Staying safe and secure The Houston Police Department has walk-in service or phone contact through two commands covering Leader communities, provides storefronts for more localized policing, and offers an increasing amount of services online at www. houstonpolice.org. The two larger stations still provide the bulk of the law enforcement coverage for Leader-area residents. The North Command Station is located at 9455 W. Montgomery Road and covers Leader-area communities above the North Loop. Capt. R.A. Montgomery heads the North Division. Call 281-405-5300 for information. The Heights area is served by Central Patrol out of the downtown HPD headquarters at 1200 Travis. Central Patrol covers Districts 1 and 2. • Residents should call 911 or central police dispatch at 713-8843131 to report crimes in progress. • Residents can call police about being away from home on vacation or to make insurance reports by calling their respective commands. To alert police about being away from home on vacation or to make insurance reports, people in Districts 3 and 6 should call the North Police Station at 281-405-5300. In Districts 4 and 5, call 713-744-0900. • Residents can go online to check major situations in progress, to check on case status if they have a case number, and to submit an alert to explain a non-emergency situation that requires attention, such as extra patrolling. Community storefronts are staffed by police officers who interface directly with the community to fight crime by educating citizens on crime prevention. These officers provide a vital link between the police and the people by speaking at group meetings and providing Citizen Patrol training, reporting on neighborhood
crime statistics and distributing information brochures. • The Independence Heights Community Storefront is located at 803 Crosstimbers and covers the area south to Loop 610, north to Tidwell, east to Interstate 45 and west to North Shepherd. One officer, a sergeant and a civilian employee staff the station, which is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The phone number is 713-742-1491. • The Heights Community Storefront is located at 1127 N. Shepherd Drive, just north of West 11th. The area covered includes North Durham to Loop 610, south to Memorial Drive east of Hardy Toll Road. A sergeant and six officers staff the storefront 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 713-803-1151 for information. • The Near North Community Storefront at 1335 W. 43rd mirrors

I’d heard from several of neighbors in Shepherd Park Plaza that Adolf Hoepfl was an excellent, trustworthy auto repair garage. Their service and mechanical expertise is far above par. They do not nickel and dime me to death. Whenever we take our late model vehicles in for repair or maintenance they let us know what the problem is in a timely manner along with a fair estimate of cost. They’ll tell you Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30am-5:30pm what work needs to be done now and what can wait. They Online: www.AdolfHoepfl.com also give me a ride home for free when I need to leave my car there. They have our business and I’ll continue to refer Adolf Hoepfl to everyone. Great auto repair shop.”

Government 101: who are your elected officials? Political representation can sometimes be confusing, particularly after the redistricting process mandated after the U.S. Census every 10 years to make sure local, state and national districts fairly reflect their populations in numbers and ethnicity — sometimes followed by court challenges and tweaking. Following is an updated list of Leader area representatives.

Life’s a picnic: enjoying the great outdoors Even though Leader neighborhoods are in the heart of a huge, metropolitan area, plenty of green spaces abound to enjoy the outdoors and -- weather permitting -- a picnic. Here are some of the most popular spots. MEMORIAL PARK 6501 Memorial Drive Any park that has a road called “Picnic Lane” is up to the challenge of being a prime locale for those wanting a memorable outdoor experience. This massive park, close to Leader neighborhoods, features picnic grounds and all kinds of spots to set up for a family outing. There are laygrounds, water, trails for hiking, biking and jogging – not to mention tennis, swimming and golf, and the Houston Arboretum for nature explorations. STUDE PARK 1300 Stude A winding green space along White Oak Bayou at the edge of the
Heights, with lots to do for all ages and views of downtown. There’s a playground, swimming and a water playground, sports fields and an .83-mile trail to enjoy.
down a blanket and a picnic basket. You can wander nearby at dusk to watch the bats swoop out on their nightly search for bugs or simply enjoy the beauty of the skyline.
SPOTTS PARK 401 S. Heights Blvd. This 16-acre park boasts picnicking, challenging trails (some of Houston’s rare hills are here), a playground, covered and lit basketball court, tennis – not to mention a great view of the skyline.
WEST 11TH STREET PARK 2400 W. 11th St. It’s easy, when you’re planning a community, to identify how many parks to put in and where to locate them. It’s a lot harder to carve out parkland in existing neighborhoods, especially desirable ones where developers lurk to gobble up any land that becomes available. West 11th Street Park is a jewel in Timbergrove, 20.2 wooded acres saved by a group of persistent nature lovers for everyone to enjoy. There’s even a Wireless Wilderness Cell Phone Tour to help you identify what you’re seeing as you stroll.
BUFFALO BAYOU PARK Along Allen Parkway This is a work-in-progress under the guidance of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, so you have to be flexible to keep away from construction areas. After years of grousing about why Houston doesn’t capitalize on its waterway the same way San Antonio has with its river, finally there are new bridges, paths, kayaking, public art and festival grounds – not to mention plenty of places to plunk
T.C. JESTER PARK 4201 W. T.C. Jester Blvd. Nestled in a long strip between T.C. Jester and White Oak Bayou,
this park is a neighborhood go-to spot in Oak Forest. There are age-appropriate playgrounds, a one-acre-plus dog park divided for large and small pooches, hike and bike trails along the bayou, a renovated swimming pool, a skatepark, and what’s universally touted as Houston’s best disc golf course. JAYCEE PARK 1300 Seamist A great neighborhood park in Timbergrove, with a playground featuring swings and a seesaw, a climbing wall, tennis and a water feature. In that same style of expansive neighborhood parks, also check out: OAK FOREST PARK 2121 Judiway Big, wide open, with lots of shade and a swimming pool open in the summer.
CANDLELIGHT PARK 1520 Candlelight Lane Plenty of shade and room to run, plus a nice community center with a gym that keeps hours Monday through Saturday. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department manages 14 parks in Leader neighborhoods that provide recreational programming and organized sports activities for residents. Here are the additional locations. • American Legion — 3621 Golf • Aron Ledet — 6323 Antoine. • Cottage Grove — 2100 Arabelle. • Lawrence — 725 Lawrence. • Rosslyn — 6500 Pinemont. • Watonga Parkway — 4100 Watonga. • West 11th — 2600 West 11th. • White Oak — 1513 White Oak. • Woodland — 212 Parkview. For information, call 832-395-7000 or visit www.houstonparks.org.

Tree and junk waste disposal In alternating months, residents may dispose of their Tree Waste and Junk Waste at their curbside. Tree Waste months are January, March, May, July, September, and November. will NOT be accepted).
Recycling
The city’s Solid Waste Management Department operates two types of recycling collection services for participating areas of the city of Houston, including many
Leader communities. The first is basic curbside recycling, which provides an 18-gallon bin that’s collected every two weeks. Some communities now have – and others will soon be phased into -- automated recycling, which allows residents to place their mixed recyclables in a 96-gallon cart that’s picked up every
