The Power of Play: Adaptive Programming in Burbank

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in Burbank, the McCambridge Recreation Center is filled with the familiar buzz of activity. The sound of basketballs bouncing against the hardwood floor, the whir of powerchairs maneuvering in formation. Across the gym, athletes lean forward with laser focus as they roll Boccia balls toward a target. In another room, fencers in protective gear prepare for a duel, their blades flashing in quick bursts of movement.

This is not just another Sunday practice. It is part of the Parks and Recreation Department’s (Department’s) growing Adaptive Sports programming, where athletes of all abilities come together to play, compete, and thrive.

The program currently offers four adaptive drop-in sports: Wheelchair Rugby, Para Fencing, Powerchair Soccer, and Boccia. Additionally, the department hosts wheelchair basketball in the summer months. Each sport pulses with its own energy and excitement. Adaptive Basketball builds endurance and teamwork. Wheelchair Rugby brings intensity, speed, and the excitement of high-impact play. Para Fencing demands quick reactions and concentration under pressure. Powerchair Soccer offers the thrill of speed and strategy, while Boccia creates a level playing field where athletes with physical disabilities can compete with precision and patience.

For many athletes and their families, adaptive programming is not only about learning the rules of a game, it is about finding a place to belong, to be celebrated, and to push past their individual limits. Parents cheer as their children discover new strengths. Friends share laughter after a great play. Coaches beam with pride as confidence grows and connections form.

The Department’s vision for the future is clear, and Parks and Recreation Director Marisa Garcia captured it best:

To learn more about Burbank’s Adaptive programming, visit www.BurbankCA.gov/AdaptiveRecreation.

PARA FENCING

“Looking ahead, we will continue to expand opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and build a future where recreation truly is for everyone. Each week brings a new chapter filled with perseverance and teamwork. Our adaptive programming is a celebration of inclusion and a reminder that when everyone has an opportunity to play, everyone wins.”

Coach Michael Rosenkrantz believes “Everybody has the ability to participate and everybody should have the opportunity to find their passion in life no matter their ability. Playing sports is much more than competition, it's about staying healthy physically, socially and emotionally.

Sunday| 11:45AM-2:15PM

Coach Armando Ornelas shared “For many it marks the first time that they interact with other individuals that are in the same situation as they are. I've developed lifelong friends along the way and it's very rewarding to see the growth of bringing families together.

“Adaptive sports can truly be one of the most impactful things you can be a part of. For me, it changed my life and became part of my lifestyle. Sports can be the vehicle that brings people together,” said Wheelchair Basketball Coach Alvin Malave.

COMING SOON!

The Department is looking forward to launching the Adaptive Hiking program by late Fall 2025. The Leadership Burbank Class of 2025 raised funds to support the Department's adaptive recreation programs and generously donated two all-terrain motorized track chairs with the goal of making our trails accessible to individuals of all abilities.

Helen Putnam Award Recipient

The Department was honored with the 2025 Helen Putnam Award of Excellence, one of California’s most prestigious recognitions for innovation and leadership, shining a spotlight on programs that serve as models of equity and excellence for communities across the nation. This award reflects the Department’s commitment to adaptive recreation, which reaches far beyond weekly practices and games. Each year, the Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo (BASE) welcomes the entire community, including residents and participants from neighboring regions, to experience adaptive sports up close. In 2025, only its second year, the Expo welcomed 240 registered participants, more than 3,000 park visitors, and raised $13,460 in sponsorships, marking a milestone for the Department. This recognition is not only a thrilling accomplishment but also a powerful reminder that inclusion has the ability to transform lives and inspire an entire community.

Bruce

Bruce has been at the Shelter a little over a year. He was quite a sight upon arrival, with just patches of hair, irritated skin, and sad eyes. The staff and volunteers have loved him, medicated him, worked with him, hiked with him, and fostered him, and we can honestly say that he is a fabulous dog. He will need to stay on a specific diet to keep his allergies under control, but otherwise pretty low maintenance. Bruce is now recovered, has grown some new fur and ready to find his forever home!

Mila and Sasha

Mother/daughter Sasha and Mila are a fantastic, bonded pair of German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mixes. Mila and Sasha are very smart, and food motivated so training will be easy. Their Shepherd nature means they want to be where you are and make your life fun and interesting. These two are so in sync, that sometimes it feels they are one dog instead of two. They are a source of laughter and playfulness- all they want from you is a safe space, consistency, love and regular long walks.
