Houston Methodist Hospital for The Leader Cholesterol can be confusing, especially when you’re trying to make sense of your cholesterol test results. Dr. Ahmed Soliman, a cardiologist with Houston Methodist Hospital, explains what you need to know about cholesterol and why it matters for your health. What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, fatlike substance that can clog arteries and increase risk for heart disease and heart attack. Cholesterol is produced by the liver and is essential for the body, but it becomes harmful when levels are too high. When should I get a cholesterol test? Everyone should have a cholesterol test at least once after age 21. Based on your age and risk factors, your doctor will determine how frequently you should be tested. Do I need to fast before a cholesterol test? Fasting used to be the norm, but that’s not always the case today. Check with your doctor and follow instructions about fasting before your test. What do my cholesterol numbers mean? Your results from a cholesterol test typically include numbers for total blood cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Even if you’re in the normal range for total blood cholesterol, it’s possible to have high LDL, which puts you at risk for heart disease. Review these numbers with your doctor so you understand what they mean for your health. What can I do to lower my cholesterol? Eat a healthy diet that’s low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Gradually reduce red meat consumption to less than one serving per week. Swap in vegetarian or Mediterranean-inspired meals, including fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week and quit smoking. In some cases, medication is needed to help lower cholesterol levels.

Compassion, community come first for Dr. Harrison By Zarah Parker zarah@theleadernews.com Doctor Jaclyn Harrison with White Oak Medical Associates has just opened her practice in the area with the main goal of serving the community with comprehensive, compassionate care that’s convenient. Dr. Harrison is an adult primary care and internal medicine doctor who decided to open her own practice close to home at the Heights Health Tower at 1900 North Loop West in Suite 580. As a Houston Heights resident, she’s focused on local health. “This is my neighborhood, my stomping grounds, this is where my family is and I want to stay here and keep the medical landscape something that’s good and healthy around here,” said Harrison. Know your options for treating prostate cancer Memorial Hermann Greater Heights For The Leader One local prostate cancer survivor is encouraging men to get screened for the disease and learn about treatment options. When Dave Farne first learned he had prostate cancer in 2011, he opted to monitor the disease. “A biopsy showed the cancer hadn’t spread anywhere else. Since prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer, my urologist explained that I could choose to just monitor the cancer. That’s what I did for six years,” Farne remembers. Farne continued to have annual PSA, or prostate specific-antigen, tests to determine the need for future treatment. He says his PSA levels began slowly getting higher and that’s when Adam Hollander, MD, a urologist with Memorial Hermann Medical Group Greater Heights Urology, suggested doing another biopsy. This one showed the cancer was growing. “I’d had six years thinking it might be a possibility that I would have to treat the cancer, so I was prepared. I talked with Dr. Hollander and my regular primary care physician about my options and the potential side effects. For me, surgery seemed to be the right choice,” added Farne. Dr. Hollander says having that honest conversation with your physician is important.

“Dave’s journey shows that there is not a one-size-fits-all treatment for prostate cancer. Men can monitor the disease, undergo radiation, or choose to have their prostate removed. Each comes with its own set of pros and cons. That’s why it’s important that men talk with their doctors about their current lifestyle and select an option that fits their personal preferences,” says Dr. Hollander.
Farne underwent a robotic prostatectomy in July of 2018. Dr. Hollander says advances in robotic surgery have led to improved outcomes for patients. “Using robotics, we can make much smaller, more precise incisions. This not only leads to faster recovery times and less blood loss, but it also better protects the delicate nerves in the area compared to the prior methods of surgery,” says Hollander. For Farne, the recovery was easy. “I barely experienced any pain and the side effects have been mild. I would tell others that they need to be a good patient; don’t be a rebel when it comes to the recovery,” says Farne. Farne says if he had any advice for others diagnosed with prostate cancer, it would be to know your treatment options. “For me, it made more sense to just go ahead and get it out, but I would tell other men to go out and get those second and third opinions, do your research. Thyroid disease The illness affects 30 million Americans, and half don’t know it By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), 30 million Americans have thyroid diseases – and more than half of those people remain undiagnosed. One of those who did get a diagnosis is Forest Pines’ Andreanna Schumacher who found out she had Graves’ disease, a thyroid-related autoimmune disorder, five years ago. “From the outside most people would never guess I had so many health problems and unfortunately thyroid disease is many times one of those invisible diseases that people do not understand unless they’ve experienced it firsthand,” said Schumacher, whose symptoms first started when she was pregnant with her oldest daughter. “I was at an orientation for my husband’s school when I fell very ill and started having dizzy spells with my heart racing,” she said. “All my doctors chalked it up to [my] pregnancy and didn’t see a need to run any tests.” After she had her oldest daughter everything went back to normal, or so it seemed, but with a second pregnancy there
were some very scary times. “I ended up developing a hemorrhage and placental abruption with my second daughter and I had her by emergency C-section at 24 weeks into the pregnancy, almost losing her,” said Schumacher. “I lost so much blood that I needed a blood transfusion.” She got the Graves’ diagnosis when her second daughter was about a year old and Schumacher fell ill for a month. “Each time I went to the doctor they would rule it out as a simple cold,” she said. “One night I started struggling to breathe and felt like I was fighting for my life - which I would find out later that I was.” A doctor at the emergency room recognized the combination of a racing heartrate and a weakened immune system as thyroid related. “He felt for my thyroid and realized that it was actually inflamed and this time a full thyroid panel was done including FT4,” said Schumacher. “That testing showed that while my thyroid appeared at normal levels it actually was extremely hyperactive.” Thyroid 101 Thyroid Awareness.com explains that the thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland

Although relatively small, the thyroid gland plays a huge role in our body, influencing the function of many of the body’s most important organs. In The Harvard Medical School Guide to Overcoming Thyroid Problems, Dr. Jeffrey R. Garber said to think of your thyroid as a car engine that sets the pace at which your body operates. An engine produces the required amount of energy for a car to move at a certain speed. Likewise, your thyroid gland manufactures enough thyroid hormone to prompt your cells to perform a function at a certain rate. When outside influences such as disease, damage to the thyroid or certain medicines break down communication, your thyroid might not produce enough hormone. This would slow down all of your body’s functions, a condition known as hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid. Women are five times more likely than men to suffer from hypothyroidism. Aging is just one risk factor for it. Your thyroid can also produce too much hormone sending your systems into overdrive, a condition known
as hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid. Other thyroid conditions include Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. Thyroid cancer is something to be aware of too, but the AAEC says that a very small percentage of nodules which develop in the thyroid are cancerous. One Leader reader wrote that he didn’t think he had any warning signs when he walked into his annual physical 14 years ago and the doctor noticed a tumor in his neck which revealed itself to be cancer. “I was having “carpal tunnel” issues in my right hand off and on which can be a symptom of untreated — or inadequate treatment of — hypothyroidism,” he said. “None of these symptoms I connected with thyroid disease or cancer.” After a total thyroidectomy and partial lymphectomy on the right side followed by radioactive iodine treatment, he has been in remission – and the carpal tunnel went away too. Concerned? Be persistent Garden Oaks’ Monica Danna was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in her 30s, and later got a diagnosis of poly-
cystic ovary syndrome, linked through both genetic and environmental factors to thyroid disorders. To top it off, Danna also found out she had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis as well. “When people suspect there is something up with their thyroid, I always encourage them to see a specialist,” said Danna. “Most general practitioners are not up to date on the latest tests that show the intricacies of normal thyroid ranges.” “Early detection is key,” echoes Andreanna Schumacher. “It’s important that people know what tests should be done because I went for so long without a diagnosis and my thyroid always tested normal when doing basic lab work.” Danna has found health through the right mix of medications and nutrition, which she gives major credit for her well-being. She did an elimination diet to see what she should and should not be eating.“When I don’t eat right for me I feel so much worse,” she said. These don’t have to be exclusive of one another. While many health seekers consider eating clean and healthy as expensive, there are strategies and tools to stay within spending limits. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) serves as a non-profit agency sharing information to protect public health and the environment. They are well known for the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for safer cosmetic and beauty care products as well as the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen shoppers guide to pesticides in produce. EWG publishes a guide for healthy eating on a budget. Geared toward Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients it gives all consumers tips, tools and recipes to shop and cook while on a budget and respecting the environment at the same time. The guide gives practical advice for things to do before your shop, practices to consider at home and what to look for at the store, along with key resources that may help provide food and other support in the community. Community mourns slain Jazmine Barnes From Staff Reports Hundreds of people filed into Community of Faith church at 1024 Pinemont Dr. Tuesday morning to mourn the death of Jazmine Barnes, the 7-year-old slain in a driveby shooting the morning of Dec. 30 while riding in a car with her mother and sisters. More than half of the church’s 2,000-seat sanctuary appeared full of mourners as Jazmine was laid to rest Tuesday. “God blessed me and my family with an angel,” her father Chris Cevilla said. “He’s seen fit to take her back to heaven to be with him, but her job was done.” Speakers at the funeral included Cevilla and Jazmine’s mother, LaPorsha Washington, along with Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez – whose office is investigating the shooting – as well as Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee. “I am grateful to everyone,” Washington said. “This is a celebration.” The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has filed capital murder charges against Eric Black Jr., 20, and Larry D. Prior to the tip which led to the pair’s arrest, investigators had been working off a sketch of a white man behind the wheel of a red pick-up truck as described by witnesses. According to media reports, LaPorsha was driving Jazmine and her sisters southbound on the East Sam Houston Parkway feeder road near Wallisville Road shortly before 7 a.m. Dec. 30, when reports say they were fired upon.
IN MEMORIAM Gary L. Parker, of Houston, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 2, 2019, just a few hours after his beloved Texas Longhorns won the Sugar Bowl. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., January 8, at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church of Houston with the Rev. Nathan Lonsdale Bledsoe officiating. There will be no scheduled visitation. Gary was born July 10, 1940, in San Francisco, California, to Georgia Catherine Nesbit and James William Parker. Gary grew up in Houston and attended schools in the Aldine Independent School District. From an early age, Gary loved animals and sports, and he was very active in FFA in high school, going so far as to become the state treasurer. Sixty years ago on Christmas Eve night, Gary went on a blind date with Dian Small. In 1962, Gary and Dian married and remained devoted to one another throughout their fifty-six years together. Gary deeply loved his two sons, and he was always willing to make room in his recliner for his dogs. Gary attended the University of Texas, and he was a steadfast Longhorn throughout his life. He began his career as an insurance agent before transitioning into a successful career in industrial sales. He refereed basketball games for much of his life, and traveled to Austin to watch the annual state high school basketball tournament for more than 20 straight years. Gary enjoyed traveling, golfing, and solving problems - from crossword puzzles up to larger mechanical issues. He was always good for a story or joke. He also enjoyed participating in dinner clubs with his friends and neighbors, and he was proud to celebrate his and Dian’s 50th wedding anniversary with many of them at a party hosted by his two sons in 2012. After retirement, Gary became a loyal volunteer at Memorial Park Golf Course, known as one of the best municipal courses in the nation. The course soon made Gary a member of its staff, and he was able to spend his days surrounded by a game he loved, by fellow golfers who were dear friends, and by the ducks he loved to feed. He welcomed his first grandchild in July 2017, when Sunday afternoons became reserved for FaceTiming between his granddaughter and her “Pop.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Parker, and his brother, Denny Parker. He is survived by his wife, Dian; his two sons, Jody and Rusty; Rusty’s wife, Lindy; and his granddaughter, Vonn. Sincere thanks to the staff at Windsor Houston.
