly on my destined route, and even though there were re-routing signs to guide me to the restaurant, I contemplated avoiding the construction all-together and dining elsewhere. That very thought process steered me to find the re-route to LKGO parking, with lingering thoughts of how neighbors or potential diners might skip over the restaurant due to the construction annoyances.

Dishes rated ‘Eggcelent’ on brunch dining scope Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
A staple in the brunch department, eggs are both delicious and nutritious. But it’s the delicious part that probably holds sway when most people are looking at a menu on a leisurely morning. The Leader asked readers about some of their favorite dishes and then went out to sample them. Most Egg-cellent! Runner’s Bowl - Cedar Creek Café, 1034 W. 20th St. Reader Brenda Spurlin said she had brunch a few months ago at Cedar Creek and ordered their Runner’s Bowl ($11). “It is two poached eggs over quinoa,” she said. “I fell in love. I make it for dinner about every other week.” In addition, the dish contains a little fruit, broccoli, asparagus and avocado as well as some sausage. Spurlin says that she jazzes up the quinoa with more veggies and nuts when she makes it. Try it yourself or head over to the Creek.
Cedar Creek manager Cory Pitts says it is one of their top three sellers. “It’s a healthy option,” he said. “And the quinoa, sausage and egg marinate very well together.” Verdict: If you are a quinoa person you have to try this.
Crab and Spinach Omelet at Union Kitchen, 3452 Ella Blvd Several readers mentioned dishes at Union Kitchen, but Alexis Eaton singled out the Crab and Spinach Omelet ($14.95). Eaton is not alone in her opinion. This omelet was one of the first brunch items on The Union Kitchen menu and has consistently been one of its most popular dishes. Paul Miller, owner of Gr8 Plate Hospitality, was in California on vacation and went to a seafood restaurant with a similar dish. He loved it and decided to add it to the menu at The Union Kitchen. Verdict: I felt both healthy and a little bit decadent with this dish.
The Farmstand Farmer’s Market in Garden Oaks, Wakefield near Crowbar For sheer value, you can’t get a better deal in the area. Last Saturday I had two breakfast tacos on corn tortillas and an orange juice for three bucks. Yes, three dollars. It’s $2 for an order of one flour or two corn tortillas. Mickey Morales’ egg-pertise is not a secret as many people mentioned his creations as a weekend meal staple. He’s been at it since the stand opened four years ago. Morales thinks the popularity of his tacos and omelets is due to the good ingredients. He gets his eggs from Cathy Sullivan of Happy Heart Farms. Since Sullivan’s eggs are generally in shorter supply October through January, Morales also has a few other sources that he trusts. Garnishes include cheese, fresh cilantro and a salsa he says he’s been making for his own family for 20 years. Verdict: Did I mention my whole delicious breakfast was three bucks?

Stalking the best brunch bread By Kim Hogstrom For The Leader
When The Leader’s Food Editor Christina Martinez asked us to study brunch offerings in the area and select the best breads served with them, my mind went straight to toast. Toast is so, well, ordinary. I should have had more faith in the community’s creativity because the selection of items made with grain, yeast or batter available is breathtaking. During brunch at Onion Creek Cafe, we went for the home-made buttermilk biscuits and the sausage gravy that comes with them. After dousing the warm, flaky, golden medallions in just the right amount of thick, gloppy, heartclogging gravy - we swooned. Who cares that Onion Creek has no creek when the brunch biscuits are this good? Another fun choice for brunch is Beaver’s on Decatur Street in the Heights. Some of the recipes are the creation of owner Chef Monica Pope, and none disappoint. The menu is chocked full of unique flavors. On our brunch bread hunting visit to Beaver’s, we opted for an order of slowdough pretzels. If we were anywhere else, that might have been risky, but our faith in Pope payed off. Two, large, warm artisanal pretzels appeared, with two house-made dipping choices: a 1836 beer sauce, and a peach bourbon mustard sauce. The pretzels had just the right amount of salt, and a hint of crunch on the outside, a nice compliment to the pillowy dough in the middle. Both dipping sauces were memorable, but as pretzel purists, we went for the peach bourbon mus-
tard. The golden goo was full of spicy mustard seeds with the peach adding an interesting undertone. The best part? These bunch treats are not limited to brunch. They also appear on the regular menu. If your dreams of the perfect brunch bread lean toward sweet stuff, we have a musttry that will satisfy. Located on N. Shepherd St. at 19th Street, Hugs & Donuts is worth a stop for a one-of-kind, worth-every-bite, sugar coma. The little spot offers a small number of tables painted like donuts for dining, and an enormous selection of the most original yeast donuts, cake donuts, fritters, and kolaches anywhere. Try one of the donuts
crammed with house-made fillings such as Boston cream pie, or fluffer nutter. For adventure, there’s a green tea coconut donut or a tres leches, and for a sweet-savory choice, there’s the maple bacon. Yummmmy with four “m”s. The kolaches here are equally interesting and tempting. There’s a sausage and pepperjack kolache, a BBQ brisket and cheddar kolache, a spinach and artichoke, and our favorite, a fig and brie topped with arugula and almonds, among others. If you can’t wait for brunch to try one of these, you’re in luck. Hugs & Donuts serves its sweet-savory treasures seven days a week.

Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park next weekend Next weekend, March 24 - 26, one of the best art festivals in the country will be taking place around the corner from our quaint neighborhoods. Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, features 300 fine artists from all over the country, great local food, music and even some children’s activities. The festival is often a topic of conversation in my circles of friends, both because it’s difficult to get into and its
City Art Festival (BCAF). I asked the artists that attend my show, what it means to them to be accepted into a show like BCAF. Adriane R. Wiltse is a jewelry designer that joined my show last spring. “As an engineer, it is easy to find validity and value in one’s work,” Wiltse said. “Yet as an artist, it takes courage and perseverance to put your heart and soul, I mean my work, out for judge, jury and

validation of having “made it” in the art world. Little is known about the reasons behind why one artist gets in, another doesn’t, and rumors fly. Having had the opportunity to be a juror, I can safely say that there is no mystery behind getting in - it’s competition and it is fierce. Jurors look at thousands of photos of artwork and have many things to consider in a very short period of time. That includes if they like the work, if they believe it’s a good fit for the show, if the work has a consistent flow, and does the booth photo convey the level of professionalism expected? There are often over a thousand applicants for just one show and the jury has to look at every single photo submission, which is five to seven photos each. To you, that means you know there will be amazing art at the show. For the artists who get accepted, it’s a professional validation of their hard work honing their skills, tweaking their booths and developing a style that is consistent with a top rated festival like Bayou

I’ve been producing my First Saturday Arts Market for thirteen years and I have often said I strive to be a mini version of the big juried festivals. So it’s with great honor to announce that I was invited this year and accepted a role as a member of the board of directors of the Art Colony Association, the organization that produces the Bayou City Art Festival. Brewed in the Heart of the Heights
It’s the madness of March and it’s time for a new Craft Chronicles! This month we visited Town in City Brewing Company located near what I fondly call “that wacky 5way intersection” of Cavalcade, Main and whatever the other three streets are. We arrived on a thirsty Thursday evening when Bingo was in full swing and the food truck was

Arthur Ave Italian makes way for Helen in the Heights

The owner of Arthur Ave Italian American restaurant in the Heights, 1111 Studewood, have announced the closing of the restaurant. The team behind Helen Greek Food and Wine in Rice Village launched Arthur Ave in early August 2016, but said that despite early good reviews and business “a consistent pattern of under performing sales over the last few months has indicated that the team’s passion for the Italian concept ultimately did not translate to its Studewood location.” The good news is that Chef William Wright, sommelier Evan Turner, Chef de Cuisine Mercedes Gomez, and Director of Operations Tim Faiola plan to open a Greek venture in its place — called Helen in the Heights. Described as “an ode to the classic style and dishes of a traditional Greek tavern,” Helen in the Heights will feature iconic dishes as opposed to the regional dishes served up in Rice Village. Arthur’s last dinner service will be on Sunday, March 19 and then the restaurant will close to implement the new concept at 1111 Studewood. Arthur Ave’s bar director, Josh Bearden, said the restaurant doesn’t plan to be closed long for the change over. Bearden said they anticipate a two week closing to paint the existing brick a bright white, re-do some interior design, but ultimately work with the space that they have on-hand. When it comes to the bar program at Arthur Ave,

to the neighborhood, and look forward to their new concept, Rexer said. “How wonderful to have great Greek food on our side of town. I’m interested to see how the wine menu will change and what additions will come.” Rexer is no novice when it comes to wine, and was pleased to find a few gems on the Arthur Ave wine menu during their current half off sale, happening now through their final dinner service on Sunday. More details for the new location will be made available in the coming weeks.
All visitors will receive a free 300-page book--

Bearden said we will see subtle changes and they will be implementing a few things that Helen Greek Food and Wine offers - like having an array of options of wine by the glass. Additionally, he’s hoping to cater his menu to include food and drink pairings. Arthur Ave diner and Oak Forest resident Jennie Rexer said she’s sad to see the restaurant go, but happy to see the company jump start in a new direction. “I’m pleased the Helen restaurant group will continue to bring great food and service

The St. Pius X boys’ soccer team became the TAPPS Division I state runner-ups for the first time in program history following an impressive playoff run in Coach Nick Merricks’ third year at the helm. The Panthers entered the year after coming off of a subpar 2015-2016 campaign that saw them finish 5-7-4 overall, as they lost four of their last five games, including their first round postseason exit. SPX began the new season much like they finished the previous one, losing seven of their first eight and getting shut out in five of the losses. Before entering district play, though, SPX followed up their sluggish start to the season by winning their next four and turning the tables by shutting out three of their opponents to close out exhibition play. They started district play against their crosstown rival St. Thomas Catholic High School. The Eagles upstaged SPX 2-1 after a hard fought battle on the Panthers’ turf. They were able to bounce back in their following matchup, which was a high-scoring shootout versus the Saint John XXIII College Preparatory Lions. St. Pius X would go on to split the season series with the
Lions after falling 3-2 to them three weeks later in Katy. The Panthers’ next game was another close call, as they fell to eventual district champion Awty International. They were once again able to rebound following the loss to Awty by winning their next two in similar 2-1 fashion against Village High School and Monsignor Kelly, which put them at 3-2 in district play. Another loss to Awty in the ensuing game sandwiched the two wins. This time they lost to the Rams by a 7-2 margin, dropping them to .500 in the league and 8-10 on the year. The resilient Panthers won two of their next three, with both wins coming against Concordia Lutheran, giving them the tiebreaker over the Crusaders should they have needed it to earn the final playoff spot. Village High handed SPX their next defeat in the same 2-1 way that the Panthers beat the Vikings in the teams’ previous encounter. Three days later, they headed south on Shepherd Street to take on St. Thomas in their second meeting of the season. The Eagles were able to sweep the season series over the Panthers, this time grabbing the victory in a 3-0 shutout. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a much-
needed win over Monsignor Kelly, which did two things: put SPX back at .500 in district and gave them a one-game lead over Kelly. SPX entered the postseason slated to play the Brownsville St. Joseph Academy Bloodhounds, who were favored as the home team with the better record. The Panthers stunned St. Joseph on their home field with a 3-2 victory to set up a second round meeting with arch-nemesis St. Thomas. The Panthers would not be denied for a third time after losing the regular season series to the Eagles and walked off the neutral field with a narrow 2-1 win, sending them to the state semifinal. For the third straight game, SPX started the game as underdogs as they lined up across Antonian Preparatory Academy, the no. 197 ranked team in the state. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and headed to extra minutes where junior Nic Medina scored the game-winning goal to give the Panthers their first state championship game berth. In the title game, the odds were stacked heavily against the Cinderella team from Houston as they took the field versus the 11th-ranked team in Texas in San Antonio’s Central Catholic, who also happen
to be no. 63 in the country. Despite the momentum that the SPX was able to build up over the course of their improbable playoff run, the Buttons appeared to be too much for them as Central Catholic berated and overwhelmed the Panther defense. The Buttons scored five consecutive goals before the half, including four in a 14-minute span. Early in the second half, Central Catholic added one more goal to seal the game, although the Panthers would not go down without a fight. With a minute remaining in regulation, the Panthers would score to avoid the shutout. While a loss in the state title game is likely to sting, the Panthers should feel a huge sense of pride for never giving up and overcoming great odds to make it there in the first place.

Around the World at Hogg Middle School Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
The artists at Hogg Middle School are at it again. In 2016, students created a mural on the side of the former Heights Post Office at 11th Street. Now a group of seventh and eighth graders are enlivening the walls of their own school. Principal Angela Sugarek said that the seeds of the new Around the World - Global Architecture mural started with Hogg student Tremayne Edwards, who is in Hogg’s Skills for Learning and Living program. “Tremayne has a near photographic memory and can draw just about anything he sees, said Sugarek. “He
saw images from Paris in a movie and started reproducing them in art class with Ms. Ozanic. She liked the style of his drawing and shared it with her Art 1 class. Art teacher Kati Ozanic’s students decided to use a similar style for their mural. “I think the source of this mural is important because it demonstrates the power of inclusion in our schools, said Sugarek. Since October, Ozanic and her students have been hard at work. First they brainstormed the iconic architecture that they wanted to include. Then they had to grid it out and sketch the pieces in pencil before they started painting. The result is an appropri-

ate embellishment to the halls of an International Baccalaureate middle school. The Taj Mahal, Stonehenge, the Colosseum, and the Par-
thenon are just a few of the structures that made the mural. It was a work of moving pieces and adjustments right up to the finish line. Student
Ylana Santos said that one important Texas building was supposed to be on the mural and then they realized it wasn’t. “We added the Alamo, she said. Eighth grader Natalie Tallichet was going to do an eagle for each country but in the end contented herself with one. The mural was finished just before spring break. Students were honored at a reception and ribbon cutting where they signed their names to the mural and ate cake. The Around the World mural is only the beginning for the walls of Hogg. A second mural by another group of students is currently in the beginning stages out-
side Sugarek’s office and the space has been chosen for a third. “In general, I think murals are important for Hogg because we are lucky enough to have an art teacher who is a professional muralist, said Sugarek. “Through planning, drawing and painting murals, Ms. Ozanic is able to share her talent and passion with students while also helping them see the positive difference art can make in their community. All students at Hogg Middle School take either a performing or visual arts class in every grade. “Art matters and student murals are a high impact, lasting way to demonstrate this ideal, she said.
