Bok Yearbook 2025

Page 1

This year marks a meaningful milestone: ten years since this historic former vocational high school reopened its doors and began its second life. Over the past decade, we’ve watched this 340,000-square-foot building, spanning an entire city block, transform into a thriving home for more than 200 businesses. From glassblowers to preschools, tattoo artists to designers and makers, Bok is now a daily workplace for over 700 people and a destination that welcomes more than 140,000 visitors each year.

In 2025, we paused to reflect on just how much Bok, and the community that animates it, has grown. We continued to bring neighbors, artists, and makers together through beloved events like Open Studios and the B[L]OK Party, opening the building wide to showcase the remarkable work happening within its walls.

This year also brought new voices and energy. We were thrilled to welcome Lightbox Film Center, which introduced its program of independent cinema to the auditorium, and Global Craft Market, whose presence at the WKSHP creates a vibrant marketplace for immigrant artisans and small business owners. We were especially honored that our former intern, Prince Leon, chose Bok as the place to establish their art practice and studio, creating truly special work and deepening the creative fabric of this community.

Throughout it all, we’ve remained deeply committed to supporting the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship. We encourage our community to adapt, expand, and enter new spaces as their businesses grow, always with an eye toward sustainability, resilience, and long-term impact.

A decade in, Bok has taught us that true community strengthens with time. And as Philadelphia continues to change, the need for places that support creative work, shared opportunity, and collective imagination remains as vital as ever.

One old school, millions of possibilities— how we built the community you see today.

Engage spaces immediately

Activate spaces early with installations, pilot programs, or pop-ups.

Build from the outside-in

Let people see your progress early and often visibility creates momentum.

Celebrate easy wins

Take advantage of what’s already working.

Invite the public in

Talk to your neighbors— it’s important to create deeper connections with your community and build trust early on.

Create the tenant you want

Get scrappy to create the business or activity you want to see, even if it’s temporary.

The value of a “big binder”

Do your research, stay organized, and keep all the essential details in one place.

Consider adjacencies

What tenants and uses work well together? Always consider sounds and smells when Tetris-ing tenants together.

Community is everything

Bok is about people first. The strongest projects are built with and for the community.

It’s always a work in progress

Embrace that no project is ever “done,” and changing circumstances mean you have to react creatively.

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time! Work to complete viability for a small piece of the puzzle, and bring the project to life incrementally and strategically.

“What’s great about Bok is that they truly want to help people succeed. After being an exclusively online shop for a few years, I wanted to try out a physical space to see if it would work for my business or not, but I couldn’t financially take a risk of signing a multiyear lease and building out a space. Being able to talk to someone at Bok about my specific needs and goals, then finding the right space that could accommodate that, was something I never thought could happen. I wouldn’t have a storefront if not for Bok.”

“The Bok community is easily one of my favorite things about living in Philly. As a freelancer that runs my own business, by myself, being in the building helps me feel less alone. Coming in to work on a weekend to get those extra drawings in, and the building is buzzing with events, and fellow weekend warriors, helps me keep pushing.”

“Bok has become my second home. It feels like a small town. When I step outside of my studio door I always run into a friend and that always makes my day! I feel safe, supported, seen, and inspired here. I’m so glad to have Bok in my life.”

“I am grateful for these ten years at Bok. Solo studio life can be isolating and working alongside my studio mates within the Bok community refuels me daily.”

“We chose Bok during the pandemic. We were looking for a space and we heard a lot of ‘no’s’ along the way. Bok was the place that said ‘yes.’ That yes became the starting point for Second Daughter and it changed everything for us.”

key accomplishments

Our work on Bok is never done, and we’re proud of the projects tackled and milestones reached this year.

1 Ten Years of Bok

This year, Bok celebrated its ten year milestone, marking a decade of growing creativity and community. What began as a scrappy experiment has grown into a nationally recognized model for creative, community driven space, shaped by a team that continues to adapt and problem solve.

To mark the milestone, we hosted a sparkling anniversary party with a performance and sing along by John Jarboe of The Bearded Ladies Cabaret and a custom cake from Party Girl Bakes. For ten years, Bok has given makers, artists, dreamers, and neighbors a place to test ideas, take risks, and be themselves.

2 Grant for Friends of Bok

Friends of Bok announced an unexpected 800,000 dollar grant to support renovations of the historic Bok Auditorium, with support from State Senator Nikil Saval and State Representative Elizabeth Fiedler.

The funding enabled long awaited upgrades including a full HVAC system, improved seating, and preservation of original plaster details, strengthening the auditorium’s role as a community cultural space.

3

Elevator Glow-Ups

Our elevators have lived full, hardworking lives, so it’s no surprise they all needed a little glow-up. We started the year rebuilding the West elevator and are ending it by tackling the East — bringing all three closer to fully new mechanical systems so they can reliably carry everyone where they’re going. (East coming soon!)

It’s been a long road of nuts, bolts, and patience, but the progress is real, and we’re excited to see these essential workhorses back in their best form.

4

30-Minute Parking on Dudley Street

Parking in South Philly is no small feat, and we have long looked for ways to make quick visits to Bok a little easier, whether you are running in for a tasty treat or grabbing a much needed caffeinated beverage. This year, we officially implemented 30 minute parking on Dudley Street. We hope it makes those short stops a bit easier for our community.

recognitions + awards

We’re thrilled to see the amazing work of our community and partners getting the recognition it deserves, and we’re always grateful for opportunities to share this work. Here are some of the accolades they earned this year!

City Council Resolution BOK

This year, Bok was honored at City Hall with a privileged resolution from the Philadelphia City Council recognizing and celebrating the 10th anniversary of the building’s revitalization into a thriving hub for artists, makers, and small businesses. It was a meaningful moment for our team and a testament to the community that has grown within these walls over the past decade.

We’re grateful to Councilmember Rue Landau for the recognition, to our South Philadelphia neighbors for their support, and to every tenant who has brought their work, talent, and energy to Bok. As Lindsey Scannapieco noted during the ceremony, “Whether you’re a chef, an entrepreneur, a small business, a maker — we need spaces like this in the city.”

We believe deeply in creating spaces where creatives can work, experiment, and grow — and this honor affirms just how impactful that mission has been within the City of Philadelphia.

“Scout has gained a reputation for infusing life and culture back into city spaces that are forgotten or abandoned. The Bok Building, for example, was a former school in South Philly that closed due to declining enrollment and budget cuts. Now, it’s a creative force to be reckoned with — home to dozens of Philadelphia businesses, nonprofits, makers and artists. The rooftop is a popular bar with skyline views and couples hold wedding receptions in the former gymnasium.

The UArts buildings are a bit different. While currently vacant, they are far from forgotten. Instead, they are beloved and historical treasures in the heart of Philly.”

The female-led design firm behind the Bok’s makeover has plans to redevelop two iconic UArts buildings.

new faces + spaces

Over the course of 2025 we celebrated Bok’s 10 year anniversary and those who were with us from the very beginning. We toasted milestone anniversaries for Lobo Mau, the sustainability focused fashion brand, and jewelry designer and maker Marie Eife, both early tenants whose collaborative spirit continues to shape Bok’s creative culture and set the tone for the building today.

The building continues to flourish because of the community within it. This year we welcomed 18 new faces to the building, bringing new energy, ideas, and perspectives. We are proud to see Bok continue growing as a place where people can explore, make, play, and create meaningful impact. It is especially exciting when community collaborators find their own space. Originally a frequent user of the Bok Auditorium, Lightbox Film Center established their home at Bok this year, strengthening their programming of experimental and international cinema. An extension of Mural Arts’ community work, the People’s Budget Office

also joined the building, creating space to educate and engage Philadelphians around the city budget and civic participation.

After participating in a program with Bok based nonprofit The Welcoming Center and years of vending in the building and local markets, Global Craft Market opened their first storefront in the WKSHP corridor. Artists like Prince De Leon also joined the community, continuing to explore identity, memory, and material through their practice and contributing to the creative fabric of the building.

As we close out this defining year, we are grateful to everyone who filled it with energy and purpose, from those who come to Bok every day to make something, to those who show up in service of others, and to everyone who helps shape what Bok continues to become.

Cheers to more at Bok!

community collaborations

Collaboration is key to Bok, and our community members are always finding ways to work together. Teamwork makes the dream work!

1 People’s Budget x Lily Xie

The People’s Budget Office collaborated with artist Lily Xie to explore how public budgets intersect with everyday life through creative, community centered work. As an artist in residence, Lily Xie brought her practice in illustration, animation, and participatory design into the space, helping translate complex budget concepts into accessible and engaging visual experiences. Together, the collaboration invited Philadelphians to imagine alternative futures for public spending, using art as a tool for civic dialogue, reflection, and collective participation.

2 Tailored Collective x Holly Simple

Studio neighbors The Tailored Collective and Holly Simple partnered on a custom wedding suit for a Bok tenant, blending tailored craftsmanship with hand illustrated charm work. Together, they created a deeply personal piece that wove the client’s story into every detail, from the custom fit to the removable charms later transformed into a keepsake necklace. The collaboration reflects Bok’s culture of creative connection, where artists work side by side to mark meaningful moments.

3

Pet Riso x Kelechi Azu

Pet Riso Studio and Kelechi Azu teamed up on a playful collaboration that celebrates shared curiosity and creative exchange within the Bok community. Blending Pet Riso’s love of risograph printing with Kelechi Azu’s expressive, colorful imagery, the project grew naturally from being studio neighbors. It is a sweet example of how working side by side at Bok sparks collaboration, experimentation, and a little creative magic.

4 Room Shop x Sabbatical Beauty

It is no surprise that two small batch, women owned businesses on the third floor found a beautiful way to pair their products. Room Shop keeps delighting us with their dreamy accessories, while Sabbatical Beauty continues to impress with skincare that truly works. This year, Room Shop created the Dumpling Bag Charm to perfectly hold Sabbatical Beauty’s Lip and Cheek Tint Pot, a weightless and buildable tint made with just five nourishing ingredients.

We continue to anchor our events and programming with our flagship internal offerings —Open Studios, B[L]OK Party, and Alumni Day—which bring our community together and welcome visitors from near and far. Building on the momentum of 10 years of Bok, our event spaces are now activated nearly every day with gatherings, community meetings, athletics, performances, workshops, galas, and weddings—and, of course, this year’s 10year anniversary birthday celebration!

bok open studios

Our priority is to grow Open Studios by welcoming more members of the building community and reaching a wider audience. This year, we focused on enhancing visitor flow and creating a more accessible experience for all ages. These efforts paid off, as we saw a record number of visitors at our Fall Open Studios.

Our annual Summer Kick-Off celebrates our South Philly roots on the Mifflin block. Friends, families, and neighbors came together for a day of crafts, food, shopping, and lively entertainment, celebrating our favorite block. The event was a hit, earning glowing feedback from both neighbors and tenants and showcasing the heart of our community.

Irwin’s had another great year slinging bowls of pasta and plates of whole fish. We hosted joyful private events like industry tastings, team gatherings and weddings.

This year brought us long tables and small counters, late nights and shared plates. We began crafting aperitivo favorites for Frankie’s Summer Club at the Village of Industry, and celebrated Salvatore’s Counter surpassing its 1,000th dish. We rang in the new year with caviar and fireworks, danced at Making Time and Italo Discos on the 8th floor, and gathered our hospitality community for the second annual Mr. Budd’s Cookout, honoring Chef Michael Ferreri’s late uncle, Wayne. Through it all, we showed up for one another, fundraising and hosting food drives in the face of hunger in our community.

We feel lucky to be part of the Bok community, and grateful for every guest that comes to dine with us on the 8th floor. We look forward to another year of feeding you.

In Memory of Joe Marino

April 20, 1963 - June 11, 2025

A loyal neighbor, storyteller, singer, traveler, and tireless champion of our neighborhood, Joe bridged generations, celebrated our local communities, and kept the South Philly spirit alive with passion, humor, and heart. His legacy endures in the people and places he loved — including Bok, which he actively supported since the beginning. We’re raising a diet root beer in his honor.
