IN THE GARDEN Spring
Plant spuds for Christmas, harvest rain, grow berries and blooms, plus bring the ‘ladies’ to the yard!
Attract beneficial insects like ladybirds and lacewings to your garden by planting calendula, cosmos and sweet alyssum, plus flowering herbs such as dill and fennel.
Make the most of spring rain by installing a rainwater harvesting system. This can be as simple as connecting a water diverter to a downpipe leading to a barrel or small tank.
Dahlias are darling in garden beds, but they also grow well in pots. Plant tubers in containers at least 200mm wide with good drainage and stake tall varieties.
Homegrown spuds on your Christmas menu? Plant seed potatoes in compostenriched soil after the
last frost. Choose early season varieties such as ‘Rocket’ or ‘Jersey Bennes’, and use a grow bag or plant in a trench 10-20cm deep. Space 30cm apart with 70cm between rows. Cover shoots with soil to encourage them to grow upwards.
Grow strawberries in beds, pots or hanging baskets.
Strawberries can be planted in spring until November, but the earlier the better. Grow in a sunny spot in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, add a layer of mulch and water regularly. Protect fruit with bird netting.
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

IN THE FAMILY
Supporting act
This vege trio grows well together, with each offering its own benefits.
Sweet corn
When soil temps reach 16-20°C, plant 50-60cm apart in soil that’s enriched with well-rotted compost. Place in a square formation to help with pollination.
Beans
Once a sweet corn seedling has grown to 30cm, plant two or three bean seeds around the base. Prolific runner varieties may need extra staking or trellis support.
Pumpkin
As the beans start to germinate, plant one pumpkin per square metre (large varieties need even more space). Water well and remove any leaves infected by powdery mildew.
GARDEN MUST-HAVE
Turn kitchen scraps into garden gold that then helps enrich your soil. This durable, lightweight bin is easy to install, with bottom panels for retrieving all that rich compost. ●

SEA CHANGE
Mediterranean style is a key spring trend. Make it local by combining fresh whites with timber and terracotta, spliced with lush, verdant plantings. Grasses, ponga or tree ferns grow well in pots and the flowers of bird of paradise, red-hot pokers and aloe add bright splashes of orange.
Pacific flavours
Welcome spring with some tropical styling updates and bring instant warmth to your outdoor spaces.

UMBRELLA PLANTER
Create a base for a market umbrella using a bucket, PVC pipe and concrete, then place it in a large decorative pot and plant it up with living colour.
1 Measure and mark 350mm from the end of a 50mm PVC pipe and cut using a hacksaw. Cover the cut end of the pipe piece with a thick plastic bag and secure with tape.
2 Pour 2L water into a 20L plastic bucket. Submerge the covered end of the pipe piece in the water, and enlist a second pair of hands to position and hold the pipe in the centre of the bucket.
3 Wearing a mask, eye protection and gloves, and working in a well-ventilated
area, add quick-set concrete to the water according to the manufacturer’s instructions, stirring with a rod and adding extra water if required. Make sure the pipe is plumb and centred, then allow the concrete to set.
4 Place an even layer of pebbles in the base of a large outdoor plant pot. Position the bucket centred on top of the pebbles, making sure it sits level. Tip: The pebbles aid drainage, preventing the plants becoming waterlogged.
5 Part-fill the pot with potting mix, add plants and fill with more mix, pressing it down firmly to prevent air pockets. Keep the soil level below the top of the pipe to prevent soil falling in. Water in well, then insert the umbrella pole into the pipe.

BRIGHT IDEAS
It’s the little details that transform a basic barbecue into a spring celebration. Decorate an outdoor table with tropical touches such as DIY hibiscus placemats and place cards made of homegrown lemons and olive leaves. Bench seating will keep the mood casual and also comes in handy if you need to squeeze in a few more guests.
Keep potted culinary herbs close to hand for the barbecue cook.
Pin name tags to takehome place settings using decorative toothpicks.

■ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setting up and using your barbecue, position on a flat and clear, well-ventilated space outdoors and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.

■ Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during restrictions such as fire bans.
■ Keep children and pets away from barbecues and gas cylinders, and put matches and lighters out of children’s reach.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE
Use premade shelving, preprimed VJ-look panels, trim, cube units and paint for a result that looks completely bespoke!
1 Assemble two 2 x 2 cube units according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Measure from the skirting board to the top of the door frame. Use this measurement and the width of an assembled cube (760mm) to calculate the size of the wall panelling, using the manufacturer’s instructions regarding expansion allowances. Mark the VJ wall lining and cut two panels to size using a circular saw with a straightedge.
2 Install VJ panels according to the manufacturer’s instructions, fill nail holes with wood filler, let dry, then sand smooth. Mask around VJ panels with painter’s tape then, using a medium paintbrush, apply two coats of interior acrylic paint, allowing to dry after each coat.
3 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, install two 1200mm floating shelves centred and flush with the top of the doorframe.
4 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, assemble two 760mm coat shelves and install at your preferred height on the VJ panels.
5 Measure from the skirting boards to the floating shelves, add 18mm, mark and cut two lengths of preprimed 18mm quad pine with mitred top ends. Measure the small spaces either side of the floating shelves at the top of the VJ panels, add 18mm, mark and cut two more pieces of quad pine with mitred outside ends. Sand cut ends and predrill nail holes at intervals using a 1mm bit.
6 Allowing for expansion, install quad pine against outside edges of the VJ panels using 40mm bullet head nails. Use a nail punch to recess heads, fill nail holes with wood filler, let dry, then sand smooth. Mask around quad pine with painter’s tape then, using a small paintbrush, apply two coats of interior acrylic paint to pine, allowing to dry after each coat. Position cube units and add inserts.

KITCHEN SPECIAL
All the ingredients you need to cook up a dreamy new kitchen!
Coastal calm STYLE RESET
As the saying goes, nature does it better. So it’s no surprise that we tend to lean towards colours and textures drawn from the environment. For those planning a kitchen renovation, these influences, along with practical choices around form and function, are the starting point to create an on-trend, timeless result.
Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright says this trend marks a shift away from minimalism. ”It embraces warmth, tactility and emotional connection,” she explains. “Rooted in the natural world, this palette captures the growing desire for homes that restore and soothe.”
AN EXCITING NEW PALETTE
It’s a shift that’s reflected by the newest Kaboodle Kitchen colour suite of six inviting and calming colours: Cannellini, Juniper, Saltbush, Truffle Oak, Pistachio and Oyster. “These draw from the broader interior design movement towards nature-inspired neutrals that define kitchen trends for 2025-26,” says Jane.
The beauty of hues inspired by the natural world is how translatable they are to any style of kitchen. “Earthy tones like Truffle Oak, Oyster and Cannellini highlight the organic appeal of timber and stone – tones that feel both contemporary and timeless,” says Jane. The greens and blues of Pistachio, Saltbush and Juniper reference coastal foliage, forest canopies and vast oceans. “These elevated neutrals deepen the kitchen’s emotional resonance while maintaining visual calm,” she says. And when nature-inspired hues are paired with natural benchtop materials like timber and stone, the result is an inviting kitchen with enduring good looks.

Take beachy style to another level with Cannellini, a soft beige given new life with textural finishes, touches of timber and complementary hits of gold.
PRACTICAL AND PRETTY
To make good use of space in a compact room, try the galley layout, or a single run of cabinetry plus an island – as in this kitchen, where timeless beige creates a sense of warmth and light. “We’ve showcased this neutral through a crisp V-groove profile, complemented by the textured, stone-look travertine benchtop for subtle depth and character,” explains John Harrison, marketing manager at Kaboodle Kitchen. “Amber gold handles bring a touch of warmth and elegance, enhancing the coastal-inspired style.”
DESIGN IDEAS
The solid timber wall fixture is an important visual feature and plays a functional role, too, concealing the rangehood. The raw timber is a warm, textural inclusion, breaking up the run of overhead cabinets to create interest and a visual break.

Colour burst
The rich blue of Juniper brings personality plus to this open-plan, single-line kitchen, which features all the necessities without compromising on space or style.
CREATE THE PERFECT CANVAS
When you can’t hide the kitchen, make it a feature with an audacious colour choice, as in this single-line design – a layout that’s ideal in apartments, small spaces or open-plan living zones. “This blue kitchen makes a bold yet balanced statement, with Juniper doors and panels paired with a tonal blue splashback for a layered, cohesive look,” says John Harrison. Handle-free wall cabinetry and a concealed rangehood reduce visual clutter and let the colour shine, while a handy shallow shelf for cookbooks breaks the line of overheads. A round table is a stylish and space-saving counterpoint to the cabinetry lines, with pink chairs to offset the blue.

Green goals
The traditional farmhouse look is given a 21st-century update with Saltbush, an elegant forest green, while extra impact is delivered by a characterful V-groove profile.
DESIGN IDEAS
A U-shaped layout delivers lots of storage but overhead cabinetry on all sides could make the room feel closed in. Open shelving solves the problem and brings in another textural element. A farmhouse table rather than built-in island also helps with the open feel.

Bold colour is a great choice in a large, light-filled space, as in this U-shaped kitchen where intense green cabinetry is the hero, complemented by stone-look benchtops in Biancoccino. “The striking veining introduces texture and depth,” says John Harrison. “Matte black hardware, featuring two styles of Turbo handles and Iza doorknobs, adds an extra layer of personality and contrast, enhancing the rustic yet refined aesthetic.” A freestanding cooker and complementary rangehood are perfect picks for modern farmhouse style.
Stylish country colours and timber accents create a warm and welcoming effect.
Modern moves
Pale benchtops and an open splashback lighten the impact of the luxuriously intense woodgrain of Truffle Oak, bringing warmth and character to this contemporary space.
BALANCED ELEGANCE
Deep, earthy hues throughout provide drama in this island kitchen.
“The dark, textured woodgrain pairs elegantly with the light, stone-look Salt Pan benchtops, creating a balanced and refined palette,” says John Harrison. If you have the space for it, temper the boldness of dark cabinetry with a spacious splashback and minimal shelving to channel the clean lines of Japandi style.
“Removing the wall cabinets offers a visual break from the depth of the timber, while natural tiles add a fresh, classic touch,” explains John. Within the island, areas of open shelving lend a lighter feel while retaining a functional edge. Dark handles have the effect of receding, reducing visual clutter for a cleaner look.

FRESH AND BRIGHT
This kitchen refresh is the perfect case study for a restrained, neutral palette, with cabinetry in warm Oak Latte teamed with the creamy look of Kaboodle Kitchen’s Salt Pan benchtop. “The colour scheme reflects the broader trend of the New Neutrals – a layered approach to colour and material that supports the modern kitchen as a place of connection, nourishment and quiet retreat,” says Jane Wright. Brushed nickel handles and tapware complete the look and the L-shape of the layout allows entry into the space at both ends.

The trend for kitchens in 2025-26 includes a strong focus on concealed functionality, says Jane Wright. “Integrated appliances and pull-out features not only streamline the look of the space but also elevate practicality – allowing design and materiality to take centre stage,” she says. The smart storage solutions in this kitchen include pull-out pantry shelving, a rotating two-tier corner unit, an integrated side-mount bin system and compact two-tier pull-out shelves – not forgetting the display opportunity that comes with the open shelving, where form beautifully meets function. ●

Sometimes less is more in a bathroom. By removing a built-in bath and towel cupboard, Sam opened up the possibilities in the room, transforming it into an airy and practical sanctuary.
The judges were amazed by the transformation, which included changing the dated colour scheme from apricot and gold to black and white, and moving the position of the shower and toilet. Sam had his work cut out for him with this project; water damage meant the GIB and subfloor had to be replaced, but this also allowed plumbers to reposition the pipework.

When choosing the perfect neutral paint colour, sometimes one shade just won’t do. Adding dreamy cream tones in her 1936 home, Jing used a biscuit hue and a cream with a green undertone to create a limewashed effect in her lounge. “I used this paint technique to create

To add further dimension, she used wood glue and a brad nailer to attach Hume Pine mouldings to the walls, to create wainscoting.

“With this project, I wanted to become more self-sufficient and save water,” says Brad, a busy father of two. “I also wanted to teach my daughters where their food comes from, and needed a space to start seedlings for our garden beds.”
To bring his vision to life, Brad repurposed old pergola framing and upcycled windows to construct the greenhouse. Inside, he built wicking planters using pond liner, agricultural pipe and weed mat, all connected to a downpipe which catches rainwater for the plant beds. ●

SPRING GARDEN PLANNER
There is lots to do as your patch wakes from its long winter sleep.
Words Adam Woodhams
The most fabulous season of the gardening year is here! Spring is an exciting time of jubilant renewal, as plants from the smallest annuals to the tallest trees burst into bloom and throw out vigorous new growth. Even non-gardeners can be smitten, letting out the occasional ‘wow!’ at this wonderful show. For those with green thumbs, it’s an inspiring and satisfying time when they reap the rewards of all the care they’ve lavished on their plants and gardens. Follow our weekend planning guide to keep your little piece of paradise looking awesome through spring and in tiptop shape for summer.
Kick off your garden glow-up with a good clean and tidy.
All that growth after a winter hiatus means fertilising is a priority.
■ With the arrival of spring, your plants and lawn will be chewing through their stored energy – so now is a good time to top up the tank. For hassle-free feeding, apply a controlledrelease fertiliser that will provide a steady supply of nutrients. These come in a
range of blends formulated as either ‘all purpose,’ or for different plant types such as ornamentals, citrus and vegetables.
■ For the lawn, use a hose-on or granular fertiliser, ensuring you choose a product that’s suitable for your grass type.
■ It’s important to pay attention to what goes on beneath the surface, too. Microorganisms in the soil convert the nutrients from fertilisers, enabling plants to feed more efficiently. An application of an organic fertiliser such as manure or compost, plus mulch to help retain moisture, will give those soil workers a boost.
WEEKEND
Renovate the vegetable patch and give the yard a spring-clean.
■ If you’ve been holding on to the last of your winter vegetables, it’s time to get ruthless and pull them out. Then improve the soil to suit your new crops by forking through appropriate composts or manures, water well and leave to sit for a week before you start planting.
■ Get busy tidying. Post winter, you’ll find there can be all manner of jobs to be done. Remove leaves and fallen twigs and branches from garden areas and give paths, patios, decks and
■ To give your soil a kickstart, apply a seaweed or liquid compost formula that will increase beneficial bacteria populations. Healthy, biologically active soil can also help to reduce runoff of nutrients into surrounding waterways.
Keep in mind
■ Wear gloves and a mask when handling mulch, compost and potting mix and also when pruning, along with long sleeves, as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and cause allergic reactions.
■ After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.
■ Take care when selecting plants as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your region, as some may be classified as weeds in certain areas.
■ Store garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.
driveways a pressure wash if they’ve become mucky and slippery over winter. Remember to dial down the pressure on treated pine decks.
■ Give the lawn a goingover. Chances are your grass is looking a wee bit scruffy after winter. Be vigorous with a steel spring tine lawn rake to pull out any dead material.
■ Deadhead flowers as they finish. This will keep the garden looking neat and, in many cases, bring on a second flush of flowers.

THE POTTED KITCHEN GARDEN
Many traditional garden vegetables can be grown in pots, even the tallest of tomatoes. Follow these tips for a thriving kitchen garden.
● Ensure pots are a suitable size for the mature plants. They need to be big enough not to become topheavy when the plant is fully grown.
● Use a good quality potting mix – special blends for vegetables and herbs are available, as well as organically certified options.
● Group plants with similar needs in one container. For example, leafy crops such as lettuce and spinach grow best with reliable moisture and regular
feeding. If in doubt, check their labels or seed packets.
● Grow climbing veges in larger containers or pots. Securely position a wire trellis or fan in the pot before planting.
● Tomatoes are an ideal choice for growing in pots, and range from vine or climbing, dwarf or bush varieties to tumbling forms for hanging baskets. But bear in mind that most tomatoes require some support as they grow.
● Regular liquid feeding is a must for containergrown herbs and veges. Choose a formula that is nutrient-rich and full of beneficial microorganisms to bring potting mix to life.
CONCENTRATE MAKES UP TO
WEEKEND
water. Avoid wetting flowers, as this can lead to fungal problems and an early loss of blooms.
Start planting edibles and introduce some colour for new-season wow.
■ An economical way to grow vegetables and herbs is from seed. Check the packet for instructions, as many can be sown directly into garden beds.
■ If starting seed in containers, sow in a quality seed-raising mix in small pots or, to make life easier and reduce the risk of transplant shock, use
biodegradable peat pots. With these, you can plant the entire pot once your seedlings are ready to go into the ground.
■ Add a splash of colour. Many gorgeous flowers are easy to grow from seed. You’ll be improving your vege harvest, too, as flowers attract pollinators that will visit the blooms on your food plants, increasing the fruiting rates.
■ Beyond the seed aisle, be inspired by the range of plants now in store and introduce new colour plus interest to the garden. Look out for flowering beauties such as azaleas and rhododendrons, or fruiting favourites including citrus and passionfruit.
Water well and wisely, make the most of mulch and plant out tomatoes.
■ The ground can be slow to dry over winter, but this can change quickly come spring. Adjust watering patterns to suit, but first check soil conditions.
■ When hand-watering, focus on the plants, not entire beds, to help save
■ With the summer months approaching, add or top up mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health. Give plants an extra boost and spread manure or compost first, then mulch (see ‘Mulch musts’, below).
■ When soil temperatures reach 20°C, plant tomato seedlings in soil that’s rich in organic matter. Stake vine varieties, apply mulch and water well. Use a tomato fertiliser every two to four weeks, and remove side shoots to help the plant put energy into fruit growth. ●
MULCH MUSTS
Mulch has many incredible benefits. It conserves soil moisture and helps keep soil temperatures more consistent, and reduces and slows water runoff, which reduces soil erosion. Plus, it adds nutrients and organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Here’s how to make the most of this invaluable extra layer!
● Always water well before and after spreading mulch.
● In areas where weeds have been a problem, place newspaper (six to eight pages thick) or
cardboard over the ground and wet it well before spreading mulch.
● Aim for a mulch depth of about 5cm in vege and flower beds and at least 5cm clear of plant stems to prevent rot.
● Mulch a new vegetable or flower bed before you plant it, then pull the mulch back to create planting holes – it’s easier than trying to mulch around tiny seedlings.
Tip: Applying mulch after you spread pungent pelletised fertilisers can help block the smell.

TIMELESS TIMBER
For longevity and natural good looks, choose classic Kwila decking from SpecRite.
Adeck is a long-term investment, so you want one that will stand the test of time. There are many new products and technologies available, but for timeless beauty, durability and value, one material stands out – Kwila timber.
Built to last
Kwila is known for its exceptional stability and comes with less risk of structural issues, keeping your deck functional for years to come. Constant exposure to the elements can cause other types of timbers to warp, cup or split, but Kwila is ideal for New Zealand’s climate. It is rated Class 1 above ground for durability, meaning it can last over 40 years with the right maintenance. Its natural resistance to rot, decay, termites and fungi ensures superior performance compared to many other decking materials. When properly installed and maintained, your Kwila deck can remain sturdy, reliable, and beautiful for decades to come. And it’s rated BAL 29 for bushfire resistance, meaning it can be used in areas susceptible to bushfires. Follow guidance from your relevant building authority to ensure full compliance.
Naturally versatile
One of timber’s greatest strengths is its versatility – and with Kwila, the possibilities are endless. The SpecRite range of Kwila products for outdoor use includes decking, screening, balustrades and posts. Unlike composite alternatives that expand and contract across the length of the board, Kwila expands and contracts across its width, meaning fully flexible design possibilities without
the need to incorporate breaker boards every few metres. Whether you’re building a deck, enhancing privacy or adding bespoke style to your garden, Kwila offers a harmonious way to bring it all together with timeless style and warmth.
Sustainably sourced
Choosing Kwila doesn’t mean sacrificing sustainability. SpecRite Kwila is FSC® certified, supporting responsible forestry practices. The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a positive force for change that supports biodiversity and climate resilience. When you choose FSC-certified products, you’re helping to take care of forests for future generations.
Warm-hued SpecRite Kwila decking is available pre-oiled, to give extra protection against the elements.
Extra protection
To ensure your deck starts strong, SpecRite Kwila is now available pre-oiled with a Feast Watson coating that’s compatible with both oil- and water-based finishes. This treatment helps seal the timber against moisture and UV exposure, providing an added layer of protection to all sides of your timber before you apply a final topcoat. It’s a smart way to set up your deck for a great finish. Maintenance of your Kwila deck is simple – when your deck shows signs of wear, scrub it down with a decking cleaner and a stiff-bristle brush. Once
dry, apply one or two coats of your chosen finish and you’re all set.
Tried and tested
Kwila has been a trusted timber decking choice for generations of New Zealanders. It’s a tried and tested material that remains popular for its strength, beauty and longevity. Kwila doesn’t cause static shock or overheat like some alternative decking materials. And with its warm, rich tones, Kwila continues to captivate homeowners and designers alike — providing a stylish, naturally sophisticated look that’s hard to beat.

How to maintain your deck
Take regular care of your alfresco timber flooring to keep it looking good.
Give the deck an annual spruce-up ahead of the entertaining season.
Slipping, splinters and tripping over loose boards could all ruin a perfectly good evening on your deck, so it’s important to keep it in good shape. Plus, of course, a damaged deck could mean it has lost structural integrity and may be in need of urgent repair. Maintaining your deck is essential to uphold its appearance and durability, so for a trouble-free deck, commit to a regular annual routine. Here’s how.
DO A DECK CHECK
Start with a thorough inspection, including the supports and joists underneath, looking for any decay or signs of insect damage. Check for damaged or rotten boards, loose nails or screws. If you do find any damaged boards, replace them with new ones or repair them using suitable fillers. Tighten or replace any loose nails or screws. Make sure to include the railing in your overview. Check if it is loose or showing signs of wear, and repair or replace it. If any renovations are beyond your DIY skills, call in the professionals.
CLEAN THE SURFACE
Switch to clean and protect mode, says carpenter Thomas Taylor. “Generally, I look out for a build-up of moss and algae – this tells me it’s time to clean and recoat,” he says. “Or, splash some water on the surface. If it absorbs quickly, it’s time to oil your deck.”
Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule is critical. This will help prevent dust, dirt and algae building up and making the deck slippery. Sweep the deck surface regularly to remove loose debris. Then mix a purpose-made deck cleaner, such as Cabot’s ‘Deck Clean’, with water as per the manufacturer’s instructions and scrub the deck using a brush to remove dirt, mould and stains. Rinse thoroughly with a hose or pressure washer – taking care not to apply too much pressure to avoid damaging the timber – and let it dry completely.
“I always try to clean and oil a deck on an overcast day, as the sun can affect how the oil dries onto the timber, making it look patchy”
Thomas Taylor/carpenter
BUFF UP THE BOARDS
If your deck hasn’t been maintained for a while, or you want a complete change of finish, you may need to get out the sander. Focus on areas with splintered timber or previous finishes. However, if it’s in good condition and you’re recoating with the same product, you can often skip this step.
PICK YOUR PRODUCT
The main coatings – oil and stain – each give a different finish. Chatting to a Bunnings in-store expert can help
you work out which product is best for you. Decking oil contains a small amount of pigment, explains Merridy Leonard of Cabot’s. It is designed to enhance the timber’s natural colour without hiding the grain. “A deck and exterior stain contains more pigment and is designed to change the colour of your timber,” she says.
OIL VS WATER
Timber oils and stains are either water- or oil-based, but how to decide which one is right for
A light-coloured stain allows the wood grain to show through for a warm timber finish.
you? “Water-based decking oils and stains both work by building a barrier on the surface to protect the timber from UV rays,” explains Merridy Leonard. “They’re more durable and generally have faster recoat times than oil-based products.”
In contrast, Merridy says oil-based decking oils and stains penetrate into the timber, leaving very little on the surface. They’re also a little less user-friendly, requiring regular maintenance, longer dry times and turps for clean-up. However, oil-based ones provide a more natural finish and offer excellent water repellency. If your deck receives ample sunlight and is prone to water exposure, an oil-based option may be more suitable.
APPLY THE COATING
Once you’ve made your choice and done your prep, it’s time to hit the deck! Mask off any areas you don’t want coated in oil or stain, such as the walls of the house or a fence. Decant the finish into a decking bucket and use the recommended applicator for the product. Follow the grain of the timber, applying the product to two to four deck boards at a time. Allow to dry for the recommended time, then apply a second coat. Make sure you allow plenty of time for the finish to dry before walking on it. Job done! ●

Guinea pigs are cute, clever and cuddly, and they’re the source of lots of fun facts.
LEAD THE WAY!
The jingle of a dog leash and the sound of the word “walkies” will likely spark joy in the heart of your dog. Choosing the right leash or lead will help make the walking experience easier and more fun for you and your pooch. Choose a lead appropriate for the size and breed of your dog. To maintain control of a large dog like a Labrador, choose a leash that is long and made of thick material with a good handle, while toy breeds need a short lead that doesn’t drag on the ground when the dog heels. Short-nosed breeds such as pugs, or dogs that tend to excessively pull, might be suited to a lead clipped to a harness. Training leads are great for puppies – these are longer and used for teaching recall in open, secure spaces while allowing you to maintain control. Retractable leashes allow dogs to sniff and explore while on walks, but use them with caution in crowded areas or near traffic.
● Guinea pigs are not from Guinea in Africa (they originated in the Andes) and they’re not pigs. They are cavies, which is a type of South American rodent.
Ick warning: they produce poo, and eat one of them for extra vitamins. This helps to prevent digestive tract diseases.
This pooch, named after a rugby legend, prefers running after cats rather than balls.

GOLDEN YEARS
Follow these tips to give your senior pet the royal treatment they deserve, and help them continue to live their best life.
Have you noticed your furry family member is less sprightly than they used to be? It could be time to reconsider your approach to caring for your older dog or cat, says veterinarian Jess Beer from Ellerslie Veterinary Clinic and founder of Kiwi Vet Behaviour. Dr Beer advises that small- to medium-sized dogs are considered seniors at the age of 12, while giant-breed dogs like Bernese Mountain Dogs or Great Danes are regarded as seniors from the age of 10, and cats from the age of 13. At this stage of their life, you might need to begin making a few changes to keep them happy and healthy. Here’s how.
CONSIDER THEIR DIET
As pets enter their golden years, their dietary needs change. Most senior pet food formulations have lower kilojoules to account for a slower metabolism and reduce the risk of excessive weight gain, which can exacerbate age-related illnesses and joint pain. Senior diets also contain slightly different nutrients and extra supplements for healthy ageing. It’s
also important to maintain your pet’s teeth as they get older, says Dr Beer. “Avoid lower-quality foods or those that are mostly wet, as animals need a varied texture. Firmer foods such as crunchy biscuits are good for teeth, as are dental sticks. The gold standard is brushing your pet’s teeth with a pet toothpaste,” she says.
KEEP THEM ACTIVE
Exercise is another aspect of pet care that may need modification – although remember that physical and mental exercise is still important. “Dogs slow down, so walk at their pace and remember it’s not fair to force your own exercise requirements onto an older dog,” says Dr Beer. If the dog stops and sits down on your walk, you probably needed to end the walk five minutes ago, she adds. For gentle exercise with added interest, consider ‘sniff walks’, where you have the dog on a long lead and let them wander and sniff anywhere they want.
Ensure your older pet gets plenty of mental stimulation, too, through enrichment activities. As well as sniff

walks, you could try training exercises, wrapping treats in a towel or puzzle toys, suggests Dr Beer.
UPGRADE THE HOME
Addressing mobility issues as they appear can help your pet be healthier and comfortable for longer. Some home adjustments might include introducing steps or ramps, lowered litter trays and elevated food bowls. Upgrading your pet’s bed can help as well – plush bedding will be softer on arthritic joints and provide extra insulation. When it’s cold, a heat mat can make a difference, too. “Your pet’s joints will feel stiffer in winter, so heat mats are good, especially for cats,” advises Dr Beer.
Senior pets also need extra attention in the warmer months. “In summer, make sure they have access to lots of water and maintain grooming, especially on breeds with thicker coats,” says Dr Beer. Remember, there’s no substitute for veterinary advice. “We recommend older pets get regular senior wellness checks with their vet,” she says.

Project Joseph Visser
1
PREP THE TIMBER
Use a tape measure and pencil to measure and mark timber and a circular saw to cut a 1300mm x 400mm x 26mm panel, or have it cut in store. Using an orbital sander, sand all faces of the panel with abrasive paper – start with 180-grit, then do another pass using 240-grit paper. Use 240-grit paper and a sanding block to smooth all edges of the panel, then wipe away dust.
2
STAIN THE PANEL
Apply a coat of stain and varnish to all faces of the panel using a paintbrush or mini roller, leaving to dry and lightly sanding with 320-grit paper. Wipe away dust, then apply a second coat and leave to dry.
3
ATTACH THE HINGES
On the underside of the panel, measure and mark 200mm in from both ends. Position the brackets on the marked locations and check for square. Mark the screw holes and predrill with a 3mm bit, making sure not to drill all the way through the timber. Attach the brackets using 20mm timber screws.
4 WALL-MOUNT THE BENCH
Keep in mind
■ Work in a well-ventilated area and wear the recommended safety gear when sanding and staining timber and using power tools.
■ Brackets should only be attached to wall studs on plasterboard walls, or to brickwork/masonry (not mortar or grouting).
■ Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional.
■ The workbench is designed to hold up to 45kg, but do not climb, stand or sit on it.
■ Keep all stain and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
Using a tape measure, square and spirit level, mark a horizontal line on the wall at a comfortable height for your bench (900-1000mm is standard). Mark hinge locations on the wall. Attach the bench with fixings suitable for your wall type, and rated to take the weight of the bench plus tools and equipment. ●

1 Put the printed paper image on a cutting mat, lay a clear plastic sheet on top and trace the design with a permanent marker.
STEP 4: REMOVE
2 To create a stencil, on a cutting mat, use a sharp craft knife to carefully cut out the traced design on the plastic sheet.
STEP 5: PAINT
STEP 3: STENCIL
3 Working on a drop cloth, centre the stencil on a round cork mat, then apply a coat of paint to the design.
STEP 6: SEAL
4 While the paint is still tacky, lift the stencil off the cork mat, being careful not to smudge the design. Leave to dry.
5 Use an artist’s paintbrush to outline the border of the cork placemat in paint, then leave to dry.
6 Spray the cork placemat with clear gloss sealer in smooth, even strokes. Apply 2-3 coats, leaving to dry after each. ●

THE PATH TO A LUSHER LAWN
We’ve lined up the tools you need to get your grass looking green and gorgeous.
Words Mitchell Mclean
The sensation of a healthy stretch of grass beneath your feet is one of the great joys of the warmer months. Follow our guidelines to ensure your lawn is in tiptop condition in time for the entertaining season ahead.
To achieve a smooth line, maintain a steady pace when using an edger
LAWN SPREADER
There’s no time like spring to give the grass a boost with a dose of lawn fertiliser. For granular formulations, a spreader makes the job clean and simple as well as ensuring even application of the product across the ground. A spreader also comes in handy for sowing grass seed over any bare patches in need of repair.
WEED PULLER
If neglected, weeds can spread rapidly across any lawn. A weed puller is a chemical-free way to get rid of these unwanted invaders by uprooting them at their source. And the task doesn’t have to be backbreaking – models with an extension handle eliminate the need for you to bend over.
LINE TRIMMER
Also known as a whipper snipper or string trimmer, a line trimmer is a great tool for clearing growth that you can’t get to with the lawn mower. It’s handy for neatening up areas around trees and along fence lines and edges, and to give your lawn area a tidy and wellmaintained appearance.
GOOD SAVE!
To enjoy a healthy lawn, especially in spring and summer, water deeply and sparingly to promote root growth and reduce water waste. Use sprinklers or adjustable hose nozzles suited to your lawn’s size and design, and minimise evaporation by avoiding watering during the hottest part of the day. Instead, do it in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler, allowing water to penetrate into the soil. Always check with your local authority if watering restrictions apply in your area.
SOIL AERATOR
Over time, soil compaction can impede the uptake of nutrients and water, resulting in dwindling grass growth. Aerators solve this problem and revitalise your lawn from the ground up by creating holes in the soil that let oxygen, water and nutrients reach deep into the root zone, plus it’s a satisfying job!
Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.
While it might seem lo-fi, a rake is an incredibly useful lawn-care tool. Use one to clear leaves, thatch and debris so that all-important sunshine can reach your grass. Choose from a range of rake types to meet your particular requirements, such as dethatching or spring cleaning.
A pair of grass shears provides unparalleled control for trimming with precision around delicate plants or garden features. Their small size and portability make them the perfect go-to tool for tidying stray growth and making edges appear flawless.
Knowing the pH of your soil is key to keeping your grass growing in the best possible conditions. A pH tester provides you with useful information about the chemistry – alkalinity or acidity –of your soil, so you can treat your lawn appropriately.
Test the soil
Check for pH, moisture and light
Clean, crisp and welldefined edges make a big difference when improving the overall look of your garden. An edger adds a polished touch by creating a neat line between areas of lawn and features such as driveways, flowerbeds and garden paths. ●

Common scents
Try
these flowering plants that are prized for their wonderful fragrance.
TARATA/LEMONWOOD (Pittosporum eugenioides)
This easy-care New Zealand native gets its name from its lemon-scented leaves, but the butter-coloured flowers also have a sweet honey-like fragrance. Fastgrowing, it is ideal for hedging or screening and can reach heights of 12 metres. Plant in free-draining soil in full sun to part shade. Once established, it’s tolerant of most conditions, including drought.
GARDENIA (Gardenia jasminoides)
Fragrant waxy white flowers are the trademark of this evergreen shrub. There are many varieties, including the dwarf ‘Radicans’ and popular hedging shrub ‘Professor Pucci’. They like a sunny to partly shaded position that’s sheltered from frost and hot afternoon sun. Apply organic matter before planting and feed during spring and summer with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants.
DAPHNE (Daphne spp.)
This perfumed star is prized for its sweet/spicy scented pink or white blooms. Plant in a spot with morning sun or dappled shade (full sun can scorch the leaves) in free-draining acidic soil that’s rich in organic matter. Bear in mind that it hates getting wet ‘feet’, so avoid overwatering and layer mulch away from the stem.
MEXICAN ORANGE BLOSSOM (Choisya ternata)
Also known as Choisya, this verdant shrub bears masses of white flowers in spring and summer with a citrusblossom scent. Plant in full sun to part shade in freedraining soil, and water slowly and frequently while the plant is establishing. The shrub has striking three-part leaves and can grow up to two metres. Trim after the first bloom of flowers to promote a second flush in autumn. ●
Daphne Bring indoors – its blooms last up to two weeks in a vase.
Gardenias Plant in pots by a patio to enjoy their perfume
Tarata/Lemonwood (variegated) Blooms densely in spring.
Mexican orange blossom A popular choice for hedging or screening.
Gardenia This fragrant favourite needs acidic soil to thrive.
Daphne Fills the air with a beautiful aroma from late winter.
