This year, instead of focusing on foods that you need to remove from your diet, try to challenge yourself to add new foods to your Hawthorne weekly menu. Studies show that having a nutritious diet does not come from just one certain “super food”, but from the variety and the vibrant colors of foods you have in your diet. Here are some simple changes to give your diet a boost in 2016: Swap Out Rice for Quinoa – Quinoa (Keenwa) contains more protein than any other grain (4 grams per ½ cup serving). This grain is rich in iron, potassium, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, zinc, and has some folic acid. When cooked, this grain has a soft and creamy texture that can easily replace rice in most recipes. Are you a smoothie drinker? If you are looking to get more fruits and veggies into your diet, then maybe it’s something you should consider. As the Society for Public Health Education found in a recent study, middle school and high school students increased their fruit consumption from 4.3 percent to 45.1 percent when fruit smoothies were introduced for breakfast at two Utah schools. Of course, it’s possible to overload. New diet from P. 1B ing plain flavors usually ensures that the products are lower in added sugars. For example, a small container of vanilla Greek yogurt has 18 grams of sugar (11 grams of which are added sugars) compared to plain yogurt that has just 7 grams of sugar. If you need flavor in your plain yogurt then add your own fruit for a natural sweetness and fiber. Munch on Walnuts - Walnuts have the highest level of omega-3 fats than any other nut. Research shows that eating just 1.5 oz of walnuts a day along with a low saturated fat diet will reduce the risk of heart disease. They are also an excellent source of vitamin E, which may help in fighting breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Pack in the Veggies – When making pasta or casserole dishes, double the amount of vegetables listed

St. Joseph Medical Center to host 3rd Annual “Go Red for Women” For The Leader
St. Joseph Medical Center will celebrate the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 5 with its 3rd Annual “Go Red for Women” health fair, partner expo and luncheon as part of its Women of Wellness Program. WOW is a health and social program to empower women as healthcare consumers by providing educational information and hosting fun, inspiring events that celebrate women’s role in their own wellness. Titled “Relax Your Way to a Healthy Heart,” the luncheon features keynote speaker Julie Nise, a nationally recognized Houston-area marriage and family therapist. Nise holds an M.A. in clinical psychology with an emphasis in marriage, family and child counseling and is a licensed professional counselor. She is the author of
three books on relationshipbuilding, has appeared on The Dr. Phil Show six times and is frequently quoted on relationship issues by national news organizations. A self-described no-nonsense relationship trainer, Nise will share her process for creating happiness and reducing stress. “Problems within our various relationships brings stress to our lives. Alleviating stress can improve our health. Results don’t come from analyzing the past…real results come from being trained on making changes, learning and having fun. Get ready to change!” said Nise. Additionally, board-certified Cardiologist Ethan J. Podet will provide information and insights on the latest heart health care. Dr. Podet specializes in cardiovascular disease and has more than 34 years of experience.
“There are several misconceptions about heart disease in women,” said Dr. Podet. “Most women do not know that heart disease causes one in three deaths in women each year and the warning signs for women are different than those for men. Women need to know the facts and what they can do to lessen their risks for heart disease and stroke. Join us and learn more.” Attendees are encouraged to wear red to support National Wear Red Day, a national public awareness day to bring attention to the leading killers of women – heart disease and stroke. Tickets for the luncheon cost $10 and proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association. The event takes place at the SJMC George W. Strake Building, 9th floor auditorium at 1401 St. Joseph Parkway. Free valet parking is avail-
