Heights families can benefit from special care nursery Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has received Level II designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), part of Texas Health and Human Services, as a special care nursery for newborns. This is especially comforting to growing families who are expecting new additions and prefer to stay close to home for their deliveries. Level II NICUs have the capability to care for newborns and infants generally born at 32 weeks’ gestation or older who are at risk or suffer from serious illnesses related to pre-term birth or complications during birth. “This designation means Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital has the staff, affiliated physicians, processes and other resources in place to provide specialty care close to home for most newborns who require specialty care,” said Ann Szapor, vice president and chief nursing officer at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. “We’re also fully staffed and capable of stabilizing and transferring babies who may need a higher level of care, or receiving newborns who are stepping down from a higher level of care.” Connecting newborns to network of advanced care The Memorial Hermann Greater Heights 12-bed NICU recently underwent a complete renovation and is one of five Level II NICUs in Memorial Hermann Health System. has direct access to four Level III NICUs and the Level IV NICU at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital located at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. “Our goal is to deliver high-quality, excellent care for our smallest patients and get them home, healthy and with their families as soon as possible,” said Dr. Brenda McIntyre, medical director for the hospital’s NICU. “We constantly monitor our processes and outcomes to ensure we are providing the best care possible for our most vulnerable patients in the NICU.” Hospitals in Texas undergo a vigorous survey and application process to earn a state-mandated
NICU designation. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conducted a thorough site survey of Memorial Hermann Greater Heights’ staff and hospital practices before recommending designation to DSHS. Measles confirmed in NW Harris County By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com Three measles cases have been confirmed this year in northwest Harris County, according to a Monday announcement by Harris County Public Health. Department spokesperson Dee Marlow declined to be more specific about the location of the infected patients, who are two boys younger than age 2 and a woman between the ages of 25-35. The county’s jurisdiction includes parts of the area served by The Leader. Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus that can be spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms are a high fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat and red, watery eyes followed by a rash breakout three to five days after symptoms begin. “If you feel like you’re experiencing symptoms and signs of a measles infection, contact your health provider,” Marlow said. “If you haven’t gotten immunized, get an immunization to protect you and those around you.” There have been six confirmed reports of measles cases in Texas this year.

Neighbors: Busy Bigley earns degree, pursuing another By Elizabeth Villarreal elizasgarden@outlook.com Congratulations to Michelle Bigley of Oak Forest! Bigley earned an associate’s degree in applied science-early childhood in December 2018 with a loud and proud 4.0 GPA. Bigley has set the bar very high for her children, colleagues and students, wouldn’t you say, neighbors? Bigley will graduate on May 11 at NRG Stadium with fellow fall 2018 and spring 2019 graduates from Houston Community College. Not only was she busy working all day and learning in the evenings, trying to squeeze in cheering at daughter Amber’s Roses events when she was at Waltrip High School and daughter Ashlyn’s and son Cody’s tennis events, Bigley found time to volunteer and focus on leadership as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success Community Services Chairperson for three semesters, Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society for Collegiate Scholars. Bigley is continuing her education by transferring to University of Houston-Downtown to obtain her bachelor of applied arts and sciencesearly childhood and family strengths degree. Currently a teaching assistant in the skills for learning and living class at Waltrip, where she has worked since September 2008, Bigley plans to obtain her teaching certification through an ACP Program and will teach preK3 through second grade when she finishes her bachelor’s degree. Husband Cliff said, “My wife is amazing! She has definitely shown our six children and three granddaugh-
ters that you are never too old or young to follow your dreams and better yourself. She works full-time and has gone to school in the evenings. I help out as much as possible with the kids, dinner and the house so she can concentrate on her studies.” The kids and grandkids are Jacob Bigley and wife Nora; Amber Bauman, husband Nathan and daughters Addison and Olivia; Brittani Bigley, fiance Robert Brown and daughter Mariah; Amber and husband Eder Zavala, Ashlyn Shumate, a senior at Waltrip, and Cody Shumate, a junior at Waltrip. Daughter Ashlyn said, “My mother has inspired me to get an education prior to starting a family so I don’t have to struggle as much as she has, even though she has rocked it. She never complains.” Son Cody said, “My mom is the BEST!” Daughter
Amber, currently working full-time at a veterinarian’s office and attending Ashworth College in pursuit of a vet tech degree, said, “I think my mom has shown us dedication and perseverance. I think it is a major accomplishment to work full-time, raise my siblings and myself and maintain a 4.0 GPA. My mom is definitely the best role model we could have ever asked for.” Bigley’s mother, Joan Clark, and her mother-inlaw, Betty Taite, are extremely proud as are her siblings because Bigley will be the first in her family to earn a college degree. The Bigley family has yet another reason to celebrate: Michelle and Cliff Bigley will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day. Happy anniversary, Michelle and Cliff !

Fuel your kids’ brains at lunch By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Packing a kid’s lunch is no easy feat. You either spend a lot of time preparing stuff they may or may not eat, or you just throw some string cheese and pretzels in there and call it a day. Patricia Dawson knows the struggle is real. That’s why she started Yellow Box, a meal delivery service for kids that aims to provide quality and nutritious foods that are both affordable and quickly accessible to busy parents. While about half of her customers are getting lunches for their pre-kindergarten kiddos, the other half get meals for dinner time, when busy schedules sometimes interfere with meal prep. Dawson said the meals are ready to eat out of the refrigerator or can be heated. On the menu are dishes like “Pasta Me Gusta,” which is penne pasta with olives, feta, chicken, green beans and grapes; “Because. BBQ,” which comes with shredded barbecue chicken sliders and steamed broccoli; and “Grandmaster Goyza,” which are chicken and vegetable pot stickers with sweet peas. A black bean brownie accompanies many items for desert. There are vegetarian options and also ones that exclude common allergens. Most contain gluten. School lunch tips Dawson said it’s all about the balance of foods in the meal, but for lunch, the

Valentine’s Day has a special place in her heart, so Salazar goes above and beyond for the occasion in an attempt to relay that sentiment to those she serves. One of those residents, Aileen Sparks, said it had been a while since she celebrated Valentine’s Day. So last year’s events were a treat. “As I recall, it was lively,” Sparks said. “Christian did a good job on the decorations.”

Also, if your kid is not a meat eater, it is important to include other sources of protein. A cup of edamame, which are soybeans in the pod, contains 17 grams of protein. Broccoli and chickpeas contain less at 4.2 and 2.4 grams, respectively, but also are good lunch choices. During the summer months, it’s important to add moisture-rich foods such as watermelon, cantaloupe, steamed broccoli and pineapple. “Nothing replaces water,” Dawson said. Overall, it’s beneficial to keep mixing things up and throwing new items into the repertoire. Your attitude matters, too. “A parent’s attitude toward a food reinforces what their kids won’t eat,” Dawson said. In other words, if you share former President George H.W. Scott grew up in the Houston Heights where he loved playing on little league teams coached by his legendary Dad, Skeeter Lyles. Scott was a talented hot shot lefty pitcher. Along with sports, Scott expressed his talent for art in sketches, watercolor and sculptures. He graduated from Waltrip High School, attended Sam Houston State University and later became a licensed electrician at Local Union 716. Scott had a magnetic personality and was quick to laugh and help a friend. He had a loving heart and was dedicated to his Beagles, Casey and Mollie. He is survived by his sister Susan Lyles Remmert (Doug), brother Eugene Douglas (Sonny) Lyles Jr. (Cathy), Aunt Jess Hartnett, cousins, nieces, nephews along with loyal friend, Walter (Butch) Brooks of Hollywood. Review: Helen’s a go-to for Greek By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com The first thing I noticed when I walked into Helen in the Heights for dinner on a Friday night was the laidback atmosphere and friendly faces. It was still relatively early, so I was able to be seated right away with two of my friends. While the restaurant has small wooden tables through its center, the wall features a lengthy booth that curves at the end with regular wooden tables and chairs on the other side. The curve in the booth gave a comfortable seating arrangement for three people without having to take up a bigger table. Water glasses waited empty on the table and when the server asked if we wanted regular water or sparkling I guessed that the sparkling water wasn’t complimentary. I was right, much to the dismay of my friend, who did opt for the sparkling water.

The appetizers ranged from marinated olives to grilled octopus, but because we couldn’t resist fresh pita bread we ordered the Trio of Dips with an extra side of pita. The pita was cut into small triangles and tasted fresh. The dips change depending on when you go, but my favorite was the chickpea hummus because of its simplicity. It had a chunky texture, which I found I preferred over the typical smooth hummus you can find elsewhere. Our server was extremely helpful in breaking down each entrÊe we showed interest in and made accommodations for us. One friend ordered the

I ordered the Feta Brined Chicken that came with baby courgettes, olive oil and herbroasted potatoes, and pickled tomato vinaigrette. The server sold it to me when she explained how the chicken is marinated for hours in feta and different spices and then grilled with olive oil and more spices. The chicken was delicious with the seasoning boosting each bite, while the vinaigrette beneath the chicken and sides gave it an extra flavor that

t may be confusing to know which cooking oils have the most health benefits. Well, as with many things in nutrition, it varies. Fats that are solid at room temperature we call fats. Those that are liquid at room temperature we label as oils. It’s helpful to understand the types of fatty acids used in cooking oils. Saturated fatty acids come from all animal fats, processed and fast foods as well as some vegetable oils like coconut and palm kernel oil. These fats are more stable than unsaturated fats and less likely to oxidize regardless of temperature. Monounsaturated fatty acids are usually found in olive, peanut and avocado oils. These oils are more stable than polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are liquid at room temperature and found in safflower, corn and soybean oils. A few things to be aware of when choosing cooking oils are the smoke points, storage of oils and how you use them. Smoke point: Some oils have a higher
smoke point, which is the temperature at which an oil burns and produces smoke. The more free fatty acids an oil has, the faster it burns. It then changes chemical structure and produces free radicals. Smoke points vary depending on quality and source or refinement. Some oils with high smoke points are highly processed. Processing methods may have negative effects on health and be pro-inflammatory. Examples include vegetable shortening and canola, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed and soybean oils. Storage of oil: Because light, heat and oxygen are forces that are not in your flavor favor, consider these tips for better storage. Oil in dark-colored glass is the preferred method of storage. Light can degrade oils rapidly, so avoid clear or light-colored glass. Due to traces of the chemical BPA in plastics, choosing a glass bottle is ideal. Be sure to keep the lid sealed tight. Air exposure causes oxidation of oils leading to poor taste. Keep oils away from heat. If storing your oil by the stove or dishwasher is commonplace, consider moving to a cupboard. Use of oil: Coconut and peanut oils are suited for high-heat cooking, as are butter, ghee and lard, while macadamia nut, olive and rice bran oils are better for low-heat cooking. Macadamia nut and olive oils also work well as dressings or finishing oils, as do sesame and walnut oils. Avocado oil, which has the highest smoke point at 520 degrees, can be used for high- and low-heat cooking as well as dressings.

They were covered in olive oil, which didn’t bother me. The roasted potatoes resembled thin chips and I found I enjoyed the light crispiness of each potato. To top off the evening I ordered a Baklava Sundae, which isn’t just fun to say, but good to eat. It comes with housemade vanilla ice cream topped with pecan baklava and chocolate sauce. It’s a very small serving, so don’t plan to share. Everything was timely, from our water glasses being refilled to our entrÊes being set on the table not long after we ordered. This caused an already dimly lit, casual atmosphere to lean even more into a relaxed dinner experience. Helen’s is more upscale in price, but as long as you know that before going, it’s a recommended experience.
