Dear Bougieites,
As I write to you again, I have to admit there is a thrill coursing through my being as word meets word. So yes, consider me thrilled to welcome you to the October edition of the Buk'd and Bougie Newsletter.
Last month, we took a heartfelt stroll through "The JourneyWalking Through Untold Stories". Together, we explored stories of courage, resilience, and personal triumph. Each story reminded us of the beauty in authentic storytelling, and I can’t thank you enough for coming along for that ride.
This October, we are taking things a step further with a theme that speaks to the harmony we create together: "The Chorus - Writing Our Orchestra."
Imagine each of us as a unique note, distinct in tone yet essential to the melody we’re crafting as a collective. Individually, our stories resonate with our personal experiences and dreams; together, they create an orchestra filled with depth and diversity.
My dearest gentle reader (and yes, I hope you’re still reading in Lady Whistledown’s voice), October’s edition is all about the magic that happens when our voices unite. You’ll find stories that explore not just individual growth but the beauty of collaboration, the strength in connection, and the melody that only comes alive when we write, speak, and share together.
As you read, I hope you’re inspired to keep adding your own voice to this orchestra. Remember, no one else can bring your note to life quite like you do, and without it, the chorus would never be complete. Here’s to embracing our stories, both in solo and harmony, unapologetically and proudly. Together, we’re writing something cohesively beautiful.

With all my heart, Helen Akanimoh Editor-in-Chief, Buk'd and Bougie Book Club

Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was founded to serve one main purposeto create a community of book lovers where a similar passion for reading could be shared, and to inspire a generation of young readers.
The inspiration struck after our founder, Christie Okposin, finished reading the captivating series of Maya Angelou's autobiographies. The book had moved her deeply, but there was no one to discuss it with. She recognized there was a problem to solve so she called her friend, Helen Akanimoh, and proposed they start a book club together, knowing how much Helen loved to read. It was the perfect solution a great way to connect with others who shared their enthusiasm for literature.
Helen's acceptance to join Christie in building this vision was immediate, and Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was birthed!
Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was officially launched on November 19, 2021,
and it has since become a cherished space for lively discussions. We know this is just the beginning We are building it to become so much more.
To inspire a generation of readers and provoke a trend of thought evolving solution providers, while creating a warm and friendly environment for dreamers to become achievers.

Our mission is to bring together like minded individuals who are passionate about growth, encourage a healthy reading habit among them, and harness the power of togetherness and community.

Let me yarn thee a tale of aeons past
Of a time when the World still breathed
Magic and Wonder
Of a Mermaid of white and black happening upon a song of Sirens
Singing, "Open thy eyes! Open thy eyes!
Open thy eyes!"
Their words, so beautiful and clear
Telling her stories of time past and future dreamed
Of a World above, of legs and wings
Singing, "Open thy mind! Open thy mind!
Open thy mind!"
Their voices drew her to the beach
From beneath, did she gaze upon creatures taking to the Sun
Their legs and wings flapped grandiosely in the Sun's smile
She sang, "What wonders! What wonders! What wonders!"
Crawling into the warm sand, she did
Her body shimmering a kaleidoscopic light
Legs and wings driving her to the Sun
She sang, "I'm free! I'm free! I'm free!"
Retiring to the Sea, sought she her people
Regaling them of the Sirens and wonders above
They cried and chided her for breaking tradition,
Singing, "We shan't! We shan't! We shan't!"
Surprised at their blind resistance, she was Caught up in their black-and-white traditions, they were
She decided to swim to the beach alone
They sang, "You shan't! You shan't! You shan't!"
Listless, depressed, and betrayed, she was
The Siren's chorus a long-lost memory now
She drowned deeper and deeper into the depths
Singing, "Why live? Why live? Why live?
Out of the murky depths came a colourful visage
One became multiple colourful faces
Smelling of the Sun, of Wings, of Colour
Singing, "You are not alone! You are not alone! You are not alone!"

3 things I did well

2 concepts I still need to practice

1 question I have for my self
Yesterday, I was asked to describe life
In a single word. Something I couldn’t do without strife. And after a moment of contemplation, The word that flooded to the surface with conviction Was PERSISTENCE. Because I have never known anything as certain as the fact that Life will go on.
The rising of the sun and its setting Is a chorus that I look forward to sing.
While the trees dance under the blue sky, I move on with dreams and hopes high
On my firm shoulders or so I think. If not, my existence in this world would stink
And life will go on.
Here’s a gift for my journey: A bouquet full of my beaming smiles. For if I could fly through the sky without load,
I wouldn’t take this thorny road
Covered with dirt and dust where I stumbled and fall
But I have a long way to go and grow tall
Because life will still go on.

What inspired your love for reading ?
Well I lived with my uncle when I was young and he didn't like me playing with the kids in the neighborhood, so he'll bring books for me to read. Devotionals, newspapers, textbooks, story books, anything readable. So I guess the reading romance started from there.
How did you discover our book club?
Daniel posted about "Yinka, where is your husband?" on his WhatsApp status, I had just finished it, we talked about it, he told me that was the book of the month of his book club, I got interested and I am here
What has been your most memorable book club discussion and what made it stand out?

It has to be the day we were discussing 'His only wife' by Peace Adzo Medie. Everybody had something to say, the turn out was great, the conversation was lively, I learned a lot things, even some I wish to unlearn. I was basically a keypad warrior that day, I said less but typed a lot hahaha. Lots of people were buying the idea of arranged marriage as far as money is involved (kudos to sapa). That particular book club discussion was very memorable for me

Can you share your all-time favorite book and why it holds a special place in your heart?
I'll say, 'Purple hibiscus'. I relate to the pressure Kambili and her brother faced from their dad. He wanted nothing less of perfection and he went too extreme to achieve that. I kind of grew up that way "You're the first child, the first grandkid, you're to be of good example and hold the family together" yen yen yen yen. What about me? <sigh>. Well I've started to do things my way bit by bit tho.
How do you balance reading with other aspects of your life?
Well, I don't have much of a social life (I'm working on that). If I'm not at school, I'm at church or at home so I have a lot of free time If I have work or school activities become to hectic, I read at night or find time during the weekends. Reading is like a hobby to me alongside listening to music so if I'm not with my headset, I'm reading something.

How has being a part of Buk'd and Bougie Bookclub enriched your reading journey and personal growth?
Yes!! Part of my unwritten resolution was to go back to doing the things I loved doing and making myself useful and involved in any organization or group or club- You know something to put myself 'out there' more So when I found out about a bookclub that host book reviews and events tooahh, pure bliss :)

Growing up, I couldn’t sing (I still can’t, to be honest), but there’s nothing I enjoyed more than the harmonious nature of a good choir. How the sounds from the instruments flowed perfectly with the voices of the singers, I could almost see the music flowing as though every note was stitched together in perfect unity. There was something magical about the way individual parts, each beautiful on their own, combined to create something even greater It taught me early on that creating harmony, in music and in life, doesn’t come from one voice or one instrument it comes from all of them working together.
This is true in every aspect of life, whether we’re talking about a school, work, family or a project. The chorus, the familiar and collective rhythm of daily routines, bl ch co nd as ny th

But the key is in the writing, in how we compose and balance each part, ensuring the instruments do not overpower the voices and no voice overpowers another. Much like a conductor, we are constantly crafting our own score, directing various elements to achieve harmony. This blend of structure and spontaneity, of routine and innovation, is where true balance and creativity come alive.
When we master this, we not only enjoy the music of our own lives but also contribute to the symphony of the world around us.

In harmony, the pages turn, A symphony of stories learn.
With every line, a journey starts, Through realms of fiction, heart and arts.
Your mind, a conductor, leads the way, Through worlds of wonder, night and day.
With each new tale, a melody unfolds,
A chorus of characters, young and old.
In fantastical realms, you find your home, Where dragons soar, and heroes roam.
The rustle of leaves, a whispered spell,
Transports you to worlds beyond our own.
With every sentence, a note resounds, Echoing emotions, joy and profound.
Your heart, a violin, vibrates with cheer,
As love, loss, and triumph draw near.
In the silence, a solo voice whispers low,
Of lessons learned, and wisdom's gentle glow.
The chorus swells, a triumphant refrain, Celebrating courage, love, and life's sweet strain.
As the final page turns, the music fades,
Yet memories linger, like shimmering shades.
For in the chorus of pages, you've found,
A harmony of heart, a love profound.

An orchestra’s magic lies in each musician’s unique role, blending together to create something greater just like in football Every player, from defenders to strikers, brings their own talent to the pitch, contributing to a fluid and harmonious game. The coach is the conductor, ensuring every pass, tackle, and goal aligns, shaping the team into a symphony of movement and strategy, where success depends on rhythm, collaboration, and trust. Just as each instrument is crucial to the music, every player is essential to the team’s triumph.
Some conductors embrace chaos, allowing spontaneity and creativity, like football managers who let their teams play with freedom. Others are perfectionists, controlling every detail to ensure precision, much like tactical managers who stick to structured game plans.

Whether through chaos or control, both approaches bring out harmony, creating something powerful be it in music or on the football field.
Footballers, like instruments in an orchestra, each have their unique role. There are the skillful ones who bring flair and creativity, the disciplined players who follow the game plan with precision, and the hardworking ones who never stop running. Some shine brightest in the big moments, stepping up when it matters most, while others are the unsung team players, making everyone around them better. Then there are the super subs quiet until called upon who change the game with a single touch, leaving their mark at just the right time
A lifelong football enthusiast, he brings his passion for the game and a fresh perspective to every analysis. With a background in political science from the University of Calabar, he combines a thoughtful approach with the thrill of the sport. When he's not analyzing matches, Dennis explores the world through photography & cinematography, capturing unique moments behind the lens. He loves the financial markets, where he engages with the latest investment trends.
