ALDI continues Garden Oaks shopping evolution By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com H-E-B may loom right around the corner, but it won’t be the only supermarket giant making its mark in the area as the shopping landscape continues to evolve. Hartman Income REIT Management, which owns the Garden Oaks Shopping Center on North Shepherd Drive, said last year that German grocery chain ALDI would open on the property in 2019. A spokesperson confirmed Tuesday

that the planned store opening is set for the third quarter of this year. “We expect a tremendous amount of traffic when ALDI opens,” Hartman Management president and CEO Al Hartman said in a statement. “We’ve already had a rise within the past year with Life Savers and Dollar Tree alone.” In May 2017, Yoga Collective’s departure from the Garden Oaks Shopping Center — coupled with the initial anPhoto by Landan Kuhlmann nouncement ALDI was moving in — signaled big changes. German grocer ALDI is building a store on North Shepherd Drive.

Passion for travel inspires hotel development By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com Houstonian Ben Ackerley has wanted to open and run a boutique hotel since he was 20 years old. At 33, he is a lot closer to achieving his dream. He has purchased a half-acre on the corner of 20th Street and Ashland Street, where he hopes to build Maison Robert, a fivestory, 37-room hotel in the heart of the Heights. Ackerley’s dream was born during a trip to Paris during his college years when he dis-

covered that “traveling was the greatest thing on earth.” What he also found was hosting visitors can be equally gratifying because of the opportunity to be the ambassador of a city. His father, Robert, a computer executive turned organic farmer, told Ackerley he needed to see if he was serious about his ambitions before he’d consider being an investor in any project. Ackerley’s first job out of college was working the front desk of the Empire Hotel on West 63rd St., a 125-year institution popular for its proximity to Cen-

tral Park and Lincoln Center. From there, Ackerley moved to the Mandarin Oriental to be the assistant front desk manager and then relocated to Switzerland to get a degree in hospitality and hotel management. After time in Los Angeles and Australia managing restaurants, Ackerley had been away from home for 10 years. He decided to return to Texas in 2017 and make his dream a reality. Ackerley’s first thought was to open a hotel in Austin, where See Travel P. 3A

Local store sells winning ticket By Adam Zuvanich azuvanich@theleadernews.com A lottery ticket worth millions was recently sold at an area convenience store. The lucky winner had yet to claim his or her prize as of Wednesday morning. According to the Texas Lottery Commission, the $12.5 million, jackpot-winning ticket for the Jan. 12 Lotto Texas drawing was purchased at Everyday, a Chevron station at 3301 Pinemont Dr. The ticket matched all six numbers drawn (8, 11,

22, 24, 30, 49) and the cash value option was selected at the time of purchase, meaning the claimant will receive $8,550,384.24. The Everyday clerk working Tuesday morning said he did not know the identity of the winner, who has 180 days from Jan. 12 to claim the prize. “If you have the winning ticket, we encourage you to sign the ticket, put it in a safe place, seek financial and legal advice, and call the Texas Lottery before coming to Austin to claim the prize,” Texas Lot-

tery executive director Gary Grief said in a news release. “We look forward to meeting you.” Per a legislative change that took effect Sept. 1, stores selling winning tickets no longer receive bonuses. During the previous fiscal year, the Texas Lottery budgeted $4.2 million for retailer bonuses. The most recent Lotto Texas jackpot started at $5 million on Nov. 3 and rolled over 20 times before being won. The next drawing was Wednesday, when the jackpot reset to $5 million.

Neil Sackheim, who sold the building to Radom Capital, did not disclose the terms of the sale. According to HCAD records, the property is valued at more than $650,000.

Great inventions that never caught on THE TV – I’ll switch channels from the Rockets, who are in overtime, to another channel to see the last football game this season. “It was the long bomb! Hail Mary!” Missed it. I go back to the Rockets. “What a fantstic three-pointer! The end of the game of the century!” I need a split screen so I can watch two shows at once. My father-in-law had a TV that could show four programs simultaneously – four small boxes – so that the viewer could flip around to see what was happening and when, but that system didn’t seem to catch on, and was abandoned. Oh well, it was one of those good ideas that didn’t work out. History is filled with such failures. A few years ago a company was pushing a household vacuum system. Your house was wired with pipe, or piped like wire, so that each room had a small hole in a wall that, when activated, sucked air. You simply walked into a room with a vacuum hose, plugged one end into the outlet, or inlet, and proceded to vacuum up

Lynn Ashby Columnist

the aardvark hairs. It never caught on. A vacuum guy told me, “Don’t buy it. Too much trouble.” Besides, who wants to tear up a house to run pipes through it? Pet rocks were all the rage until owners discovered they had to walk them twice a day – and the rocks left unvacuumed little pebbles all over the floor. I have a new stainless steel refrigerator which is wonderful, but magnets won’t stick to it. What’s the point of having a new FrostBite fridge if you can’t stick grandchildrens’ pictures on them, or notes reminding you not to buy an aardvark? One time a company came up with a telephone with a small TV screen so you could see who you were talking to.

But nobody wanted to be seen talking on the phone, and the idea died. There was TeleFood. You called a store and ordered your groceries and they were delivered right to your door. A good idea ahead of its time. The company went broke here, but is still active in Karachi, honest. The rest of the world uses the metric system, but not us. A miss is as good as a meter? I’d walk a million kilometers for one of your smiles, my mammy? We never embraced the meter. It’s not just small stuff that went to the dumpster too early. Ford wanted a new model sedan to compete with GM and Chrysler. Executives hired the brightest minds to develop the car, but it needed a catchy name. Thousands of titles were floated until the executives decided to name the car after Henry Ford’s only “recognized” (I love that designation) child, Edsel. Production lasted only two years and just 116,000 were produced. Ford lost $350 million, or the equivalent of $2.3 billion in today’s dollars, on the venture.

Travel from P. 1A he thought the concept of a boutique hotel would succeed. “Then 15 new hotels opened and that window shut,” Ackerley said. He looked at an empty lot on Westheimer Road that later became the parking lot for Goodnight Charlie’s and considered Kansas City, where the family had ties. But then, one night at dinner at Presidio in The Heights, Ackerley had the eureka moment. “That was when it dawned on me that there were no hotels here,” Ackerley said. “I thought the Heights was ready for something like this and started looking for land.” A commercial realty forsale sign in the yard of the house at 347 W. 20th St. piqued Ackerley’s interest and he began discussions with the owners, who had previously purchased the house from the homeowner who’d lived there for decades. The house, which was demolished last week, was not structurally sound or in condition to be renovated into part of the hotel, according to Ackerley, who said they had donated the house to the Houston Historic Salvage Warehouse. Plans for a new structure on the land were inspired by Faena Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. California architect Darwin McCredie, who was the senior designer on the Westin La Cantera in San Antonio, was tapped to design Maison Robert. “We wanted a place with personality and character,” Ackerley said. “A hotel with a cool bar. The kind of place where you could check in and spend the whole weekend there.” After initially envisioning a brick wall around the hotel for privacy, Ackerley and McCredie redesigned somewhat after meeting with then-Houston Heights Association Board President Bill Baldwin. “(Baldwin) helped us make this something more that the neighborhood would like,” said Ackerley, who added that plans include wider sidewalks as well as a short fence and hedges in place of the originally planned brick wall. “If people are walking by, we

want them to feel welcome to stop in and have a look around.” Community chimes in About thirty-five people attended a meeting Tuesday at Harold’s Restaurant & Tap Room to hear from Ackerley and ask questions. Ackerley told the group he didn’t like the developer moniker because he doesn’t plan to sell the hotel. He just wants to run it. Ackerley said the inspiration for the design came from a 1920 industrial warehouse and that he felt it complemented the area’s architecture. He also stressed he is keeping the trees on the lot – designing the parking around them – and also planting new greenery. “A growing number of people visit Houston for the cultural aspects,” he said. “There is a lack of hotel space in the Heights.” One attendee said she was glad the Victorian home had been demolished, calling it an eyesore. Another said she was sad to see the house go. Parking issues also were discussed. Residents voiced concerns that in addition to the 37 spaces that would be needed for the hotel’s 37 rooms, there would be employee and bar patron parking. Ackerley told the group about purchasing Heights Floral Shop, 401 W. 20th St., for additional parking. The plan is for the florist to move into the hotel. Although Ackerley believes he’s met his parking requirements, he is also looking to lease additional existing parking spaces from the city. Sandra Nobles Wilson, whose brother now runs Heights Floral Shop, was on hand to show her support. “I’m very happy with this,” she said. Ackerley said they are withdrawing the request for a parking variance and now asking for a setback variance as well as a hotel/motel variance to build a hotel in a residential neighborhood. Regarding lighting concerns, Ackerley said the plan is to make sure the parking lots are well-lit to prevent break-ins but he would also consider hooding of lights to

ALDI from P. 1A on 17,000 square feet at the northern end of the property, Hartman has since added Life Savers Emergency Room – which occupies 6,300 square feet on the lot – and national brand store Dollar Tree, occupying 4,700 square feet. “We’re here, and we’re ready for the community whenever they need us,” Dr. Foye Ikyaator said of the Life Savers clinic, shortly after it opened its doors Dec. 23. Diversification of the center’s tenant mix mirrors the area’s evolving landscape on numerous fronts. Life Savers ER, ALDI and Dollar Tree leasing space at Garden Oaks will bring the occupancy to 92.6 percent – a 17.1 percent increase from this time last year. With neighborhood streets beginning just across the way

near two signalized intersections — Garden Oaks Boulevard on the north and W. 38th Street on the south – Hartman hopes to extend its resident convenience even further with the new tenants. Customers can find the majority of their typical weekly shopping list at ALDI, including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items. Most products in the stores are ALDI-exclusive brands, but the company has added a limited selection of national brands within the last year. “We have been anticipating our three new tenants at Garden Oaks Shopping Center for a while, and we welcome them with open arms,” Hartman said. “Our customers are our number one priority and we are happy to accommodate them in any way we can.”

ensure they don’t intrude on neighbors. The condition of the alley off of 20th Street was also a topic of discussion as residents said it is poorly maintained by the city and has been further damaged by developers. Ackerley said they would fix damage they might cause and be open to funding other improvements. To combat drainage issues, Ackerley plans for a rainwater retention tank on property as well as permeable ground for parking. Ackerley said the total footprint for the hotel is small, at around 8,000 square feet with the retail component. He also clarified that the rooftop terrace is simply a second floor balcony connected to guest rooms. “It’s not going to be Studio 54,” he said. If approved by the city, construction would start in nine months and take 24 months. Bruce Vandewalker, who lives on the same block as the proposed development, came away from the meeting feeling better. “It will be good for neighborhood,” he said.

Big companies should know better, as I was telling Coca-Cola. In one of the monumental flops in business history, with great fanfare, New Coke -- the unofficial name for the reformed Coca-Cola – was introduced in April 1985 to replace the original formula of Coca-Cola. Production of the original Coke ended later that week. New Coke lasted for only 77 days before Coca-Cola Classic was brought back. So great was the return of the original drink that ABC News’ Peter Jennings interrupted “General Hospital” with the news. On the floor of the U.S. Senate, David Pryor called the reintroduction “a meaningful moment in U.S. history.” Conspirators whispered that the company intentionally changed the formula, hoping consumers would be upset, and demand the original formula to return, which in turn would cause sales to spike. Coke President David Keough later said, “We’re not that dumb, and we’re not that smart.” Then there was that next step in flying: the Concorde,

the first (and last) supersonic passenger airplane. Twenty were built, and 14 flew commercially between 1976 and 2003. Concorde shuttled passengers from New York to London in three-and-a-half hours or less, traveling at Mach 2, or twice the speed of sound. The plane was operated by both British Airways and Air France. I got to fly on a Concorde from Washington, D.C., to Paris. The interior was relatively small, two seats on each side of the aisle, all first class, great food and drink. I visited the pilot in the cockpit and asked him if, flying so high, was there anything else up there that he needed to watch for. “Yes. Satellites.” But the Concorde was expensive to operate so tickets were costly – around $12,000 (in those dollars) for a round-trip ticket. They got lousy fuel mileage, were so loud that they caused sonic booms, thus couldn’t fly over residential areas. The final blow came in France, when a chartered Concorde hit a piece of debris left on the runway, puncturing a tire and a fuel tank, killing 113 peo-

ple. But it was a good idea. Some ideas are ancient, but no one has come up with anything better, especially when eliminating varmints. My flyswatter looks and works very much like the one my grandmother used. There are several fancy roach killers on the market that electrocute, smother or bore them to death with C-SPAN, but a good pointy-toed boot still works best in kitchen corners. Today there are many versions of mousetraps: “Humane, high -- voltage shock kills mouse in seconds.” “Kills 100 mice per set of batteries.” But the Victor snaptrap, originally patented by William C. Hooker in 1894, is still turned out by the tens of millions in the same factory in Lititz, Penn., now under the brand name Victor. Early TV sets received signals from a gizmo on the roof, then we went to cable, now TVs can receive signals from a gizmo on the roof. That is a re-run. You use shoestrings? So did cavemen in the late Neolithic Age periods. Ashby invents at ashby2@comcast.net

Pete Nordloh Dear Editor: Actually, it will create more traffic, more accidents, and other problems on Shepherd. The new HEB is probably (I’m not sure) the beneficiary of tax abatement, and even though my city councilman, Mrs. Cohen, said that it will be great for walking and biking, she never did answer my question as to why, if this store is so pedestrian and bike friendly, it is a giant unpleasant looking parking garage, which takes up the sidewalk. How did Fiesta manage to exist there for 44 years without all of that parking? And without alcohol, which of course the Heights Beverage Coalition was largely funded by HEB. Planning to add a pet to your home this year?

Dear Tabby, We have a five year old mixed breed dog. He gets to go out in our fenced backyard, but mostly stays inside with us. Should we be taking him on regular walks? Wondering About Walking in Woodland Heights Dear Wondering About Walking,

Did you know that January is, “Walk Your Dog Month”? This makes your question quite timely indeed! And, the short answer to your question is “yes!” Taking your dog for regular walks is hugely beneficial for both your pet AND you! Not only does regular exercise keep your pet healthy, but it can also stimulate his brain so that he’s less anxious and (overall) better behaved and happier in his daily life. In honor of “Walk Your Dog Month,” here are a few other benefits to walking your dog.

member his manners. Digestive System Benefits A regular walk can also help your pooch to get his digestive systems moving (so to speak). A daily walk can aid in alleviating constipation and helping your dog’s digestive system to work at its best. Dedicated Time For You Too Don’t think of walking the dog as a chore that you have to do. Think of your daily walk with Fido as your chance to think, reflect, or ponder things that you don’t have time to think about during the hustle and bustle of your day. I’d be willing to bet that, once you get into a dog walking routine, you’ll look forward to it as much as he does. An Important Bond: By walking your dog, you form

an important bond with him. Being outside, observing the world, is very stimulating for both humans and animals, so being his companion during this outside time will help bond you and your dog to one another for a lifetime. During this season of New Year’s Resolutions, perhaps one of yours was to exercise more or to get healthier. If that’s the case, take your pup along with you on a daily walk around the neighborhood. Start slow and gradually work your way up to longer, more invigorating walks together. By this time next year, you might find that both you and your dog are healthier and happier than ever! Do you have a question for Tabby? If so, email her at dear tabbyquestions@gmail.com

Pet of the Week Meet Wonder This 58 pound white German Shepherd is exceptionally handsome and will make a great pet for someone willing to invest a little time and love in him. You see, Wonder has a few hangups (don’t we all?): He’s a bit afraid of men and doesn’t do well being left alone, or with small dogs or cats. He has a lot of energy, so he’d do best in an active home with older children and/or females only. Surely Wonder’s perfect family is out there...could it be you? If so, visit www.cap4pets.org for more information.

Luna, who later earned a master’s degree in fine arts from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, still relies on a supplemental income beyond selling her artwork. She has been an art teacher for the last 17 years and is in her second year at Nolan Ryan Junior High in Alvin ISD. “There’s only so much in that realm that I can actually do when it comes to giving back to the community,” Luna said. “What I’ve noticed being a local artist here in Houston, there are a ton of very talented minority artists, but the majority of them do not have formal training.” Along with the cost of a formal education in fine arts, Luna said people of color are hesitant to pursue a career in the profession because it generally is not lucrative. She still hopes to help reverse that trend, because she still sees value in her craft. So do the other Houston-area artists who have pledged to participate in The Dream Scholarship Art Show. Mixed media artist John Whaley Jr., originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, said Luna’s mission and philosophy coincides with his. “Art is very universal,” he said. “It’s not only for the affluent to enjoy. It’s all people. People who don’t have money, people who do have money, black, white, Hispanic, anyone with any cultural background can enjoy what we do as artists. “I feel like it’s a great gift and great opportunity as artists to be able to share and bridge the gap between those who are part of high society versus those who feel underprivileged.” For more information, visit artistaluna.com/thedream.

inaugural art show, Luna said she’ll save the money she raises for next year’s recipient. But there is a good chance she’ll soon find a beneficiary. Luna has enlisted Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) and 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, which both serve area youths of color, to help identify candidates. Lauren Power, the art director at Waltrip High School, said she has several students who could apply. “My school is majority minority and majority underprivileged and low socioeconomic status,” Power said. “My kids would definitely benefit.” Luna, whose highly textured, oil-based paintings include a depiction of the marquee at The Heights Theater on 19th Street, is one of 11 artists who have so far pledged to have pieces on display at the free show. There will be a silent auction, with 20 percent of the art sales going toward the scholarship. Luna said artist donations and event sponsorships have so far produced about $1,500 for the scholarship, which has a target amount of $20,000. VIP passes sold for $25, which include two drink tickets and a swag bag, also will be applied toward the fundraising total. To further fund the scholarship, Luna is holding a Fresh Arts Cultured Cocktails event Jan. 31 at Boheme, where she will receive 10 percent of the bar sales between 5-8 p.m. “I think this is wonderful for her to take this on to help underserved students have some funding,” said Alice Valdez, MECA’s founder and executive director. “Doing art is expensive.” Luna, 40, who grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Houston more than seven years ago, has firsthand experience with the challenges of becoming a minority artist and then succeeding as one.
