97th Wholesaler annual
I\ESPITE relatively good business Uconditions lately, many of those attending the North American Wholesale Lumber Association convention expressed concern about the increasingly serious timber supply shortages caused by environmentalists' actions.
Speaker Daniel Goldy, an industry expert on the environmentalist problem, called the "outlook forboding, the prospects dire" in describing the current situation. He accused the environmentalists of seeking a total ban on logging in the United States, adding that their concern over so-called endangered species in the forests was nothing but "a hoax" to achieve their aims.
Goldy called for the industry at all levels to rally behind the newlyformed American Forest Resources Alliance.
Attendance at the 97th annual was 675, some 50 below last year, which was one of the highest on record. The convention was held April l6-19 at the Sheraton El Conquistador Resort, Tucson, Az.

Hardwood Wholesalers Approve Rule Changes
Several changes proposed for the 1986 National Wholesale Hardwood Lumber Association grade rules were approved by the Pacific Coast Wholesale Hardwood Distributors Association at its 66th annual convention. Considering changes developed by Frank Paxton, the group sent others back for further study.

In other business at the Los Cabos, Baja Mexico, gathering, president Bruce Frost gave a state of the hardwood industry report from a distributor's view. Section reports by region on the economy ranged from "bad business conditions" to "moderately better than the same time last year." Government regulations, and environmental problems also received attention.
Tony Moxon, MMK Holdings, gave an update on Australian and New Zealand hardwood activities.
During the annual awards banquet, the group saluted two past presidents who died in 1988, William Fahs and Werner Richen.

Sales Fitness Seminar
The first in a series of sales fitness seminars was held in Newport Beach, Ca., by John Bates, president of The Westmark Group.
The two day seminars combine business management sessions with physical fitness meetings that include health concepts including nutrition and exercise. "The idea is that the two concepts go together," according to Bates. "You can't be really effective in business unless you are physically fit."
Appearing at the meetings were Greg Barton, a double gold medal winner in the 1988 Olympics, and HeidiMiller, founder of the national chain of Heidi's Frogen Yozurt Shoppes.
Additional seminars are scheduled for Sept.28/29, Oct. 19/20 and Nov. 16/17. The Westmark GrouP is located in Dana Point. Ca.
Internal Theft Erodes Profit
Employee theft takes a big chunk of profit from many businesses.
An estimated $40 billion annually reports the U.S. Commerce Department while the American Management Association estimates employee theft is responsible for as many as 200/o of the business failures.
Some studies indicate that approximately 30-40V0 of all employees admit to some form of theft.
