Groceries by robot – it’s here By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
The future – at least with regard to food delivery – has come to the Heights. Maybe you’ve seen the “avant-garde looking handbag,” as described by Wired Magazine, on Houston’s roads and wondered what in the world it is. The answer is Nuro, a delivery service using a selfdriving vehicle that plans to bring Kroger groceries and Domino’s Pizza to customers in zip codes 77005, 77007, 77025, 77035, 77401 and 77096. “Kroger believes the future of retail will include both physical and digital customer experiences,” said Nuro’s Sola Lawal. “We partnered with Kroger to make the convenience of grocery delivery accessible and affordable for customers everywhere.” Nuro was founded in 2016 by Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu, two of the lead engineers from Google’s self-driving car project. The company has been operating in Houston since March. The month before, Nuro announced a $940 million investment from the SoftBank Vision Fund. Initiated first in Scottsdale, Arizona, Nuro completed thousands of grocery deliveries to customers before expanding to Houston, the next phase of the pilot. “We operate 102 stores in Houston — an energetic market that embraces digital and technology advancement,” Yael Cosset, Kroger’s chief digital officer, said in a news release. “The launch is one more way we are committed to sustainably provide our customers with anything, anytime, and anywhere, the way they want it.”
As part of the arrangement, grocery orders can be scheduled for same-day or next-day delivery, seven days a week. Customers order their groceries for delivery via Kroger.com or the Kroger mobile app. The delivery fee is $5.95 per order, and there is no minimum order amount. Customers are notified via text message or a phone call when the vehicle is on its way. “Currently, Nuro operates our delivery service within the City of Houston,” Lawal said. “We also conduct additional testing of our autonomous system and vehicles on public roads in Silicon Valley and Greater Phoenix.” R1, Nuro’s zero-occupant self-driving delivery vehicle, is about half the width of a standard sedan and much lighter. It is classified as a low-speed vehicle with a max speed of 25 mph. “Neither the R1 nor our upcoming R2 vehicle have room for any occupants,” Lawal said. “They are designed specifically for the transportation of local goods.” In Houston, Nuro also operates a fleet of Toyota Prius vehicles that run their autonomous vehicle software and drive themselves while monitored by an in-vehicle safety operator who is prepared to take control of the vehicle at any time. When the vehicle arrives at the delivery address, customers will receive an individual access code that they enter on the vehicle touch screen to open the compartment door. Once they have finished unloading their order, the customer can tap “DONE” on the touchscreen and the door closes behind them. Nuro’s footprint in Houston is just taking shape, according

to Lawal. “In Houston – both with our Kroger and our forthcoming deliveries in partnership with Domino’s and Walmart – we plan to expand our service
area, grow the size of our fleet, forge new partnerships, and collect additional customer feedback to continue improving our offerings,” he said.
Houston Liederkranz brings song, Skat to community By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com
If you wander into the Houston Liederkranz on Ella Boulevard any Tuesday evening to have a beer and play the German card game called Skat, be warned – you very well might become a regular. That’s what happened to Heights resident Reagan Davis, who visited for the first time a little over six months ago and is now the organization’s entertainment chair. He joins The Woodlands resident Gabriele Lorenzen, who moved from Germany two years ago and heard about a place where she could speak and hear her native language – and now makes the drive down weekly. So does David Reed, who lives in the Museum District and attended a soccer watch party for the Champions League Final with his wife and some friends. “I was talking with some of the other people there and they invited me to come to one of the Tuesday night gatherings,” Reed said. “I went and signed up to be a member that next Tuesday night because I could tell that it would be a fun

club to be a part of.” Johnny Schexnayder, now the bar and rentals manager, lived in Oak Forest when he saw an advertisement for Wurstfest at the social club. But when he and his wife drove up and down Ella, it took them a while to find the unassuming structure. While the Houston Liederkranz may have been an inadvertent well-kept secret, it is now beginning to grow in popularity at a time when the membership of other German clubs is waning. And that
is due to a new generation of members who find different things to appreciate about the venue. About half of the 120 members are longtime members and the other half are new recruits. “The Houston Liederkranz is a German-American singing, social club,” said newly elected president Lawrence Denk. “It has been this since its founding in 1925. The makeup of the membership is changed over that time.” In its earlier days, Denk explained, the typical member
might be a first- or secondgeneration German who immigrated to the United States. Europe has been relatively stable since the 1960s, and immigration from Europe is dramatically reduced. “Today’s member would have a different background and interest,” Denk said. “The club seeks to provide a welcome place for all of its membership.” Denk said they see individual members – or, in many cases, See Liederkranz, P. 8B

Area real estate giant expanding footprint By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
The name of the game is evolution. Adapt or perish. An area real estate giant has taken that mentality to heart and has a new era on the horizon as a result. On Tuesday morning, hundreds gathered at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel to celebrate Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Premier Properties’ acquisition of the Texas branches of Berkshire Hathaway Anderson Properties, which had 15 offices in Texas and several in the Greater Houston region. Berkshire Hathaway Premier Properties, which has offices in Oak Forest at 1803 W. 43rd St. and in the Heights at 741 E. 11th St., now holds the distinction of being the largest Berkshire Hathaway franchise in Texas. Berkshire Hathaway Premier Properties President Stacy Mathews said the company approached Anderson Properties in late December about potentially buying them out. Ultimately, he said, it was about expanding the company’s reach to better serve the communities in which they’re entrenched. “We were looking at increasing our footprint,” he said. As it turns out, they were able to negotiate a deal shortly before Christmas. With the acquisition and subsequent merging of offices, Mathews said Berkshire Hathaway Premier Properties went from employing about 150 agents to about 500 and now has 21 offices throughout the Houston area. With that increased workforce, he
said, will come more opportunities to get active in giving back to the community through organizations such as the Sunshine Kids, which looks to add quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities “(This acquisition) allows us to have a larger footprint and gives us the capability to do that,” Mathews said. Berkshire Hathaway Senior Vice President Rosalie Warner echoed the sentiment, calling Mathews and his team the embodiment of the company’s mission and reiterating her trust in them to run with opportunities presented by the acquisition. “We truly love and admire the base of his company and the company we see today,” she said. “Both personally and professionally, Stacy’s company is the epitome of this statement, and all of you should be proud to be in this room with him today.” On Tuesday, Mathews called the acquisition the dawn of a new day for the company, and expressed hope for the future services as they work to ensure everyone benefits from the merger. That’s all that matters. “We’re going to look at more offices in the area and go into areas where we think we can make a good office,” he said. “But we’re not in it just for the sake of having an office – everyone has to be a winner (to consider these scenarios). We’ll look at those communities to make sure we can go in there and make it a winwin for all parties involved.”

Hundreds gathered to celebrate the company’s newest acqusition that made it the largest Berkshire Hathaway franchise in Texas.
Construction underway for Brookhollow shopping center From Staff Reports Fidelis Realty Partners announced Thursday that construction has begun for Brookhollow Marketplace, a 200,000 square foot shopping center at the site of the former Exxon Mobil campus at the intersection of U.S. 290 and Dacoma Street in Northwest Houston. The upcoming retail destination will include Burlington, Five Below, Michaels, Old Navy, Rack Room Shoes, Ross, T.J. Maxx and Ulta, according to a news release from Fidelis, which purchased the 24-acre property in 2016. An 80,000 square foot Floor & Decor also will be part of a the complex, as will an additional 38,000 square feet of inline space for dining,
health and beauty, medical and service businesses. Retailers in the center are expected to open in the fall of 2020, Fidelis said. “As the largest shopping center in a 3-mile radius, Brookhollow Marketplace will become a dominant local shopping destination,” Fidelis Co-President and Chief Leasing & Development Officer Lynn Davis said in the news release. “Drawing from the nearby communities of Oak Forest and Garden Oaks, along with the daily traffic from the many businesses in the area, this center is sure to be busy weekends and weekdays alike.” For leasing information, call 713-623-6800.

By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com
St. Thomas High School basketball coach Gary Hall has been selected to lead a group of the country’s most highly-touted recruits in an upcoming national showcase. Hall was one of two Houston-area coaches selected to coach in the McDonald’s All American Game. He will be the head coach for the East boys team during the 43rd annual showcase April 1 at the Toyota Center. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and be televised on ESPN. “It’s extremely humbling, and it’s an amazing honor,” Hall said in an interview posted Friday to the school’s Twitter page. “I’m just so thankful that the McDonald’s selection committee recognized a normal high school basketball coach … who takes regular kids and works as hard as they possibly can to help them become better on and off the court.” Hall, in his second year as the head coach at St. Thomas, is just the third Texas high school coach selected to coach in the prestigious game, according to the school. The Eagles racked up 25 wins and a regional final appearance last season in Hall’s first year, and sit at 2-0 in TAPPS District 4 action this year.
Hall was previously the head coach at Herndon High School in northern Virginia for more than 20 years starting in 1984, amassing a record of 392-189 and three state-tournament appearances in two stints at the school. He also led Virginia’s Middleburg Academy to a 28-6 record in one season and spent one season at Nacogdoches High School before coming to St. Thomas. “It’s very special for Gary and his family,” St. Thomas Athletic Director Mike Netzel said in a separate interview posted on the school’s Twitter page. “It’s the culmination of a career devoted to the game

Maybe new isn’t so bad By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com
I have a love-hate relationship with progress. The tear-down, rebuild, efficiency-over-quality kind, of course. You see, I won’t be able to point out the small powder blue house I grew up in on Ebony Lane to my future children because it was torn down. The Oak Forest Elementary School I attended was remodeled. Same goes for the Oak Forest Library where I’d spend my afternoons waiting to get picked up after school. Everything looks different, which isn’t a bad thing. The neighborhood looks nicer. There are nicer shops, nicer houses, maybe even nicer people. Jokes aside, I think it’s awesome that this neighborhood offers things I never experienced as a kid. I just won’t be able to share much of the place I grew up in with others. The last two years that I’ve worked at The Leader, I’ve followed what restaurants, bars, dessert shops, etc., have closed and which ones have opened. It’s exciting to watch unique and interesting concepts open up in our coverage area and shrug when chains take advantage of the growth to plop their concepts down, too. It’s fun to write about the developing food scene in the Heights and even now in Oak Forest and Garden Oaks with the 34th Street developments and middle-of-the neighborhood spots. Even better is that some of the concepts opening are owned by people who live in the community. But after two years of watching dozens of new places opening and only a handful
or two closing, I start wondering and, well, worrying. Because eventually the area will be too saturated and doors will start closing for good. Call me pessimistic, or jaded, but sometimes I can’t help but think to myself, “Another so and so is opening? Why?” I’m not crazy enough to say I don’t still think new places are cool, so don’t think I’m over here complaining about what I get to do for a living. What got me really thinking about this is that a few weeks ago I put together a collection of food briefs, the main focus being on a patio bar that was announced to open in the Heights. “That’s original,” one person commented on Facebook. I can only assume it was typed with sarcasm. Another person shared a gif of the word “Mehh” that turned in “Yawn.” This made me wonder (I seem to do a lot of this) if more residents were kind of over it when it came to new concepts opening. I asked locals in a community Facebook group what they thought and a majority said they still get excited for new concepts. I guess I wondered for nothing. “Love new places. I try to get to all of them or ones that appeal to us,” Rene Braud said. “‘New’ never gets old. Love that our area is growing and improving.” On the other hand, many commenters also said that it’s the unique concepts they care about, not the chains. “If it brings in something of a high quality, tastes good, nice atmosphere (clean is sufficient versus super high end), all of those make it intriguing,” Matthew Finnegan said. “Not interested in chain restaurants, though, I’ll pass on those.”
However, a few residents noticed that a lot of “new” can come with problems. Edward Gallardo said that he thinks high commercial rents prohibit the generation of food establishments that provide food that is commensurate with price point. “Contrary to what some may believe, folks don’t want to pay 20 bucks for a small chicken fried steak. They likewise may not want the $10 ice cream scoop,” Gallardo said. “I think that’s why some startups fold when the lease is up, they can’t generate enough volume (profit) to justify the cost.” Catherine DeBlieux loves new places but has noticed that consistency is an issue. She agreed with Gallardo’s comments concerning rent as well. “Having come from the food and beverage industry, there is so much competition now on every level from distribution to the customer purchasing food or beverage,” DeBlieux said. “Prices are inflated for what you get these days because outlets have to be able to keep the doors open. Another key observation is service and consistency and food quality seems to be an issue for restaurants opening in the area.” So, yes, new concepts are still exciting to residents. But residents are not blind to some of the problems that come with an influx of new concepts. I’ll leave you with this: Just don’t forget to want things to be around for the long haul. Because I’m not the only one who can’t drive by certain childhood places. Soon my brother won’t even be able to drive by Doyle’s Restaurant and say, “Hey, I worked there in high school and …”
the Liederkranz website. The clubhouse was at 3519 Barnes St. in the Heights, in a neighborhood with many Germanspeaking residents. In 1983, the club moved to the 5100 Ella Blvd. location. Guests at the opening of the new hall included Houston’s mayor at the time, Kathy Whitmire, as well as leaders of other German organizations in Texas. The old adage that the more things change, the more they stay the same bears true if you look at the activities of the 1925 members, which included concerts, family nights and a Christmas party. Davis said that in addition to the German-themed celebrations, they are making an effort to reach out to families with other events that appeal to adults and children - such as a New Year’s event where the balloons dropped at 5 p.m. and a cookie exchange with Santa was in the house. “We’re going to do some-
thing for Mardi Gras,” Davis Houston, TX 77018 said. www.happybellystudios.com The private room at the club has also been a draw for individuals and organizations looking for space to hold events. Liederkranz, from P. 1B a couple – joining because they have ancestors from central Europe and wish to know more about their past. That includes Denk, whose grandfather emigrated from Germany before 1900. Others have spent time in Germany, perhaps as a student or on business, and wish to keep alive the skills they gained. Like Reed, many have had a good experience at a club function or know friends who have joined. “A few have joined because they like to sing,” Denk said. The club has both an allmale Shanty Chor that sings sea shanties, or songs, in High German and Low German, also known as Plattdeutsch and a Gemischter, or mixed, Chor. Denk said that members are drawn in by the casual and friendly atmosphere – or the German “Gemütlichkeit.” While the founding date for the Liederkranz was 1925, the group got its first clubhouse in 1927, according to a history on
