We were also creative and smart. We decided that if we made Ideas and Business an either>and, not an either>or, we could make things happen. For our clients. And for ourselves. 50 years later, the data would suggest we’ve done that. $4,000,000,000 in capitalized billings. Almost 500 client partnerships formed. $275,000,000 in payroll. 2,995 awards won for our work. 55,000 volunteer hours worked. $35,000,000 in spending with minority-owned businesses. The scoreboard doesn’t lie. But it doesn’t tell the whole truth, either. The truth is we’re no longer young and scared. But we’re still playing that way. BUNTIN. 2072, here we come.

THE AGENCY MOVES into its new digs on Division Street, with landscaping by staff. What goes on to become a multi-decade relationship with First American National Bank is born. The partnership will see them go on to dominate the Southeast market. Ironically, the same can be said for us – with an early warning shot coming in the form of our first 5 Southeast ADDYs.
WE WERE PRIVILEGED TO PRESENT AGAINST OTHER AGENCIES FOR THE FIRST AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK ACCOUNT. WE WENT ON TO WIN THE PRESENTATION, WHICH LAUNCHED AN AMAZING 25-YEAR RELATIONSHIP. DURING THOSE YEARS, WE WORKED WITH NO LESS THAN FIVE CEOs AND EIGHT ADVERTISING DIRECTORS. ALL OF THEM BECAME GOOD CLIENTS AND G OOD FRIENDS -- A RARE COMBINATION EVERY AGENCY HOPES TO EXPERIENCE.

SUDDENLY, THERE WERE 27 OF US, and we were beginning to feel like a legitimate Agency. New clients were added across diverse categories: Home Furnishings and Construction; Automotive; Leisure and Recreation. Years later, when pressured to “specialize” the agency to only one industry, this early commitment to diverse client partnerships will help reinforce our instinct to stay the course. Doing well in one category always makes you better in another. OUR IDEAS BEGAN TO SHOW UP IN UNSUSPECTING PLACES.

A MILESTONE YEAR. Our first network TV campaign broke for Rappers Sportswear, featuring U.S. Open golf winner Lou Graham. A little-known KY retailer with only 250 stores launched its first TV campaign with Jim Ed Brown — “Who says a dollar won’t buy much anymore? A dollar’s still a dollar at your Dollar General store.” (Fittingly, Jim Ed was from Dollar, Arkansas.) Comdata, the pioneer of credit card processing, asked us to help launch not only their brand – but an entire new form of commerce. And we took another bite of new business with the addition of the Evers family’s Sunbeam Bread.

A YEAR OF INCREASED BUSINESS and rarified air. Our name and identity for the new “Clifftops” mountain community landed us not only the business but first choice of a lot where a new agency retreat would be built. Iconic brands Heaven Hill Distillery, Opryland, Rudy’s Farm and WSM all came our way. And we led all Nashville agencies in ADDY awards – not the first time to do this. And certainly not the last.

WITH A STAFF OF 35, it was time to relocate again. Construction began on what would become Phase 1 of our Hawkins Street location. We also had the pleasure of getting to know Dan Evins and the folks at Cracker Barrel, who were interested in seeing if their 17-store chain could become national. 650 stores and 42 years of continuing partnership later, we’d humbly say the answer is Yes. Our proven ability to deliver RESULTS for banks again landed us AOR duties for the Tennessee Bankers Association and their first-ever statewide TV campaign.

WITH BILLINGS TOPPING $40 MILLION, we were listed for the first time – but not the last – as a Southeast “Hot Agency” by ADWEEK. Buntin Out-of-Home Media (BOOHM) was formed to provide specialized management of outdoor advertising. A satellite PR office was established on Eighth Avenue when we converted Nashville’s oldest car wash (deserted for 6 years) into Buntin PR. Hartmann Luggage, Vanderbilt Medical Center, Beaman Automotive, Standard Candy Company, Bank of Mississippi and Pine Hosiery all joined our client roster. Continuing our work with celebrities, Roger Staubach was chosen as spokesperson for Reemay, appearing in our national TV launch for their landscaping fabric.

THIRD TIME “HOT AGENCY” honors came our way from ADWEEK. The agency led all Southeast agencies in ADDYs. The Bank Marketing Association awarded us “Best of TV” nationally for our continuing Liberty campaign. Add another Clio for our Terlingua, Texas “Chili Cook-Off” promotional kit. And to keep up with the pace of growth, the agency acquired our MU-2P 7-seat prop jet. Keeneland Racetrack named us their agency. Market Street Brewing, Equicor Insurance, Endata call on Buntin PR. And a small farm supply store chain, Tractor Supply, comes to us for a jingle that featured the then-courier for Opryland – a tall, skinny kid with a big voice named… Alan Jackson.
THE BUNTIN CHILI COOK-OFF TEAM COMPETED FOR MANY YEARS IN NATIONAL COMPETITION. A TRIP TO TERLINGUA, TEXAS GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRODUCE OUR “BORDER PATROL CHILI” NEW BUSINESS MAILER AND A NATIONAL CLIO.

WE BEGAN THE NEW CENTURY with deep optimism. Billings approached $80 million, and our partnerships expanded to include 2 new clients that would become extraordinary successes. Building on our initial role as AOR for a bank they had acquired in NC, RBC/Royal Bank of Canada would go on to name us AOR for RBC Wealth Management, RBC Capital Markets, RBC Investor + Treasury Services – all globally – not to mention all of RBC’s U.S. banking. Our work would span 10+ years and place us at the very top of golf marketing across athletes, title sponsorships, as well as with the PGA Tour. Helping the United Methodists reach out to those with a “hole in their soul” would also teach us a whole new dimension of RESULTS, as we not only eclipsed all KPIs for this $25MM effort, but deeply impacted people’s lives, aided the way the world navigated 9/11 and an Anthrax scare, as well as went on to make headlines in the Wall Street Journal and Newsweek and on the airwaves of NPR. (And again, the Agency led all competitors in the ADDYs, with 49 awards and Best of Show honors.)

ANOTHER LEADERSHIP YEAR for creative awards, as the agency bested both Nashville and all Southeast agencies in ADDYs won. And another signature account win in TVA. THE AGENCY CELEBRATED our 30th anniversary by hosting the first-ever Buntin Art Show, themed “The Art of Business.” The show featured work by Buntinites and guest artists, with proceeds going to AdHope. ADWEEK joined us in honoring creative team member Bill Holley, who – at 45 years of service – was arguably the industry’s longest-tenured employee not to own or run their own agency. 2 major outdoor accounts also joined Buntin Out-of-Home Media – Ruby Tuesday and Olive Garden. More and more people who live by their outdoor program turn to BOOHM.

THE AGENCY’S ANNUAL ADHOPE AUCTION, the result of employee bidding for donated items or services, matched $ for $ by the agency, raised a record $7,000. Special thanks to clients, suppliers and our media friends for auction items and the ability to help support our community. Jeffrey Jr. was named EVP + Executive Creative Director. And the agency successfully pitched and won AOR duties for a little-known B:B cleanup company named SERVPRO that, on the wings of our “Like it never even happened” strategy, was about to catch fire as a leading national brand.

JEFFREY JR. LAID OUT A NEW VISION for the Agency, as he took the leadership reins as President. Rooted in a platform called “Brand Fluency,” the vision entailed unlocking the “inner voice” of companies and brands – all in the pursuit of transformative Client RESULTS, as well as excellent Client:Agency culture. Over the next 4 years, the Brand Fluency platform would propel the agency to +66% growth, billings in excess of $100MM and a prestigious Jay Chiat Award for Strategic Planning – one of only nine given the year the agency first entered the show.

THE AGENCY TRAVELED TO AKRON, Ohio to help the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company expand retail sales at its Gemini Dealers across the country. Through a Brand Fluency project focused on women, the Agency opened the eyes of Goodyear senior management as to the “do’s” and “don’ts” of women, tire buying and the retail environment. In other female-driven categories, Friedman’s Jewelers awarded us lead strategy, brand and creative duties with a goal of growing sales across its 420 stores in 23 states.

BASS PRO SHOPS ENLISTED BOOHM with the charge of optimizing their outdoor program for all national locations. The agency answered the call from The Partnership for a Drug-Free America to rally communities in C and D counties to fight back against the ravages of meth. Deemed “the first ever non-traditional communications effort in the war on drugs,” the campaign landed on the cover of ADWEEK, the street corners of small town America, as well as landed us a coveted Jay Chiat Strategic Planning Award, one of several that have come our way since.

THE HOUSING COLLAPSE and deep recession compelled the Agency to put ourselves on “war footing” – a move ultimately helping us post solid financial performance, give raises and bonuses, and hold onto our full team in a time when many other agencies were forced to close their doors. New clients also arrived, with wins for the Tennessee Education Lottery, John Deere Licensed Products, Commonwealth Brands, Breathe America and lead OOH duties for Burger King, working alongside CPB and Wunderman. The agency again led the Nashville ADDYs. We moved up to 135th in the U.S. among all national agencies. And were named among the “HOT 100” fastest growing companies by BusinessTN magazine. IN A YEAR THAT SAW SEVERE FINANCIAL losses across every major industry, our Brand Fluency platform allowed us to seamlessly pivot into the role of Business and Brand Consultants. CEOs and Boards of Directors engaged us not to work on “What is our message” but to help articulate “What is our purpose as an organization?” For many of these executives, a related question was also, “What is my legacy as a leader?” While hard financial times pushed many agency chairs away from the client’s desk, we were actually able to pull ours closer. A move that not only helped us get through these times, but in fact deepen our value to clients. And while it felt almost wrong to pursue awards for our thinking, in some ways it was a year when thinking had never been at such a premium…And so we did. And so we were fortunate to do well, yet again. WE WERE WELL REPRESENTED IN ADDY AWARDS, WITH THE NATIONAL CREATIVE FOR THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH EARNING TOP HONORS, AS WELL AS EARNING JEFFREY JR. “COPYWRITER OF THE YEAR.”

THE 500-YEAR FLOOD BROKE THE RHYTHM, but not the spirit, of our city. In fact, our spirit for big ideas and giving back to our community was elevated to new levels. In partnership with Hands On Nashville, we offered volunteer work and design services for a book commemorating the flood’s heroes – work that earned us HON’s Golden Shovel recognition. Our “It All Adds Up” campaign for the Tennessee Lottery showcased the impact 40+ consecutive-record-sales weeks could have on returns to education. Our partnership with Gaylord Entertainment Company helped re-open the flood-ravaged Gaylord Opryland Resort to a greater future, with remarks by Chairman Colin Reed inspired by our Brand Fluency strategy. And we gave back globally through our “Imagine No Malaria” campaign in partnership with the United Methodist Church, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others. And ADWEEK named us among the “Top U.S. Shops” and the “Top Shop” in Tennessee.

From OOH in London, to print and broadcast in Australia, to digital in Emerging Markets, the agency’s work had ascended to a new stage. Buntin Out-of-Home Media helped Cracker Barrel take the stage in accepting the prestigious OBIE Hall of Fame Award, alongside brands like Nike, Budweiser, Levi’s and Coca-Cola. And, for his achievements, creative success and contributions to the industry, Jeffrey Jr. was awarded the Silver Medal by the AAF.

WE WERE HONORED TO AGAIN BE NAMED “Top Shop in Tennessee” by ADWEEK. Buntin Out-of-Home Media continued to put clients on the map with the unveiling of GeoTrak World.™ We made headlines by taking home 51 ADDY awards, including Best of Show, Art Director of the Year and Copywriter of the Year honors. We again caught the attention of The New York Times, which included our work in an article addressing how social media was re-shaping advertising across genres and channels.

OUR VIDEO CONTENT SERIES for A Life Story Foundation, featuring Pete Frates, helped spark what ultimately became the global ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, not to mention land us in an editorial feature on ESPN and again in the pages of The New York Times. We re-wrote the record books, taking home 74 ADDY Awards – the most in the 50-year history of the competition. The Agency experienced its own re-brand with a strategic move from Brand Fluency to “Everything Speaks.” And we welcomed new clients and national brand leaders, American Born Moonshine, Trex Decking and Savannah Classics.

All the while, dreams and plans began to come to life for the revitalization of a 100-year-old structure that would become our new home in Nashville’s yet-to-be-named “Railyard District.” And somewhere along the way, we welcomed aboard 30 new hires and 10 new clients, all while AdHope closed in on the $1,000,000 mark in donations to our community.

2017 MARKED OUR 45TH YEAR IN BUSINESS with the celebration of, you guessed it, added new business. CITGO, Logan’s Roadhouse, Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, Stillhouse Spirits, plus OOH media assignments from Twitter, State Farm and Honda. We again scored well at the Nashville ADDYs – taking home top creative honors for the 20th straight year. And we were proud to see our “Everything Speaks” philosophy – along with a quote from Jeffrey Jr. – get a shoutout in the pages of The Hero Effect, a book by friend, former client and motivational speaker Kevin Brown.

AS WE BEGAN THE FINAL PHASE OF WORK ON our new HQ, several new clients also joined the agency, anchored by full-service duties for Hoosier Lottery (expanding our prior Media AOR role) and National Media AOR duties for fast casual brand, Tropical Smoothie Café, as they embarked on a plan to eclipse 1,000+ locations. Nashville planned to welcome our new Major League Soccer Club, Nashville SC, with our “Everyone N” launch campaign, which would ultimately help set the record for single game attendance in the history of U.S. professional soccer. Jeffrey, Jr. was elected to the NYC-based National Advertising Review Board (NARB), the governing body that oversees truth in advertising. And again, record dollars were raised for AdHope.

THE AGENCY TRAIN FINALLY ARRIVES at our new station at 230 Willow Street in Nashville’s Railyard District – a name we coined and began immediately teaching Google to use in its algorithm. Excitement for our new 100-year-old home could not have been greater – with a fully modernized re-expression of space originally built in 1920. The metaphors between the transformative power of traveling by train, keeping the trains running, and the “challenger” TN Central Railway staking its place vs. the larger rail lines of its day – all unique stories that align with the agency’s renewed “spike in the ground” commitment to IDEAS. Dave Damman, the Agency’s new Co-President + Chief Creative Officer, arrives to help usher in this new era, all as the Agency set records for billings and revenue, eclipsing the $200MM mark.

A TERM OFTEN USED FOR PERFECT VISION brought a year we hope never to see the likes of again. The global Covid-19 pandemic, the killing of George Floyd, social injustice and untold U.S. political embarrassments – all splintering our society and workforce to levels unrivaled in modern history. Fortunately, our tech infrastructure and IT/Operations staff were up to the challenge, enabling us to successfully work in a remote model for over a year. And through this, our performance, recognition and wins continued. 2 OBIE awards for Stillhouse Spirits and Nashville SC. 2 national brand wins in Aaron’s® and Cabinets To Go. We created the #OUTPOUR campaign honoring the nation’s healthcare workers, which, with the support of our friends at Lamar and across the OOH industry, was ultimately posted across the country and in Times Square. And, not least, we were proud to beat our prior year revenues, retain our full staff, and pay salary increases and staffwide bonuses – something no other agency we know of was able to do.

FUELED BY THE “GREAT RESIGNATION,” multiple team members chose to leave the agency for other pursuits. For every person who left, someone new joined who was deeply invested in the agency’s vision for the future. “Building Brand Conviction in a World That Too Often Stops at Brand Attention.” And wrapping it all up was a “new suit” to dress our new spirit. The result? Our first-ever year in excess of $20MM in revenues, continued leadership locally and regionally at the ADDYs, and a return to physically working together in unified collaboration. And, if this wasn’t enough, BOOHM entered into a joint venture partnership with global OOH leader Talon, as the two entities merged to form Talon Buntin America, with a vision of disrupting the OOH marketplace. And last, an endowment was established in partnership with Belmont University called the Jeffrey Buntin Sr. Award for Creative Ventures, which would help fund the pursuits of those students graduating with studies in both business and the arts.
