There has been a big move in the past five years, encouraging parents to support their zoned schools – or at least to give them another look. And many like what they see. “I like Love Elementary because it is dual language, diverse, and full of really passionate teachers who have worked with my kids’ needs individually to learn, said Christine Lambeth. The dual language draw was something that also appealed to HISD parent Rachel Lowe. “We are so happy to be zoned to Helms, which is a full Spanish Immersion program,” said Lowe. “It is a small campus, where all the students and faculty know one another and we can walk. Having the ability to prepare for the day with a brief walk and then unwind while looking for tadpoles in the ditches is so special.” International Baccalaureate schools also attracted parents. “We moved from Norway a year ago and have always sent our kids to local schools rather than international schools,” said Veronica Rasmussen. “My kids go to Heights and Hogg and we like both schools because they are IB schools and the kids can bike to school as they did in Norway.” Durham Elementary, an IB elementary school, has been a good fit for Lisa Gutierrez’s son – and for her. “It is both IB and dual language, and has provided a diverse learning environment with committed teachers and staff at my child’s pace,” she said. “I love that we can bike to it too.” Another program with its fair share of devotees is the Montessori Method. Montessori since PK 3 and will continue there through the eighth grade. “Kids are grouped in age clusters,” said Ochoa. “The kids create work plans with their teachers and they run their own day and work at their own pace. The older kids mentor the younger ones and the younger ones learn how to work to their potential from their older peers. The kids are all very connected to each other as a result.” Ginny Ledwell now loves Garden Oaks Montessori but was hesitant at first about the method. “We gave it a go because it was our zoned school and I wanted my son to have neighborhood friends,” she said. “We have been blown away with it. The growth academically and maturity in

terms of being a good citizen have been astounding.” Aside from the range of programming at HISD schools, parents say that the diverse student body at many schools has been a plus. “What I love about our neighborhood school is the tight-knit, kind community where friends become like second, third, or twentieth families,” said Jennifer Cross. “I also love the wide economic, racial/ethnic, and cultural diversity present— we’re able to show how everyone matters and all kids can achieve. We have some of the best teachers around, and a tireless PTO. We’re a Title I school, and our kids are served well.” There are a range of good private school options in the Leader area too. Parents tout

smaller class sizes and the individualized attention their children receive. Candice Croker related her recent experience at St. Thomas High School’s parent/teacher conference night. “The teachers were wellprepared and so very aware of my child’s individual strengths and areas for improvement,” she said. “His classes are no bigger than about 16 kids so they put so much emphasis on active class participation.” Amy Shaughnessy values the sense of community at St. Rose of Lima. “Most of the teachers know [my daughter] – even the ones who never taught her,” she said. “We didn’t set out looking for a faith-based school for her – but I began to realize that the prayers and

In addition to specialty care, emergency medical care is moments away. If you are looking for a general practitioner, or educational classes there are plenty of local resources:

Eating around the world By Betsy Denson betsy@theleadernews.com

When I asked for recommendations for ethnic restaurants in our area, I was surprised at all the feedback I got. I don’t know why. Food is something that people are only too happy to talk about. My question centered on nearby options, and although some of these are farther afield, people say their favorites are worth a short drive. Thai and pho lovers were especially vocal. Kay Harnden said that for her, Thai Street Food, 1010 W Calvacade St., can’t be beat. She especially likes Khao Soi Gai, Tom Kha Gai, and the Roti with curry. “All of their curries are great,” she said. “Have not had anything there that I didn’t love.” Jeremy Goodwin said that the two restaurants that stand out for him are Thai Lanna on 18th and Aim Thai on West Montgomery. “[They’re] completely contrasting styles of Thai food,” he said. “Aim Thai is amazing,” said Lauren Ayres. “We always get the beef jerky, egg omelet, and a noodle or curry dish.” “Thai Spice in the Heights,” said Mischelle Baird. “I get their Pad Ped Catfish with Eggplant.” Natalie Malla votes for Asia Market on Fulton. “I love the Pad See Ew with Beef and the Kai Pa Lo on the hidden menu,” she said. “I love Pho Le on Antoine,” said Nora Heene. “I get the Pho Ga with extra jalapeños and lime and their Beef Chunk Steak grilled with fresh peppers, garlic, tomatoes and a side of lemon juice with pepper and steamed rice. They’ll even sub the rice for vegetables if you’re doing low carb.” “We just tried Pho and Grill on 290 near the Academy and it’s under new management,” said Beth Williams. “Their Vietnamese eggrolls are amazing according to my husband. Fish sauce is something the

owner was very proud of and we agreed. The pho broth is perfection.” Also for Vietnamese, Abby Schumacher likes Vietnam Restaurant at 605 W 19th St. “It’s been around for decades, [and] is delicious,” said Schumacher. Carrie Lam enjoys the Shaking beef, Bahi Mi and chicken wings from Hughie’s, at 1802 W 18th St. They also have a location on North Main.

It can be hard to take the kids out to a restaurant, but for families in The Leader area there are plenty of familyfriendly venues that have a great atmosphere and delicious food. As recommended by parents themselves, these restaurants are tried and true for taking little ones out. Serving The Leader areas are:

• Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce 2050 N. Loop West, Ste. 203 713-861-6735 www.heightschamber.com

The Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce aims to connect businesses with the resources they need to take their organizations to new heights (no pun intended.) the best Saag Paneer!” Tara Lehr likes Tarka Indian Food on 19th Street. “Tikka Masala is my favorite,” said Lehr. Jenni Ferrell also recommends Surya Indian on Durham although she says the price point is higher than Tarka – “but when you need a fix, you need a fix.” For Italian lovers, the food and cozy vibe at Cavatore Italian, 2120 Ella Blvd., makes it a family favorite. Doyle’s, 2136 W 34th St., was praised for its Italian-American food and togo window for busy nights. For Mexican, more than one person endorsed La Tita Gorda Taqueria at 3865 Mangum Rd. The Empanada Company 2925 W T C Jester Blvd, got props for its Mexican style empanadas. For other South American fare, Olivia Carrizal recommends Mi Recuerdo Colombian & Mexican Restaurant, 7416 Fairbanks North Houston Rd., off of 290. “They have amazing food with awesome prices,” said a recent Yelp reviewer. “The queso is the best in town. I don’t know what they put in it,

but it keeps me coming back!” Meggan Watson is a big fan of Variedades El Salvador, 9501 Long Point Rd., for pupusas. “You can pick up groceries, buy a soccer jersey, practice your Spanish and have a delicious pupusa,” she said. Several options for African cuisine were also suggested. “The new Peli Peli kitchen in Whole Foods is a nice change,” said Suzanne Ragsdale. “Love their fajita plate with rice.” Thomas Nguyen is one of the co-founders of Peli Peli Kitchen, a South African concept in Houston. “Peli Peli features flavors from around the world as South Africa is literally a melting pot of people and cultures just like America,” he said. “We have curries and sauces featuring Peri Peri, a spice founded by the Portuguese in South Africa.” For Ethiopian, Marjorie Juge thinks that Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant & Lounge, at 6800 Southwest Fwy., is worth the drive. Likewise, Christine Mill says Sheger Restaurant at 5506 Bellaire Blvd. rates a trip. Happy eating!
