Buk'd and Bougie Newsletter September Edition

Page 1

From The Editorial Desk

Dear Bougieites,

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the September edition of the Buk'd and Bougie Newsletter.

When we launched the maiden edition of our newsletter in August 2024, we didn’t really know what to expect. To be honest, we weren’t sure if it would continue, but here we are, and it just keeps getting better and better don’t you think so?

My dearest gentle reader (I hope you're reading this in Lady Whistledown’s voice), I am delighted to take you on a journey that only September could bring.

So, without further ado, I present "The Journey - Walking Through Untold Stories." This edition is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. You’ll hear stories of resilience and courage, of growth and healing Some may make you laugh, some may leave you reflective, but all of these stories are authentic, and that’s what The Journey is all about authenticity, even in the face of adversity.

As you turn through the pages of this edition, I hope it inspires you to tell your own story, the way it deserves to be told authentically and unapologetically. And as you walk through your own journey, may you be reminded that every step, no matter how small or insignificant, is a testament to your strength and growth.

Let’s embrace this journey together and remember- our stories are unique to us, and we don't have to be ashamed to tell them.

BUK’D AND BOUGIE BOOKCLUB

Our History: How it all began

Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was founded to serve one main purposeto create a community of book lovers where a similar passion for reading could be shared, and to inspire a generation of young readers.

The inspiration struck after our founder, Christie Okposin, finished reading the captivating series of Maya Angelou's autobiographies. The book had moved her deeply, but there was no one to discuss it with. She recognized there was a problem to solve so she called her friend, Helen Akanimoh, and proposed they start a book club together, knowing how much Helen loved to read. It was the perfect solution a great way to connect with others who shared their enthusiasm for literature.

Helen's acceptance to join Christie in building this vision was immediate, and Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was birthed!

Buk'd and Bougie Book Club was officially launched on November 19, 2021,

and it has since become a cherished space for lively discussions. We know this is just the beginning We are building it to become so much more.

Our Vision: Imagining our future

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Fame has a way of blinding us quite literally As I stood on that stage, flashes lighting up the room, I realized that what people see is never the full picture.

An elegant young woman in the perfect dress, no hair out of place, running a multimillion-dollar business with a pristine public image—that’s what people imagine as success. But behind it lies a different story...

The Untold Story of Fame

Fame isn’t about freedom; it’s about maintaining an image—a perfect, unblemished image where no mistakes are allowed. But who am I to talk about fame? I haven’t tasted global stardom, but I have felt the weight of expectation. As the "Golden Child" or "Model Student," I’ve experienced the corset of perfection, where one misstep feels like failure. Authenticity? It becomes a distant memory.

The Pressure to Be Perfect

At the top, the stakes are higher You can’t fail, you can’t falter. We talk about being our “true selves,” but what does that even mean? I sometimes wonder if we even have a true nature.

We become what the world needs us to be. I might think I’m loud until circumstances force me into silence I adapt; I quiet down Is that not my nature too?

Your True Story

But this story is different. This is about the side of you that never makes it into the spotlight the side that’s afraid, imperfect, and vulnerable. The cracks we hide, buried beneath layers of smiles and falsehoods, are the real story.

AM I REALLY HEALTHY?

I remember painting how my life as an adult was going to be; clean academic records, probably married at 23, an excellent career in a reputable profession . Now I'm an adult and it's entirely a different ball game. We're told to drink water, make friends, eat healthy, stay safe and love God but no one mentioned anything about taking care of one's mental health. I've always thought that mental health issues only concerned the mentally unstable individuals we see roaming the streets and eating from dumps. So if I'm physically sound but mentally exhausted and distraught, am I really healthy?!!

My darlings, life is tough and we've had experiences we do not have the courage to share. Sometimes, when we do, it feels like we are clowns, misunderstood by those who listen. But every day is a new journey, carrying its own burdens.

So, take a moment to breathe. Cry if you must it's okay not to be okay. Don’t bottle up your pain; you're not a pressure tank.

Not everyone will get the closure they're looking for. Not everyone will have the chance to tell their story, and that’s alright. But remember to put you first, darling. The world can wait.

NEARLY ALL THE MEN IN LAGOS ARE MAD

GET TO KNOW OUR BOUGIEITE OF THE MONTH

What inspired your love for reading ?

First, my mom, and second, the idea of being one of the smartest people in the room. For me, it wasn’t just about the words, but the knowledge gained from reading. Being well-versed in almost any topic being discussed always seemed so cool.

How did you discover our book club?

I discovered Buk'd and Bougie from a friend, Dennis. Thanks bro.

What has been your most memorable book club discussion and what made it stand out?

I think it was my second meeting when we discussed Maru. It stood out because the ladies' opinions were quite wild, and I actually enjoyed listening to them, lol.

BOUGIEITEOFTHE MONTH- Gamaliel Omiunu

Can you share your all-time favorite book and why it holds a special place in your heart?

It might be cliché, but Last Days at Forcados High School was something else, mehn. It was an emotional experience for me. I placed myself in each character’s shoes and felt both their joy and sadness Maybe it was because I was reading it during exam season, hahaha, but yes, Last Days at Forcados is a goated book for me. I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it there’s just something about it.

How do you balance reading with other aspects of your life?

It’s difficult, but possible. Each time I find myself scrolling aimlessly on social media, I consciously remind myself that I have a book to read. Most times, I manage to read a chapter before bed or during my free time. I also make it a point to schedule reading into my day or mentally note that, “Hey, you have a book to finish.” It takes a lot of determination and intentionality, but I get it done and so far, it’s worked for me.

How has being a part of Buk'd and Bougie Bookclub enriched your reading journey and personal growth?

I’d say discipline. I’ve developed a conscious goal of reading one book every month, and it helps strengthen my determination. Honestly, it may sound easy, but it’s not and who else can do it except me?

LIFE'S STAGES -ByJanetNoah

“Life is always about trying to find purpose, and my life has been that race.”

In 2021/2022 session, I had just started my business and was in year one, so I decided to starve myself in order to save more money for my business.

In 2023, I stopped taking my medication for schizophrenia because I hated them. I lost my phone to a bucket of dye water in the December before, and my goal was to get a new phone.

I reached out to the saving platform I used - the stories were a lot. I rushed and got the phone with my business money. I begged God, begged the people involved, but nothing changed.

One month later, I cleaned myself and started doing the hard things. I worked every night, through anxiety, panic attack, hallucinations and so on.

I haven’t gotten my 131k back, but as I read my journal tonight, I shed tears; the heartbreaks, the places I wrote to God asking Him to send someone to give me a little money or food, the days I cried tears of joy because someone gave me NGN100.

Again, every part of my life is the testament that God is good!

The Story Unfolds About The Writer

The cycle repeats, it starts again tonight

Feels like a thousand ants dwell inside

Climbing slowly, woe betide

One after the other, I'm lost to the tide

Like a spark, oh how I ignite

My voice sings high but reprieve is denied

Fight or flight, where do I even hide?

Collide, Crash, Burn... Intermission

Intermission

But mayhem is truly on a mission

Say crayfish bend, na condition

But who gave my body permission

Fight your opposition

For God's sake, this cannot be my definition It laughs, at me, it shuns Still remaining in that position

I want these wounds closed

I want respite even if borrowed Captain, can we cast this fellow?

Where do I unload?

Not on your nelly! Head on a pike but this can not be disclosed

Aye! This story must never be told.

UNTOLD STORIES 101

B Y D E S T I N Y I G I R I

I take a walk down memory lane. The cemetery calls, urging me to put pen to paper. The dead host a litany of letters, and prose tumbles out, ripened like prunes red and sweet as old wine nourishing my lethargic bones. Orpheus says that a tribe makes life more challenging, but what I find most difficult is being alone in a crowd. Let me die of joy, for I know this is how I live forever. If my story remains untold, I will die unknown. So I write driven by sleep-deprived, breathtaking hunger. I write to dispel my loneliness, to fill the plot for beauty’s sake. I write the stories of the dead, momentarily freeing myself from the body's subliminal wiring, forgetting the pull of mortality.

The cemetery whispers to me as I read out Hemingway "The sea would have loved to be an old man," it says. Like this cemetery of roses, bones, and enraptured souls, it wills me to tell and write their stories through the hollowness, because life, even in death, goes on forever. I listen to the cemetery, ages gone yet here, whispering softly, "Eurydice, what dies? Cowardice? The drunk? It's been a while, I think, since someone truly listened to me."

Veronica

Veronica had no one. The only one she had was her dad and he passed on two years ago. The only thing she now holds on to is her talent. She believes her dad gave it to her because he too had a wonderful voice.

One day as she was putting out the garbage, she found a flier lying on the ground. She looked around. Luckily for her, no one was nearby so she picked it up and looked. It was a singing competition. The prize money was too good to be true.

"With this money, I can finally leave this house even though it holds so many sweet memories," she thought.

Despite the challenges, she entered the competition. Her step mother tried her best to frustrate all her efforts, but Veronica was resilient and determined to win.

The grand finale of the competition came and she was so nervous She had so many good competitors, but she was announced as the overall winner of the five hundred grand ($500,000).

She grinned as she has never done so since her dad passed. With happy tears in her eyes, she stepped forward and collected her reward, as the crowd cheered her on.

THE OVERLAP SPORTS COLUMN

BY: DENNIS AKANIMOH

The Title Charge- "Who invited Liverpool to the party?"

For the second week running, Manchester City dropped points from a winning position, this time stuttering to a draw with Newcastle after Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot in the second half Much has been made of the absence of key midfielder Rodri, who will miss the whole season with an ACL injury suffered in the draw against Arsenal last week, and City were way off their best without him here.

Liverpool went top of the Premier League on Saturday night with a win at Wolves as Arne Slot’s side took advantage of Manchester City’s slip-up at Newcastle earlier in the day. City’s draw opened the door first to Arsenal, who could not beat Leicester by the three clear goals they needed to, and then Liverpool to take pole position, and Slot’s side came up with the win they required Still early days
