Spenard Expands In Alaska
After three years of consolidating by closing stores, Spenard Builders Supply, Anchorage, Ak., is finally expanding one of its nine locations.
The 4,500 sq. ft. Wasilla, Ak., unit is gaining an additional 3,100 sq. ft. of floor space to accommodate a kitchen center, floor covering center, window and door displays, and expanded paint, hardwood and hardware departments.
This is Spenard's first expansion since it added its Sitka. Ak.. unit in 1986. Since then. a severe economic recession has pounded the state's construction industry and forced the chain to close several stores.
The expansion was caused by the need to upgrade an undersized, 12year-old store and a perceived change in customer confidence. "A lot of people have seen their houses lose so much equity, they can't get rid of them," says operations manager Mike Buza. "So if they're going to live in them, they're going to add rooms and change carpets or appliances."

Glulams Build Reputatftrns
Dealers can establish a reputation for dependability by assuring builders a consistent source of supply with a consistent inventory of quality building components at a consistent price.
Glulam beams fit into this category by being consistently available, as well as strong and stable in construction. Because it is an engineered product and not a commodity, a glulam's price is stable.
Glulam performance depends on the use of machine stress rated (MSR) lumber. Each piece of lumber in a glulam is machine tested to determine the amount of weight it can hold. It is then placed in the beam so that the resulting glulam is consistently strong and reliable.
The use of kiln dried lumber and exterior waterproof glue means that glulams will not shrink like green timbers. Glulams do not check, warp or twist, but remain dimensionally stable when exposed to normal construction conditions.
In discussing the benefits of glulams for dealers, Karen Mahoney, marketing communications manager at Weyerhaeuser Co., a large producer of glulam beams, stressed that glulams, because they are manufactured, do not depend on the variable width and length of today's timbers. "Glulams are produced in depths of 6 to 24 inches, in lt/z inch increments," she explained, "and in a wide range of widths."

Glulams can be produced in lengths up to 60 feet and delivered to retailers in specified lengths. Waste is never a problem because every
