Art Deco Revival
When Greg Gordon closed his popular restaurant La Vista on Fountain View Drive in Briargrove last June, he anticipated he’d be open in the new Timbergrove location by fall. Now he says the plan is to be open by May of 2018. “I’ve learned you should give yourself about a year [to get open],” Gordon said, noting that once the framing and electricity was done, things started moving a lot more quickly. Gordon says that he is spending $1.1 million on the renovation of the former Pizza Hut, including $30,000 in structural changes. The exterior roof is staying but the inside will look completely different with a vaulted ceiling and plenty of windows. “It will be a contemporary shell with a modern interior, a dynamic space we can really call our own,” Gordon said. There will be a patio too. The new restaurant will be
By Cynthia Lescalleet For The Leader Before its award-winning overhaul into a spiffy bike shop and office space, the small ‘20s vintage storefront building on 11th Street in Houston Heights had its share of neighborhood-oriented uses, including a pool hall. During the recent renovation, neighbors and former business patrons dropped by to share tales from back in the day, and some of them also had photographs of the building in use. The vintage visuals proved handy in determining how to renovate and restore parts of the 1,700-square-foot building. The exterior’s distinct Art Deco markings drew particular attention, says Bryan Danna, Re:Vive Development principal. By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com The Houston real estate market kicked off the new year in generally positive territory, with sales up and a mixed pricing performance accompanying an unchanged 3.3-months housing inventory from January 2017. Following suit, many of our local markets showcased results on both ends of the spectrum on nearly all fronts according to latest report from the Houston Association of Realtors. Mixed results in home sales Overall, the greater Houston market saw an 8.9 percent rise in the sale of single-family homes, but the scene was much different in our neighborhoods. In 77007 (encompassing southern portion of the Heights and Rice Military) saw just 23 homes sold in January 2018 compared to 42 the year before – a dip of more than 45 percent. Meanwhile, those in the 77008 (Greater Heights/Lazybrook/Timbergrove) zip code saw 53 homes sold last month, compared to 36 during the same period in 2017, an epic spike of more than 47 percent. To round out the Heights, zip code 77009 (eastern portion of Heights/ Near Northside) saw a slight dip in sales, as 27 homes came off the market compared to 32 the year before. Continuing up north, the Garden Oaks/Oak Forest neighborhoods 77018 held relatively steady with buyers closing on 24 homes last month, compared to 25 the previous January, while 77092 (western Garden Oaks/Oak Forest/Greater Inwood) saw a similar dip – 11 homes sold last month compared to 13 the previous January. Prices rise across the board Across Houston single-family home average price declined 2.1 percent around the greater
Houston market and median price rose 3.8 percent to $218,000 according to the HAR report. Median price for our local neighborhoods followed suit; however, average local price showcased a steady rise, beginning with Rice Military and the Heights. Realtors in this area saw enormous average price jumps accompany the dip in homes sold, with January 2018 coming in at $540,637 according to the HAR report – a spike of more than 24 percent, representing the area’s most substantial rise among markets with a sizeable amount of sales. Likewise, their median home price came in under the wire at a 9.2 increase over January 2017, ending the month at $439,000. In 77008, average price spiked by 12 percent, ending the month with an average price $509,661 compared to $452,499 the previous January, while 77009 experienced a slightly lesser 9.3 percent rise to $346,746 from $317,294 the year before. For the median price, the Greater Heights held relatively steady, while the eastern Heights and Near Northside realtors and buyers saw a 14.9 percent jump from $277,750 to $319,000. North of the 610 Loop, Garden Oaks/Oak Forest average price jumped to $523,300, a more than 20 percent spike from January 2017’s figure of $435,696, while median price held relatively steady at $427,250. Finally, 77092 a modest 5.3 percent jump in average home prices, while median prices rose about 14 percent over 2017’s figure to $285,000 according to HAR’s report. “The Houston housing market seems to have carried the positive momentum from 2017 into the new year, even with some softening in the high end,” said HAR Chair Kenya Burrell-VanWormer with JP Morgan Chase. “We hope to sustain that positive momentum with 28,000 new homes slated for construction this year, according to Metrostudy, as well as healthy gains in employment.”
called La Vista 101 because Gordon signed the 20 year ground lease for the spot last year on April 11 which was the 101st day of the year. That’s not the only tweak. La Vista 101 will not be BYOB as its predecessor was. “I did [BYOB] and it worked in the beginning,” Gordon said. He says that La Vista 101 will have really strong wines priced reasonably as well as other drinks at their small bar. Gordon said that when he started the first La Vista he was in his 30s and spent most of his time in the kitchen. Now he says he’s come to understand that cooking is just a part of the restaurant business. “Infrastructure is key too,” he said. “I plan on putting together a team that can expand into different concepts. You need people to bring ideas to ensure the success of the restaurant. I want to be out on the floor. I want someone younger in the kitchen.” Gordon said that he is bring-

Rodeo wouldn’t roll without them By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com There is no doubt that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a massive endeavor with 33,000 volunteers and 108 committees, ranging from Agricultural Mechanics to Winery Relations. Just who are these hard working, fun loving volunteers? It is no surprise that many come from The Leader’s area. Heights resident Frankie Cox has been a rodeo volunteer for the past 15 years and started when a friend of her family was chairing a new committee. Currently, she works on two committees - BBQ Publicity for the World Championship BBQ competition and the Calf Scramble Donors committee. For BBQ publicity Cox helps schedule the media blitz prior to BBQ. “During the cook off we accompany any media from any outlet that is approved by the show office to the tents they request or to those that we think have an unusual story,” said Cox. “We also escort the media trucks in and out.” For the calf scramble - one the rodeo’s oldest events in which Texas 4-H and FFA members attempt to wrangle a calf for a voucher they can use to buy their own steer or heifer - Cox recruits friends and family to donate the price for the calf. They also get to introduce the student to their donor. “It’s a great experience being with the donors for their first meeting with their scrambler,” said Cox. “They will stay in contact all year with

reports.” Both tasks are fun but the hours are long. Cox is at the BBQ every Thursday and Friday night and Saturday all day. For the Calf Scramble she works four shows beginning at 6 p.m. on weekend nights and 3 p.m. on weekends until the concert starts. Of course, there are perks too, like an entry badge and free parking for the rodeo, and the time she got to meet country music singer-songwriter Gary P. Nunn. But for a stayat-home mom like Cox, her duties also keep her job skills sharp. “It keeps my name and face and work ethic in front of people for when the time comes that I want or need to get back into the workforce,” she said. Her favorite memory is from when her daughter rode Mutton Bustin’ in the stadium a few years ago. “While that was exciting, it
was the friends, fellow committeemen and my team that came out to say hi to her and sent her notes,” Cox said. “The fact that some were not even on the schedule to work but just came to support my daughter, that was an incredibly humbling feeling. We all do it for free, we are paid in support.” Wine Garden Garden Oaks’ Trent Salch has volunteered at the Rodeo Uncorked Wine Garden since 2011. Like Cox he also got involved through a friend who was on the committee and asked if he would be interested in volunteering. “My dad, who had passed away, was a wine connoisseur and I thought this would be a nice tribute to him and the opportunity to learn about something that he loved,” said Salch. Salch volunteers as a bartender and table host at the
Wine Garden over five 8-hour shifts for a total of 40 hours. He said he also spends another four to six hours in meetings prior to the show each year. He says that his biggest perk is to bring another world-class experience to those attending the Rodeo. The wines in the garden are the winners of the Rodeo wine competition. With nearly 100 bottles of wine available for consumption from California, Argentina, France, and yes, Texas, there has been a learning curve for Salch to learn about them all. “I’ve learned more about what I love,” he said. “If somebody wants a sweet wine, or a dry wine, I know what to get them.” Salch says he loves “watching rookie volunteers transition from panic to having a blast during those first busy shifts.” His favorite memory is from one of the food pairings that the garden offers. The challenge was to figure out what wines best pair with fair food. The food in question was a fried Oreo. “Fried Oreo is a Merlot,” said Salch. “Regular Oreo I’d bet a solid Pinot Noir would do the trick.” International Committee Inwood Forest’s Janice Hagemeyer, who owns La Dee Da Catering, is on the International Committee where she serves the approximately 2,000 international guests who come to Houston during the rodeo to buy cattle and equipment. Hagemeyer said that most of the international visitors are from South America and Central America, although

they also come from Europe and Canada. “There are people who take the visitors out to ranches to learn about the way we do things here,” she said. Hagemeyer is on the ‘grub gang’, which means she works with area restaurants to get donated food. Hagemeyer said that all the restaurants donate their food and throughout the year the committee plans appreciation dinners where committee members have a dinner at the restaurants to repay them for their help. During the rodeo, the committee feeds about 500 each day in the hospitality room. A perk is that committee members get to eat as well. The hospitality area has sofas and tables for visitors to relax. There is also live music for the guests. “I’ve met lots of interesting people,” said Hagemeyer, who noted that there is also a translation team so different languages are not a barrier.
Hagemeyer is required to work 24 hours in total but she says everybody is there much longer. As the owner of a catering business, she is providing one of the lunches for visitors. She has also catered the closing party which is when the volunteers officially shut down the room and take a well-earned breather. She started out her rodeo career in the mid-90s on the Gatekeepers committee where she ensured proper entrance of patrons. Hagemeyer has been on the International Committee since 2009. “There has to be space available on the committee,” she said. “They interview you and you have to find a sponsor.” Her funny rodeo story is about meeting a man in a bar who was wearing a rodeo shirt and asking him how she could get involved. Not only did the gentleman get her involved, he also married her.
Local volunteer does it for the smiles By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Oak Forest resident Rosemary Cruz was a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo novice before joining one of the organization’s dozens of committees. Now, she can’t imagine spending time anywhere else during one of Houston’s busiest periods of the year. Just a few years ago, Cruz – a native Houstonian – could count on one hand the number of times the urge struck her to visit the HLSR; it simply wasn’t her cup of tea. “I’m normally not a country western fan,” she said with a chuckle. But by a happy twist of fate, she came across a posting on a local Facebook four years ago, and was hooked. Several years later, she still makes her way to the ticket booth at NRG stadium each year for the last four rodeo seasons to sell tickets to eager rodeo-goers. And she said joining the committee has been one of the best decisions she has ever made, for nothing more than the joyous
smiles present on each face when the ticket stubs are in their hand. From more than 108 committees and more than 33,000 volunteers down to the smallest endeavor, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a massive undertaking, needing every fun-loving, able-bodied person to run smoothly. And Cruz is more than happy to be a part of the magic. “You meet different people from different walks of life – it’s just a great atmosphere being there, and it’s a great Texas/Houston event for everybody,” she said. “It’s so cool to walk through there and know you’ve given back [to something].” A fluent Spanish speaker, Cruz also donates her time on the rodeo’s Go Tejano Day, one of the most-attended shows each year. “There’s a large Hispanic community [here in Houston] and that’s the largest show – I know they need people there who speak Spanish since those folks might get lost and just don’t know where to go,”
Contributed photo Oak Forest resident Rosemary Cruz has served with the HLSR in the ticket booth for four years, and says the smiles on rodeo-goer’s faces makes the time donated that much more special.
she said. “I’ve just found it all very enjoyable. [The rodeo] is just an enjoyable atmosphere to be in.” Cruz is just one of thousands of volunteers donating their efforts to ensure one of Houston’s most-attended events of the year runs smoothly; and she encouraged anyone searching for an ave-
nue to just dive into one of the HLSR’s dozens of committees and find their perfect fit. “I’m just a single person, and some people have been
on the committees for years, so it can seem a bit clique-ish at times. It’s a little intimidating for someone walking into these meetings for the first time when you don’t know a soul, but once you get comfortable, it’s just flat-out fun,” she said. Though she has served for four years, Cruz initially was not set on returning in 2018 – but decided the camaraderie built while serving visitors from all walks of life is too great to pass up. And of course, the perks -- like the entry badge, free parking, passes to the shows -- don’t hurt. She theorized trying the wine committee or perhaps something else -- anything to help bring the spirit of the rodeo to joyful goers. “You’re giving back to your community, and having fun while you’re doing it,” she said.
“Yeah, sometimes at the end of a shift your feet may hurt, but so what? You could be sitting at home doing nothing or be there doing something with your time and giving back.” And even though Cruz has finished her 40 hours in the ticket booth for the year, she can already count four times this rodeo season she’ll be in attendance, and said volunteering has opened her up to a culture she never knew existed. “It’s a great way for someone to just volunteer and have a fun time while doing it. Yeah it’s going to cost you a bit more money – because you’ll wind up going more than you think you will as a result – but I can’t think of a better way to spend my money,” she said. “When I look at what I get out of it, the benefits far outweigh any negatives.”

Arise Baptist a ‘ram in the bush’ for Houston neighborhood By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com As the months have passed, the city has begun to rebuild despite the constant reminders of Hurricane Harvey. However, one Harvey-ravaged neighborhood appeared to fall through the public cracks, and a local church subsequently jumped into action – heeding a scriptural call to action. Garden Oaks-area Arise Baptist Church, originally designated as a distribution center post-Harvey, heard through the grapevine last month that the Trinity/Houston Gardens neighborhood in east Houston had seemingly been neglected in post-Harvey relief, as it was just a small swath of the neighborhood backing up to Halls Bayou that had flooded. Soon after, its members decided that could not stand. “A member of our congregation who works with a nonprofit in the city had some
people from this area come into the office and tell them nobody had been to their neighborhood,” Pastor Will Cover said. Hearing God’s call, members of the church – armed with a full truck of supplies and able workers – trekked from just off North Shepherd Drive and Curtin Street all the way out to the boondocks, going house-to-house with truckloads of supplies. For weeks now, a mix of congregation members and professional builders – coming from as far as Indiana – have come to the aid of Trinity Gardens, from cleanup and tearing out sheetrock to giving out food and supplies, even rebuilding homes for families who lost everything as the result of Harvey. “Everybody we came to said ‘y’all are the first people to even come to our neighborhood.’ No federal relief agency had been able to make

And for that, Boyd is forever grateful. “God told me to just be still, and He would take care of it. I know that God touched [Will’s] heart and touched my heart,” he said. “God always has a ram in the bush, and Pastor Will was my ram, because he brought it full circle for me and my family – I can never repay him enough. I can tell that God put it on his heart to do that.”

Although the restaurant has been pegged as Italian, it’s not all going to be spaghetti and meatballs. “I don’t like calling it Mediterranean either but there will be Spanish influences, Italian influences,” said Gordon, who noted they are putting in a pizza oven. “There will be a lot of vegetables and vegetarian dishes. Everything will be made fresh, including the pasta.” He said that antipasto, an Italian starter for a meal, will be a feature of the menu and he envisions a table getting a variety of $4 to $5 plates to share. Reservations will not be required for either lunch or dinner. Gordon says that there will be more of a casual vibe on weekends with La Vista

Ram in the bush For the last several weeks, one project for Arise and a building crew from Indiana has been rebuilding the home of Larry Boyd and his wife Angela, whose home was completely gutted after more than six feet of water made its way inside during Harvey. Step-by-step, the church walked alongside Boyd throughout the process, with as many as 19 workers – a mix of Arise congregation members and professional builders – at a time uniting to construct a new creation. Boyd, who lived in the home for 26 years pre-Harvey, was beside himself to see the nearcompleted product Monday morning. “The biggest thing I can tell you, that when God says to be still, you be still – let him take care of the rest. Panthers, Eagles, Lions tip off state title quests By Mike Tenney For The Leader The TAPPS boys basketball playoffs are underway and local teams are heavily involved. St. Thomas, St. Pius X, and Lutheran North all clinched postseason berths and they each immediately began their eliminaton games with Bi-District activity across the state last Tuesday night. St. Pius X and St. Thomas closed the year in a tie for second place in Division 1, District 3-6A with 8-4 records after the Panthers topped the Eagles, 64-53 last Friday night on their home floor in the season finale for both teams. The game was tight for three quarters before the home team got their offense rolling in the fourth quarter, tallying 27 points in the final eight minutes to pull away. The Panthers led just 37-36 to start the fourth before outscoring the Eagles, 27-17.
Once again, as they have done all season, the Panthers got balanced scoring with senior Markeith Williams leading the way with 19 points while Stanley Asiegbu notched 15 points and Chad Graham tossed in 13 more. The Eagles also had three players in double figures as Philip Everst paced them with 16 points. Max Vosloh had 12 points and Everett Vaughn added 10 on a losing cause. The visitors got out to an 11-6 lead after the first period and were still up on St. Pius X at the half, 21-20. Williams had eight of his points in the first to lead the home team and Vosloh had six of his dozen for the Eagles, but SPX tallied 17 points in the third to go in front by a point after three periods. Both teams finished second in the district behind topranked Concordia Lutheran, which went 12-0 in the dis-
Scarborough victorious in playoff opener From Staff Reports The Scarborough Spartans men’s basketball team advanced in the UIL 4A state playoffs by defeating the Hargrave Falcons 67-49 last Friday night at Atascosita High School. The Spartans raced out to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter, and never looked back, charging to a 30-15 halftime lead before keeping the Falcons at arm’s length in the second for an easy victory. Senior guard Quinton Hudson and junior big man Noah Smith lead Scarborough with 18 points apiece on the night, while Kevin Johnson and Lydarius Jackson chipped in seven points each in the victory as Scarborough took control from the opening tip and never relinquished it. The Spartans now sit at 16-10 verall on the season, and will face Shepherd High School from just east of The Woodlands in the second round next week.
trict. However, under the tiebreaker process, the Eagles are the league’s two seed in the playoffs while the Panthers are the three seed. The Panthers needed a win over St. Thomas, which they got, last Friday to have a chance to be the league’s two seed but they needed to beat the Eagles by 13 points or more and they won by 11. It appeared, depending on if there were any late results last weekend, that St. Pius would begin the playoffs on the road at Brownsville St. Joseph while St. Thomas’s opponent would be someone from the Dallas area with exactly who still tobe-determined. Both teams won their games before their matchup last Friday to set up a showdown for second place with St. Thomas defeating Beaumont Kelly, 7157 to stay a game ahead of the Panthers going into the last game on the schedule. The Bulldogs hung around

with their hosts for threequarters before the Eagles went on a 24-14 scoring spree in the fourth period to break the game open. At the same time, St. Pius knocked off St. John’s XXIII, 58-45, to stay within a game of the second place Eagles. Graham scored 16 points to set
the pace while Williams and Jeremy Garcia had 10 points apiece. Asiegbu just missed double digits with nine points. Lutheran High North The Lions finished the regular season in third place in TAPPS 4A District 5 and were waiting to see who they would
open against in the playoffs. With a big win over Northland Christian, the Lions ended the year last Friday night at 6-6 in district behind league champion The Woodlands Christian Academy and second place Logos Prep Academy. TWCA finished 11-1 in the league and Logos Prep was 9-3. Northland Christian was in fourth place with 5-7 mark. Senior guard Evans Butts led the district in scoring averaging 24.3 points per game in 12 league games and they are hoping he can continue that hot hand through the postseason. The Lions had two other players also finish district play in double figure scoring with Jaxon Wolf averaging 11.8 points an outing while Nick Grant scored at 10.5-point pace. Lutheran High North closed out the 2017-2018 regular season at 15-10 overall.
Bulldogs searching for redemption on the diamond in 2018 season By Mike Tenney For The Leader Spring is in the air. And one sure sign, aside from the warmer weather, that the colder temps are just about to be behind us is the sound of baseball off in the distance with local high school teams beginning their regular seasons this week. Houston Heights The Bulldogs, along with the rest of the teams in District 18-6A, throw themselves right into the league schedule, playing a district game to start the season. Most teams around the state play a few games and then start their district schedule, but in HISD, the leagues operate the other way as they opened their season against Westbury Tuesday in a league contest. The team is presently competing in the Taft tournament in and are right back into the league 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27 before they begin playing in the Conroe ISD tournament starting next Thursday
afternoon. Led by head coach David Petty, the Bulldogs are seeking a return to the playoffs after finishing fifth in the district last spring. St. Thomas The top-ranked TAPPS 6A team in the state, the Eagles have some lofty expectations to live up. But every year, the team that has won 24 TAPPS state championships overall and is the defending state champs, seem to finish what they start. And while they have lost six of nine starters from last year’s offensive lineup, head coach Ryan Mousteau said after last year’s state finals win over District 3-6A rivals Beaumont Kelly that he liked the group he had coming back and was excited about their chances as well. Senior pitcher Owen Meaney, catcher Philip Matula, and outfielder John Griffin are the big three the Eagles have returning and Meaney and Matula were busy on the recent National Signing Day with Meaney headed to the University of Texas and Matula signing with Louisiana
Tech. Meaney, along with junior righthander Josh Wilson, are expected to give the red-and-white one of the best 1-2 pitching combinations in the state as they go for their third consecutive state crown. Wilson has verbally committed to play at Texas A & M. The Eagles have compiled a 67-11 record over the last two years, including a 34-5 mark last year and got their season going at home Tuesday night against KIPP Generations before they open nondistrict tournament play Thursday afternoon in The Woodlands at the John Cooper School tournament. After three days of traveling to The Woodlands, the Dragons return the favor 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 when they come to St. Thomas to play the Eagles. St. Pius X In search of their first TAPPS state title since 2012 and their first trip to the TAPPS Final Four since 2014, the Panthers have begun their
regular season. Head coach Mike Evans is in his first year with the team after being an assistant at Waltrip for the past four years. He has a senior-laden Panther squad this year with just two juniors and one sophomore listed on the roster. Senior hurler Matt Dillard, who has signed a letter-of-intent to play college baseball at Baylor, will lead the pitching staff as Evans will be looking to build a strong core of starters and relievers behind him. After playing Second Baptist last Friday and then John Cooper School Tuesday, the Panthers are at Lutheran North, 6:30 Friday night to take on the Lions. They return home Tuesday, Feb. 27 to face Angleton in a scheduled 7 p.m. first pitch before continuing their non-league schedule in Spring. They are scheduled to begin their Division 1, District 36A schedule Tuesday night, March 20 when they go to Tomball to play Concordia Lutheran.
